This has been a different kind of week. For sure.
Sunday I fell on a trail run, and by Monday my chin looked like this -> Do not be jealous of my youthful and smooth neck.
Then Monday came, the day the Virtual Run for Sherry was launched. I knew that a lot of people would be running. I did not know that thousands of people would be running. I did not know that I would be contacted for so many interviews or that the Channel 4 news team would come to my house today. Don’t they know I have a bruise on my chin?
Don’t get me wrong - I could not be happier about the word getting out and the tremendous response. It has touched me beyond words. Yet, it is completely overwhelming and wonderful at the same time. That’s why wine was invented.
News 4 story:
As always, moving my body de-stresses. I love to run but sometimes I am sore from running (or my chin is sore from running), and I need to do other things. Monday I was feeling frisky, so I went to boot camp thinking it would be no big deal. I mean, hell, I run marathons! Well, it was a big deal and I am still sore. I always thought a burpee was a cute name for something you do when you drink too much Coke really fast, but I quickly learned otherwise. I also learned that when steps and free weights and bands are involved I am my own personal freak show. I should charge people to watch me do Boot Camp. It would be comedy hour. I’ll never be a marine. Or, an astronaut.
Tonight some big, mean winter storm is supposed to move in (they even used the “B-word,” as in BLIZZARD – not talking Dairy Queen). Those meteorologists better not be lying again. I am secretly hoping for a snow day tomorrow. A snow day symbolizes a break from obligations. It is a day when life stands still and you give yourself permission to put your feet up and watch the peaceful scene outside until you turn around and scream at your kids because they are cooped up, bickering and driving you crazy.
I plan to sit by the fire while my children rub my feet and make me hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. They don’t know this part yet, but I am sure they will be agreeable. Saturday’s long run was to be done on the trails, but might have to be moved indoors.
Do you ever go to Boot Camp? Is it hard for you, or am I just a pussy?
What’s your favorite thing to do on snow days?
SUAR
I've never done boot camp. It looks hard. Most things that involve moving multiple parts of my body at the same time usually result in a freak show of some sort. It's not pretty. This is why I never played sports... moving my body and involving a ball in motion never worked for me. Running as a sport works for me.... too bad I didn't know that sooner.
ReplyDeleteThere is a sports conditioning class at my gym...aka Boot Camp...and I've never returned from it without being sore!
ReplyDeleteBeth, that is so freaking cool that you were on channel 4 spreading the word about the run for Sherry! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I used to do this Athletic Training class at the gym I go to and we'd have to sprint to the stop of the hill and do 75 burpees. SEVENTY FIVE!!!!!!! That was just a warm-up. The class always killed me...which made me pretty dang strong :).

Beth, your interview was great and I didn't even notice your chin-bruise - nice job with the concealer! I will be running for Sherry on Feb 11th.
ReplyDeleteI have never done boot camp but recently my Body Pump instructor has started making us do pushups and mountain climbers in between every set and I have been walking out shaking like a leaf. I kind of like it, though.
(I just heard St. Vrain schools are closed tomorrow - enjoy your snow day and schnapps! We got nuthin' up here in the mountains.)
So you are sore from Boot camp, well I'm sore from racing up and down mountains....
ReplyDeleteLove the news piece on Sherry, your are a star, a special person.

ReplyDeleteThe news clip was really awesome! I love it!
ReplyDeleteNever done Boot Camp - I am *that* much of a wimp.
Snow day means going outside in the snow of course!! Way more fun when you have a kid and a sled and a closed down school with wide open fields.

ReplyDeleteI have not done "boot camp" exactly; but I tried to work out with Jillian Michaels... I'm a wuss too! I can do the workout (most of it) but I certainly look something like Jerry Lewis in some of his older movies! Yeah, it's quite comical I'm sure -- if you're not the one tangled in your own appendages!
ReplyDeleteNo bruise visible on the news! Yea!
ReplyDeleteAlso- running is hard enough for me, thanks. I'm thinking of taking up aqua running, though.
