What’s Fresh This Week

Sometimes I’ll encounter a week in my life that has several new and exciting aspects. Such was the case this week (and you will see how un-exciting my life really is if these things are considered exciting - how many times can you use the word “exciting” in an sentence?).

Here’s what’s fresh:

New product:

photo

Have you seen these? I think companies are getting very, very desperate. There is no way that cappuccino and potato chips ever need to be mixed together and called a snack item. This marrying of flavors does not even make sense. Would you ever drink a cappuccino and eat a side of potato chips? Not likely.

New routine:

photo

The precious kids are back in school. I have about a day a minute of feeling lost and alone when they leave. Then it is party time with Heidi and my Lay’s Cappuccino Chips (yes, I wear slippers the entire year long).

New show:

I am late to loving this show. I know many of you have been watching it forever. I cannot get enough. Truth be told I have learned a ton from this program. Who knew that goat was the most eaten meat on the planet? Who knew that 100 year old eggs are really only a month old? Who knew you could put a pop tart crust on Mahi Mahi with a side of 100 year old egg/goat hash and it would taste good? (If you don’t watch the show, the chefs are given four random ingredients to create an appetizer, then an entrée then a dessert).

New view:

Driving into Boulder last night, the double rainbow appeared. I think the double rainbow epitomizes our society today. It is not enough anymore to see just one rainbow, but now there have to be two! I cannot remember a single time as a child when I saw a double rainbow. In fact, it was a rarity to even see a single, lonely rainbow. I think Mother Nature has upped her game.

New terrain:

Ironman training did not allow for a ton of trail running, mostly because it is difficult to ride 100 miles on your tri-bike on the trails. It is also difficult to swim on the trails. It felt incredible to get back out there on Sunday (Heil Ranch).  8 lovely miles into the wild.

New plan:

photo

I admit I am a training plan-addict. After “resting” for a week or two I was in no-man’s land. So, I have started a 9 week plan for the Runner's World Hat Trick in October (for 10% off coupon codes for the race, go HERE).  I took this plan from Competitor (I could make my own, but too lazy) and quickly realized it was a bit aggressive (what the hell do you mean 14 x 400 intervals at 3K pace??). Pass the cappuccino chips.

New opportunity:

I will be doing some writing for RunHaven.com. If you haven’t been over there, check it out HERE. It is an edgy site about all things running and training. Definitely not your cookie cutter running site.  My first article is up, so check it out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your turn:

Favorite new show? Chopped, but also Married.

Favorite new snack item? Well, it’s not new, but I’m really into ranch flavored Corn Nuts these days

Worst snack item out there? Cappuccino chips or watermelon Oreos

Favorite place to get training plans? If I don’t have a coach, I usually create my own.

Did your kids start school yet? You know, in the good old days, school was out Memorial Day to Labor Day. I wish that was still the case.

  1. New show: It's not new but anxiously waiting for Sons of Anarchy to start the new season.
New snack: It's kohlrabi season! Raw.
Worst snack: Corn nuts! ha ha
    Training plans: My hubby :)
School: Out until Tuesday after Labor Day

  2. Worst snack item out there?

Can I count something my cubical neighbor considers a snack? He eats cold Hormel chili out of a can. With a side of regular coke, usually warm.

  3. My oldest flies off to USC at 6 am tomorrow. Looks like she will be pulling an all nighter to pack. This does not surprise me. Then the local middle school / high school starts next Wednesday for the other two.

Circus peanuts - worst snack food evr created.

    1. USC! My son is looking at that school. What do you think??

      Delete
    2. She was torn between Cornell and USC. She chose USC because they gave her a good scholarship. She's in biomedical engineering, and it is top notch for that major. The school just got a $50 million gift to fund a new biomed engineering building.

USC is gorgeous, and the campus is "walled in" from LA. My daughter wanted a big city setting - you can't get much bigger than LA. She made the right choice.

    3. Thanks Joe. Not sure Sam's grades/scores, etc will be competitive enough to get him in or that we can afford it, but think we will take a trip to CA to check that one out as well as a few others (UC San Diego, UCLA). Your daughter sounds SMART!

