Come Ride With Me…

If you’re in the Denver/Boulder/Longmont area (and even if you’re not but you want to fly in)– I hope you will think about signing up for the Venus de Miles coming this September (don’t say I didn’t give you enough notice).

This is a local bike event that starts and stops in my town of Longmont every year. Here’s why this is a good event for you:

  • It’s all women. This should mean no hairy backs, less testosterone and porta potties without pee on the seat.  (But I will admit sometimes women will surprise you with hair. My back is not hairy, but you should see my pits).
  • You have your choice of distances – 33 miles, 67 miles or 100 miles. I am doing the century ride just for the hell of it and because I guess I need to be able to ride that far if I am going to do an Ironman a month later. Yikes. Did I just say that? Pinch me.
  • It’s for a great cause, supporting the Greenhouse Scholars. This group provides personal and financial support to high-performing, under-resourced college students.
  • The post race festival is not your run of the mill bagels and bottles of water. Enjoy mini-facials (but only if you have a very small face), massages and acupuncture. There will also be a gourmet lunch (I’ll be lucky if I’m there in time for dinner let alone lunch, but maybe that will make me go faster), and the bestest (<if that’s not a word it should be. That is how I referred to all of my friends in the 7th grade) part of all enjoy wine, mojitos and cosmos or beer from Left Hand Brewery. This is all included in your registration price!!!
  • I am riding it and would like some company (<self serving part of why you should sign up).

I think it’s going to be a blast. September is my favorite weather month in Colorado because it is usually crisp and cool in the mornings and warm and sunny throughout the day (watch it be snowing and 25 degrees. You can punch me in the face then).

This course promises lots of great scenery (these guys tried to sneak in, but they were too hairy. There is NOTHING sexier than a man in a kilt with a hairy belly button. I wonder if he has anything on under that kilt? You’re not supposed to):

If you are looking for not just a physical challenge, but an entire experience gather your friends and sign up. I’ll see you there. Oh, and use the code “bccobeth” at registration and you will get $5 off. Register HERE or by clicking on the tab in my sidebar.

Have you ever done a long distance bike ride event (not including tris)? Yes. Believe it or not, when I was 10, I did my first 25 mile fundraiser ride (this was my pre-pubescent Ironman training). Back in those days, the language used was very different. It was called “Ride a Bike for the Retarded” (<makes me wince to type that, but that’s what it was called), and I raised quite a bit of money for the cause. I did my one and only century ride about 20 years ago. I also did Ride the Rockies and the MS 150.

  1. Congrats on your Ironman sponsorship! My sister is doing an Ironman this fall, too, and I am in awe of the amount of training she is putting in! Sounds like you're going to be busy!!!

  2. Bet that will be a beautiful ride!! I hope to get back out to Colorado some day! Regarding long rides... I did the Horrible Hundred in Clermont, Florida last November. Riding in Florida is typically VERY flat. The Horrible Hundred is a century of hills! It really was HORRIBLE! But it was great! :) I think I'll go with the Happy Hundred in Lakeland this year! lol

  3. I've done the MS 150 several years in a row in New Bern, NC. Probably the best MS branch around. I have yet to be brave enough to do a century ride but I have done the 75's, 50's and a smattering of the others. I haven't been brave enough to do anything other than a sprint tri. Have my first one in 4 years this sunday. Oy!

  5. Soo...for riding 100 miles, please tell me you get more than one beer, glass of wine or drink of choice? You should get at least two. lol.
Anywho, that ride sounds awesome. It is a great way to train for your Ironman. An Ironman is on my bucket list!

    1. It should be at least a drink for every 25 miles, amirite?

    2. I agree. At least one cosmo, one mojito and a few beers, right?

    3. That sounds about right. I'll need a ride home from Longmont, though....

  6. That's not really a kilt. It's a naughty schoolgirl skirt. And that's why he has the blonde pigtail braids. And I'm sure he has a silk g-string on underneath if his costume is authentic.

I rode my bike about 20 miles once just for fun...which it wasn't really. Hope you have more fun than I would.

    1. Good catch on the kilt vs. the naughty school girl skirt. You are so right!

  7. I’m glad you said that about September as I’m planning my trip to Steamboat Springs during that time period, and you just reminded me to email by brother about dates. Also, I was wondering if you’ve figured out where you’re going to put the Iron Man logo tattoo after you kick that race’s ass? I’m not sure, but judging by how many of them I’ve seen, I think you’re required to mark yourself after completing one of those…haha. Good Luck. Happy Training.

  8. I'm not sure what it is, but you always make me laugh out loud! "Only if you have a very small face" HA!

I don't ride. I probably need a bike to do that. I've been thinking about starting, though. I get scared by the cyclist in my neighborhood on a regular basis while I'm out for my long runs, seems only fair to pay it forward. At least you never forget how to ride, right?

  9. I rode Venus in 2009 and I was one of the last people in, after deciding that riding all the way up the canyon sounded like a good idea. Even though everyone else made it in well before me, there were still people on the course cheering for us. When the final final ladies came in shortly behind me, you would have thought the president showed up- that's how loud the staff cheered. Such a wonderfully supportive group.

  12. Sounds like a great time! I'd love to join you except that I'm already registered to run a half-marathon that weekend. I'll put it on my radar for next year though.

  13. My stupid computer at work won't let me subscribe. I am 52 years old and two weeks ago my Hubby and I rode 68 miles (100K) in the Florida heat in the "Tallahassee Ride for Hope". It was hell. I finished but it was awful!

  16. You make any activity with you sound like fun. How many mountains are in this century??

I've done the Back Roads half-century. Mostly flat, amazingly scenic ride through the bucolic Virginia countryside. Going back this year (also in September) to do the full. Or the Metric. I'm torn.