So I seriously thought this was going to be a post about DQ...remembering back to that less-than-pleasant experience you once wrote about. But I am so delighted that the news picked up the story and is helping spread the word about Sherry's Virtual Run. I'll be doing it :)
ReplyDeleteBoot Camp. Yeah. I think that when I come visit you with all my kids in tow we should have a Boot Camp for our kids and make a video of it. How rad would that be? I'll tell you... TOO rad. And then they can bring us cocktails and rub our feet. I like that scenario :)
Wow. That really is quite a bruise. Glad you were able to hide it for the news so people don't think you're a victim of domestic abuse.
ReplyDeleteWhen I signed up at my gym, I got a free session with a trainer. She did the boot camp classes and I think she gave me a circuit of moves that she used in boot camp. It was actually the toughest workout I have ever done!
ReplyDeleteI should be doing a boot camp, or crossfit, or something of that sort! Instead I do my strength training on my own. But after this marathon, I want to get some regular fitness back. And I know it will hurt.
ReplyDeleteHave fun w/ that blizzard. We have had one whole inch of snow this year. My daffodils are up. It's crazy. If it didn't mean the world is melting down due to global warming, I wouldn't mind it, though!
I've never tried boot camp, but I have a couple friends who have and they love it. As for the snow, I love to go sledding with my kids!!
ReplyDeleteNever done a boot camp, but I do go to a gym (L.A. Boxing) 3 - 4 times a week and their cardio class is probably the closest thing w/o being an actual boot camp. Plenty of push-ups, burpees, hitting the bag, jumping jacks, ab stuff, etc etc. I find it to be a great addition to running!
ReplyDeleteBeth - the interview was very nice - you looked very relaxed talking to the reporter. I haven't commented much during this horrific ordeal . . . but know that I have been thinking of Sherry and her family.
ReplyDeleteI will be participating in the virtual run for Sherry.
Hoping peace and closure will come soon.
Linda
I think you got your wish of a snow day! Everything seems to be closed down but there doesn't seem to be that much snow down south where I live. On this snow day I will be trying to survive a day cooped up with a 2 and 4 year old!
ReplyDeleteI'm continually amazed that I can run marathons but a 60 minute cardio kickboxing class leaves me sore for a week. You are definitely not a wimp.
ReplyDeleteHope you get your snow day!
ReplyDeleteGood job on the news :) Your voice is um...more....softer maybe? Than I imagined it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't done boot camp but basically anything with weights leaves me sore! I can do cardio all day but not weights. My arms are string beans and can't handle that crap.
Hope you got your snow day! Love that the run has taken off like it has. It has to make you feel good that so many people want to help in some way.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love boot camp. Yes, it is hard but I figure if it wasn't you would think it wasn't doing anything for you.
Ow, sorry about your fall. Try running trail in the snow - I call it Kerplunking. Great workout but your calves will burn for a week afterwards. I won't touch Boot Camp but Farm Chores + an afternoon of Kerplunking followed by a day on the couch is prime snow-day activity around here.
ReplyDeleteThat was a nice TV report.
ReplyDeleteI think its amazing some times how tragedies motivate people to do some thing....look at what you are doing for her and your family/relatives. It's simply wonderful!
Her spirit will be running with you on the 11th...its a great tribute to her and for her.
Never done boot camp but bought some sessions through groupon and can't wait to use them! Sorry about your chin, ouch. Just in time for interviews:)
ReplyDeleteI did boot camp once and it kicked my butt. I was sore for several days afterwards and had to take them as rest days!
ReplyDeleteI love to do exactly what you do on snow days. Unfortunately, I don't think the forecasters got it right this time because I am at work and the snow is minimal. Dammit!
Looks like we definitely got our snow day! It is so beautiful outside!
ReplyDeleteFunny how people's voices sound different than you imagine them. :) Great news story. You better print out a bunch of extra bibs for your group run on the 11th - you might have quite a crowd!
