How to Prevent the Dreaded Ass-icle

I invented a new word this weekend.

Ass + Icicle = Assicle

This is a phenomenon that occurs when you are running in snow and 15 degree temperatures several days in a row and your butt (or at least mine) begins to numb, then freeze. Look! Your water freezes too!

IMG_5744

Does looking at this photo just make you cold? Well, it was.

IMG_5733

I always thought that since the butt (or at least mine) is mostly pure and lovely fat, it would keep me warm. But, I did some research (i.e., Googling “why does my butt freeze when I run?”) and found out this is SO not the case.

You see, fat may be a great insulator, but it doesn’t carry around blood like muscle does. Therefore, circulation is limited resulting in the dreaded assicle.

You cannot see it, but there is a block of ice between my lower back and my upper thighs.

IMG_5699

As you can guess, women are blessed with (as a stereotype) fattier asses than men (not fair, not fair at all), so we tend to freeze up more often. Ken never complains about his ass freezing. Never. But I did use this beard ice for my margarita later on.

IMG_5698

I am thinking deeply right now: I bet if Kim Kardashian ran in the cold she would have a monumental assicle. Just sayin’.

Ways to Prevent the Assicle:

  • Stay inside and watch Netflix
  • Build up extreme muscle in your butt (because this is SO very easy to do)
  • Wear an extra layer over your cheeks like a running skirt over tights
  • Run with a quilt tied around your waist
  • Wear a cycling jacket instead of a running jacket. They are longer (and have handy pockets in the back)

Yes, so it does take a bit more motivation and self talk to bundle up on these super cold days. But, the payoff? Peace, beauty and the honor of  labeling yourself a brave and courageous bad-ass. See my post HERE about tips for running in the cold.

IMG_5746

How’s the weather where you are? We are beginning to thaw out after almost a week of snow and bitter cold.

Do you get the assicle? If not, what part of your body gets the coldest while running? For me, it’s my face, my hands and my butt. My legs, core and feet are usually pretty warm.

  1. I commented on FB already but will relay here as well. If carrying water in a camelbak, blow the water back into the reservoir after drinking to keep the tube from freezing.

    3. Why does someone 'FROM CANADA' have a phone number from Nigeria. Or should I say, FROM NIGERIA? :P Oh you silly scammers, so predictably predictable!

  2. It's about zero here. I ran in a down skirt over tights the other day.

  3. You probably don't want to hear about our 68 degree weather in So Cal. It was 37 yesterday morning while I was mountain biking and the coldest thing for me was my fingers (toe covers work great over cycling shoes, but I haven't found the right gloves yet.)

    1. So Cal here too. I was going to comment on our under 70 "cold snap" the last few days, but I figured that would just be mean.

I HAVE pulled out a running top with long sleeves. Does that count as winter dressing?

    2. Then you guys DEFINITELY don't want to hear about our weather here in Florida! 70 was the low here when I ran this morning, still in low 80's. Still wearing shorts and tanks. Would appreciate some cooler temps though...

  4. It was in the low 40's yesterday evening during our run. And rain. We aren't lucky enough to get to run in the snow. We just dodged puddles. BUT we did run. In the rain. Dodging puddles.

My hands start out miserably cold but by the end of my runs, I'm stripping off my gloves.

  5. It was 73 today where I live. I don't do the cold. You are a major bad ass. I will say it is gorgeous though!

  6. Weather in Calgary is nice just now. A little above zero C (say 40 F max) during the day, and a little below in the evening (say 19 F). Perfect running weather. Not quite shorts weather in the evening, but maybe during the day if there is no wind.

No ass-icle here. When it gets a bit cold, say -25 F, I'm really careful of my fingertips, thighs, and maybe my ankles. At -35 F it's cheekbones and the area around and under glasses.

  7. I got the popsicle butt maybe once or twice last winter, when it was -100F. Ok, I may be exaggerating but seriously, it only happened when it was super cold. Wouldn't it be nice if the company that made those hand warmers made butt warmer undies?

  8. Quilted skirt to keep my quads and butt from freezing. Some of the best $ I spent! Mid 30s-40s here in WI.

  9. I am just a wimp, not so much the temps but fear that I will break my brittle 36 year old ankles, knees, any bone really (hence, wimp!). Any thoughts on winter running shoes? I currently use trail running shoes. What is everybody else using? I run on asphalt mostly, very few trails in downtown Denver.

    1. I just use my regular running shoes. If it's icy, I don't run or head out to the trails.

    2. Microspikes. They're pricey & only good on packed snow or ice but they'll definitely keep good grip.

  10. I think someone should design underwear with extra padding on the butt cheek side for ass-icle prone runners...functional and a fashion statement for sure.

  11. I love this, my butt freezes too. Glad to know I'm not alone in the assicle department.

  12. This made me laugh...always wondered why my butt was always cold...I just learned to live with hit but those are some good suggestions!

  13. My butt is always cold! I always wondered why... "biggest muscle in the body" and all that. Now I get it! Thanks SUAR! During the year of the polar vortex (winter of 2013 I think), I was tired of having a completely numb butt that I caved in and bought a pair of "Toasty Buns" quilted shorts from Athleta. They help a little bit, but I mostly just feel like I'm wearing a diaper. Maybe this year I'll invest in some tech wool underwear.

  14. My hands usually get the coldest, followed by my face, butt, and quads. I don't know why my quads get so cold, but they're like ice when I get home. I really want to get a pair of Lululemon's hot cheek shorts, which are insulated and meant for winter running/layering over tights. But I can't pull the trigger because they're not cheap!

We just got a ton of snow yesterday, but it's relatively warm. Which means it's wet, slushy snow. 6 miles in that this morning wasn't exactly fun, but better than -10!

  15. LOL! Ass-icle. Love it. My lower body never gets cold, not even my gluts. It's my upper body that freezes for the first mile or so (until the effects of the UA IR kick in).

  19. This is not Ass-Specific, but I run year round in the arctic mass land called Minnesota, and one of my must-wear items for keeping warm are a nice pair of Smart Wool over the calf (wool obviously) socks. They feel so nice and keep my entire body warm, including the ass.

  20. So I'm just sitting here drinking my coffee looking at the snow outside and the coffee landed on my computer screen when I read the Kardashian comment. When I run here in Wyoming? Both sets of cheeks are my first to freeze.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, assicle for sure here in MT. I could never figure out why my cheeks froze, as there's plenty of padding there. Now I know. :) Based on some commenters, I might have to check out the quilted skirt idea... We're also thawing out, finally. 15 degrees this morning felt WARM. I have Reynaud's too, so my hands are the next to go. When everyone else is still wearing thin springtime gloves, I'm in massive mittens.

  25. I've never experienced an assicle. I don't run long enough at one time to have that happen, I guess. I'm somewhere between you and Kim K, and I'm sure my assicle would be a pretty good size. :)
