My qualifying time of 3:42 has been verified and my name has been added to the formal entry list! (Just cause you registered doesn’t mean you’re in. You’re not in ‘til you’re IN).
As I sit here not being able to walk it is hard to imagine running this race in 176 days.
This entry verification is what I need to stay focused and optimistic. To get to the bottom of this injury and to heal into a faster, stronger and smarter runner.
Timeline
- Tonight: Drink beer and eat wings (it is Saturday night after all).
- Next 2-3 weeks: Crutches. No weight on left leg at all. Possible swimming with a buoy. Oprah. Drive thrus. Ass growth. Unsolicited bouts of crying.
- Mid November: Introduce water running, swimming, walking, maybe cycling.
- January 1st: Walk/running.
- January 15: Start marathon training. By far my shortest training cycle (12 weeks), but it’s what I can do.
This is my wish list timeline. I could have setbacks. I could not heal swiftly. My doc seems to think I can run Boston and I’m going with that until further notice. I need to believe.
It’s kind of like a birth plan when you have a baby. You hope to high hell you don’t crap the delivery table or spew profanities at your husband or forget to breathe or wait too long to get the epidural or take drugs at all if you don’t want to. But on the day itself you have to be willing to surrender to reality for the health of you child, whatever that is. Best advice my doc ever gave me was to have a plan, but realize it might not go just so. Because much to my chagrin I did crap and I did spew and I did do drugs.

ReplyDeleteLike the timeline. If your smart it is TOTALLY realistic. I think you could walk even before January 1st and be light running by then but only if you take it easy now. Also, Ass growth and unsolicited bouts of crying...LOL! You can afford a little ass growth-me on the other hand...This junk in the trunk is slowing me down!! Congrats on seeing your name on the entry list! Every tear, every tantrum will be worth running the Boston marathon-I GUARANTEE it! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAwesome timeline! And congrats on getting in on the Boston boat for 2011...both on qualifying and registering in time. The swimming with a buoy has actually served me well the past 9 weeks of injury...definitely not running or even close to the feeling but it is good for some calorie burning and keeping your ass from blowing up too much. :)

ReplyDeleteAh the Boston marathon - the Gucci handbag of racing - not any better than the Marine Corps, NYC, Chicago, San Diego, or various other marathons, but since it's "exclusive", it is oh so special.

I think the hardest thing about healing is staying off it and letting your body do the work and coming back too soon. Your plan sounds great. But until then, thanks for keeping us laughing... B/c I'm not on the list yet when I search and I promise I qualified less than a month ago on a certified course listed in their drop-down menu with online results available, and I'm not pulling any funny age stuff (like diff age on race day from qualifying day). Now I'm scared that I'm not verified. I see some friends from other qualifying marathons also aren't listed yet. First Boston and I'm super-excited and nervous about making sure I'm in. Since it sounds like you have a solid recovery plan (and a confirmed entry), I have no doubt you'll toe the line. Congrats!
