How Many Calories Does Sex Burn?

Please tell me I’m not the only one who has kids who take the ugliest pictures possible of you without you knowing, then text them to you?

I must be very comfortable with you all to share such a heinous picture of myself. It makes me cringe to think that this is what I look like every time I am glancing at my phone (505 times per day).

I did not run today, I went to spin class. I realize it is nice enough to ride outside now (and I did do that yesterday morning), but I LOVE this spin class because the teacher is 50+ years old, owns a travel adventure company and is so cool and hip and full of energy that I just like to see her every week. Maybe I just want to BE her. I bet she never looks like I do when she is checking her phone.

After spin, I went to the eye doctor for all of the eyes issues I’ve been having (itching, redness, constant look of smoking marijuana). Turns out I’m probably allergic to Heidi. Who could be allergic to this lump of love and hair?

Sam is trying to photo bomb the picture of Heidi doing her leg lifts above. He needs more experience to be a professional photo bomber like this person:

Speaking of allergies, I had them TERRIBLE as a kid. Mostly ragweed. My mom even had to give me injections at home. When I was tested, they found I was allergic to dogs and cats too. But, we always had dogs and cats anyway because we liked them and what’s a little sneezing? The eye doctor told me today that your body can actually adjust over time to the allergy. It’s almost as if you build up immunities. So, she said don’t get rid of the dog, which is good news because my family would probably rather have ME move out than Heidi.

I know I am all over the place today but here’s another subject - while I was at the doctor’s office, I saw this interesting snippet in Health Magazine about spin classes. It said something like people don’t lose weight doing really high intensity workouts like spin because they overestimate how many calories they burn and eat too much later in the day. I am not trying to lose weight, but thought that was kind of interesting. Below is a chart of the number of calories burned certain activities.

image

Who knew eating burned calories? Win-win! Although if you’re eating for an hour straight…well, that might be a problem. Why isn’t sex on there?

I think the trick is to remember that even if you were laying on the couch, you would be burning a certain number of calories – so you should subtract that amount from the amounts above (so if you burn 85 calories per an hour sitting on your butt and you burn 700 calories an hour running, the excess calories burned is 615 or something like that – I’m no nutritionist or Jillian Michaels).

Are you a calorie counter? No. I just try to stay active and not over do the junk food. Wine is perfectly fine.

Have any allergies to food, pets, etc? Ever had to get rid of a pet due to allergies? Not yet.

  1. How could you possibly be allergic to something so adorable? Nevah! At first I thought you meant that is how you looked when googling "how many calories do you burn during sex?" That's what my face would look like! ;) Maybe you should stop smoking marijuana and your eyes will clear up. LOL...I'm crackin' myself up today. Sheesh.

  2. I caught my girls hunched over their iPod the other day, giggling and muttering something about me looking "evil." Turns out there was an entire series of secret snapshots on there, non of them flattering (and yes, I did look a little evil in some of them).

Glad to hear Heidi can stay! My daughter is allergic to cats and will get quite reactive when we visit friends or family with cats, but she is totally symptom free living with our seriously hairy feline friend. Funny that she isn't immune to all cats, just ours...

    1. That is something else my doctor said. That it's possible to get used to your specific pet and have few problems, but get around other pets and be really allergic.

    2. My boyfriend is allergic to cats and dogs, but he has developed an immunity to my feline companion aka a Watson Immunity. He got all cocky a while back thinking he had conquered his cat allergy altogether, but then we stayed with his aunt and uncle for a night and he was in agony. I think it took him about six months to adjust.

  3. I believe 30 minutes of sex burns 85 calories, so 170 calories per hour. Where I read that didn't specify the size of person(s) or a certain position. Haha. So, if you have sex for a half an hour, 35.2 times, you can lose a pound.

Not a calorie counter. However, if I wanted to lose weight I probably would be. I'm like you and just try to keep the junk food under control and do a workout 5-6 days a week. I try to eat mostly organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and try to drink at least 60 ounces of water each day.

I have perennial indoor allergies. Or, as my Dr. put it: "a.k.a. you're allergic to dust mite crap...which means you're likely sensitive to molds as well as pets, since dust mites feed on pet dander."

Like you, I kept my dogs though. I just take my meds before bed, bought an air purifier for the bedroom, and try to dust and mop weekly. The Doc said I should have my husband, dust, sweep, and vacuum, but we both just laughed when he suggested that. Oh, and as odd as it is, I'm allergic to Benadryl. I took it a couple of times as a kid and my face swelled up like a blimp.

  4. Im allergic to dogs, but Allegra+ hand washing does the trick. And over time I got used to my pup. Been away from him for two years (he's with the fam) and now I'm back to ground zero when I visit. But oh well... they're worth it.

  5. I was allergic to cats when I was a kid. We didn't get rid of the cats .. I just built up an immunity to them. I now have two and no problems! Hang in there!!

  6. I used to work at an animal welfare organization overseas. I had a t-shirt that said "My doctor says my kid is allergic to my dog/cat....so I got rid of the kid!" Of course, that was before I had kids. I would never actually think of doing that...(whistling & looking up at the sky)...probably.

I'm glad Heidi can stay! Her golden face just makes me smile everytime I see it!

  10. My nutritionist said that the more of the SAME exercise you do day in and day out (for example if you mainly are a runner, or mainly a cyclist) you only burn 1/4 of what these calculators state. B/c just like anything we do...our bodies get more efficient and used to the motion. So therefore...we burn WAY less calories than we think we do. Just sharing the info! Oh and I'm OBSESSED with your Heidi pictures! EVERY day I look foward to seeing if there is a new one! What a sweetheart she is!

