Proof I Do Have A Life Outside of Ironman Training

Another week of training. Another week of eating a million calories (not all of them healthy – but who gives a crap?). Another week of trying to keep my eyes open in the afternoon. Someone training for an Ironman might often be mistaken for someone who has narcolepsy. It’s possible.

Here’s how it broke out this week:

image

Monday: rest
Tuesday: 5 mile run with intervals
Wednesday: 12 mile run
Thursday: 2,400 yard swim, 20 mile bike ride
Friday:  21 mile bike
Saturday: 51 mile bike
Sunday: 52 mile bike, 2,000 yard swim

Total time: 13 hours, 39 minutes
Total Workouts: 8
Total Miles: 164.9 (Swim ~3.9 miles, bike 144 miles, run 17 miles)

I feel great coming off of the week. I find it amazing how the body adapts. I spent 6.5 hours on my bike in the past two days and I can still function and my crotch is in one piece. I can probably do the moonwalk or do Double Dutch if I really wanted.

I did today’s ride solo. While yesterday’s ride was the front half of the Boulder course, today’s was the last half. Here are some of the views. I am not sure why the bike course goes through Kansas.

Just to prove to you I have a life outside of training, here are some other highlights from the week.

Shopping with Emma who enjoys posing on the cart. I am not sure where she learned to be such a ham because I never do things like that. I mean I NEVER stood on the back of the cart when I was six and made the whole thing fall over on me. Never.

IMAG3160

I went to meet the Helly Hansen people in Boulder. Helly is up and coming in the world of running and outdoor gear. Their 2015 line will feature some really stylish pieces that have cutting edge wicking technology. They are also the official gear sponsor of the Bolder Boulder.

IMAG3144

They sent me this Feather Jacket recently, which I really love. I’ve worn in for both cycling and running.

Afterwards, I got rather busy and almost ran out of gas.

IMAG3142

I saw mama and ducklings out back. I could watch these little ones all day. It is so cute how they cling to their mama. Do you ever think she needs a duck’s night out? Just to get away?

IMAG3140-1

We had a dog cuddle session. Heidi needs to learn she is not a lap dog.

IMAG3130

I made some Pro Cakes from a mix that the Pro Cake people sent over. These are gluten free and unlike most pancakes are packed with protein. I have made them now after two of my long workouts. They have a nutty and satisfying taste (I know this because I tasted them plain before covering them in Mrs. Butterworth's syrup). Doesn’t everyone wear their down coat inside in May? (I am always freezing after I run).

IMAG3125

My mom, Emma and I made super hero capes and headbands for tomorrow’s Bolder Boulder 10K. I thought these turned out the cutest.

Egg sandwich or pancakes? I usually go for the egg sandwich. Today I had both.

Do you get cold after runs or is it just me?

Tell me a story about when you ran out of gas.

What’s the last “unhealthy” thing you ate? Dots and Kettle Corn in bed last night.

  1. Totally egg sandwich. I don't get really cold after runs but sometimes I get goosebumps and the hair on my arms stands up. Wouldn't be so bad except I have really hair arms I think! I've only run out of gas once. I was on a highway and a guy in a white van with no windows pulled over. I was spooked a bit but I live on the prairies in Canada and it was -45C and he said he'd wait with me for someone else to stop if I didn't want to get in the van. Hehe - probably a really good line but he turned out to be a super nice guy. Phew!! Last unhealthy thing was a mini bag of Old Dutch Montreal Steak Spice kettle chips. But they were part of a snack handed out after a race so I think that cancels it out. :) Love those capes!

  4. Helly Hansen has been around since the turn of the century. They developed the first fleece jacket in 1961 and have been top outdoor outfitters since then.
I have never run out of gas.

    2. Yes I know they've been around since the 1800s when Helly Hansen developed one of the first rain jackets. I think he was a fisherman.

  6. I am always freezing after a run. I had blue lips after my run yesterday, and this is Israel in May.

  7. With the tusk pics I post, you are expecting me to talk about being cold. Not! I have an out of gas story. Once upon a time I was driving from Streetsville to Calgary. All the gas stations on the way into Regina going west were on the wrong side of the road. No problem, I thought, I'll get gas on the way out. The ring road takes you south around Regina, and suddenly you are out of the city and onto the bald prairie. We are talking seriously flat, I could see no gas stations. I didn't want to turn back, but wasn't sure I could make it to the next town. As I was dithering, I passed the sign for a little town called Pense. A really small town, but they said there was gas. I went there, to find the gas station closed. It was about 5pm on a Saturday. I did not panic. I grew up in small towns. I could hear a BBQ. I left the car there, and walked a block to knock on a fence. As soon as I said hello, they asked if I was looking for gas. After I said yes, they said no problem, but first I had to have a burger and beer, while the gas station owner finished his. I was a skinny kid back then. Turns out this happens weekly or so. I always wondered if they had something on the Regina zoning commission to prevent gas stations on the west side of town. I was back there maybe 10 years ago, and there are still no gas stations there. It's still flat, too.

