Boo Boo

It was a tough day on the bike.

P1090941

I fell and I cried. I don’t know how it happened. I was trying to start from a stop and toppled. Then Ken sort of fell on me. I was stuck under my bike, still clipped in on one side. My chain fell off. At that point I was more embarrassed for the scene I had made at this intersection full of cyclists and cars than worried about the scrape.

Once I was up I realized how bad my knee hurt and I still had to ride home ten miles. That’s when the wind kicked up and my shoulder started to hurt (the guy who did my bike fit yesterday needs a kick in the crotch).

I love to be out riding, but today was not one of those days. 31 miles. I came home and quickly went to the donut store where I got a cinnamon roll the size of my head and large coffee with extra cream. Immediately I felt better. Fulfilled. No more pain or sadness. This is what’s left:

I am loving my hair here. Don’t be jealous. Just put your hair in helmet for a couple hours and sweat, then take it off and you too can have this style:

I am mentally preparing for getting into the shower and how I will scream like the little girl that I am when the soap hits my boo boo. I may be 44, but I can still cry, wince in pain and ask for sympathy. I know we have a Mickey Mouse band aid around here somewhere.

Feel free to send sympathy cards and more donuts.

Triathletes have feelings too.

  1. Damn you really do that cycling chick thing well! Seriously, I think one of the reasons I want to get over my fear of the bike (falling, crashing, being hit) is so that I can wear that bad ass cycling gear. Hope that boo boo heals and doesn't hurt so bad in the shower. Excited to see you training for this thing. Who knows, you might really fall in love with this whole tri thing and have to change your blog name...shut up and "Try"/ tri or shut up and shower...

  2. Now you know that you are HARD CORE!!!

  3. Ah! Now you look so tough. Where did you find donuts in this town?! Which tri are you training for?

  4. ...another post that inspires me to just be a runner! I think you need two band aids, Mickey and Minnie.

  5. You know your a Triathlete when - You have a cool (bike fall) battle wound to show off. Now have fun coming up with an entertaining story to fit the wound - we all know you will have the best story!

  6. Ouch! That made me wince just looking at it.

  8. Love the hair!! Sorry about the boo boo ;-(

  9. Ouch! Good thing you self-medicated with that giant cinnamon roll! Falling off a bike scares me which is probably why I don't ride one. But I've been thinking about starting.

  10. oh I have been there. I feel at a stop light right in front of the whole fire department who were outside. A bunch of men laughing at me. Ya I would have laughed too actually. Donuts and wine make everything better.
    :)

  11. Been there, done that. Now feeling your pain. I believe that was about the time I was cussing something fierce about clips. Needless to say, my tri days were limited. Loved the running, LIKED the ocean swim, but still hated the clips on the bike. More props to you, though. Look at the bright side - you can compare scars with others - always a plus.

  15. I just did 32 miles today too. Sometimes I llike a break from the long run and I am inbetween training programs for another week, so off we went. It was northern IL southern Wisconsin HILLS. My quads were in disbelief at this new agony. My husband took too long at the rest stop. I warned and nagged that we cannot rest too long. Did he listen? Nope. Did the legs start cursing? Yep. Thankfully we had no incidents that brought injuries.I could not imagine running after that ride though. You rock!

  16. I just fell a couple weeks ago and scraped my knees up pretty bad (I fell running). They hurt way worse than they looked and I promised to never roll my eyes at the kids again when they whine about a scraped knee. Hope yours heals fast.

  17. Cinnamon roll the size of your head = like.
    Boo-boos = dislike.

  18. Oh dang that looks like it hurt! But on an up note, your calf muscles rock!

  19. I did the same thing last year and my husband just stood there and laughed at me!! Hope your shower does not hurt too much :)

  20. Ouch! That looks horrible! I hope you get to feeling better.

  21. coffee makes everything better :)

  22. Aww so sad! Sorry you fell! You are not alone i've done some pretty embarrrasing things on my bike too. Lol
    feel better!

  23. I am lucky, I don't need to go through all that hassle to achieve the exact same hair look :)

But I DO want that cinnamon roll. Actually I would have chosen an apple fritter…more dense with more grease :)

You could tape a piece of saran wrap over that boo boo to protect it from the shower pain…but I suppose it's too late for that piece of advice.

