Something Very Alarming You Need to Know About

Guys. I just had the most amazing massage. For the past few years I've gotten massages that were mostly torture to treat or release some body part that was hurting due to running. Not for relaxation.

For Mother's Day Sam gave me a gift certificate to Spavia, a new spa in town. I love how they asked me what fragrance lotion to use (white ginger lily), what music I wanted (soft new-agey stuff) and best of all how much conversation I did or did not want during the massage (little to none). I am not a huge conversationalist when I get a massage unless it's feedback about my body, so this was a nice thing to take into account. Two things the massage therapist commented on:

  • "Your left IT Band is so tight it is alarming." Wow no one has ever called my IT band "alarming." Alarming is usually when someone's house is on fire or when you find out the mailman is your dad or you crapped your pants and you are not a baby.
  • "You are lucky you can wear pointy shoes." WHAT? Oh, she means because of this situation.
Can someone pay for me to get a manicure? Or just a toe transplant?

My toes never cease to amaze people or myself. Freaky freak finger-like toes.

What's new with me? Here are a few things.

1. I am trying this.

I have little to no upper body strength. Last week I could barely do 5 push ups. Today I did 12.

2. As I get older I do not want to get into ruts. That's why I keep signing up for stupid ass and crazy races. That is also why I keep trying new recipes. This one was a winner. My daughter, Emma is not only a vegetarian (well technically pescatarian), but she is also picky. Her response to this meal, "Mom. That was a 10 on the scale." Sometimes I do things right.

3. Because I am putting in the miles these days and most of them should involve climbing, I've been heading out to the trails a lot more than usual. This means that I am running by myself on trails some. I haven't really done this before - mostly for safety reasons - i.e., wild animals, wild people or falling. So, I've been going at times when I think more people will be out there and I've been running with my mace, just in case.

Pictures from today's 8 miler, which covered 1,500 feet of climbing:

My attempt to get a timer shot. You get an up close of my leg and the crotch of my shorts instead

Another fail at a timer shot

Happy runner. Crooked sunglasses.

4. I'm bored with TV. I have turned to Netflix and House of Cards. Political shows tend to confuse me because I can be kind of dumb, but I am doing my best to stick with the plot. It's good.

5. I signed up for the Leadville Marathon. I almost didn't because it looked too easy.

You might remember I did the Heavy Half (15 miles) last year (race report HERE). There was suffering, but there was also fantastic scenery and beer at the end, so that made it okay.

6. I was reminded this weekend of how creepy Raynauds disorder can make my hands look after I run in the cold:

When was your last massage?

What are you watching on Netflix now?

Newest recipe you've tried and liked?

How many push ups can you do? Prove it.

  1. Did you get a happy ending after your massage? That's really the most important thing?

  5. OH my gosh I have Raynauds and it's ridiculously unhappy. My son has it AWFUL. I wish there was an answer. That child will freaking lose his fingers. :( probably. Or not because I don't know if that's a thing but it's scary weird and his fingers hurt a lot. I still think you're nuts for the Leadville Marathon but I will cheer you on from the internet.

  6. Last Tuesday. My massage therapist is the best, even if it takes a rest day, and 1 run and 1 swim to be feeling back in the groove.
    Netflix?
    Recipe?
On average, about 2. For a while I could reliable do 10 slow ones, or a 2 minute plank, but I think I overdid it and I'm afraid to try again.
Great photos. Especially the timer ones. A new art form.

  7. My last massage was more like a massacre. Totally my fault. She asked me similar questions...but also if I wanted deep or gentle. the runner in me wanted her to work out all the kinks and knots...so I told her "I know I'm small, but I can take very deep pressure so give it all you've got!" MISTAKE!!!!! I was sweating, holding onto the table for dear life and had to remind myself to breathe. I walked out bleary eyed and feeling like I'd been punched, had fallen from a tree and then run over by a train. And it wasn't a gift...so when I paid the bill all I could think was "I actually paid someone to do this to me!?!?"
The moral.....be careful what you ask for!!!

    Netflix: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

    1. That is hilarious. I literally LOL'd. Also, I second Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It's even weirder this second season compared to the first - and that's saying a lot.