ReplyDeleteI go to a bootcamp class every tuesday when i get off work. It's always challenging for me since it's different each week. I'm sore most every time. This week I thought I would run 5 miles on the treadmill, then go to bootcamp class. I will never do that again. Kicked my bootie and I'm still sore from Tuesday:)!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, heard you guys were going to get dumped on! Boot camp was easy, oh that's right I never joined the Armed Services..... Nevermind!
ReplyDeleteBeth -
ReplyDeleteJust a note to let you know I'm new to your blog, having been directed here by a DoLifeMovement member. I'm also a runner, a high-school teacher, a mom and a triathlete. On Saturday February 11 it just so happens that there is a local 10k race. I've printed a BUNCH of bibs in support of Sherry and we'll proudly be sporting them at that run.
PS? Any tips on mind-controlling my kid into bringing me hot chocolate w/schnapps? LOL
we totally got our snow day! yeah
ReplyDeleteWe definitely are getting a blizzard...wow!
ReplyDeleteI did a boot camp class a couple of weeks ago and I was more sore the day after that class then I was after Ironman Arizona...no joke! Boot camp classes are tough b/c they work different muscles then we normally use while running/biking!
Amazing. Amazing and so inspiring. Can't wait to do the run in Sherry's honor. (On a lighter note, your neck looks fantastic. And the bruise should be a badge of honor)
ReplyDeleteBurpees are DEFINITELY no joke. Once you learn what they are, it seems simple enough. We've all done a jumping jack, a "squat-thrust", and a pushup, as well as just leaping a few inches into the air with our arms held high...how hard can it really be.
ReplyDeleteI still remember the first time I tried to do a 10x ladder (10, 9, 8,...). Just about killed me.
Of course you fell trail running and now have a bruise to prove it. Because you are that kind of awesome - the kind we all adore.
ReplyDeleteI freaking LOVE Boot Camp!! Makes me feel strong!
ReplyDeleteI don't miss snow but I do kind of miss those blizzards. The ones that shut down schools and businesses and force you to stay home and relax. Ahh, those were nice.
ReplyDeleteI hate boot camp because it is so demoralizing for me! I completely suck at all that stuff and I want to die. If I was there with you we'd be 2 freak shows.
I haven't done bootcamp, but this morning my husband and I foolishly got up and went to our first group fitness class together. It was a strength training class; we do strength training, so no big deal, right? Yeah, right. I hurt in places I thought I was working well already. We are supposed to do a longish run tomorrow; we will see if we can even move!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the interview. I know quite a few who are planning to join in the virtual run all over the country, actually.
I love bootcamp so much and between that and running have lost 45 lbs in six months. I am planning on becoming a certified trainer so I can pay it forward. Love love love it. Yes it is hard, but it is so worth it!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at blizzard and I was hoping it was going to be a peanut butter cup one!
ReplyDeleteI've never done boot camp, I'm sure it's hard! Burpees are not for the weak, they hurt!! I loved the news story, your voice was pretty spot on for what I hear in my head. I'm glad it's such a big story!
ReplyDeleteOkay - remember how I used to tell you how much alike we are...?
ReplyDeleteWell, we also have the same computer, desk, and office chair.
Weird.
PS - the news piece rocked & we'll be running on the 11th.
Peace to you.
ha, I didn't know what a burpee was until 5 weeks ago either. I joined a fitness class that combines swimming sprints and doing boot camp tyoe stuff on deck. Ouch!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think that we runners run just because we're too uncoordinated to do any other sports. I've never been to boot camp but I've run past lots of them and they don't exactly entice me to join. After all they might cause my arms do develop some muscle and I quite like having stringy, shapeless runner's arms.
ReplyDeleteThere's always Zumba... ;P
ReplyDeleteHi Beth!
ReplyDeleteLoved the video! I will be runnning, here in Girona (Spain, near Barcelona) next Sat. Can't wait. Bib printed and laminated... I'm ready!
Nothing like a Bootcamp available around here... gotta make my own ;)
I go to bootcamp once a week and I think it helps my all round fitness but also my competitive edge as I always want to not be the slowest at anything. I am not a control freak though - never! lol