    4. Does Sam play a musical instrument? USC's marching band is the best in the nation. My daughter is really smart (takes after her mom), but she was still rejected by UCLA and Stanford. You never know what a college is looking for - they have to fill all kinds of diversity demographics.

For finding the right school - enjoy the visits. It really is a great time seeing what schools have to offer. Roadtrip! San Dego is beautiful! Of course, after that comes the financial aid forms - they are a nightmare (and I'm an accountant by trade). Good luck with your first time through.

  4. New show: Extant (Halle Berry & sci-fi? WIN!)
New snack: whole wheat cappuccino muffins
Worst snack: All of the Unreal candy knock-offs. Blah.
    Training plans: USAFit/Tampa Bay Fit/Google search/neighbors
School: They started this week. Double blah.

  5. Hmmm, physics was not your favorite school subject, was it. There are in principle always two rainbows, but one is always weaker, and sometimes impossible to see with a naked eye. The stronger rainbow comes from the light bent on raindrops, the other one comes from the part of the light rays that reflected once withing raindrops... Both rainbows have opposite color spectrum. You are welcome :-))

  6. Favorite new show: bachelor in paradise (I know cheesy but love all the drama!)
Fave new snack: homemade protein bars, been experimenting with a lot of different recipes & they are really good!
Worst snack food: sunflower seeds, I just don't get the whole spitting thing, ewwww!
Training plan: my running coach, love her!
    Love your blog btw!

  8. hahaha Run Haven - I thought the logo read Run Shaven and I thought okaaaay, that'll have some interesting content. Congrats on the gig!
I've been getting ready for a half - trail (3200ft elevation gain, urgh) and eating (old fav) bread and cheese like no one's business.

  9. Did my kids start school yet? Yes, thank god, yesterday. My 17 year old made me almost have a nervous breakdown this summer. Everything I did when I was 17? It is coming back to haunt me. But he denies everything....

  10. I get mine From my RunKeeper app. Then I obsess about missing even one workout. It's a mind game to keep me out of trouble.

  11. You DON'T do 100 mile trail rides on your tri-bike? You don't?? I am crushed with disappointment to learn this. I thought for sure there must be some mountain streams you could swim in, sort of like a natural endless pool.

And then I was looking at that RunShaven opportunity, (look at the logo again) and didn't think that was right for you. I thought you were more a run any way you could kind of girl.

  12. I have 2 shows I watch. So You Think You Can Dance and Outlander (I <3 Jamie Frasier)
For a snack I like flavored Almonds. Cocoa, Sea Salt, Honey, you name it. Yum!
My children start school on Monday. My daughter is a senior (Where did the time go?) and my son is in 8th grade. I have spent my summer taking my daughter all over NC and the mid Atlantic looking at colleges. This is killing me.
    I feel so old.

  13. The Wasabi Ginger chips are amazing. Cappuccino sounds gross though, and my husband said it was indeed gross.

  14. Those cappuccino chips are a finalist in the Lays contest. The winner gets a million dollars. My entry was Bacon Cheeseburger, which sadly did not make the finals.

    1. Okay that kind of explains it, but still gross. Bacon cheeseburger = much better

  15. Favorite show right now: rehab addict
    Snack item: honey wheat pretzels
Training plans: haven't done many, but currently Hal Higdon
School: the day after Labor Day (Michigan)

  16. Show: Bachelor in paradise (although i feel dirty and cheap watching it). And Flipping the Block on HGTV.
SNack: Snap pea crisps- delish! And any kind of fruit... Dreading the end of summer and the end to all the yummy fresh fruits!
    Worst snack: processed cookies
Training plan: Following the 3:45 BQ marathon plan in the Run Less, Run Faster book, yet i am not running less... Am running two extra easy days. Except for strength workouts, i am not a superfan of cross training and i find i NEED the zone-out days of easy running.
School: yep- kindergarten, 6th, and 8th grades... And volleyball and gymnastics and and and and so many details that come with the start of school!

