I came this close (imagine me holding my thumb and index finger about 2 cm apart) to not running today. It was pouring rain and 44 degrees. Wah, Wah. FWP. I was cozy in my house in my PJs, cup of steaming coffee in hand, doing some work. Why go out into the moist (<-hate that word) and chilly universe?
Then I told myself, “Self, you do not have a blog called Shut Up and Be a Pussy When It Is Raining.” (SUABAPWIIR).
I then played that little game where you tell yourself, “Self, if you get out there and after 10 minutes are too miserable to go another step, then come home.” That game always works because with running, once you get going you are only .00001% likely to stop before you meet your goal. Todays goal was 5 miles. Nailed it. And, looked like a movie start while doing it.
Well, maybe a movie star who is perpetually out of work and old with no sense of style. And a very large thumb.
Did you plan to run today? If you did, did you? DID YOU? If not, WHY NOT? If I can run in cold and rain, well…you can get your ass out there too.
Today’s blog post is brought you by new products I am trying/reviewing.
First up. Perfect Bars. I have seen these in the refrigerated section at Costco. I had never experienced a refrigerated protein bar before. The reason they are refrigerated is that they are made with organic honey (as a preservative) and that needs to be refrigerated. They can last for two weeks without being in the fridge, though.
They are gluten free and organic. And, seriously, they are DELICIOUS. The almond butter one is my favorite. I would absolutely consider buying them now…except that they are more than I typically spend per protein bar (they are $2.50 to $3/bar). Given the ingredients, however, I just might consider the splurge. Try ‘em, see what you think.
Second. Louva Shorties!! You know I love my Louva arms sleeves (review here). Well, they sent me these cute shorties. At first I was like, what the hell are these things? A sock with a hole? But then I realized that they are kind of a fingerless glove. If you want them to be a full glove, you can just tuck in your fingers. Then they can turn into a wrist band that you can wipe snot on. I have worn these several times on the chilly mornings, like today. And, MSRP is only $8!
Third…coming up soon, a review of the Mizuno Wave Rider 19s with a giveaway of the same shoe. I think these are completely gorgeous shoe porn. Can’t wait to try them. They smell good too.
GIVEAWAY!
Want to win a pair of Louva Shorties AND a pair of Louva Armsleeves? Enter below. Winner chosen on 10/28. Must be a US address.a Rafflecopter giveaway

My fitted wool hat! It keeps my hair down, stays in place, and doesn't add bulk to the rest of my wardrobe! Win-win-win.
ReplyDeleteI love any arm sleeves
ReplyDeletePerfect Bars sound, well, almost perfect. But I'm not sure why they would require refrigeration because they are made with organic honey. Honey does not go bad. Ever. The Smithsonian Magazine published an interesting explanation of this in a story called, "The Science Behind Honey's Eternal Shelf Life." You can read it here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/the-science-behind-honeys-eternal-shelf-life-1218690/?no-ist
I think the BARS require refrigeration because honey is a weak preservative. The honey certainly doesn't. Interesting fact I learned recently: Mead (fermented honey beverage, similar to wine) stays good after a bottle is opened for at least ten years - probably longer but it hasn't been tested!
DeleteI love my smart wool socks and my hot hands hand warmers tucked in ( my capris to keep my butt warm, not my hands)
ReplyDeleteNo run today. Swam 1.6 K, fast. Next I'm going to suck it up and go to yoga class. Bleah. It isn't as much fun with the new instructor. Would rather run; it's 19 C here today.
ReplyDeleteI love perfect bars! The almond butter is my favorite. I love them before longish runs because they fuel me up without making me too full.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite winter running gear is my Columbia half zip - it has a cool heat shield technology so I don't have to wear a million layers.
Those would be perfect t to try out now that it is getting cooler out.
ReplyDeleteMy fav cold weather gear is my pink nike dry fit ear muffs ( well head band that covers your ears) it even has a hole in the back for ponytails.
ReplyDeleteTotally love the shoe porn btw!!!
I love the shoes!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love my Sugoi Versa jacket - the sleeves come off in one piece but are attached with magnets instead of Velcro or zippers. I've had it for several years and love it for cycling and running.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win Mizunos, but they quit making them in my size! The smallest they make now is a 6 and I wear a 5. FWP.
I would love these!
