What Gets You Noticed?

Here is an anonymous comment in response to my last post:

“Well behaved women never make history. So if you're a well behaved woman, that's okay but you gotta be a badass every once in awhile to get noticed.”

Do you agree?

My favorite source of information, the Urban Dictionary, defines a badass as: 1. adjective. having extremely favorable qualities 2. adjective. pertaining to a person or thing that is rugged, strong, and/or ready to show these qualities.

Seems it’s a matter of being a  badass and of finding a way to be memorable. What makes someone memorable in a badassness kind of way?

  • Kindness (Mother Theresa)
  • Controversy (Susan B. Anthony)
  • Courage (Harriett Tubman)
  • Intelligence (Margaret Thatcher)
  • Progressiveness (Eleanor Roosevelt)
  • Authenticity (Oprah)
  • Sarcasm/potty mouthness/irreverence (Shut Up and Run)

Countless other women and corresponding adjectives are left off the list, but you get the idea.

I see the common denominator as being that these women were risk takers. They were willing to to step outside of their comfort zones.  They did great things and were noticed for them because they deserved it. In my book that’s a pretty favorable quality.

Do you have to be a badass to be noticed?

  1. Nope! Ex. You can be beautiful yet shallow and you will still be noticed!

  2. I don't think you have to be a badass to get noticed either. It doesn't hurt to be a badass, but I don't think it's necessary.

  9. Teaching our kids to be risk-takers is one of the most important things we do as parents. Of course, we teach them to make choices, good choices, first. This helps them to believe and trust themselves and, then, they are ready to take risks.

  10. Getting noticed...... I really hate to admit this but usually being a Dumb Ass gets me noticed. Isn't that horrible? I don't try to do that but ocassionally I am told these are the reasons I might be noticed. WHOOPS!

  11. I agree with some of the others--unfortunately today, too many women are noticed for all the wrong reasons--Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc. One thing I love about the athletic community is that it can appreciate people for other reasons. So yahoo for bad asses!

  12. Badass is fine but sometimes it's the total opposite that gets someone noticed. Being noticed for any good quality is great.

  13. Being badass takes confidence. I believe confidence is what it takes for anyone to get noticed.
That or being a frickin' loon!

  14. I guess it depends in which way you want to be noticed! Badass probably helps if you want to be "cool" noticed.

  15. I'm all for being badass if that's your thing, but you absolutely do NOT have to be badass to get noticed. Need examples? Mother Teresa, Princess Di, and...well, I was going to say Rosa Parks, but then again, she was pretty badass for her day :)

  17. I think that once you become a runner or a mom "badass" takes on a whole new meaning! Here's what I do most days:

-get 2 boys up, fed, dressed (husband too)
    -work 8 hours
    -workout/train (run/bike)
    -fix dinner
    -play
    -have fun
    -put everyone in bed
    -relax

    Pretty Badass huh? :)

  18. I don't think you need to be a badass, I just think you need to be brave and ready/able to speak up when required.
