The Day I Aged 20 Years

Like most people, I think of the most random things while I’m running, biking and swimming. My mind takes these weird turns that I am positive would not happen if I was hanging out at home making muffins. Most of the time I am thinking about how much longer I have to endure the workout or where I can find the nearest bathroom, but sometimes I get in this detached mental state full of deep thoughts.

Today’s specialty random thought was: I wonder what kind of pace Philippides kept while he was running the first ever marathon from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. I know he was delivering pertinent information about the war, so he was on a mission.  He must have been keeping a pretty good pace since he died at the end. Too bad he wasn’t wearing a Garmin that archeologists could have dug up and charged to find out his stats.

Being so random, I had to think back as to why this popped into my head. Of all things, I was listening on my iPod to an old Cat Stevens song where he sings in Greek and voila! Please tell me I am not the only person who goes into weird thought processes while out on the roads. I do know I am the only person who still listens to Cat Stevens.

Following are a few random pictures from the week. Some ugly, some sweet, some pointless.

Picture #1: On Saturday some friends and I did a long brick workout. We started with a mile open water swim, followed by a 60 mile bike, then a 9.3 mile run. Coincidentally, this ended up being exactly 70.3 miles (totally unintended mileage, but cool nonetheless). This is a picture of me transitioning from the bike to the run. I am indeed proud to look 20 years older than I really am. That natural wave in my hair is due to reservoir water + e-coli.

Picture #2: Please tell me my kids are not the only ones who still my phone and take selfies for no reason. I found this one today.

IMAG3259

Picture #3: If you have ever wondered or cared why I am so nutty (and crude), look no further than my own hilarious dad. This was on Saturday night at a fundraiser/silent auction we went to. The red light saber I am holding is to commemorate our dead dog, Lucky, who always had his lipstick hanging out if you know what I mean.

Picture #4: On Sunday we finally got to return to the spot of one of our favorite trail runs. Heil Ranch in Boulder County has been closed since September due to the big 100 year flood. It finally opened back up a couple of weeks ago.

IMAG3266

Picture #5: After coming home from the run, a friend posted this picture on Facebook. Guess where it was taken? Heil Ranch on Sunday soon after we were there. Cute baby bear cubs become not so cute when mama bear shows up and eats you.

Picture #6: This last picture is not from this week, but is to honor my dear husband on our 19th wedding anniversary, which is today! June 17, 1995. Columbia, Maryland. Best decision I ever made.

How many years have you been married? Where were you married? 19 years, my parent’s backyard, Columbia, MD.

What do you think about (mostly) when you run? Lots of times I also plan dinner and make grocery lists. If I’m pissed about something, I’ll perseverate on that for a bit.

  1. October 2nd will make 21 years married. We married at the Bear Mountain Inn, in Bear Mountain, NY. It was a gorgeous fall day and probably the most fun I have ever had at a wedding.

When I run I think of things like, "when will I be finished." "Why does my calf hurt?" I wonder what beer is on special?"
Usually I listen to music and try not to annoy anyone when I sing out loud.

  2. Ok, the lipstick thing? We call it a pencil at my house.

I think about lots of random things when I run. I believe it is called "flight of ideas"...

  3. That trail run is breathtaking! I live in a city in Australia, Melbourne, very different sights here! On my long run the other day, I was thinking about how one day, I'm going to buy a tandem bike to share with my 6 year old daughter. She watched 'The Goodies' on DVD and they ride on one, so she's keen! When I told my husband my plans, he was all, yeah, we will buy it when she's 8. Pfft! We have been married for 9 years. Hired a farmhouse in a beach side town, got married outside in the garden and had the reception/party there. Hired a jukebox etc. Best fun! Congrats on your anniversary! xxxxx

  4. "Miles from nowhere....guess I'll take my time....oh yeah...to reach there." You're not the only one who still listens to Cat. He got me through the first year of college!

  5. 20 years in December, MN, catholic church. While running I go through my list of friends/family/clients/pets that need a shout out from the big guy and say a prayer. Then I try to say a gratitude prayer, especially when my runs are sucking. :) Other than that my thoughts are totally random, typically involving dinner plans.