    1. Very interesting and actually that makes sense to some extent - but only a 1/4??? That kind of stinks but might explain why some runners actually gain weight while training.

  11. I am not a calorie counter; I just try to eat clean

  12. I did a calorie count when I started losing weight too fast and not progressing when I started running, but now I just try to eat as clean and healthy as possible and exercise regularly. I measure my success by how I feel during runs and workouts, and how quickly I can recover from them. So far it's working. Funny this came up today, since I've been writing about food this week. Sorry about the allergies. Luckily my only allergies are skin reaction to perfumes. No fabric softeners, colognes, or smelly deodorants and I'm good. Happy Wednesday SUAR.

Oh, and I ran with Kathryn of Run Eat Play RVA today. Hot mess of a run but you were mentioned in our marathon ramblings. That means you're pretty much famous. haha.

  13. I read that SAME thing in Health and I'm a spin instructor so I was like WTF?? I think most of the people in my class are pretty active the rest of the day but the over-eating may be an issue so thanks for reminding me! I also LOVE that you posted that picture!!

  14. Beth, love your blog. You need to read this hilarious link about a new runner's horrified realization regarding running and the unavoidable urge to poop. So worth your time...trust me.

  15. I'm allergic to Latex. Probably a hazard of working in healthcare. I suspected it a few years ago after I blew up one of my boys' whoopie cushions and my lips swelled up, yep duck lips for a day....that was a little weird...then my hands started itching when I used latex gloves at work. But I confirmed it after I had my annual gyne checkup and was umm...beyond uncomfortable for about 3 days after.

  16. You have a heart rate monitor. You have a sports watch. Set it all up and press start. Press finish when done, or the lap button if you're up for multiple rounds. At the end, your watch should tell you how many calories. I'm sure you'll post a comparison spreadsheet to other activities so that we can apply the proper correction factors. I'm sure that Ken won't mind in the least if you do this a number of times to increase the accuracy. After a month, you can tell us if your heart rate and caloric burn changes. There could be graphs, charts, all in pretty colors! I have such high hopes here!

  17. I did wear a heart rate monitor once in sex and I did get the HR up to about 170, but that was a long time ago... I now struggle to get it that high in running...

  19. Beth, the folks posting on your comments are as funny as you are!
I don't count calories, but watch how much of one thing I eat, and try to stop eating after 6:30 at night.
I don't suffer from allergies, other than when my neighbor mows the front lawn, I sneeze, but I feel for all of those who do suffer. my dog is the one with allergies. Skin, food, airborn, you name it, he's allergic to it. I have spent a ton of $$ on allergy pills, injections and different foods, to no avail. He's made it to 14 years old, so I figure he's ok.
I did have to get rid of a guy once, he was allergic to my cat. He told me it it was him or the cat. I don't miss him a bit.

  21. I recently read an article about how people overestimate the amount of calories they burn during sex. I think it's something like 150 calories per half hour but the average bout of sex lasts like 8 minutes (sad, I know, but probably true), so you're only burning 40 calories.

I don't count calories but I'm not trying to lose weight right now, either. Honestly, even when I do need to lose weight (like after pregnancy) I still stink at counting calories. I'm better at quantity and I typically just eat the same foods in lesser amounts. I hate feeling deprived, so I don't deprive myself. It works for me. Running helps.

I'm not sure I buy into that "the more you do it, the more your body gets used to it and the less calories you burn" business. I mean, then if you never changed anything and only did the same things (say, walked 3 miles a day and generally ate the same things) you would start gaining weight for no apparent reason and that doesn't typically happen. People who run 5 miles a day don't usually have to start eating 1/4 of the calories that they did 5 years before, do they? I think that's a gross miscalculation by somebody.

  22. I had horrible allergies growing up also, had to get allergy shots every week for years. At the time we had two dogs, rabbits and a bird and the doctor told my parents we had to get rid of them, they said no. I have never had a reaction to dogs, even though I'm supposed to be allergic to them (and everything else). I've only really had a reaction to cats, and that started about 15 years ago.
Hopefully you body adjusts soon and you aren't too miserable!

  23. Sex and calories burned - that's the real win, win! Okay, so my geekiness had me do a quick SportsDiscuss search (sex + calories burned) peer reviewed/journal article, but I only got "No results found". Looks like someone may have a great doctoral thesis awaiting them!

  24. I usually read and run but I absolutely could not this time. What an awesome photo bomb pic! Ha! The one of your son and Heidi is cute too but the other one is friekn hilarious! Anyways, I'm not a calorie counter but I have been trying my best to eat clean. And I only do exercise that I enjoy. Life is too short to do something you don't want to do!

  25. I actually knew that about eating - but I'm a bit of a nerd.

I have terrible allergies. I'm allergic to both cats and dogs, and have both. I do notice a difference right when I come back from a cat/dog free vacation. Hope you adjust to Heidi!

  26. I started counting calories in a effort to support my Husband's Weight Watchers counting, and being me, I became obsessed. I use MyFitnessPal which makes it incredibly easy.

Buuuuuuuut I often cheat and won't count calories on days when I know I will go over because I don't want to see those big red negative calorie counts. Haha.

    =)

Hope you get used to Heidi dog before too long and feel less itchy.