    Hope it heals quickly!

  24. Ouch! Maybe you'll get lucky and have a couple bad ass scars from it!

  25. Ouch! This is exactly why I am afraid of the bike. Well that and the irrational fear that someone is going to plow me off the road. You know, because you are SO much safer when you are running!

Donuts are good - but wine is better. Helps you forget the pain.

    Hope heal quickly!

  26. Sucks. But holy crapmole, you have sweet legs!

  27. OUCH! But that reward..Ahhhh!!!!!!!!

  28. All I have in Tinker Bell band-aids, wil that work? That is the one thing I HATE about bike shoes, the first time I tried I fell over and STILL have the scar going down my leg, but that happened a few years ago and now I keep my clips loose enough I can get out them them a little easier!
Hope you knee feels better and cry all you want, the more sympathy, the better!!!!! :D

  29. Yikes! That looks awful! I'm impressed you got back on the bike!

  30. OUch!! When i first got a bike as an adult (2 years ago) it was to train for my first tri. I hopped on and crashed within 50 ft. Scraped the crap out of my knee as well. I also crashed on the next ride, but i was wearing elbow and knee pads. And i crashed when a bee stung my face. It all hurt; especially my ego.

  31. ouch. i just picked up my callus/blister that was on my foot and i am highly concerned about the damage i have done to myself. should be fun when i get out an run. tomorrow i swim 1.2 in the river......and i am scared......

  32. My son has an identical booboo on his knee. I told him to show it to the cutie he has a crush on at school because chicks dig adventuresome dudes with booboos. He said "yeah, but it sure does hurt" :) Bottomline: booboos are proof we don't lead sedentary boring lives. Wear it like a badge of honor, sister.

  33. Ouch!!! I am so sorry, girl! *THAT* is why I don't do triathlons. Ok, I did one... but that was ENOUGH! I can't tell you how many times I fell from my damn bike still clipped into the pedals. I felt/looked like an idiot. Forget it!

Hope the shower was ok. Stay tough!

  34. Way to break your cherry. Falling means you are now a triathlete as well.

I have fallen standing still so at least you were trying to move.

Way to make up for it by having that donut though....

    ReplyDelete
  35. BTW I forgot to add that the scraps on my knees are from shaving....top that as a triathlete story.

  36. That looks like it hurts! Ouch! But, huge donuts and coffee always make things better!

  37. Although I am sure you have already showered - but in the future you could stick some vasoline on your sore - that way the water and soap won't hurt!

    I feel your pain!

  38. My friend hurt her back yesterday. I think I'll tell her that the only way to pain relief is a cinnamon roll as big as her head and a coffee with extra cream. I'm sure she'd be happy with that prescription.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ouchie! You definitely earned the cinnamon roll. I hope the shower wasn't too painful!

    ReplyDelete
  40. ::cringes:: I am so sorry, girl! Bleh.

  41. Does it make you feel better if I said I fell down some stairs yesterday and have seriously bruised my left butt cheek?? I felt horribly embarassed and am now only sitting on half my butt to reduce the pain. At least you can show people your injury and get some sympathy - if I whip mine out, I'd scare people!

Go get a bandaid and some polysporin, and get better!

  42. It always happens in the most populated area. Couldn't have happened in your driveway on the way out.

  43. eek! That looks like it hurts!!! Hope the shower wasn't too painful!

  44. Congratulations! You've been initiated. You are now a true cyclist/triathlete. Wait till the day you go to put your right foot down, only to realize you uncliped your left foot. :-)

  45. Giant cinnamon rolls is what I recommend to my patients with huge owies all the time ;). Seriously- that looks painful! Are you trying to convince me not to take up cycling?

  46. I do LOVE the hair.. I will try that "do" Looks sexy!

  47. That hurt, hope your feeling better.

  48. I took out both my knees during the T1 transition in the only triathlon ( a super sprint) that I have contested. I fell as I was hopping on my bike.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yowsa, that looks it it hurt a little. I'm with you, though - I'd totally be more about the embarrassment at causing a scene than a couple of abrasions.

    SUAB - new sticker ???
Hope your boo-boo's heal quickly !
