I See London, I See France

This week I have been really busy with Heidi, my new child.

heidipella

Don’t even pretend she isn’t ridiculously gorgeous

You all weren’t kidding about the hair. I find clumps of it everywhere. Am I going to have to invest in a Dyson?  The FUR-minator comes from Amazon today, so that should help, right? In the spirit of repurposing, I might knit a sweater with all that hair (remember this book?), or perhaps make a merkin (everyone can use a pubic wig, right?).

IMAG1485

This is a very small sampling and yes, that is my new rug

I’ve been taking Heidi on long walks and even making her run a bit. It is my version of doggie boot camp. I have to get this bitch into shape (that is not derogatory, that is the proper term). I might have overdone it a couple days ago when we did a 3.5 mile run/walk.  We got home, she drank some water and proceeded to throw up everywhere. Oops – need to take it easy on her. It kind of reminded me of the Biggest Loser. Only I had to clean it up and Dolvett’s muscles weren’t around. Sam pulled the area rug onto the driveway and we hosed it down, but then we just threw it away and went to Home Depot to get another one. I think Heidi is smart enough that I can teach her to puke in the toilet from now on.

At least she doesn’t do this (yet). My friend texted me this photo of her dog last night (YES. LMAO):

IMG957234

In all the Heidi excitement I forgot to tell you all that Emma and I did the Diva Dash this past weekend. It is a 3 mile long course with 10 obstacles. I thought it was a very smart thing to do an obstacle course 2 weeks prior to my marathon because I am not injury prone enough (that was sarcasm).

Try not to look at my crotch shot – I have the best monkey bar form in the land:

image

This is not a proof

Somehow I climbed over a 12 foot high rope ladder, straddled tires and cruised through the monkey bars without breaking a hip. Overall, it was a blast and people take this thing very seriously. You should have seen some of the costumes. Cleavage everywhere. I don’t think this is a race I would have done normally, but it was a BLAST sharing it with Emma, her friend and her friend’s mom. Plus, there was beer at the end and beer at 10am is a good thing unless you do it everyday, then you are not a diva, you are an alcoholic.

Do you have a Dyson? Do you recommend it? Are you rich? (those things are pricey)

Ever done a Diva Dash or one of those obstacle course things like the Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, etc? I did the Muddy Buddy with Ken about 10 years ago.

What was your worst race picture ever? (this might be mine above)

  1. I have 3 dogs, two are labs and huge shedders. The dyson was the best purchase ever. And there is an attachment that is a dog brush that really is fantastic.

  2. I have a 90 lb Akita mix that sheds like crazy. We bought a refurbished Dyson and I much prefer my Kenmore canister sweeper over the Dyson. Maybe b/c its refurbished its not as great or I got a lemon or I'm just super OCD about my rug getter free of every single strand of hair. I've done the Warrior Dash and am doing Tough Mudder in September. Super excited!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I had an Australian shepherd that left his hair everywhere! The Dyson was the best investment ever. It was the only thing that could handle all the shedding!

  4. I have a dog that sheds a lot. I think at some point you learn to live with a little dog hair, ha. We have lint rollers in every room and in the car. I have never owned a Dyson - I've used other people's Dysons and hated how heavy and clunky they felt. I have an Oreck and it takes care of the dog hair just fine (and only weights 8 lbs)!

  5. Forgot to add that we have the Furminator, and it does help, but you have to remember to do it on an almost daily basis (which I can never seem to remember). I also like the Furminator spray (great for 'freshening up' the dog between baths).

  6. Monkey bar pic = speechless. Seriously, I got nothing, which is something.

Ran the Men's Health Urbanathlon in Chicago a couple of years ago, which included running a mile of stairs in Soldier Field. Epic. Made even better by my puking in front of a couple thousand people crowding the rope-wall obstacle at the finish line.

  7. I got a Dyson from HSN...with the payment plan, it didn't sting so bad price wise. It's a great vacuum, but I recommend trying one at a store first. (Costco has demo's sometimes) Dont know if I would have bought it if I had tested out the hose part beforehand. (It's very stiff, and when I pull to extend it, the machine sometimes falls over) I've always had crap luck with vacuums though. Maybe I'm too rough on them, I dunno. The Dyson cleans very very well, I'll give it that.

No I'm not rich, not even close :)

  8. I have a Dyson.......but not the DC41 Animal one. I have mixed reviews on it......I hate ALL plastic appliances! I am PINING for a SEBO X4..........AWESOME reviews on the pet hair. Between my Large Munsterlander and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever..I think after 3 years my Dyson is about to retire / expire!