ReplyDeleteFavorite winter running gear = Brooks Utopia jacket. I seriously need another because I want to wear all the time (apart from just running!)
ReplyDeleteI love my reflective running vest, but I really need a new warm weather jacket!
ReplyDeleteThe mizunos look awesome !
ReplyDeleteLove my Under Armour long sleeve shirt with fleece and thumb holes!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty simple with weather gear - just a hat and gloves and the gloves normally come off once I'm warmed up. But then again it doesn't get super cold where I am. However gloves are a pain while using my iPhone so the shorties sound intriguing.
ReplyDeleteTried every type of glove and my fingers still freeze. I now wear...no, require mittens!
ReplyDeleteFavorite winter running gear: Athleta Polartec tights - they are almost too warm to wear in temps over 20 degrees
ReplyDeleteIt is so hard going out to run when it's raining. I'm OK if I am already running before the rain starts.
I love my running jacket. I think it's Fila. It's the perfect weight.
ReplyDeleteMy earband. Can't run in my ears are cold.
ReplyDeleteI love my asics tights and some awesome wool blend gloves I got at a relay race once. Usually I just end up getting snot on them, but it (probably) washes out.
ReplyDeleteDidn't want to run. Did it anyway. I'm a badass. Neeeeeed new shoes!
ReplyDeleteI love my winter running hats.....but would be lost without my winter tights.
ReplyDeleteI love my Old Navy running tights! I had to do my planned 7 miles on the treadmill tonight - not because of cold (Texas) but it was too late and too dark. And I did it!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFavorite gear? Headband/ear warmer with removable headphones. Toasty and tuneful!
ReplyDeleteI cut the toes off my son's old soccer socks to make arm warmers. Super fancy! Actually I'm trying to channel his young, fast running legs...
ReplyDeleteWhat gets cold on me are my ears, and I can't stand how winter hats feel so haaaaands down my fleece headband that I pull over my ears
ReplyDeleteMy fav cold weather gear is my Buff.
ReplyDeleteLayers work for me. I don't like anything too bulky. I'd rather be a little cold with 3 layers but still sleek than to be nice and toasty in some large uncomfortable deal.
ReplyDeleteMy running plans were altered a bit as I had someone run with me today. I ended up 5 miles short of the daily goal. My kid has been home sick so my afternoon freedom to run has suffered. I might be able to make it up but I won't go crazy.
I love my mizuno breath thermo long sleeve shirt, so light but so warm!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until it's cold enough in AZ to need to wipe my snot on a sleeve! Yay!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather running gear is anything with thumbholes! I have one long sleeve pullover shirt/jacket thingy (super cheap at costco last year), that's very cozy (and have course has the requisite thumbholes).
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather gear is my headband that covers my ears. I'm also addicted to thumb holes!!
ReplyDeletewool socks are my go to winter gear. won't run without them. these shorties look perfect for keeping the wrists warm and minding the gap between the gloves and the long sleeves.
ReplyDeletethis is Judy
DeleteI love a good running jacket on those really cold mornings. Also my gloves... I couldn't live without them
ReplyDeleteI love when it is cold enough to finally wear my fleece hat!
ReplyDeleteEar band is a must!
ReplyDeleteMy UA cold gear vest.
ReplyDeleteear covers and winter tights
ReplyDeleteI bought the arm warmers after your review last year and I love them! I think my FAVORITE piece of cold weather gear is the wind-resistant ear warmer headband thingy though - I HATE when my ears are cold!
ReplyDeleteI did not run today because I a smart. And sore. I ran the Columbus 1/2 marathon on Sunday and am doing the right thing by not exercising. And I am older than you so get off my back.
ReplyDeleteLove the attitude :) It was a great race day in Columbus! A tad chilly, but no complaints on that! I had my first run today after running the half also. I little stiff, but overall not terrible.
DeleteI didn't run today because I came within inches of stepping on a skunk that was scurrying around on the shoulder of the road yesterday morning...AKKK!! During the week I run in the morning and it is still dark out...I have my knuckle lights but apparently wasn't paying attention. I turned around and ran like my life depended on it! Now I'm freaked out and probably suffering from skunk PTSD...what's a girl to do!?!
