Ironman Florida Training - Week Whatever

Is it bad I have no idea what week I am in with my training? I do know how many weeks I have left, however. I just don’t like to think about it. 12 weeks. Hot damn.

I had a solid 7 days of training last week.

Monday: Swim with Sharpie 30 minutes (work on technique). Run 30 minutes.
Tuesday: Bike 2 hours. Run 40 minutes.
Wednesday: Swim 1 hour
Thursday: Bike 2 hours, 20 minutes. Run 40 minutes.
Friday: Swim 1 hour.
Saturday: Half marathon (1:54). Swim 30 minutes.
Sunday: Bike 5 ½ hours.

True, there was no rest day in there, but this week I have TWO OF THEM. Stop my beating heart.

Bike – 155 miles
Run – 25 miles
Swim – 4.5 miles (~7,900 yards)

Totals: 184.5 miles. 16 hours, 34 minutes.

That, in a nutshell, is why I am tired. I do think I’m adjusting to these long training weeks. I have to pinch myself that I am really doing all of this to become an Ironman in November. It gives me the chills, the butterflies and makes me want to throw up all at the same time.

It is also why my hair is straggly and bleached out. It is either being doused in chlorine or thrown up into a makeshift bun nearly 100% of the time. I might need to shave my head and start over once I’m done with all of this. I think Brittany Spears did that.

Coach did give me some awesome shampoo for swimmers and I think it’s helping. Plus, it smells good.

She also gave me a jar of Salt Stick (electrolyte tabs), Tri Slide (makes getting the wetsuit on/off easier – think of  full body lube) and Foggle – the ultimate goggle de-fogger.

I am a huge smell person (my family would second that – Mom, can you please not fart again in the car and lock the windows?). What I mean is, I love perfumey smells in lotions, detergents, soaps, candles and shampoos. Maybe it is to ultimately cover up all of the odiferous things I expel.

I have had this smell addiction since I was in middle school. I used to be obsessed with Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific Shampoo and Loves Baby Soft. I don’t know if they sell either of those anymore. Oh, and I also loved Body on Tap shampoo.

(Btw, If you want to try some of the swimming shampoo, it is Tri Swim Shampoo and Conditioner).

Is this training insane or is it just me?

What product did you love from your tween/teen years? I was also pretty into marshmallow fluff, grape Bubble Yum, and Wacky Packages.

  1. I'm not sure if the training itself sounds more tiring or all the other things you're doing around the training.

Keep up the great work Beth!!! We are all so excited for you.

  3. I remember some guy in junior high saying, "Gee your hair smells like dog poop!" I was all ready for a big compliment on my fabulous smelling hair. Fail. Thanks for the reminder of wonderful 70s products!

You inspire me with your training!

  5. Would Foggle work on my sunglasses? They drive me crazy when they fog up while I am running.

  7. Okay, the products are fun to think about, but your training schedule from last week is cra-zy! You are truly awesome!

  8. Oh my gosh, I remember all of those!

  9. Wow! Great training week! Haha it makes all of my runs seem so measly in comparison ...

  10. Sun In- which turned my fine blonde hair into a dry straw like texture

  11. Good for you, that training schedule looks tough!

  12. This training is totally insane but you are rocking it! I love all the new and cool products you're finding (getting!) and seeing some oldies is so fun. I used to love those microwave nachos...you know, the ones with the day-glo orange cheese and you put the whole plastic container in your giant microwave? Um...gooey goodness.

  13. OMG, I loved "Love's Baby Soft" and "Love's Rain Scent!"

  14. Good God, Beth - you ROCK!

    Miss you!

  15. This is ho hum run of the mill IM training. Nothing to boast about, nothing to be ashamed of. No surprise to lose track of the weeks. Your hair is a lost cause till after the event. Either buzz it off (I am assured you'll be faster) or put it in a braid/bun and forget about it.

There won't be enough try-slide there. Go get a big container of it, or body glide, or whatever you like. Some people have two containers, carefully, oh so carefully labeled. One is for wrists, shins, neck, and all that. The other is for areas inside pants that need a bit of lube loving on long training days. I'm sure I don't have to be more explicit.

  16. November is so far away, you shouldn't think of the training you are doing as IRONMAN training!!! you are conditioning yourself so come October you will be ready to train!!!

ps it's looking good so far!!

  17. GOOOOOOO BETH!!!! You're doing so well! I love checking in and seeing what crazy stunts you've been pulling this week.

You're already an Iron Woman -just gotta go and get the medal ;)

When I was a teen I loved that bubblegum that came in one long tape. I loved the grape one. I also loved chocolate pop tarts, but nothing's changed there.

  18. Wouldn't it be easier to use cooking spray instead of applying full body lube? Easy on, easy off.

I used to use Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific...I kept waiting for a boy to come up to me and sniff my hair, and say that to me. Man, I was gullible.

  19. Yay! Good for you, Beth! Your training schedule is completely insane but I'm sure you can do it. Just be sure to eat eat eat!

  20. OMG I remember those shampoos! Yes, I am old. haha
There's one shampoo out there that makes your hair smell unbelievable - more so after a sweaty run - swear! I just can't remember which one it is and it's making really pissy that I can't find it again. It was a cheaper one - had to be, because that's all I buy. I will find it one day and share with you!