  9. LMAO at the crotch shot...and I've never ever said LMAO in my life.

I have a Dyson, but it's old and the motor isn't the best anymore. And you You know how rich I am.... ;)

  11. The Furminator is AWESOME! You'll love it- and it will help a LOT if you brush her every day.

That event sounds fun! Glad you and Emma could rock it together.

  12. I have a German Shepherd. Crazy shedding this time of year! Brushing daily helps, but that's not always something I remember to do. Frequent bathing also helps. As for the vacuum, I've had several different brands and as long as its bag-less they work about the same. We've removed as much carpet from our home as possible, hard floors with area rugs work best for keeping the hair and vacuuming to a minimum.

When we have friends over, they comment on the dog hair... what? I just cleaned up! I think we kinda get use to it after a while and there becomes an acceptable level of stray hairs around. :) I agree with Christen, you learn to live with a little dog hair in corners and crevices!

  13. Take it easy on your pup. I know you're anxious to get the weight of her, but a 3.5mi run/walk might be a little too aggressive for her to start with. You don't want her to end up w/ a torn ACL...I did that to my dog :/ Cutting back on her food/treats will help tremendously.
BTW- I have the Miele canister vac...love it!

    1. Thanks - yes, I did realize that was a bit much for her (after the fact)!! Definitely do not want a torn ACL.

    2. I read somewhere (not sure if it's true) not to feed your dogs before you take them for a run. When my dog was younger and would run distances with me, I followed that advice and she never got sick. At one point she did all my long runs with me up to 18 miles.

  14. You definitely have to get the Dyson Animal. I didn't believe all of the hype, and certainly didn't want the price tag, but it is a savior. Certainly a dog parent must. And yes, as a PP stated, you have to brush every day. Be careful not to OVER brush certain areas though..my friend gave her dog a bald spot!

And yes, she is devastatingly gorgeous!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think a Diva Dash would be super fun!!
We have a Dyson (and, no, we aren't rich!)! I highly recommend it - we have had it almost 8 years so I've actually saved money on vacuum cleaners since I got it!! (I used to buy the $40-$60 ones about every year or year and a half).
Glad you didn't get injured with the race.
Looks like Heidi is fitting in really well (puking and all!).

  16. I own a Riccar vacuum because my dog destroyed my Bissel Pet Vac with all his hair. His hair melted the plastic brush that spins (whatever it is called lol). My Riccar has a metal spin brush that can withstand Frosty's never ending shedathons

    ReplyDelete
  17. That first picture is indeed gorgeous! The rest of them are... um... mildly disturbing. My dog enjoys pooping in the house, but doesn't shed, so I guess I should count my blessings where they lie (and fumigate)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I might love my Dyson more than my husband and daughter....lol. Seriously, best investment ever! I have an Australian Shepherd, same type of coat, it picks up everything!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love my Dyson. We've been using it for 5 1/2 years now with no problems. The bonus is our lab lets me use the attatchments to vaccum him! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have a dyson because I have 3 long hair cats....I got it at kohls with a 30% off coupon so it hurt a little less....IT IS WORTH IT!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I DO have a dyson and it is the most wonderful vacuum ever. my hubs coworkers chipped in and bought it for us as a wedding gift though, so we might have been cheating. :)
good luck with heidi. she is beautiful!

  22. I do have a Dyson. And no I'm not rich, I put aside money for a while.

All of my race pictures are bad. The worst one ever was OKC Memorial Marathon shot from 2011. It rained the whole time. A cold front blew in. I was miserable and that shot shows it.

Two words that are about to change your life: furminate OUTSIDE.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have a Lab... and the Dyson Animal. I previously owned a Dyson that was not the Animal and I freaking loved that thing. So when the dog came along I upgraded to the Dyson Animal. I must have gotten a lemon because it's average at best. Wish I had my old one back :(

Have done the Warrior Dash at Copper Mountain four years in a row with friends...heading back for #5 in August. The run/obstacles/MUD is fun...but the party is really why we go. Get a room right on the start/finish line and people watch all day. Then party all night with some great live bands. However, last year they only had a DJ (who was awful). Hope they bring the live bands back this year!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I do not have a Dyson, but I do have a Kirby. It is a fur sucking machine!!! I have 3 cats and a shed-tastic dog. And severe allergies to both. I am not rich, the Kirby was expensive, but it will last me the rest of my life hopefully (purchased two years ago at 26).

I love how clean my floors are after vacuuming now. And it picks up "pet stains" without having to drag out the carpet cleaner. Rocks my world!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are hysterical!!!!! Wish I got to meet with you more than that one time at the Boulder 70.3 I have a Great Dane and while her hair is really short it gets in every nook and cranny in this house.