  6. I have deep and weird thoughts too. Once I was pretty sure I figured out the time space continuum.

  7. Congrats on your anniversary!!!
    1. Not married. 2. My thoughts are all over the place, most of the time I'm figuring out distance and pace. I came up with the solution for world peace once but was so happy when I finished my run I forgot what it was. I apologize to the world for that lol

  8. Happy anniversary!! I try not to think about the time when I'm working out. It takes so much longer when I do

  9. Congratulations on 19 years! I've been married almost 4. We had our ceremony in a park in Sanford, FL and then held our reception at a cool imported furniture store. If I had it to do over again, I would do the exact same thing. I loved it.

If I'm running alone, I'm probably thinking about zombies. Maybe specific Walking Dead scenes or trying to figure out how I think the apocalypse will really go down, but usually, I just think about how I could use random objects I see on the sides of the road in case my town was overrun with zombies. The other day, I saw 3 (three!) mattress/box spring sets within a mile. Those would be useful in so many ways. Hiding place, fortress, warmth, weaponry.

  10. Totally random thoughts, while running, are my specialty. I have Cat Stevens on my playlist too:) 21 years & counting!

  11. Happy Anniversary! Mine was yesterday, June 16th. Thirty years, egad!

  12. I met my husband 19 years ago today at his brother's wedding. Popular date! Happy Anniversary!

When I run, I think about how productive I am going to be when I get home and then I end up showering and sitting on the couch!

  13. I actually listen to Cat Stevens on my ipod when I run, you are NOT alone! :)

  14. July 20, 2002--almost 12 years ago, in Grand Rapids, MI.

I think about my to-do list waiting at home. And what I'll refuel with when I get there. Sometimes I think about what changes I see in the landscape (usually it's new houses being built since I mostly run through subdivisions).

  15. 29 years. In our home. Total wedding cost was about $50 including the license, the cake, but not including the phone call to try to round up my errant "best" man. I was stood up at my own wedding, but not the way that saying normally implies.

What I think about when running depends a great deal on circumstance. Some of it you don't want to know.

  16. I'm on my 2nd marriage (let's call it the one that really counts) and we've been married for almost 5 years. We got married in a little church that I'd always wanted to get married in.

I think about all sorts of things on my run too but a lot of time it's "how much further do I have to go?!?" So, on my longer runs I'm trying to work on that and enjoy the sights more than complain. Let's see how that works out.

  17. Married almost 12 years. I do math problems when I run, but try to keep it relevant: if I want my average pace to be X, I need to run the rest at an average of Y. That can sometimes take a while to work out.

  18. Happy Anniversary, Beth!! :)
    Miss you!

  20. I've been married 18 years, and we got married on the beach in Destin, Florida. I think about completely random things on my run, but usually it has to do with how much further I have to go (14 miles....that's less than 5 5ks!!), or my pace, but I am fortunate enough to live in Germany and the scenery is always gorgeous, so a lot of times I'm simply focusing on taking in my surroundings. Oh, and I just so happen to be registered to run the Athens Classic marathon this November. Hopefully I won't die at the end.

  21. Married 13 years in Memphis, TN. Live here and visited Graceland once. Usually think about old memories, what my life would be like if I made different choices. And sometimes I find solutions to problems at work (programmer) that I couldn't figure out when I'm there.

  22. I've been married nearly 18 years. Absolutely floors me that it's been that long!
You're not alone..... I have one Cat Stevens song on my running playlist. ( Oh Very Young) I will turn 40 in a few months so might as well convince myself.
While running I think of everything and anything but usually what I'm going to do when I'm done. At some point during the run I always think how lucky I am to be able to be out doing what I love!!!!

  23. Happy Anniversary! :)
I got married in 2012 so I'm still a newbie.

  27. Married for 12 years (10/6/2001) - 25 days after 9/11 - in what became our home church by the priest who then baptized all 4 of our children.

I think about so many random things while I'm running that it's probably best if people don't know. I like being thought of as mostly sane. ;)

  28. 8 years on July 2nd, Santa Cruz, CA on a cliff over the ocean - loved it ;)

Be thankful your daughter only took one picture. Yesterday I deleted 133 random pics (mostly of her forehead) that my 4 year old took in the span of two minutes! I gotta keep better track of my phone :)

  30. Married 34 years to the love of my life; best decision ever, I got the better end of the deal. Married in the church we met at.

I think of lots of random things while running, too Might be about work, home, or the theory of relativity, although usually more like when is this going to be DONE?!

  31. Oh Caritas, great Cat Stevens song on a great album!

  32. 2 things, first, Happy Anniversary! My parent's anniversary is 6/17 as well, they have been married for 47 years. Second, I listen to one Cat Stevens song while running, "Can't Keep it in".