You are rocking this training. Rock star!!!

  21. Oh my gosh--Body on Tap! I loved it, too, and would still use it for the smell!

You are jamming with the training. Very excited for your big day!

  22. All of those products...I remember ALL of them. Love's Baby Soft - I think I wore it all the time. That and my mom's "Wind Song" perfume. Thought I was sumtin' else, yep!

  23. I laughed so hard at the fart and lock the windows sentence...because maybe that happens in our vehicles too.

  24. I found your blog this week. Great stuff, hilarious, and inspirational! I didn't read everything yet (yeah, I know), but do you have your running training up anywhere? I've been running for a little while now, but ever raced. I made a bet with some folks to run just a half marathon (although slowly), so now I'm trying to make sure I train right!

  25. An old lady farted out loud in my pilates class last night. I had to bite my lower lip to keep from giggling. Farts are just funny especially when they happen in a quiet room full of people.

  26. I am running my first half on Sunday and am nervous as hell. And you are running halves as just part of a training week... Definitely shows that we each have our own path and journey. At least I had better tell myself that before I get too depressed. And yes, they still make that damn Love's Baby Soft. It wasn't my thing the first time around and now my girls each got a bottle from their grandma so I still have to smell it after all these years. :-)

  27. Looks like a normal week.....haha! This shit can get long and tiring but you have to just keep reminding yourself why you are doing it. I had the words Ironman taped to my mirror so in the morning while brushing my teeth and splashing water on my face to wake up it was right there. Could not be ignored.

  28. I just biked from Longmont to Boulder and back on trails.. 32mi. round trip and I am tired. When I was "feeling it" along the way I thought of you and what you are doing.. You are in inspiration to many of us and I feel lucky that you have included us on your journey. Thank you.

  29. When I was a teenager all the girls were obsessed with Salon Selectives shampoo. That smell always brings me back;) We have a huge album of those Wacky stickers in our office that my husband saved from way back when! Crazy! He is hoping they will be worth something. Not sure if that will ever happen:/

  30. The training is crazy but also very admirable! I love a blast from the past....Love's Baby Soft. Also....the grape smell from Aussie hairspray. Being a hairdresser when water hits a clients head and all you can smell is waves of "grape!"

  31. You are rocking it! 5.5 hours on a bike...wooo my booty would be sore! I can manage 1-2 hours but 5+ that would be painful! Glad you are doing well, but I cannot imagine how tired i'd be too!

  32. You can still buy Gee your hair terrific from the vermont country store website for $14.95 a bottle. a little goes a long way, its still really strong.

  33. Beth - what an amazing week! I have to laugh to myself, though, as I am training for my first Half Marathon 9/22/13. While I thought MY training week was tough, I'm learning to shut up and feel grateful it wasn't YOUR training schedule, LOL! And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one feeling exhausted and lost during this training...WHEW! This is intense! But, like you, know it will all be worth it. Thank you for being so honest about your training experiences!

Ok, so Garnier Fructis apparently just came out with a new moisturizing shampoo. A chic shoved me a free sample at the Color Run a couple weekends ago...it smells delightful! It's ala Salon Selectives with that intense apple smell you could smell eight hours after washing it! "Look for it in your local market..." ;)

    1. I LOVE the apple smell. I'm going to try it. Good luck with your training - I think ALL training is intense in its own way!

I still remember the jingle for the commercial.

  35. Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper lip smackers
Wella Balsam shampoo to be like Farrah
Short and Sassy to be like Dorothy Hammill
Jhirmack to be like Victoria Principal
So very gullible when you're awkward and in junior high...

  36. Just wanted to tell you I just got back yesterday from TRR (Trans Rockies Run) and have done an Ironman two years ago. More than just myself stated that an IRONMAN event is "cake" compared to 6 days of TRR!! Just saying..Good Luck

  37. They still sell "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific" at the Vermont Country Store. LOL

  38. I have "TriSlide" and used it before my sprint tri. I just sprayed it before I put my regular swim suit on in my bathroom that morning. When I returned home, I walked into my bathroom and nearly broke my neck because the floor was ridiculously slippery. Being the responsible adult that I am, I just moved my bathroom rug to cover up the spot till I decide to mop. The reviews for TriSlide are just as hilarious. My favorite mentions "don't spray this then pick up the baby!".

  40. Yes Bon Bell lip smackers!! We'd collect them all. =]
I also very much relate to other commenters' reactions of "whoa compared to your training schedule mine looks easy(/weak)!"
Mine is almost none existent this week (I'll get maybe 10miles in total) but that's because I ran Hood to Coast this past weekend and am still recovering. 17 miles on 2 hours of sleep (+ an ankle I sprained the Mon before race day) is interesting...interestingly hard, even. Signing up for my first half marathon in the winter like a glutton for punishment anyway and will soon have to get on a serious training schedule for that. My toenail that's trying to lift off from the gigundo blister just above it would really like it if I didn't run at all this week probs, but I just can't do that. Getting back at it will be hard enough.
But training a whopping 16 and a half hours straight to cover the best part of 200miles?!...Holy cow!! Go SUAR go!
