Don't Be An Idiot! Do These 5 Things If You Plan to Run When You Travel

Very early tomorrow morning while you are sleeping sound in your beds, hopefully in an Ambien induced rest, I will be on a plane to Costa Rica. Bloody Mary anyone?

Like you guys. I run when I travel. I mean, I brush my teeth when I travel, so why wouldn't I run? It's just what I do, regardless of where I am. I also poop. Well, most of the time because traveling constipates me. TMI, but that's the theme of this blog anyway so get over it.

That said, you've got to prepare yourself to run somewhere new.
  1. Check the weather  - This is the biggest DUH ever, but some people don't do it. It's currently 40 degrees in Longmont, CO and will be 90 degrees in Tamarindo. I don't think my tights and ear warmers are going to work there. Naked running might work very well there, but then I'd scare the Ticos. My point is, know the weather so you can pack appropriately.
  2. Don't plan on speed. Running in a new place where you will probably get lost and where you will most likely be hungover (if you're on vacation) means you shouldn't plan your big interval and tempo workouts while traveling. Save that torture for when you get back.
  3. Check MMR. I don't mean to check if you've had your Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine (although that's a good idea too). But, check out May My Run. You can search by city and you can see running routes that other people have done where you are going.

  4. Remember the stuff! Don't forget to bring the obvious stuff you usually run with. Handhelds, GUs, condoms, etc.
  5. Use your resources. Before you go, see what's available to you to stay active other than running routes. Is there a fitness facility? Can you rent bikes? Is there a nearby pool to swim laps? Remember that if you are traveling outside of the US, most of the world (except for Burma, Liberia and the US!)  is on the metric system - that means if you are using a treadmill it will be in kms/hour for pace and distance.

That's all I got. Hasta luego!

When's the next time you're traveling? Tomorrow

Do you run when you go on vacation? Why/why not? Always

Most beautiful place you've ever run? Nevis, BVI

  1. Next time I'm traveling: I don't know. Maybe this summer?

Do I run on vacation?: Well, I have good intentions, usually. Sometimes I skip days. Or like when we went to Grande Prairie, Alberta at Christmas; I chose not to run in the 25 below temps (I called it a "rest week") -- and I swam at the local aquatic center instead.

    Most beautiful? Victoria, British Columbia

    1. Hey Jeff

I'm heading up to Grande Prairie in May. Hopefully it will have warmed up a little since you were there :)

    2. Oh yeah, it will be warmer then, and every run will be a group run... you'll be running with a group of pterodactyl sized mosquitoes! ;-)

  3. We are going to Hawaii Saturday and I plan on running at least once on each island we visit. I am not a daily running at home I typically run 3-4 times a weeks so I try to keep a similar schedule on vacation but I usually skip the long run, mostly because I am on vacation and want to sleep and don't want to take 90+ minutes out of the day for everyone to wait for me to get my 10miles in.

    1. Yeah, agreed. If I'm in marathon training I usually skip the long run too and keep it to a max of 6-8 miles.

  4. We are taking a cruise in May - Italy/Greece/Turkey. Not sure how much I'll run, but we are planning on mountain biking Mt. Etna.

Most beautiful place I've run is Tantalus Mountain on Oahu. There's a 10 mile loop with 1500' elevation gain in the first half. Less than 10 miles from Waikiki but you feel like you're in a tropical rain forest.

  5. Great ideas.... too easy to let obvious things slip right out of your mind when in a new place in "vacation mode."

  6. I love running on vacation. I can't really pinpoint the most beautiful place I have run, they are all very unique. I love running down the country roads of NC, I have a thing for old barns! and running through the battle fields in Yorktown Va is just simply awesome. I have also run around the bays in Idaho and alone the beaches in Hawaii. Its all beautiful! But nothing tops my daily runs here in Alaska, just gorgeous and the view is always changing!

