This Word Can Change Your Life

Today I was listening to a podcast - Tim Ferriss (one of my most favorite authors and pod casters, and I dare say I would definitely love him in person) was interviewing Phil Keoghan, host of the Amazing Race. At first I was like...meh...not too exciting, but I knew if Tim had that guy on the show - well, he must be something. Because Tim only has people who are influencers - people who can change the way we think and act for the better.

And Phil is something. Damn. Go listen right now.

I haven't quite finished the episode, but one of my take-aways is in regard to optimism.

Optimism. Do you have it?

Phil talks about how when raising his daughter, one rule was that one could never say, "I can't." One could re-frame it to something else like, "I might be challenged by..." but saying flat out "I can't" was a no-no.

He then goes on to say that his motto is, "Don't think about what you don't have and what you can't do. Think about what you DO have and what you CAN do." This is true optimism in my opinion. When faced with adversity, you problem solve and fight your way out instead of giving in to the negativity.

Needless to say, I was applying this to running in my mind the whole time. MIND and mentality and attitude are everything. When running the Paris Marathon, I simply gave up. That giving up was 100% my mind and not my body. Mind has power. And the focus on what we can do and what we have is everything.

So, as I head into a half marathon in Utah this weekend (Utah Valley Half, anyone?), I'll be remembering to stay optimistic. To train my mind to have confidence and hope for a successful outcome.

Because "can't" is not a word I want in my vocabulary. Or my daughter's.

    1. My husband is back!!! I had a problem with my husband 8 months ago,which lead to us apart.   3. I'm usually the glass is half full type of person but I do succumb to the glass is half empty as well. Your post is timely in that I am running the Yellowstone half this weekend and I was worrying that I won't be able to run at this altitude. I'm just going to SUAR and enjoy it.

  4. I'm definitely more of an optimist. I read a mommy blogger who teaches her kids to say, "I can't...YET." It makes such a big difference. My kids are a mixed beg (some naturally optimistic, some not), so I try to work with what I've got (you CAN learn optimism).

    PS - Those random spam comments crack me UP.

    1. I'll borrow that line for my kids too! I also like "This is hard but you can do hard things." It gives them confidence. And tells them that just because it is hard, that doesn't mean its impossible.

  6. I have to fight to be an optimist. If I can't be positive about an event overall, I chant, "Run the mile you're in" over and over. It reminds me to focus here and now, rather than borrowing trouble from the miles to come. I went to a special needs camp with my kiddo and jumped into the glacial lake there as a Polar Plunge challenge. I ended up jumping in six times to earn credits with the kids, and they all asked me HOW. I told them if we never do hard things, we never find out the limits of what we can do - also the sauna would be that much better after being really cold!

  8. Love this. I just read The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon and if you want a quick read on how staying positive really affect you and the people around you then you would love this book as much as I did. And I'm always an optimist. It drives the Hubs CRAZY... :)

  9. Hopeless optimist here. My optimism was confirmed last year. I had an undiagnosed arthritic condition. When I complained of back pain, I was prescribed PT which I faithfully attended and which did absolutely nothing to quell my symptoms. My husband would ask, "is it helping?" and I would always say, "yeah, I think so, I think it is a bit better today" but really, it was the same. I just always tried to look for the positive that I believed I was slightly improving when I wasn't. Four months later, I got the correct dx, got the right med, and I'm training for my 16th marathon. Onward we go!

  10. I'll be there! I'm flying out Friday from Denver and flying back Sunday--all by myself. It's my first time traveling to a marathon by myself, and I've definitely had to focus on the good stuff(?) of doing it all on my own without my husband as a support crew. I've also had some last-minute challenges (hamstring strain on Tuesday) but I've decided to just have fun and leave doubt about my abilities behind here in Denver.

    While I'm usually more of a realist, I do try to find the positive in most things. With my first marathon coming up next week, I've really been focusing on the positive, though. It will be awesome, I will surprise myself, and I will have fun :-)

  13. I have a whole new attitude these days. It's all about what I can do. The amazing thing is that there is such a big difference when I run now--maybe I'm just being more realistic about it, but it's a lot more fun!

  17. Hey, We were in the same wave of the Bolder Boulder. I'm surprised I didn't see you! Ha! I tried so hard to pose for the photographers but they only caught my grimace each time. I still have optimism that one day I'll have a running photo that captures the fun I feel on the inside.

  18. I was definitely born with the optimistic gene. My mom raised my siblings and I with the 'Count Your Blessings' motto, and I believe to this day that gratefulness makes for a happy life.
