Mizuno Wave Rider 19 Review and Giveaway

I’m really picky about my running shoes, as we all should be. As you know I've had many running related injuries.  This has led to many hours spent pool running (ugh...awful) and bruises under my arms from crutches. Don’t even get me started on the PT co-pays and self-pity parties (attended by me and wine). I do not want to return to that dark place.

I don’t think shoes are a cure all, but I do think they factor in. The shoe itself doesn’t make you a better runner, but it can encourage a certain foot strike or can remedy things like over-pronation - all important injury prevention aspects. And, there is always the placebo affect. In certain shoes you feel faster and like you have better form and voila – sometimes your thoughts make it so.

So…I’ve got my favorite shoes that fit me like the perfect glass slipper. And, I stick to them like flies on shit. I used to run in Mizunos, but haven’t for a few years, mostly because I went to a lower drop heel to toe shoe.

But, I was interested when Mizuno asked me to review their new Wave Rider 19s.  People love the Wave Riders like they were magic, so I had to try them.

Truth be told, I wasn’t sure I would love the shoe. As I’ve been in a more minimalist shoe lately, I thought the Wave Rider 19s, might be just too much of a shoe for me.

IMG_5297

Wrong. Seriously. It was kind of love at first sight and love at first run with these babies.

IMG_5235

The fit, the comfort, the look all cliqued with me. I like a shoe I do not have to think about when I run. It just feels right, so I forget about it. No rubbing in the wrong places, no toes hitting the front of the shoe, etc. I like a shoe that is somewhat sturdy so it holds up on dirt roads and does not wear out too quickly. These babies met my criteria.

  27. These are by far my favorite running shoe ever. I've been wearing them since my freshman year of cross country. I've literally bought 3 pairs of the wave rider 17's from running warehouse, because they're on sale, and wave riders are by far my favorite show ever. Would love to try the newest version! šŸ˜œ

    ReplyDelete
  28. My current pair just aren't feeling right for me anymore. Time to try something new.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I switched to these after I could not run for 8 months due to plantar fascitis. The worst thing ever, although I did teach myself to swim in the interim, despite the looks of pity from the guy in the next lane (he watched me flounder down the lane and said,"oh, you poor thing. I've taught many women your age how to swim." Anyway these shoes were lifesavers and I need a new pair but have been top cheap to buy them. Would love to win something for once in my life.

  30. I'm actually coming back from an injury (broken ankle) that I sustained on my first 50k trail race. Before that, I alternated between wave riders and Brooks ghost (love them both). I had still been using the wave rider 16s I think (lol, I stockpiled) so trying the newest shoe would be so cool when I am cleared to run again, hopefully in the next week or two.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It sounds like we have similar stories. I wore Mizuno's when I first took up running again 12 years ago. I am currently side lined from running and training for the 2016 Houston marathon with the second stress reaction in a year. I agree shoes aren't the cure all but I also agree that they play a part.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  37. I need a shoe to forget about! My kinvara 6's aren't the same as my old kinvara 1's, so I'm a little on the hunt for my new go-to shoe.

  99. I have Altras now, and I love the toe room and zero drop, but the type I have too thin for gravel, which is what I run on 90% of the time. I would like to try something similar, but more substantial to hold up to gravel/trails.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I have been running in the same shoe for several years now. They have been good, but I too am starting to get some little nagging "things" going on. I've never tried Mizunos!

  169. I started running when I was 51. I am now 52. I was a bonafide, committed, pledge allegiance to the sofa couch potato. A year later I am more excited about running than ever. First goals were to make it one mile, then two, then a 5k. Now I am aiming for a 10k. Not killer distances, I know. They are a challenge for me in part because I had an acl, meniscus and stress fracture injury 3 years ago after trying to jump over my beagle (fail, obviously). Don't ask. Anyhow, I promised that after one year I'd splurge on good shoes.

  171. I have been loyal to a different brand, but the tongue on the last pair I bought is driving me crazy. I think I'm ready to look at another shoe...

  172. I have never tried them but I need to have a different shoe than my beloved Hokas to switch things up now and then.

  173. I think I would love these shoes, I have worn many previous Wave Rider versions! I love the color, too :)

  175. I've also been a minimalist shoe runner for a while now, but looking to try out some new shoes. I've developed some foot pains after my last marathon and would LOVE to try out the Wave Riders. I've heard a lot of great things about them.

  176. I too am trying to run injury free. I'm interested in learning how other shoes impact my performance and running health.

  177. I've been running in Wave Rider's for a while now. Running in the 18s now and love them. Would love to get my hands on a pair of 19s. They are beautiful!

  178. I hope those are BETTER than 18. I loved 17 but 18 are not as good TO HARD. I would love a Pair of 19s to have a go in them

  179. I've always wanted to try mizunos. I run in Newtons though so I'm always afraid to try new shoes. I'm glad you liked the changes and they were good for your foot!

  183. After years of running I am randomly having IT band problems, and I wonder if it's because my favorite shoe has shaken it up a bit. I'd love to try a few other pairs to see if there's a better fit for me.

  184. It's the only shoe I run in, and have been for the past 9+ years. Love Wave Riders...and I NEED the 19s :)