  8. My last massage was from a lady that worked with the Navy SEAL's. She was at least 6 ft tall, super strong and was used to her customers requesting "give it all you got" kind of pressure. My calves hurt for days!!!! It hurt to walk!! I almost thought I was injured!!! And I paid for it!!!!
I am the worst when it comes to new recipes, my 12 y.o. son is very picky. I did try the potatoes au gratin from the Pioneer Woman's site and they were great!
I gave up on push up after I tore up my wrist pushing that baby boy in the jogging stroller and making myself do 30 push ups because I read that Leann Rhimes could do 30 and she looked weak and tiny and of course I was stronger than her, haha, sucker. Had to have surgery, in a cast for 6 weeks and off work for 16 weeks so no goddamn push ups anymore for me.

  9. I love Netflix questions as much as "What good book do you recommend?"
Loved Nurse Jackie, Orange is the New Black and Dexter.
Can I drop to my knees?

  10. I hate to complain about a massage because it's sort of like sex. Even when it's bad, it's pretty good. But I get them so regularly now that I've had my share of bad ones. So much so that I cancelled my Massage Envy membership. Well, not cancelled but froze my account anyway. Always good to keep my options open. I find so few therapist who understand runners. And this gets to the point in your story about being told about a muscle so bad, it's alarming. What part of me telling them I'm a runner don't they understand? I can tell them I just ran a marathon and they'll chide me for not stretching more. I warn them about my sensitive toenails but they scream more at seeing them than I do at them being touched. I don't know. I'm about done with massages.

  11. i'm 62 and can do over 20 in a row after a warmup of 10-12...How do I post a video to your site to prove it? (I do at least 50 pushups every other day-good for swimming).

    2. I have a flip phone and it doesn't take videos....so you will just have to take my word for it! :-) And that girl doing the plank/pushups should keep her feet closer together and he arms needs to be further in line with her chest for a proper pushup

    3. I know. I thought the same thing. I've never seen a pushup done that way before

  12. My 10 year old son is also a pescetarian, which means the rest of us also are, by default. I just finished Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, which is too heavy for my 10 year old, but could be interesting (traumatizing?) for Emma. Has she read it yet?

  13. Let's see, last massage was two days ago, gotta love living close to a massage school. The students are always intrigued by the damage I put myself through.

Miss fishers Murder Mysteries was my last Netflix obsession. For a girl that lives in running clothes I have strange obsession with clothes and hers are amazing.

Probably 30 plus push-ups (thank you Beach Body Hammer and Chisel) if challenged but my first Spartan is tomorrow so no proof because I am resting.

Oh and it's my 35th birthday ☺️ No push-ups allowed on my birthday

  14. I used to run with a little mace thing too, and a chemist friend asked me if I had ever tried to use it. I said, "no" and he suggested I try it and see how it works. He had a convenient glove box handy so I tried mine there. I looked like a toddler taking a whiz. Not impressive at all. I was expecting a big whoozh spray that would disable an angry beast. Not happening. So you might want to try yours out and see if it is a big disappointment. Maybe I just had a dud, but I no longer carry it. It would be useless.

  15. I've only ever had one massage. It was one of those free post marathon massages. I thought it would feel nice. I couldn't have been more wrong.

I just finished watching season 1 of Schitt's Creek on Netflix. It's a Canadian show so not sure if it's on US Netflix. I also have Death in Paradise and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt on the go. I agree with the previous poster who suggested Broadchurch. The first season (or series, as the Brits say) is the only time I've ever binge watched a show. Call the Midwife is good too.

The last recipe I tried and like was this:
    http://www.skinnytaste.com/pickle-brined-baked-chicken-tenders/
    We call them chickles.

I did 30 push ups earlier tonight. You'll have to take my word for it. In January I could barely do 10. I have no idea what my form is like. I try to do them on my non-running days but I forgot yesterday.

  17. Currently injured (sacral stress fracture diagnosed 2 weeks before my first marathon of the race season. BOO!) So I am spending an inordinate amount of time watching Netflix.... Current obsession is Gilmore Girls- I never watched it when it was on tv, but now that I heard they are filming a reunion series I decided to check it out. Serious feel-good guilty pleasure!!

  18. I had a torture massage last week, I'm trying to finish OITNB before the next season starts, and I can do 51 push-ups! That is what my number was for my last fitness test at work! Boy push-ups, no knees on the ground. If you do them most days, you get strong quick, and can avoid having old lady bat wings for arms💪

  19. When was your last massage? - about a month ago and need to schedule another
What are you watching on Netflix now? American Odyssey - SO intense!
Newest recipe you've tried and liked? Blackened walleye (just caught), Amazing!
How many push ups can you do? Prove it. None, shoulder injury that prevents them.
