Colorado Has PMS

We’ve had an odd weather day around here (Boulder):

In case you weren't in Boulder today here is the weather sequence perfectly captured by aerospace engineering student Chris Nie and shared in Twitter (https://twitter.com/christophernie/status/531955600465203200).

This morning when I walked Heidi it was 64 degrees. By 3pm it was 21 degrees and snowing. Colorado has the reputation for being pre-menstrual with all kinds of weather mood swings and severe instability.

I am no psychologist, but my guess is that our motivation to run is directly correlated to the weather outside.

Self talk when it’s a beautiful day: I’m kind of tired this morning but it is too gorgeous outside to not go for a run.

Self talk when it’s shitty outside: I’m kind of tired. F&ck running.

That said, here is my best advice when you have that “f&ck running” attitude, be it due to weather, your period, laziness, darkness or gas:

  1. Toughen the hell up. You probably spend 95% of your day in pleasant temperatures (inside or out) with a steaming cup of coffee at your disposal. It is okay to be uncomfortable for a short amount of time while you run. The pay off is ridiculously worth it.
  2. Call your sponsor. You don’t have to be in A.A. to have a sponsor. Pick a friend who you make a pact with. This is the person you will call when you are about to wussy out of a run. Make sure this person is someone who can boss you around and remind your lazy ass to just get out there.
  3. Think of those that can’t run. Then do #1.
  4. Don’t give yourself a choice. You planned to run. Just because you are tired or whatever doesn’t mean that plan goes out the window. Treat it like brushing your teeth, taking a dump or going got your dentist appointment. It is simply something that is part of your day and must happen regardless of circumstances.

Tomorrow morning when it is 8 degrees as is forecasted, I will take my own advice. I will be tough. I will be grateful. I will not give myself a choice. I will also probably cuss like a sailor as the cold air hits my lungs and cramps up my muscles.  I could go to the treadmill, but I know I won’t. I belong outside (unless there is ice. I am a runner not a hockey player).

What’s the temperature RIGHT now where you are? 19 degrees.

Do you have a mantra that helps you get out the door? Yes, shut up and run. Duh.

  2. I'm looking at your pictures and thinking that no matter what the conditions, you live in a beautiful place. I could run there. Any time. Just go!!!

And it's 50 right now, but I'll be in your boat tomorrow. Running along the highway. Ugh.

    1. Yes that is the truth..and the reason I always try to run outside regardless!

  3. It has varied from 30-60s. I know that Wednesdays I will be out with my local running group. They are my sponsors. Hopefully no snow. I don't have a gym or a treadmill.

  4. 61 in Savannah, Georgia! Forecast for tmrw is 79! Grateful to be a southern girl! I would be a total wuss in the snow. I cringe when I have to run in 35 degree temps in the winter and no snow!

As Nike says... "just do it!" But, truthfully, I don't even allow the internal chatter to take place. As you said, its like brushing your teeth- automatic, non-negotiable, has to happen.

  5. The wind chill is supposed to be -27 C tomorrow. (-16 F) I'm probably going to run. It depends more on how my legs feel. But wait! There's a good chance I could post the first tusk pictures of the winter. That does it. Prepare yourselves.

  6. Your weather kind of sucks. It's 10 pm and a dulcet 63F right now. But it was 102F at one point this summer, so I guess we're even.

  7. What crazy weather! It was a warmish day today, I think in the high 50s

  8. It's a balmy 40 degrees here! Perfect running weather.
I use #3 and then just freakin do it!

  9. Right now its 52°! I am trying to take it in while I can, supposed to be in the 30's the rest of the week! I made sure to get my warmer running gear around this weekend so I am ready!

  10. Our temp seems mild compared to that shift. Yesterday it was a balmy 64 with lots of sunshine and today's high will be just above freezing.

  11. It is 50 here today. I need to read your blog daily as it gives me the motivation I so desperately need. Have you tried Yak Traks for when it gets icy?

    1. Yes I use them a lot in snow but they don't help so much with ice😕

  12. I know, I have no idea how to dress these days. The days start out warm and then get cold by the time I leave work! Raining and 43 in Illinois. By this afternoon, looks like we are heading into the 20's. UGH. I don't blame you with the ice. I use my indoor track when there is ice on the ground.

  13. 34 degrees, wind chill is 23 (19 mph winds). Ran at 5:30 am with my group. I would not get up and run if I didn't have them. Thursday is supposed to be 19 degrees. Will be interesting to see what the wind chill is then. We'll still run.
No mantra; I just know my friends will be out there expecting me.

  14. It's currently 18 degrees here, but was 20 this morning when I ran. Except the "real feel" was more like 7 degrees due to the wind. And the snow. But I ran anyway using "shut up and run" as my mantra. Thanks for that!

  18. Last Tuesday, it was 50 degrees at 5 a.m. when I ran. This weekend, it was windy and cold. Foot bridges were slick. Today it was 50s again at 5 a.m. but will be down to the 20s later in the week. Indiana stinks. AT least you get to look at mountains.

I just ask myself: When the hell else am I going to run? I can do it as planned and feel good or skip it and spend way too much time trying to reschedule.

  19. Temperature right now in Grand Junction, CO: 38 degrees F. It was a frosty 25 when I ran at 5:30 this morning. When it drops to single digits, that's when I wimp out.

No mantra, just a border collie staring at me. That gets me out the door every time.

  21. It's 90 degrees in Singapore. Lucky me today, humidity is only 59% (usually 98%). I may not have to shower before I run tonight.

    Thanks for that Nike!

  23. Screw that, I hit the treadmill! LOL
I HATE the treadmill, but my legs can never seem to warm up in really cold weather, I have crappy runs, and can't afford $80 insulated running tights. :/

  24. Did a 3 miles in 20 degree windy slippery road conditions yesterday and when I was done all i thought was "wow that was nice!" :) And I only stopped because I ran out of daylight, not because of the weather. Headlamp running in the boondocks on icy roads after dark is a bit too dangerous for me! Later this week when it gets down in the single digits I plan to run in town where maybe I'll get some wind break and traffic will be slower!