  17. Did you try the chips? I saw them at the grocery store and just couldn't do it. I love cappuccino's and everyone loves chips but, together? No. It reminds me of the time I ate bacon chocolate. or was it chocolate bacon? Not.the.best.idea.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wait, watermelon oreos? Gross! Also, that flavor of potatoe chips just shounds gross too. What are this companies thinking? They are going way outside the box.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I tried those chips- I threw up in my mouth. Yuck.

  20. Chopped is an awesome show. My favorite episodes are when the judges and/or other famous chefs compete against each other. I also saw them do a kids episode not too long ago - that was cool!

Those chips are a big NO. Any other flavor Oreo besides the original are a NO. I think I would really dig those dark chocolate covered blueberries (Goji - I think is the brand?), but I am too cheap to buy 'em.

School - my kids have been back in school since July 29. Summer was over long ago for us!

  22. Favorite new show? I'm also really into Chopped and have incorporated a couple things I've seen on there into my cooking. My husband hates the show, and thinks that Ted Allen has the easiest job in the world because all he does is count down from 5 and say "you've been chopped."

Favorite new snack item? 7 Layer Dip Combos. My husband bought these recently and they are absolutely amazing. I can't believe that a bunch of fake ingredients can actually taste like a 7 layer dip, complete with guacamole!

Worst snack item out there? I just saw the cappucino chips and can't believe something like that exists. I'm not going near them.

Favorite place to get training plans? Hal Higdon (FREE!), then modify it.

Did your kids start school yet? I have 4-month-old twins so they are in daycare, which I call school. If I didn't have the twins I'd be doing the Runner's World Hat Trick--oh well, maybe next year!

  23. Gah! I am following the same plan for my fall half. I recognized it immediately - I didn't even need to hear the 14 x 400 workout. It's a mean little thing, it is. I am almost done with week 7, and I'm getting it done. And I'm liking the results. My only complaint is that the midweek runs are quite long - many times 8-9 miles, and it's hard to get that in with my pace and schedule. But I make do.

  24. I love training plans, The one from Kara Gouchers book is my favorite, makes me do intervals! My kids are in school and I have a MIDDLE schooler. I couldn't stand middle school, of course it was Junior high back then. I admit to trying a cappuccino chip, someone bought them at work, imagine eating someone's bad coffee breath!

  25. So weird to see those Lays chips... I just bought "garlic bread" flavored Lays because they were on sale. Haven't tried them yet!

  26. I tried those horrendous cappuccino chips....and my poor taste buds went through h-e-double hockeysticks. I immediately chucked the bag of chips off to my husband, who tried one chip and proceeded to contort his face in agony. He then abandoned the entire bag of chips at his workplace the next day, and to those poor coworkers who fell into the chiptrap...God help their souls. I think these should be called "Lays Divorce Chips" because I'm pretty sure my husband considered it after I gave him these hehe! :) P.S. Your new pic on this homepage from Ironman Boulder is awesome! You look great!!!

  28. I thought that site was Run Shaven! I read the banner wrong at first glance. I was thinking that was quite edgy for sure.

My kids are both in college now and the empty nest syndrome has turned into now I have a workout/yoga room syndrome.

  29. Favorite new show? Life's Too Short, a Ricky Gervais production
Favorite new snack item? I'm on contest prep so snacks are limited, but when I cheat I do it with Nutella
Worst snack item out there? Dried fruit. Not into it.
Favorite place to get training plans? My trainer! He's not super creative though so I use his as a starting point and build on my own, and go to a bunch of classes at the gym.
Did your kids start school yet? My kids are dogs, and I can't get them to go to school for the life of me.

  30. You are right, they're desperate. I can't possibly come up with a worse snack idea than cappuccino potato chips. The worst I can come up with is mint oreos, because I think they taste like toothpaste.

Trader Joe's plantain chips are my favorite snack of late.

I do the Maffetone Method. No real plan, just heart rate training.

  31. I sooooooo get the training plan addiction.
I also agree with the over achievers training plan... what the???!!??? LMAO

  32. Married is hilarious!! Best new show I've seen in a long time. Love Chopped too - we watch it as a family and after they introduce the contestants, we pause it and each pick who we think the winner will be - adds a little to it when your chef gets chopped.