ReplyDeleteCindy
My favorite cold weather gear is ear warmers. Keep the ears warm and the ear buds in. Win win! Today is a rest day, but I am SO FREAKING EXCITED about hitting the trail tomorrow
ReplyDeleteI love my warm running vest and a good earband!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Midwesterner through and through, but I just moved from SoCal back to the East Coast. I need to get back into cold-weather running! But, one piece of gear that has worked great in both climates is a simple, sweat-wicking long sleeve.
ReplyDeleteI love my hand warmers. I must for 25 degrees and below!
ReplyDeleteGloves! I love having them on when I start and being able to take them off when my body temperature rises!
ReplyDeleteHate cold hands, would love the shorties!
ReplyDeleteAll of that stuff looks awesome! Who cares how those shoes fit... they would match every running outfit I own!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!
My favorite cold weather piece is my Buff! I either use it as a beanie or a balaclava.
ReplyDeleteMy $1 winbreaker from Walmart. I am being serious here.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite running gear is a Buff . Even used it for Kleenex a time or two, !! HA! Hey, a girl has to do what a girl has to do.
ReplyDeleteMy neck gaiter is the best cold weather purchase I've made.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite would be gloves....hate it when my hands are freezing!
ReplyDeleteYes! Ran in the dark this morning....REALLY REALLY wanted to stay in bed! No rain and not TOO cold...only 41.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold running gear is anything with thumb holes. I love thumb hole season!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather gear is my running hat that says Suck It Up Buttercup. That's often what I need to hear in January and etc.
ReplyDeleteI think my balaclava helps the most with blocking wind from ears, face, and down the neck. And sunglasses help with frigid wind in the eyes.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to pick just one piece of cold gear ... I need to be warm, so I'm bundled to the max! Plus, we have wicked wind here on the Eastern Shore, so I try to cover every appendage possible. I do love arm warmers and those shortie gloves. I hope I win!!! Thanks for the opportunity! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove arm sleeves!
ReplyDeleteI love my Saucony running jacket for colder weather! Blocks the wind but still lets out the sweat so I'm not drowning under there. And I ran 3 slow, easy miles this morning because I didn't wanna and I figured slow was better than not at all...plus you need slow days, too!
ReplyDeletehat, mittens, running tights and a neck warmer to pull over my mouth... gets cold here in northern michigan.....
ReplyDeleteI'm new to running. My favorite cold weather gear is the treadmill at the gym. I'm not sure I'll run outside in the winter.
ReplyDeleteI love a warm headband for winter running, tried a neck gator but don't like all the moisture around my mouth from huffing and puffing when I run.
ReplyDeleteDebby
Just last weekend I had to drag out my cold weather running gear that was stashed in the attic!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing (up to this point!) is a pair of running gloves from Target (probably C9) that are the perfect weight and warmth. They rarely get too warm, and are really comfortable.
for the real February cold, I love my fleece-lined running tights by asics.
ReplyDeleteHand warmers...like a little heater for my hands.
ReplyDeleteArm warmers are the best! Pick me!
ReplyDeleteWant to try those bars too! Favorite cold weather gear is my pink under armour beanie! Unfortunately in So Cal I don't get to use cold weather gear very often!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold winter gear has to be hand warmers. I can dress pretty comfortably but my hands always freeze, so those save me.
ReplyDeletemy favorite winter gear, I love LOVE my fleece hat with a hole in the back for a pony tail... keeping hair out of my face and my head cozy warm ;)
ReplyDeleteHa! I went through the same debate this morning and bailed big time! I did run yesterday in the cold rain but was meeting friends so that made me go. Today, by myself, I thought of being cold again and decided it wasn't going to enrich my life. Work in front of the computer won out.
ReplyDeleteGotta admit I did the same thing today...
DeleteI love my UA fleece lined running pants. They are so cozy!
ReplyDeleteI am a cold weather wuss so I own pretty much every piece of cold weather gear I can get my hands on. I do love my Under Armor tights but wish they had a zip pocket. I have a C9 jacket I picked up for like $25 that keeps me nice and toasty, and has pockets, and has a collar I can flip up or down. I have hats and ear bands in a variety of warmths and a couple of Buffs. If it gets too cold my favorite cold weather gear becomes the treadmill. =)
ReplyDeleteI love all of my Mizuno Breath Thermo gear. It enabled me to train for a marathon through -15 degree days last winter!
ReplyDeleteYES PERFECT BARS. Oh man the almond butter bar is incredible. For my birthday, I was given two boxes I was so obsessed... I love them.
