The Best Way To Start Thanksgiving Day (Or Any Day)

I know I am preaching to the choir here, but there is NOTHING better than starting your day with a run. For me, if a run is amazing, a run on the trails of Colorado is ultra-incredible-amazing.

I love to wear this shirt because 1) it makes me look like a highlighter, and 2) the hunters don’t shoot me.

Ken, Joie, Tom and I headed out early for 10 miles in the foothills. We started super early, which means it is colder than snowman’s junk (23 degrees to be exact).

This isn’t the easiest of runs (1,600 feet of climbing). But, there is something about me that loves the challenge, loves the burn in my lungs and craves the exertion. Don’t pretend you don’t know what I mean. You love it too.

There were so many mule deer out there today…Ken was wondering why deer hadn’t adapted enough to get rid of their white asses. It would make them far less visible. One wonders if they bleach.

Later, we saw all the bucks:

Coming down is always tricky because of large boulders in the middle of the trail - but not for Ken who has turned into a mountain man with his No Shave November face mask:

Starting early meant getting home in time to make non-homemade rolls for the kids (who were still asleep):

Then there was some parade watching:

And, some going through the millions of Black Friday (Black Thursday now) ads. Emma is disgusted the stores now open on Thanksgiving night:

Did you get in a run today? Turkey Trot maybe?

  1. yes! We did a turkey trot this morning. A non-timed, no-fee, no water stops kinda run. Just show up at the Y, donate some $$ to the food pantry and then run! It's the second year the Y has done it and this year we had 160 people and raised $2100 for the food pantry!! So much fun and you are right, the BEST way to start Thanksgiving. Have a great day!

  2. Ran 8 miles with the dog. It was 73 degrees and dry, I downed a big bottle of gatorade when I got home. Don't hate! Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Did my own Turkey Trot here in NW MT with one other gal. Did an easy 4 then headed home. Now feeling stuffed :-) Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Yep, did a 5-miler Turkey Trot with 10,700 of my best friends. Great time, although I froze my giblets off at 18 degrees!

  5. No turkey trot, but I did get in 4.5 miles before the feasting started! You're a champ for running in weather that cold. I was completely bundled up in the 39 degrees here!

  6. Funny! my hubby likes your sense of humor and I often read your blog to him. He loved the bleach comment.

  8. Ya! 3 miles with my hub... and we never do training runs together. Must be love. I am most thankful of his (my hub's name is Ken too and also good looking) of his support of my running and racing! Happy Thanks Day to you and your family too!

  12. I did. Just a little 3 mile loop around the neighborhood. Felt good and it was so quiet and peaceful. Happy Thanksgiving.

  13. Ran 8 miles in Port St. Joe, Florida. ZERO elevation gain! It was 32 (feels like 29) when I got up. But the sun came out and I'm very thankful I can run.

  14. I ran on trails in northwest Montana. It was about 20 degrees. Then I got in my hot tub!

  15. With a foot of fresh snow everywhere, I opted for a couple miles on snowshoes.

  16. I made up my own Turkey Trot after the local TT wrecked my PR with a long course last year. Yeah, I hold grudges. The cool thing was that I saw so many people out walking, which I don't usually see.

  18. I got a little turkey trot action before heading off to gorge on thanksgiving dinner. The weather was in the 30's in Florida (and that is really cold for me) so I kept it short and sweet and bundled up from head to toe. We don't see the likes of that type of wildlife where I live. It's all snakes and alligators here.

  19. I ran on my own. I saw more people than usual out that morning, probably because I was running later than usual and (I'm guessing) they didn't have work?? It was still nice to see people out. I have a bright hunter orange jacket that I wear anytime I run out in the country. Don't want to be mistaken & shot. Eek!

  20. My husband and I did an early Turkey Day run. It was awesome because nobody else was out!

  21. I ran a 5k with my husband and 9 year old stepson. The Kiddo wanted a PR, so I coached him through and he exceeded my expectations with a HUGE 4 minute PR!!

  22. Ran a Thanksgiving day Half... Was going for a certain time and came in close to 10 mins faster and 12 minutes better than my last half for a new PR! Elated I was then, sore I am now! And I couldn't agree more... Black Friday is no longer Friday... ugh...

  23. This was a special Thanksgiving day Turkey Trot race for me because I ran it with my husband. It was his first 5K and I was thrilled to have him join me. I started running March 2012 so I had run that race before. We ran together and finished under 30 minutes - 10 minutes better than last year.

  24. I ran our local 5K TT with two good friends. It was 30 degress, sunny and fabulous. Really, there is no better way to start Thanksgiving Day!

  25. That run looks *so* cool. And those elevation changes combined with 10 miles, not to mention frigid temps, sounds like a killer! Sadly I didn't run on Thanksgiving.... but we did have cinnamon buns- you win some, you lose some ;)

  26. No run on turkey day... but Friday got a nice long one in. It helped that for Hanukkah got a ton of new running clothes that needed to be tested!

  27. Yep, sure did. My second running an 8K Turkey Day run sponsored by a local running store.

  28. Ran a 5 mile turkey trot that we do each year with a few friends. We could just run the miles, but we always race hard -- because yes, we too love the lung-searing, leg-burning sensation of a hard effort!

Colder than a Snowman's Junk. I am so using that this winter!

  29. Ran (one of the many) local turkey trots 5k benefiting the cross country team at the high school. Cold but not as cold as the run on Saturday - it was 11 degrees at the start of the 13 mile run. Too cold for NH in November!

platform out there right now. (from what
I've read) Is that what you are using on your blog?
