Toe-tally Fast

Don't get offended, that's not me giving you the finger. That's me showing off my finger-like second toe (Also called the "Morton's Toe" or the "Princess Toe"). I have always viewed these long toes of mine as an embarrassment, a curse even. That is until now. There was a short article in The Week magazine that says this:

Long toes, faster running

It's often said that great sprinters are born, not made. Now there's more biological evidence that this is true. Scientists have long known sprinters tend to have a higher percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers in their legs. Now it turns out that sprinters possess another physical edge: longer toes. When researchers measured the feet and ankles of a group of university runners, the sprinters were found to have toes at least a third of an inch longer than non-sprinters. That likely converts into a more effective push-off and more ground contact while getting up to speed.
I feel so silly. All of these years I had no idea I was a sprinter at heart. Up until now these long second toes of mine have only been good for holding chopsticks, picking up items on the floor when I was too lazy to bend down and scratching the dog behind his ears.

Turns out the second toe is really very famous. Remember that Seinfeld episode where they refer to the second big toe as the coup de toe? George said, “Yeah! like the big toe is like the captain of the toes, but sometimes the toe next to the big toe gets so big that there’s like a power struggle and the second toe assumes control of the foot.”

Today's run? I'm up to 25 minutes, oh yeah!! She's coming back. It was 25 degrees and totally snow packed, but exceptionally beautiful and sunny. Total was 3.42 miles with some walking thrown in. Here's the sunset last night as seen from my deck. It sucks to see this every night.

And last night? Got our tree. Husband lost his wedding ring he's had for 15 years in the process (sob). Had chocolate fondue. Great night minus the wedding ring.

  6. CO is my favorite place on earth. My husband was in Boulder last week for work and I will be in Steamboat the week before Christmas for skiing. I have a conference in Feb in Denver and will be spending 4 extra days up at Vail skiing with a friend. Love Love Love CO.

  7. I guess I'm a sprinter at heart also :/. I have no toenails on the second toes and must resort to just painting the stubs in the summer - I must be girly no matter what!

Nice Christmas tree...sorry about the wedding ring :(.

  8. Awesome...I can blame my lack of serious speed on my toes. Cool

  10. Losing the ring sucks. I have worn mine on a necklace around my neck for years because I don't take it off when I run. Just had one too many runs where it went flying off - luckily I found it every time.

  11. Har! coup de toe - I got that too!

Freaks my kids out when I pick up their clothes on the floor with my feet because of these long toes. I'm still waiting for my monkey toes to make me faster too.

  12. that explains why I struggle with trying to build up my speed...my shorty toes! Wouldn't ya know it. I can go a long way, but not very fast...working on that. Need new toes.
We have a similar view...the best.
    Bummer about the ring.

  14. If that's true, then you should be the fastest sprinter that ever lived. That's one long toe.
Up to 25 minutes? That's awesome. Feels good to finally run doesn't it?? May will be here before we know it.