ReplyDeleteI run later today! I think it's only 3 miles though, I'm pacing the run/walk group for my run club...

Love arm warmers! The perfect solution when I am a person who may start a little chilly but am absolutely roasting within a short time. Easy to pull up or down or tuck into shorts/tights. Much easier than carrying a shirt or trying to stash something and hoping it's still there when you come back around. The shorties would be awesome for late fall as it's really only my hands that start out cold.
ReplyDeleteI got a brooks head band that has fleece inside that keeps my ears toasty warm! One of my winter favorites for sure.
ReplyDeleteFavorite cold weather item - gloves! My fingers go completely numb without them:(
ReplyDeleteI am learning to use arm warmers more instead of another layer, much easier to take off and carry when I warm up. I pull them over my hands at first too.
ReplyDeleteFavorite cold weather running piece are my Nathans pink reflective gloves. They are perfect for multiple temps.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold running piece is a C9 jacket from Target. It's light but very warm!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of cold weather gear is my base layer shirt with thumb holes. It keeps me warm and toasty
ReplyDeleteCheck out this experience of a run almost missed by rain... no excuses, right?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.asimplerunner.com/running-in-the-rain-is-highly-recommended/
My ear warmers.
ReplyDeleteI love my neck gaiter.
ReplyDeleteI love my ear warmer in the winter! My ears get cold and make my jaw ache any time it's under 50, so indeed it and love it!
ReplyDeleteMy hoodie!
ReplyDeleteI ran today - gorgeous midwest Autumn day.
ReplyDeleteFav winter item - fleece hat from my daughter's university.
My new fav protein bars are Quest Bars. O.M.G. but I try these, too.
I did not run today. No more running until the doc says yes, which is probably going to be several more months, just in time for the seriously cold weather :(
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold-weather running gear is duct tape. I'm often running in snow/slush and I'm too cheap to buy a separate pair of waterproof ($180!) shoes, so I just slap some duct tape on my normal shoes.
I would totally buy a butt-warmer if they made one, though, 'cause the cheeks always freeze :O
I love my arm warmers and neck gaiter, which I've been using since Sept.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say a jacket of some sort - shaunie
ReplyDeleteI like my arm warmers when it's cooler, but then gets warmer throughout my run. However, I do like a zip up jacket when I know it's going to be continuously chilly during my run.
ReplyDeleteLiving in S TX, I haven't worn arm warmers before. However, after reading so many glowing reports in these comments, I apparently live under a rock and need to try them out.
ReplyDeletegloves for sure
ReplyDeleteI live in SoCal where it isn't quite cold enough for a sweater but too cold for nothing. This would be awesome mainly for the snot factor...cause allergies.
ReplyDeleteLove my Icebreaker wool long sleeve t's and hat. Its getting to be freezing at nights here which makes for cold runs in the a.m. Gotta start wearing pants :(
ReplyDeletegloves to wipe my nose with.
ReplyDeleteThe shorties would be perfect on semi cold/drippy nose days!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is my neck koozie<----that's what I call it, I don't really know the exact name. It's warm and keeps the frigid cold from going down my neck. I can pull it up if my face gets cold or just leave it around my neck. It's my cold running security blanket!
ReplyDeletepool run today b/c I'm recovering from plantar fasciitis... and my favorite cold running gear are fleece gloves and a beanie! :)
ReplyDeleteI love my Fila running jacket from Kohl's. Who doesn't love thumb holes?
ReplyDeleteI have an awesome Pearl Izumi jacket that is so wind proof and lightweight that I got at the thrift store last year. Such a life saver because where i live, its so freakin windy!
ReplyDeleteThrift store finds are the BEST!
DeleteI have an ear warmer that I got at the (canceled) New York Marathon. It reminds me of the awesome trip I had in spite of the marathon being canceled!
ReplyDeleteMy fave piece of cold weather running gear is a white quilted ASICS jacket that I bought at my LRS last year. I love it!
ReplyDeleteOh! Would so love to win these!! :)
ReplyDeleteHot hands are nice and chunky hats too. I have to keep my ears warm.
ReplyDeleteMy toastly warm ear bands!
ReplyDeleteBy far, my most favorite thing are the Nike Pro Hyperwarm 3.0 running tights...I could wear them all day long!
