Vegas Style Triathlon

I killed myself to get in all of my Ironman training before I left for Vegas.  I wanted to leave my schedule open to do the Vegas Triathlon, which is drinking-blackjack-pool. I will let you know that I got a PR this trip.

Here’s how IM training shook out last week, PV (Pre-Vegas):

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 2,800 yard swim, 6 mile run
Wednesday: 40 mile bike, 4 mile run
Thursday: 2,300 yard swim, 5 mile run
Friday: 1,900 yard swim, 22 mile bike
Saturday: 100 mile bike
Sunday: Rest (Vegas baby)

Total miles: 181 (swim ~ 4 miles , run 15 miles, bike 162 miles)
Total workouts: 9
Total hours: 14 hours, 20 minutes

I am not going to lie. That 100 mile ride killed me. I rode most of the Boulder Ironman course. I’m not sure if it was the heavy week of training prior to the ride, or what, but I was DONE. Stick a fork in me (hate that expression). How about – take me out of the toaster, I’m toast?

Now I’m home, having returned from Vegas poorer and more dehydrated than when I left, but my stomach is aching from laughing so much and I have a nice tan. I’ll take the good with the bad.

What else was good? This view from our room at the Wynn.

I prefer a view of the golf course, pool and mountains to a view of the Strip. Does that make me weird? I don’t care. I did, however, run on the Strip at 7:00 a.m. when it was 95 degrees. It was me, the prostitutes, the homeless and the tourists. Very scenic. I wore my new shoes, the Asics Gel Electro 33s (review coming soon).

I love walking through this fairyland of lights and fresh flowers, even if I look like a ragged tourist.

IMAG3238

We could not get over the hot air balloon made of real flowers.

Everything always has to be the biggest and best and most obnoxious in Vegas. Did you know there is a new ferris wheel on the Strip called the High Roller? It is, of course, the biggest ferris wheel in the world.

Each of those pods actually holds 40 people. Here I am in the black dress:

Just kidding. That’s not me. I didn’t even ride the damn thing. Erika and I were too busy ordering room service at midnight and hanging out in our hotel robes (which I am sure 4,318 other people have worn, but I don’t really care to think about that).

There you have it. Girls’ trip year #12.

Where are you vacationing this summer? Not sure. We were thinking about a trip to Phoenix because my son want to tour ASU and I love 150 degree temperatures.

Would you pay $35 to ride in that ferris wheel at night? (35 minute ride). Probably would do it if my kids were with me.

  1. I'm off to Europe on Sunday for 3 weeks. And of course there's a race in there. I'm doing IM Luxembourg 70.3. Because why else would you go to Luxembourg? We're staying there for a week (the race is on the 21st), then we're off to Italy for a week, then France. I cannot wait. No way in hell I'd get on that ferris wheel. You'd have to pay ME $35 to get on it, ha ha.

  2. Sounds like a great time. I love how you enjoy life!

  3. Oh, how I love the Wynn, and like you I prefer the golf course view to the Strip. The only bad thing about that side is on Fridays and Saturdays, it sometimes sounds like the DJs from XS are *right there*...

  5. I've never been to Vegas but someday...

I vacation plans to go up to Maine twice this summer. The first for July 4th weekend to run a 5k near the ocean (I can't wait!) and eat lobster. The next one is in September to the same place in Maine to eat more lobster. :)

No ferris wheels for me. I'm not a fan.

Glad you had fun in Vegas!

  6. This summer is all about camping and staycationing but hopefully wine country in the fall! And I would ride that thing but I would need about two glasses of wine first.

  7. Ha. Last time I was in Vegas and ran the strip at 7am I was chased by a homeless man who was yelling "I love pussy!" Truly. Terrifying. Then there were the drunk bridesmaids, still in their dresses, running toward me singing the Rocky theme song and air boxing me. Vegas is such a special place.

In other news, I swam 2500 yards the other day and afterward could've fallen asleep standing up. I hope to be awesome like you someday.

  8. Hello, Neat post. There is an issue along with your site in internet explorer, could
test this? IE nonetheless is the marketplace
chief and a good component of people will pass over your excellent
    writing because of this problem.

  10. Wow, I bet you are loving the heat in Vegas. JK. Yeah, $35 to ride the wheel at night? I'll pass. I've done it in Seattle, so I am sure it is similar but with more lights.

  12. My sister and I did Vegas last year for our annual sister trip. We stayed at the Palazzo, which was amazing! I didn't bring my running shoes--but we did a ton of walking, laughing, eating, and sunning. What a good time! This year we're going to Charleston, SC. For sure it will be hot and humid!

  13. I'm going to Vegas next month for the first time as a runner. I like the idea of running the strip in the morning, but I was wondering what the situation was like. Were there a good deal of other runners out there? I was kind of worried it would just be me, some people just heading back to their resorts and homeless people.

  14. I am too scared to ride that Ferris Wheel! But, if I wasn't scared, it would be a cool experience it worth $35.

  20. I'm going to Punta Cana with my bf in July, and that's our big vacation. We'll be in Vegas in November (I'm running the marathon). I love Vegas. We go every year.

  21. I'm hitting all 4 corners of the USA this year. Mackinac Island, MI, Boston MA, St. Pete's FL and San Diego, CA! Whoo hoo--it's gonna be a fun year! No to the ferris wheel, I could never get my husband on it--he hates heights.

  22. Off to Utah, Idaho, and Montana. Looking forward to running in CDA.
No way $35 for a ferris wheel. Too cheap and I am terrified of heights.

  23. I'm going to Colorado Springs and running in the July 4th 1/2 marathon (my first run in altitude - I'm from Texas), to celebrate my 40th birthday. Because I want to ring in my 40's with a healthy dose of sadomasochism.

  24. We are going to the Outer Banks of NC next week and running a 5k there. Yes, I'd pay to ride the ferris wheel. :)

  25. We already had our vacation in San Fran where I competed in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and the Sharkfest the following weekend. It was great-cool, foggy, and good food and friends.
Phoenix in the summer at the resorts can be quite fun and it's not 150...doesn't get past 112 usually.