  28. My golden retriever also pukes if she overdoes it (even when she's in shape) - mostly when she's been running around in the heat more than anything. We have to really watch it when we give her water after a hike or something - small amounts, and we keep her away from the rugs until she's cooled down. She's the BEST dog ever though, puke and all. My best friend :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. We have a Beagle/Jack Russell Terrier mix that sheds much more than I think that little dog should. We also have a Westie that, thankfully, hardly sheds at all. Then we have 2 cats, a long hair and a short hair, and they both shed a lot. The hardest thing for me to vacuum is the stairs. It was recommended I get a dyson stick vacuum. Ha, I looked at the price and decided that was waaaaaaay to much for a stairs vacuum. We have a Kenmore that does a fine job on the regular carpet.

Growing up we had a Golden, he was as handsome as Heidi is gorgeous. My mom had a Kirby and it worked great, she would take the attacment and vacuum the dog too. He loved it! I have no idea how (or why) she figured out he would sit still for it.

  30. I have a Dyson - the purple Animal one. I bought a refurbished one online and have never had a problem with it. I was simply AMAZED by all the stuff it sucked up the first time I used it. I guess amazed and horrified as the canister immediately filled up and, before, I had a vacuum bag that I replaced, oh, 2 times a year!

Heidi is beautiful! Never done a Diva Dash but my girls want to do a Color Run. I'm not too sure about being sprayed with paint while I run. I think Diva Dash would be a blast.

  31. We have a Dyson since we have an Alaskan Malamute and a cat; great vacuum, gets up SO much. We also have a Roomba that does a good job of keeping the pet hair down to a dull roar in the main living area.

  32. I have a Dyson which I hate for carpets...the thing is a monster. I have a Miehle which cost even more for hardwood. I love the Miehle.

  33. I have 2 furry beasts and a refurbished Dyson (DC7 I think - I really have no clue!) that's about 4 or 5 years old and still running strong! I love that thing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. No Dyson here...We have a central house vac system which is pretty awesome and works remarkably well, even though it is original to this house (late 70's).

We have a Furminator for our cat and that thing is amazing! Every time we use it (which is only about once a month) we get a pile of hair so large that we can actually shape a second cat out of it. Unfortunately our cat hates being Furminated and urinates uncontrollably ever time we bring it out. Hopefully Heidi will have a better reaction.

  37. The first time I used the Furminator on my dog (a lab mix) I was in awe. I sounded like I was trying out for the infomerical, but I couldn't help myself. She looked like she lost about 15 pounds.

Another thing to think about as you get Heidi in shape is that what's a comfortable temp for you might be warm for her. My dog slows way down - even on walks - as soon as temps get above 60, especially if the sun's shining. Every summer I start thinking she's finally trained to heel, but then the temps drop again and she's pulling out in front ...

  44. Love, love, love my Dyson. I've tried every brand out there and would, on average, replace the vaccuum yearly. Have had the Dyson (with 2-3 dogs depending on the year) for over 4 years, and it still works great! Worth every penny in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I did not read other's comments but I've had dogs for 14 years now and a regular vacuum will work just fine. Or if you buy a new one, shop around for one with lots of sucking power. ;) We have a Kenmore canister vac and it works just fine. I do not care for bagless vac's because the container fills quickly with fur then it loses suction power. Then you have to dump the thing and release all the dust you just sucked up. Stupid imnsho.

And yeah, ease Heidi into the running bit. She's gorgeous!!

  47. All my race pictures are awful. I've had a Dyson animal AND a Bissell. Truthfully, when I lost the Dyson in my divorce I thought I would miss it, but I don't. I'm also cheap and now I'm very poor. I have a flat coated retriever that is a black version of your dog. The furminator will help but we have to vacuum everyday or my OCD kicks in and I have a seizure. Thank god those sweet doggies are worth it.

  51. I have a malamute mix so I can totally relate to dog hair EVERYWHERE. She goes for car rides with us so her hair has pretty much over run my car too. Ash is a shelter rescue that we've had for about 5 months and we actually still do a run walk mix. She's HUGE she weighs 113 pounds but she told me she's just fluffy :) Actually she's on a diet. She was a chubby 108 when we got her and my kids like giving her treats to much.

  57. I have a Dyson too, love that thing! I have two dogs (pug and boxer) the pug sheds like there is not tomorrow and the Dyson has been great. And no, I am not rich...lol.

I run with our boxer. We just started running last year (he's 3) and he adjusted to running very easily. Our vet encouraged us to run him, and gave us some tips. Maybe you could check with the vet too.

