Big Running Weekend Coming Up

I can't believe it's here already, but this weekend is my peak training weekend for the TransRockies Run, which starts in 17 days. If I accept the challenge before me, I will run about 57 miles this week, 40 of them on trails. Will be about 12 hours total of running.

I was beyond excited that my new Orange Mud Hydration Pack (the BPVP ) just arrived on my doorstep. It's a 70 ounce (2L) bladder (bigger than my own God-given bladder, which apparently can only hold 16-20 ounces of fluid before I wet myself), with plenty of room for fuel, my phone, first aid kit, etc. For TransRockies we are required to carry a jacket, a hat, a first aid kit, an emergency blanket (and other things I can't remember -probably tampons and condoms) on every run. So I needed something with a big bladder and some storage space.

I've put in some junk mile this week (about 17). Then today I ran 9 miles at Walker Ranch, which is a tough one for me. 2,000 feet of climbing, some technical trails, one snake.



Tomorrow I'll do a 20 miler with about 2,500 feet of gain. Then 11 miles on Sunday.

Basically I will be one with the trails. But, hopefully not like this:



What I learned this week:
  • You can never bring enough water. Or, have enough stored in your car at the trail head.
  • Cola flavored PowerBar Energy Blasts are the bomb.
  • The last song I hear on the radio is the only song I hear in my head the entire run (when I don't bring music, which I never do on trails). Today it was appropriately "Born to Run."
  • You can chafe wearing shorts you have been wearing for years that you never had a problem with before. WTF?
  • Not everyone on the trails knows the etiquette of who yields to who. Drives me nuts. Horses have the right of way before bikes and runners. Runners have the right of way before bikes. $50 fine!
  • These cups of oatmeal from Costco are quick to make, fit in a car cup holder and are the perfect pre-run breakfast.

  2. The song thing happens to me, too! However, it gets very irritating on long bike rides. I rode the Seattle to Portland bike ride last Saturday (206 miles in one day) and hummed Chicken Fried by The Zac Brown Band almost the whole time. :)

  3. My best pre-run breakfast lately has been fig bars, like these hippy organic fig newtons that are really good, with coffee. Lately I've been experiencing the good-shorts-that-start-to-chafe-out-of-nowhere phenomenon as well. WTF these worked all the other miles and now everything is on fire.

  4. I know exactly how you feel. The excitement before a massively big event conveyed by the arrival of some new gear. Still, one of these days you should consider sporting a grown-up hydration pack. Something larger than a postage stamp. Seriously, I think your shoulders are broad enough to support something that might actually be able to carry a carton of condoms, let alone all the required gear.

    1. What do you mean? This is a grown up pack! 70 ounces! Storage space! Oh, do you mean one of those 95 pound packs you carry? BTW, worked perfectly on today's run.

    2. I'm saying I think it's a bit skimpy. It shows an awful lot of skin. You have to think of skin protection out there running in the elements. Does it provide UV protection?

  5. Early mountain bike ride this morning. Now our sky is filled with orange smoke because of a fire here in So Cal, so running tomorrow is in doubt. I value my lungs.

  6. I should comment on your badassery, especially being able to complete your runs amid snakes---I would faint right there on the trail after hyperventilating, but I can't get over Kreidi. Love, love, love.

  8. I run with an oldschool Platypus Backdraft that holds 64 oz. I use it only when absolutely necessary, as I can run on in-town bike paths studded with drinking sources most of the time. Friends of mine were in visiting from CO recently and couldn't believe how we owned the roads on a recent 40 mile bike ride--no cars, other riders, etc. Trail running is kind of like that here too--not many other folks to content with. No mountains, though! --Wisconsin runner

  9. Love love Krosby and Heidi!!!! On another note do not listen to ACDC to often before TRR the theme song is Highwsy to Hell for 6 days!!!! Sounds Awesome on day one but by day six you want to get the hell off the highway!!! Ha ha! Have fun

  10. I am not too picky with my pre-long-run breakfast as long as it's carb-heavy. Toast and jam, bagel, mini donuts (!), they all work.

    That cat and dog cuddle pic is so cute!!

    Friday I had a long run planned up in the mountains where I live (San Diego). As I was running I saw a guy on a unicycle!! On the trail!!! That was a first for me.

    I use a Nathan hydration pack. It's great but the bite valve is leaking so I think I might need to buy a new bladder.

The last song I hear on the radio is the only song I hear in my head the entire run too, which is why I'm totally guilty of sitting in the car, in the trail head parking lot, surfing the radio until I find something better than the last awful song I heard driving TO the trail in the first place. Not ashamed.

  12. Horses really have the right of way on trails, over runners? Most of us in the horse world were taught that pedestrians always have right of way over horses.