  10. I'm ALWAYS cold after I run!

Oh, and I have run out of gas exactly once in my life. I was 15 and on my way to take my driver's license test. 23 incident-free years later, I think I proved that I definitely learned my lesson. ;-)

    1. Hahaha! How ironic is that running out of gas on the way to your driver's test...

  12. I'm so excited to run Bolder Boulder tomorrow! I'm in town from Milwaukee.

  13. I always get cold after runs! I live in Singapore and its 95 degrees every day with almost matching humidity. I sweat like a pig the whole way through the run - whilst feeling like my vital organs are melting - and then get back and have to put on track pants and a hoodie almost immediately. It makes no sense to me.

  14. So very cool Helly is getting in on running/cycling gear! And yes to eggs most of the time and pancakes when I have more time...like today :-) Happy training!

  16. I am ALWAYS cold after a run! I'm so relieved to find out I'm not alone in that. I prefer an egg sandwich to pancakes. And I've never run out of gas...although my parents probably don't remember my teen years in the same way. Last unhealthy thing...I threw a surprise 50th birthday party for my husband last night so pretty much everything I ate then was unhealthy!

  17. Last night I had a pop tart- it was soooo good! I have never run out of gas but I am very scared for it to happen someday....

  18. Glad you liked the procakes!!! Xo

  19. I am always cold when I get home from working out. Summer going into air conditioning is the worst.

Last unhealthy thing I ate - Chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I didn't actually eat it as ice cream, but when I was making it for my sister-in-law for her birthday, I ate it hot. Not sure which way I like it better.

  24. Glad I'm not the only one that gets cold. After my last half marathon I watched my boys baseball game under a blanket and it was about 90 degrees out.

  25. Egg sandwich! Yum.

I am often cold after runs. No matter the temp, my sweat turns to ice within minutes.

  26. Egg sandwich, of course. In fact, I got my husband a breakfast sandwich maker for Christmas, and we use that thing almost every day--cooks the English muffin, cheese, meat, and egg all at once in a neat little bundle. I am always cold after a run, too; I never reject one of those cheapie space blankets they offer after a half, so I probably have a couple dozen stuffed in the car and garage. I have not run out of gas, but my husband has several times. Best story about that: he had a car that could use either gas or propane, so it had three tanks, two for gas and one for propane. He managed to run out of fuel in all three more than once.

  27. I ate 4 rolls of smarties while watching TV in bed last night. I woke up with a single purple one stuck to the side of my cheek, (the one on my face). Sadly, this is a normal occurance.

  28. Eggs IN the toast- cut a circle out of the middle of the bread and fry the egg in the hole. Delish- my standard post long-run meal!
Ran out of gas about 3 miles from home after picking up a brand new fleet car from the dealership. I wasnt used to the dashboard and never noticed they only put a tiny of amount of gas in it! I called them up and gave them a tongue lashing about how my brand new car was already broken down before i realized it was out of gas. Oopsie-daisy!
Unhealthy food- Chick FilA chicken strips. I usually eat super healthy but i am powerless over Chick FilA. Is that a Southern thing?? Do you have them out west?? And they must be smothered in the uber unhealthy creamy Chick FilA sauce. But i do get a side of fruit because the fruit totally balances out the fat in the fried chicken fingers.

    1. Yes, Chick Fila is a weakness of mine as well. Love the chicken sandwich with extra pickles.

  29. Forgot to mention that i recently saw a Mama duck and about twelve baby chicks about to cross a busy two-lane road at a particularly precarious curve in the road. I thought for a moment that i was going to have to decide quickly whether to risk an accident and my own life or run over twelve baby chicks which would scar me for life. Thankfully, Mama Duck made an about face just before i was about to have to make that choice, and wisely, all baby chicks followed her back into the water! I think my heart rate stayed high for an hour after!

  30. im always cold after i run. whats up with that? it can be 90 degrees and i still need a hot shower to warm up!

  31. The first and last time I ran out of gas was when I lived in Orlando. I was driving to Magic Kingdom (yes, even locals go to Disney).. Not a single person pulled over to help. But who can blame them? Passersby were mostly families in massive conversion vans with screaming kids. I felt worse for them than I did for me. Eventually the po-po stopped to help.

Last unhealthy thing I ate… hmm.. well I am 4 days away from my marathon so it seems like everything I put in my mouth is a refined carb. I'll go with gummy bears. The entire bag.

  32. Pancakes always win hands down. Last unhealthy thing I ate? A bison burger smothered in guacamole, garlic mayo, smoked ketchup with pickles, lettuce & tomato. And a side of sweet potato / regular fries. Washed down with a beer. :) I'm ALWAYS freezing after a run. Probably because I refuse to shower until AFTER I've made pancakes and inhaled them standing at my kitchen counter.