BTW, LOVE the Biggest Loser reference! I absolutely love it when they puke!

  58. When we got our dog (lab mix), she was 7-8 months old (humane society was not sure) and she could barely walk around the block, her paws were that tender. Took about 4 months or so to get her up to 2-3 miles for our after dinner walks. Then my husband started running with her, she LOVED it. Sadly now her joints hold her back (she is 10+) and she can't run anymore (sad about that) but she still loves her walks although shorter during the summer, she HATES the heat. And while we do have a Dyson, which we got with credit card points that were expiring, I don't think it cleans much better than our previous fairly cheap Kenmore. But the Dyson is worth considering. What makes a huge difference for us is brushing. We use a curry comb which works quite well and is pretty inexpensive (got at Murdoch's). Good Luck in finding what works for you guys.

And all the best as Heidi continues to melt your heart!

Running my 1st obstacle race this weekend-Mud on the Mountain @ 7 Springs ski resort-7.7 miles, 22 obstacles. I haven't even looked at the course map, I'm scared to death! I've run a marathon, but don't think
I can cross the monkey bars! Other than running, haven't trained a bit! Argh!

  62. I have a dyson and I love it. We have two black labs and the function of the dyson is primarily dog hair removal.

I am not rich, in fact I am generally super cheap but got tired or replacing $100 vacuums every year or so. This one has been going strong since 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Just buy whatever vacuum works. You don't have to spend a bunch of money because no matter what you buy, unless you use it 3 times a week, or your dog stops shedding, it won't control the hair! We have 2 shedding dogs and, try as we did, we finally gave up and now all our couches are permanently covered with sheets. I vacuum at least 3 times a week and change the sheets that often. I am a slave to my dog hair!! I just love those damned dogs so much that all of this effort seems worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes Yes Yes, get the Dyson. WELL worth the money. I got the Dyson Animal(purple one) nearly 10 years ago and it's still going strong. I killed two $300 vaccums in 3 years before I finally bought the Dyson. The wet dog smell from them alone was enough to make me want to avoid using them but the fur just destroyed the suction. With regular filter washes, I haven't had any smell from the Dyson. It was pricey but better than replacing something "less" expensive every few years. Spend the money, you'll be glad you did.
Furminator = amazing. A nice summer shave doesn't hurt either!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Glad to see you weren't wearing your merkin for this photo! At least it would be relatively close to your natural color!
I don't have a dyson, I have a hoover windtunnel platinum. Love it for dog hair, but I have a short-haired Jack Russell who only sheds two times annually, from January to June and from June to January.

My worst race photo was the 2011 Broad Street run in Philadelphia. my photo was me sucking wind and wearing my headlights proudly, although they were going in two different directions - kind of like Marty Feldman's eyes. So great. Had that one made into an 8x10 for all to enjoy. Everyone asked me if I was cold or excited!

Best of luck with the dog!

  67. We also have a Dyson. The best thing about it is that my husband thinks it is really cool so he vacuums all the time now! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  68. She is GORGEOUS! My dog still throws up occasionally after she runs around too much, puppy tummy. Another reason you don't want to feed your dog before running is because this can cause bloat, which is when the stomach twists on itself, and it can kill the dog. It typically happens in deep chested dogs but all large breeds are susceptible. Just wanted to let you know!

    ReplyDelete
  69. My Golden always throws up his water if he drinks too much. So if he's super thirsty after a run, I let him drink some then put the water up so he doesn't drink too much. My husband and I always wanted to write a children's book called Homer Hair Everywhere. Cause you literally will find it everywhere now, and it will go everywhere with you.

  72. I always learn something new when I read your blog. Sadly, it's sometimes things I wish I didn't know...;)

We don't have a Dyson - we invested in a whole-house vac when we built (Beam) and it was the best money we put into our home. We don't have any pets that shed (just a goldfish) but we have four kids who seem to shed goldfish crackers and crayon wrappers. (Sidenote: Our 3-year-old NAMED our goldfish "Crackers" - just an amusing anecdote).

    ReplyDelete
  73. check out refurbished Dysons. Much cheaper! Amazon has them. We bought one 5-6 years ago and it is still going strong.

  74. We got a Kirby vacuum when we our golden retriever was young. Unfortunately, our golden retriever is no longer with us but our Kirby is still going strong 13 years later. It works great sweeping up the black fur of our current retriever mix.

I take him to the groomer every 3 months and that really cuts down on the fur all over the house. In fact, when I start noticing fur lying around, I realize that it's time to call the groomer.

I also have a Dyson Animal which is the best vacuum I've ever owned and worth every penny.
