This Post Will Make You Hungry

What my weekend has involved…

Taking care of a sick Spaniard (I just gave him some tapas with Nyquil on top):

Letting Heidi learn how to drive because everyone needs a hairy designated driver:

Wondering how my baby is not a baby anymore (she got her braces of this week! No more brace face around here):

photo

Ordering this god-awful sweatshirt for my son (no this is not a joke. This is on his Christmas list. I told him he is going to attract some bees and butterflies).

Cookie baking on crack.  10 different kinds of cookies, my friends.

{Can you tell which two of the above are related? I kind of think we all look a a bit related}.

I did not run today, but I did do a cookie marathon in 3 hours and 49 minutes, so I’m good.

This is the first year we did not have any cookies that turned out like dog turds. They were all amazing, so I feel I should share you these winner recipes (yes, these are the actual pictures of OUR cookies):

1.S’mores Cookies  -> These are outstanding. A real crowd pleaser.

2. Walnut Brandy Balls

3. White Chocolate Cheesecake Cookies:

4. Pistachio Cherry Chocolate Cookies –> From America’s Test Kitchen and I cannot find recipe online!

5. Cashew Icebox Cookies with Butterscotch:

6. Lemon Cream Icebox Cookies:

7. Million Dollar Cookies –> These are Joie’s grandma’s famous recipe, which I don’t have (or she’d have to kill me) but the link is similar.

photo

8. Cocoa Nut Balls –> These are a family recipe that I had growing up. Can’t find the recipe on line!

9. Peanut Butter Blossoms –> An annual favorite.

10. Oreo Peppermint Crunch Cookies with Chocolate Chips –> These were a huge hit. You make them with a white cake mix. So very easy and yummy.

Happy baking!

What's your favorite Christmas cookie?

Anyone sick in your house right now? There is SO much crap going around it’s ridiculous.

Did you ever have braces? Yes, I got them off when I was 12 and the next week I hit my mouth on someone’s head and knocked out some teeth. Nice.

  1. Holy crap that's a lot of cookies. I made shortbread today and that took me 2 goddam hours. At least it seemed like it. I got braces when I was 19 and got them off at 21. Thankfully I had a boyfriend at the time or else I don't think I would have gotten a date for the entire time I had them on.

  2. Whoa! This is the first year I haven't made any cookies by this time in December, and I don't know if I even will before Christmas....no time and no one to make them for. Jealous of yours!

  3. My sister knocked her front teeth out two weeks after getting her braces off on a trampoline at school. 30 years later she has implants for the front two (calls them her bionic teeth).

  4. My favorite Christmas treat is a Dutch pastry called banket. It has a delightful almond filling. So yummy!

  5. I'm literally drooling on my laptop. My favorite Christmas cookies are these shortbread type cookies that my MIL makes. They aren't too sweet and just taste delicious!

  6. Good thing I gassed up the car. Work can do with out me tomorrow. I hope I arrive before Sam eats all the cookies. Especially those last two. And the second and third ones. And all the other other ones.

    1. C'mon over. I think wine goes well with every type of cookie. Maybe Sam will let you borrow his sweatshirt

  8. The cookies are OK but your Daughter... is going to break some heart and have your husband sitting on the porch with a shotgun!!!

  9. Holy cookies! I cannot imagine baking that much simply b/c I suck at baking. But I'd love to have someone bake those for me!

Emma looks amazing--so grown up! And the sweatshirt….no words.

  10. Wow, everything sounds so gourmet and un-ordinary! I've never heard of ANY of those cookies. Sugar cookies with Christmas sprinkles is mainly what you see around this rural working class area of Ohio, though my one brave aunt makes rum balls and the other makes German springerles (beautiful but yucky).

  11. Wow! Power baking! I'll be doing some of that this week. The only bad part is I'm on hamstring rest...how am I going to burn up all those calories?

    1. Well that sucks. But I guess it does leave you more time for baking.

  13. I love variations of s'more cookies and I hadn't seen that one before. I make a killer s'more brownie (graham cracker crust, brownie mix, toasted marshmallow -- it is a multi-step process but so delicious) and have done an easy version of s'more cookies that are just chocolate chip cookies with a marshmallow squished in, half dipped in chocolate.

I used to do the whole days-long baking extravaganza but nowadays just tend to buy a bunch of stuff from the Amish ladies at the farmer's market and divvy it up.

  14. Wow that is a lot of cookies! They look delicious and I am going to have to make some s'more cookies!

  15. My favorite cookies to bake (and give) this time of year is a molasses spice cookie like this one: http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/soft-molasses-spice-cookies. I usually only love chocolate-based desserts, but the texture of these cookies is so fun - crispy on the outside because of the sugar topping but chewy at the same time.

  16. oooo cookies! We need to do that this weekend :)

  17. Brought in ginger cookies to the office today. Described as "I'm drooling", "Insane", "they look professional" and my favorite "You're re-hired" after I was fired last week for bringing in fudge every single day of the week.

  18. my daughters thank you for the cookie pictures and information! :) (and read about Sherry's killer's sentence today. bittersweet...)

  21. Been working on a salted caramel butterscotch cripsy cookie. Our local grocery store sells them 6 for $3.99, which I know is a huge markup, so I can make an entire batch for less than that.
Challenge accepted. First batch was an epic failure, but I will not be broken by these cookies.
I wore braces for 4 years starting at age ten and ending at fourteen. Now, at almost 45 years old, I have to get them again, because back in the day, they only straightened teeth to look ok, but never fixed the problems. I am working on figuring out how I am going to pay for my braces and my son's braces...ugh!

  22. By the posts I have been reading it is safe to assume 75% of the continental US is sick. Maybe your son wants to work in a bird sanctuary or hid in the amazon....you never know!

    1. Yes, this whole country seems sick right now. Go anywhere and everyone is coughing up a lung. My son would be camouflaged really well in a bird sanctuary.

  23. I never had braces but each of the three kids did. My 17 year old just got his off and I can't tell you how grateful he is.

    He looks amazing!

  24. You made a cookie that contains another cookie (oreo peppermint things).....isn't that like cookie canabalism? I also like the roll of toilet paper featured in the first picture!

  25. I've been following your blog for so long that I can see your kids growing up right before my eyes! Emma is so beautiful and she looks so grown up without her braces!
