My 11 Tips to Having the Most Kick-Ass Long Run

Today I ran 11 miles in 1:38 (8:55 pace). It was pretty damn swell, so I thought I’d give you some tips on how to make your long run swell as well (rhyme!).

1. Drink at least 2 cups of coffee because it boosts performance (or so “they” say – I’m just going with it because I happen to love coffee more than chocolate, but not more than wine). From Runner’s World:

2. Make every effort to poop before you go. If you don’t, there is a 97.3% chance you will have to go on the run or you will be uncomfortable and gassy the whole way. Food for thought: I could only get out rabbit pellets before I went. NG (Not Good).

3. Always plan your route ahead of time, down to the .00001 of a mile. I used Map My Run. Today I thought I would try this route, but then  I got too excited (TWSS).

4. Stop to take pictures of things like pigs and wonder how the hell these sweet, smelly bastards cause cancer (think: bacon).  I think the there is probably not much that smells worse than a pig’s butthole – bacon farts?

5. Also notice Halloween things along the way and photograph the best decoration you see. Then post it on Pinterest and say you made it from scratch.

6. Ask your husband to take a staged picture of you running because you will have to post on Instagram today because that is what runners do. Why else would I run (JK).

7. Never forget to notice the beauty around you unless you live in a really ugly place. In that case I’m sorry. Why do you live there?

8. Try to stop singing the same song in your head for 11 miles. It’s usually the last song you heard on the radio before you started your run. Today I was channeling my inner Taylor Swift: “Say you'll remember me standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe. Red lips and rosy cheeks. Say you'll see me again. Even if it's just in your wildest dreams.”

9. Stop and eat a chocolate rage GU because it tastes like a Tootsie Roll and in honor of Halloween you are thinking about Tootsie Rolls all day even though you don’t really like them that much.

10. Try to throw in a fast mile around mile 9 just to see if you can do it. Realize that this makes you much more tired and maybe you should never do that again.

11. Finish kind of strong, but not really. Get a text that is better than sex:

That’s a long run wrap-up! Time to lay around the rest of the day because I already did something productive and no need to over exert myself.

I suppose I can get up off the couch to give out candy. This year we went with the full sized candy bars. You can see how desperately I want kids that I don’t know to like me.

Did you do a long run this week? How far?

What’s your favorite candy? What are you handing out this year? I am not a huge candy lover. But, I’d say Reese's are probably my fave.

  1. I don't think Taylor Swift would help me on a long run. Worse than a pig's butthole, in my opinion....

  2. We didn't run long but we did run a race in the memory of my friend's late 6 year old son. He loved superheroes so everyone dressed in costume. My husband and I went as the wonder twins. For the record, no self respecting 47 year old wears lavender lycra, but we did. Thank God for well placed race bibs.

Did you know that many of the younger runners had no clue who the Wonder Twins were? Seriously people. Wonder Twin powers activate! Form of an Eagle! Form of a bucket!

  3. #1 and #2 (literally). But especially #8! I thought it was only me. What's even worse it that it is never the ENTIRE song...just one little part over and over on a loop.

    1. Exactly. It's kind of horrible.Especially when you don't really even like the song.

  5. You just reminded my that I hadn't posted my instagram picture from today's 10 miler so I did that and now I'm back. We also buy the full sized bars from Costco...but we had almost no kids come by so we have way too much candy in the house now.

  6. #1 & #2 for sure -- I don't leave home without them. Had a kick ass 9.5 miler myself today, but didn't utilize all of your tips. I always think of taking a pic at some point, but that's usually after my phone is strapped to my arm and earbuds are in my ears. So I just annoy my FB friends with run summaries instead of instagram photos.

  7. Did my final long run of 8 miles this morning. Canyon City Marathon, I'm coming for you!

We didn't hand out any candy. The last time I tried that, we had less than 10 trick or treaters and way too much candy left over. We're the folks that keep their light off. I don't think anyone was too upset - no eggs on our house or trash in our lawn this morning.

  8. I wish I had some nice scenery around me...it would make my long runs nicer! Instead I'm always running past 7-11s and powerlines.

  9. This morning, I had to make a stop at a pit toilet and thought of you. No snakes, but lots of lizards.

  10. I did a 10 miler this week for my long run. Just getting back into training after TC Full. Next full is in Baton Rouge/January. My fave candy is anything that has PB in it. It's a tie between Reese's and PB M&M's. Thankfully( or not) I have a ton of candy leftover.

  13. Ran 4.7 miles today and wanted to do 5. Instead headed out for breakfast because I was starving and not really training for anything anyway. Snickers are my downfall...

  14. I listened to that Taylor Swift song this morning too!!! Just curious-have you chosen a race or another goal? or still just enjoying having running freedom?

    1. Funny you should ask...I made a dream list of races for next year including my first 50 miler. Have not signed up for anything yet, though. Lots of ideas.

  15. So funny...but yes, I always make sure I follow step #2 (I'm sure this pun was intended!) before my long run. It really makes a difference. And I try to find as scenic a route as possible!

  16. Ran my very first half marathon-the Halloween Halfathon at Ft.DeSoto in St.Pete with my best friend. It's also the anniversary of her Dad's passing, so it was extra important. Instead of handing out candy, we went to Outback!

  17. Wow! That brings back some great running memories from the year 1976-1977 when I lived on Coquina Key in St. Petersburg and often trained in Fort De Soto Park. It was magnificent, weather (heat) permitting. I also loved running out-and-backs from Pass a Grille Beach, many times barefoot on the firm and flat sand. During the summer, you couldn't really cool off with a quick dip in the Gulf because the water was just too warm! Do they still have organized beach races in St. Pete?

  19. I love coffee and always hesitate to drink if before a long run. I always try to toughen it out and try not to consume any till after I completed the race. After reading your blog I know want know try it out and see if it improves my performance.