  33. Married 15 years this September (9/18/99 is our wedding date). We were married outdoors at Chesterwood in Stockbridge, MA the day after Hurricane Floyd went through the area. It was a lovely day, but I spent many hours that week crying in front of The Weather Channel!

  34. Married 19 years... December 1994 in the Salt Lake Temple. It was sooooooo cold that day.

My thoughts are totally random and scrambled when I run. I'm glad nobody can hear my thoughts. Sometimes I pretend I'm running in a movie (this works best when a really awesome song comes on).

  35. A friend of mine calls the dog's lipstick.... the blood diamond. Which cracks me up every.single.time.

    Happy anniversary!

  36. Happy Anniversary! I will be married 8 years in October.

Some randomness-I'm from Columbia MD and was living there when you got married and I'm reading this while in Boulder-I'm visiting for a family wedding this weekend!

I'm usually trying to plan out my week/meals/schedule with kids while I run. Not fun but its got get done sometime!

  37. Happy Anniversary! My wife and I share the same anniversary date as you - we celebrated #25 yesterday!

And pic #4 - our dearly departed black lab, Travis T. O'Justice (nicknamed T-Dog) had the same, err, problem. We called it the red rocket.

  40. Lipstick. Why I will never own a male dog. Ever. I need no help embarassing myself when company is over.

  41. When I was in college, we got bears all the time on campus. Totally random, since that was in Florida.

Happy anniversary! My hubby and I will be married 4 years this July. (I kind of hate the word hubby, why do I keep using it?!) It seems like such a short time, but I feel like I've been with him forever.

  42. September 10th will be 20 years. Registry office and then for a curry. Our daughter was 6 months old. Now hubby is training for a 135 mile Ultra in August and I am happy plodding along for 6-7 miles 3 times a week! Love your blog!

  43. My husband I got married 15 years ago on a farm in MI. We had our reception in the barn and it was a hoot! My thinking is always random because I jump around from thought to thought and one thing leads to another. I think about things that are puzzling me and what to do, then I may think about my breathing, or if I am clenching my fists or if I need to relax more. Sometimes I start to count in my head...I'll get to 8 then I start over. I do this until I realize I'm doing it then I think about why am I doing this??? There are also many times when I think about your blog entries... for example, whenever I see an animal, I remember your post / question what animals did you see today? Dead snake, turtle shell, bird, bird, bird, oops just snorted a bug. Then I think about how many bugs I've snorted or eaten then I think about the statistics on allowable bug parts in packaged food...

  45. Hi! Recent follower here, but I've never commented.
My thoughts go all over the place while I run - but seriously, how has no one ever wondered what Philippides' pace was on his marathon? Or maybe no one has voiced that question before? Either way, now you have me wondering.
I think I have my best runs when I'm PO'ed about something. It makes me run harder without feeling the pain, but I finish feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Random note: I live in Savage, MD, about 10 minutes from Columbia. I love Columbia :)

  46. Today, June 18th, is my 31 wedding anniversary. We were married quite young but didn't know any better. Today on my run, I thought that 31 years ago I wouldn't have dreamed I would be running. Heck, I'm 51...and running??!!?? Congrats to you!

  47. Happy Anniversary! We celebrated our 17th anniversary in May. Married in Las Vegas but not by Elvis :) My mind usually wanders aimlessly during a run.

  48. Married 22 years in my parents back yard too! I love thinking random thoughts on my runs!

  49. I've never been married, I'm far too grumpy for that kind of thing! My mind goes to the oddest places when I run, I quite like it. So much so, I'm kind of disappointed when someone wants to run with me...

  50. Married 11 years this August, together since high school (puke cute, I know) so 20-something-I-don't-want-to-add-as-it-makes-me-feel-way-old-long-years!

While I run, I usually think about what I'm going to eat after- I find bacon cheeseburgers incredibly motivating!

  51. I've been married almost seven years. We didn't want there to be a big wedding ordeal so we got married in our little courthouse. We didn't tell ANYONE until almost a month later. Congrats on your anniversary! When I am running, I am mostly thinking about what I want to eat / drink afterwards. I'm 100 percent motivated by food. During my last half marathon, I was planning on the toppings that I would have on my frozen yogurt and where I could find awesome Pad See Ew

  52. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary on June 24th! Got married in eastern OR. Hmmm...when I run I think about all the food I'll eat when the run is over with.