ReplyDeleteThe dreadmill! Honestly, though, I have never been able to run outside all winter so this year we'll see how far into the freeze I can make it. I have breathing problems in the cold so the treadmill is my best buddy until Michigan thaws!
ReplyDeleteWool socks!
ReplyDeletePurchased some new pants/leggings with fleece inside, so I'm hoping this will help me want to go outside more when it's cold outside!
ReplyDeleteThose shorties would have been awesome today.
ReplyDeleteSo far, my favorite cold weather gear are a headband that covers my ears, and my brooks running tights with ripped knees from falling on the ice. But those shorties are looking pretty sweet.
ReplyDeleteFuzzy jacket
ReplyDeleteWhen it's COLD outside but this WORKING MAMA OF 3 want OUT, i GRAB MY FLEECE.. ear muffs, gloves, tights, and Betty Boop sweatshirt! Nicole Bowers, nicole (at) nicoleschoice (dotcom)
ReplyDeleteI have no current fave cold weather gear...must mean a trip to my awesome local running store is needed. I would love those shoes, I hear they are good for bunions(wide feet) and mine are outta the park gnarly.
ReplyDeleteI love warm fuzzy socks
ReplyDeleteI live in California, so we don't have winter! Or maybe I'll say that my favorite winter gear is a poncho, since winter is (supposed to be) rainy.
ReplyDeleteMy puma sweat pants are so comfortable in the cooler weather.
ReplyDeleteI love a buff. I can wear it so many ways, and usually wear two-on my head and on my neck.
ReplyDeleteI could really use a pair of Shorties doing race data entry on cold mornings, hint hint...
My favorite piece of cold weather gear is my running jacket. I love it!
ReplyDeleteI would say gloves but they start to annoy me. I would say a hat but it starts to annoy me. So I will have to go with long pants and shirts. Glad I don't live in a real cold place.
ReplyDeleteI love my fleece pink Under Armour half zip. I bought it during an online sale years ago, so I'd never tried it on, but I love the way it fits and it's so comfortable! I almost always wear it as one of my cold weather layers.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather running wear is my knit hat that has a hole for my pony tail. It keeps my ears warm and my pony tail doesn't mess with it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather running gear is all of my under armor clothes. Keeps me warm yet I can still breathe and feel good.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, ear warmers!
ReplyDeleteI love my Brooks thermal running tights. They are super cozy.
ReplyDeleteI half zips. They make me feel super studly.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cold weather gear is my Under Armour base layer and a headband. Keeps me warm in Wisconsin winters. I do need to try some sleeves, though, for fall and spring.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of cold weather gear is my headband, keeps my ears really warm. (I live in NorCal, so it doesn't get SUPER cold).
ReplyDeleteI have a smartwool beanie that keeps my head nice and toasty!
ReplyDeletemy cold weather gear would have to be my shoes/sneakers and my light weight cold/jacket comfy and warm
ReplyDeleteCW-X tights...usually it gets too hot for me to wear around here (TX) so I love when the weather's chilly enough to use them.
ReplyDeleteI love my ski cap.
ReplyDeleteA nice crocheted hat and scarf made with reflective yarn.
ReplyDeleteI love my fuzzy warm scarf. I have no idea what it is made of, but it sure helps me keep warm.
ReplyDeletetreasuretoday@aol.com Pam C.
My bright orange Buff isn't too thick but keeps the wind off my ears.
ReplyDeleteMy hoodie is my fave cold weather running gear
ReplyDeleteI cant run without food warmers!
ReplyDeleteLove love arm sleeves :)
ReplyDeleteA lightweight jacket and some thick socks are always perfect for cold weather exercise.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of outdoor gear is my beloved heavy knit hat. It keeps me pretty warm.
ReplyDeletemy favorite piece of outdoor gear is my down coat.thankyou, ken pohl19@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of cold weather running gear is my Old Navy hat :)
ReplyDeleteThank You for the chance
Fiona N
My hoodie.
ReplyDeleteInfrared werewolf jacket
ReplyDeleteI love my light weight scarves to keep my neck warm when I'm outside.
ReplyDeleteSherri J
Hand warmer inside of super thick mittens are the only things that keep my hands warm when temps drop below 15 F. And a balaclava is necessary to keep my cheeks from freezing.
ReplyDeleteMy fleece headband that doubles as ear warmers!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't go without my Under Armor!
