Just Look at That Ass

Last week's high training week has come and gone.

57 miles total with about 6,000 feet of gain.

One of the things that's been great about this training is discovering new routes and trails -for both running and discretely pooping. Even if these new routes kick my ass. The above picture was taken at the Switzerland Trail outside of Boulder.

Another spectacular thing about training for the Transrockies Run is that it's been a necessity to buy lots of new things (or maybe I have a running gear addiction and this just fuels it appropriately). Headlamp, 0 degree sleeping bag, first aid kit. Also, this windproof/waterproof running jacket from Sugoi. Usually costs $189 but I got it for $48 on the Ironman site.

Another purchase? New trail running shoes. You all know I'm a huge fan of the Brooks Pure Line. So, I tried out the Brooks Pure Grit trail shoes. Love. Very light weight, but enough substance to protect my feet from rocks. And hopefully snakes, mountain lions and bears.

By far my newest piece of gear is the Orange Mud Endurance Pack (BPVP70) - I'm wearing it in the first picture. I feel like Orange Mud really did their homework on this one. This pack sits up a bit higher than many hydration packs, so it really stays put. It is very adjustable for smaller framed-people. It holds 70 ounces of fluid, plus has a front pocket for additional smaller bottles. There is a storage area perfect for gels, gloves, phone, etc. If I have to carry a bunch of shit and liquid, then I want to do it in a pack like this because it only weighs 9.5 ounces and hugs onto my body so I (kinda) forget it's there. There are also bungee cord things on the back (not shown in below pic) for carrying trekking poles, jacket, etc. I think my only gripe is that the hose/tube for the bladder is a bit too long. Oh, and another fantastic thing about the Transrockies Run? On stage 3 (which is the toughest day apparently - 24.5 miles), we have a Beer Mile Race. Apparently this guarantees not only some puking, but some nakedness. This is the guy who won last year:

So, this week is my last big push right into taper time. So far -

Mon: Off
Tuesday: 3 miles (recovery)
Wed: 8 miles w/hills
Thursday: 7 miles (in Breckenridge at 11,000 feet) + 3 miles hiking
Friday: Off
Saturday: 10 miles (trail, 1,600 feet of gain)
Sunday: 21 miles - planned (3,500 feet of gain)

Total: 52 miles

On today's run:

To tell you the truth, I don't think I'm exactly prepared for this race. How does one exactly prepare to run 6 days straight, 120 miles total and 20,000 feet of climbing, most of it about 10,000 feet? But, I did what I could do with work, family and my reality TV/wine addiction. I know there will be people who put in many more miles. I also know there will be people coming from sea level who will struggle with altitude, so at least I have that on my side.

Regardless if I'm ready or not, here I go. 10 days from today.

  2. I once got drunk and ran home from a party-12 miles, barefoot. Not a great idea. My best hear purchase was my maternity support belt that kept me running until the week I delivered.

    Also, from here it looks like Mr Naked Man might be holding a hat over his junk in the front with his left hand. I'm hoping it's really some costume mask with a goofy face on it.

  3. I am genuinely excited for you Beth. Have fun. Every item of gear looks awesome. I have trouble believing that little pack holds 70 ounces. You'll likely need some of those velcro tie-ups. Doubt you'll need a 0° sleeping bag, bet that cost you some real coin. I ran my first two marathons, at 16 and 18 years of age, essentially drunk from the previous night's drinking. I don't recommend that for everyone. And I got my start to running by streaking in the 1970s.

    1. Thanks Ed! Yep, the tiny pack truly does hold 70 ounces. You can come measure it if you want. As for the sleeping bag - no it won't get close to 0 degrees out there, but I hate being cold more than anything in the world so I overcompensated a bit on that one. I think I will try your strategy of running drunk. You only live once.

    2. It truly holds 70 oz, or a 6 pack of beer (the CEO of Orange Mud tested this). I packed it on a MTB ride Saturday with a full 70 oz bladder, 2 sammiches, and extra snacks. The fabric is really stretchy.

  4. Hey SUAR, I think you can shorten the tube on your hydration bladder. See if it comes apart at the end that quick-releases from the bladder, cut it to the length you want, then reassemble it. I just had the opposite "problem", the tube on my hydration bladder was about 1 inch too short but my new one is perfect.
    I agree with Finding Balance, I think that guy is covering up with a hat.
    No and no.
    I think one of the most helpful things I have purchased for my running are S!Caps/salt pills. They make a difference for sure, no cramps, no gnarly headache.
    I am so happy for you for your race. You have been able to train really well!!

    1. Great thought on the tube. I will give it a shot. I, too, love the salt tabs. I take Salt Stick and I know it has saved me many times.

  6. I have the Pure Grit trail shoe. It has been really good, about 300 miles so far. I like to use as minimal shoe as possible but need some protection from gravel and these seem just right on both counts. I have a mountain half marathon coming up next weekend and I'm not looking forward to that, nevermind a six day mountain run! You are tough! Good luck!

  7. Wishing you an awesome race, and yes ultra runners have amazing bodies and are the nicest, most humble people on the planet. Your parents totally rock, mine are 80 and also very active...our mom's could be twins :)

  8. So the bladder tube isn't really Orange Mud's design flaw... it comes that way from HydraPak. And its *super* easy to cut the tube to your desired length :)

    So great your folks are out there on the trails and at elevation too! Sadly too many folks think they can't or shouldn't or whatever (makes me angry, a long, sad story). Keep hiking with them!!
    And depending on your camping elevation, that extra good sleeping bag may not be too much overkill. While camping last weekend at about 9200 ft, it was in the upper 30's (39 and 37) 2 of the 3 nights. Stay toasty my friend and burn up those trails.