  7. Beth!! You're going to Costa Rica! Jealous. I have such wanderlust! Yes, I run on vacation and when we travel. However, we went to Thailand for 3 weeks this last winter and it was hard to find places to run so I didn't get a lot of mileage. St. Croix, New Zealand, Hawaii... but you know, I think one of the prettiest places I've run are right here in my own region...oregon for sure. And California! Next time I travel? Hmmm... Not sure but I'm learning Spanish and have Ecuador on the brain. Have so much fun!!!

  8. Have fun in Costa Rica!

My next big vacation is a solo trip (my first!) to Ireland in May. I usually run on vacations (when I was in Switzerland, I did one run on the treadmill and was totally thrown by the KM for a second!), but that'll be 1.5-2 weeks post marathon so I may just give myself a break! :D

  9. A run route is the first thing we look at whenever we travel. That's the plus of having a Hubs who runs too! Even our vacations are travel related. We just finished a running cruise in the Caribbean!!!! The most beautiful place we ever ran had to have been Alaska. Another running cruise. :)

  10. Fab idea to MMR on holiday! I usually run 30 mins in one direction then 30 mins back or else I'd get lost...actually I have got lost before! I've ran in Cornwall and Northumberland, two beautiful places in the UK. Mind you it was pouring with rain most the time...we get a lot of rain here, especially on holiday....

  11. Have a fun trip! I always research running routes before I travel, especially to a new city. It's the best way to explore.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I infrequently run on vacation. Mostly because we end up staying with family and it's hard to mess with their schedules too much. When we actually stay at a hotel/resort or something, then we usually manage to run quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I really I enjoy running on holidays; I always feel like I see more interesting things while out running than I do when walking or driving.

The most beautiful places I've run are both in Norway: Tromsø (Midnight Sun Marathon) and Voss (just for fun).

Hope you have a wonderful vacation!

  14. Heading to Disney World tomorrow morning for a week long vacation with the kids. I packed more running clothes than normal clothes. I won't do my long run (got that done yesterday so i wouldn't have to totally skip it) but I will get 6 miles in most days. Hoping to get at least one run on the beach- never done that before!

  15. Such a true point about not expecting speed! No matter how many times I plan a new route on holiday, I still manage to get paranoid about going the wrong way, or distracted by something that looks more exciting...

Also, fed up of people saying running whilst away is weird - I mean the whole point about taking a break is time to do what you love, so why not run? Have a great time!

  16. Costa Rica is nice. I've been there a couple of times, but never run there. My next VaCa will be on the Mendocino, CA coast in May. I'll do some running there.
I always try to run where ever I am, but the best place so far has been Spain. There are great running paths on the Mediterranean in Marbella, Malaga and Almeria and they even have great trails inland in places like Quenca. I was there last year and the running was heaven.

  17. good tips! Love the MMR joke. I just got back from vacation. So I'm home for a while.

  22. about that metric system thingy.... as a Canadian, who grew up using the metric system, I am always surprised to find that every Canadian gym I go to has treadmills that do NOT use the metric system and I'm left trying to convert miles to km. At least it gives me something to do while I run! Have a great trip.

  23. My life became devastated when my husband sent me packing, after 8 years that we have been together. I was lost and helpless after trying so many ways to make my husband take me back. One day at work, i was absent minded not knowing that my boss was calling me, so he sat and asked me what its was all about i told him and he smiled and said that it was not a problem. I never understand what he meant by it wasn't a problem getting my husband back, he said he used a spell to get his wife back when she left him for another man and now they are together till date and at first i was shocked hearing such thing from my boss. He gave me an email address of the great spell caster who helped him get his wife back, i never believed this would work but i had no choice that to get in contact with the spell caster which i did, and he requested for my information and that of my husband to enable him cast the spell and i sent him the details, but after two days, my mom called me that my husband came pleading that he wants me back, i never believed it because it was just like a dream and i had to rush down to my mothers place and to my greatest surprise, my husband was kneeling before me pleading for forgiveness that he wants me and the kid back home, then i gave Happy a call regarding sudden change of my husband and he made it clear to me that my husband will love me till the end of the world, that he will never leave my sight. Now me and my husband is back together again and has started doing pleasant things he hasn't done before, he makes me happy and do what he is suppose to do as a man without nagging.
