Best and Worst of the Week

It’s Friday!! Time to review some highs and lows from the week. Did I say it’s Friday?

Best Meal I Made: I’ve made this many times before, but it stands as one of my favorite veggie meals. And, the whole family eats it, which is a huge bonus. Rice and Bean Casserole with Guacamole.

Best Book I Read: Well, I didn’t read the whole thing because my head has been spinning off my neck this past week with work stuff, but I did start Missoula by Jon Krakauer.

image

Best Run I Took: I haven’t done any super interesting runs this week (see the thing about work above), but today I only had time for a short 3 mile run, so I busted it out in about 24 minutes. Sometimes it’s just good to pound it out, breathe heavy and sweat.

Best Show I Watched: I am HOOKED on “Naked and Afraid.” I like watching the bare butts (some nicer than others), but I also appreciate the quotes from the show, “I think I have a leech on my scrotum.” We also went through the entire first season of “Togetherness.” Hilarious.

Best New Product I Tried: I get offered lots of supplements, new protein/endurance drinks, etc. I don’t try many of them, but I decided to sample HeadOn because they are a local company (Denver). Have to say I love this product, not just for the taste, but for the ingredients. Check it out.

image

Best Quote I Overheard (at Starbucks): Two teenage girls were sitting at a table watching two moms outside with strollers. “I cannot wait until I have a baby so I can drink Starbucks all day and just talk to my friends.” Hmmm…

Best Moment With Heidi:

IMG_3809

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Worst Way I Acted Like a Mom: I got into a very heated argument with a 17 year old boy at a concert and embarrassed my daughter. But, I was right and he needed to be handled.
Worst Running Moment: For me this is always about some interruption to my run because of the urge to poop. This week is was related to that time of the month. ‘Nuf said. I know for a fact you don’t want to hear more or to see pictures.
Worst (Best?) Over-Indulge: Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn. It is like crack. Do not even open the bag.
Give me a best and a worst from your week. Right now. Do it.
SUAR
  1. Worst? Arguing with my 17 year old son who needed to be set straight. What is it with those 17 year old boys? It was pretty unpleasant, and really, I'm so done with him. Pretty much sent my morning into a tailspin. Best? A patient that I took care of 7 years ago, when she was an infant, at a different hospital, ended up in my exam room today for a physical. I put the pieces of the puzzle together and made the connection. What are the odds? And that turned my day around. Funny how the universe balances everything out, isn't it?
  3. Worst: I'm an OT in inpatient rehab. All I can say is that it was a poop-tastrophy of epic proportions!!
    It was Poop-TASTIC!!
    Best: an extra, unscheduled day off
  4. Best & Worst: My husband is off on his annual cycling vacation with his brother and friends. Best because I don't have to cook, or clean, or shave. Worst, because he's traveled a ton this year (I think this is week 10) so I am tired of living alone! Another best, the work he's been doing is being rewarded with a bonus. Another worst, I have plantar fasciitis - first time in 19 years of running. I've taken 2 weeks off running and it's slowly starting to feel better. One more best, my husband put new tires on my mountain bike before he left (um, I may have put a little guilt trip on him...) and I've been riding like a boss!
  5. Best--today, while out running, I had on my shirt--"Shut Up and Run" (from LONG before it was cool to be a follower of your blog! Yes, I was there around 300! ;) And a mom was running towards me and yelled, "I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!" That was cool...I felt famous...thank you.
    Worst--I didn't get a grant I was hoping for, but I've already gotten 3 scholarships for my admin credential, so truly, it was a good reminder of how to handle a smidge of defeat and carry on! Actually, it reminded me of trying to qualify for Boston so many damn times!!!
  6. Best AND worst was the deep tissue massage I got on Monday. I was literally laying there sweating, breathing, and waiting to hear bones crack. Afterwards, I felt like I needed another massage. I had to take Advil that night. I was stiff and sore the next two days and felt like I had been in a car accident. That being said, I had the best week of running! I think she actually massaged out all the lactic acid and loosened all the tightness remaining from running Boston Marathon.
  9. Worst: Taking my daughter to get six stitches in her chin after fainting in the bathroom.
    Best: Finishing my day with a spin class where I totally crushed it.
  10. Best: Having some wonderful laughs with my hubby. When he and I get silly, we can make each other laugh so hard.
    Worst: Getting a piece of tree branch in my eye. OWWWWWW!
    ReplyDelete
  11. Best is having some great laughs with hubs while over dinner. Worst -- getting into a huge fight with my best friend before she left for a 5 week overseas trip.
  12. Worst: being too scared to run in case my hips / knee keep hurting (finally fixed SI joint problems after many years = f-ed up hips, which = really really sore knee when I run, which = no running but lots of yoga while I try to balance everything out again) HOPEFULLY once this is better that's the end of it!!!
    Best: having two people compliment my yoga practice after class. I know it's not about the props but it really made me feel good :)
  13. My son and I were getting frozen yogurt and a kid walked up and swiped the yogurt dispenser with his finger and then licked his finger and then did it three more times to different dispensers!!! I started to get loud as I was explaining to him that was unacceptable behavior. My son (11yo) wasn't really embarrassed but was more shocked about the whole thing. Totally grossed me out.
    Real curious about the nude dancing photo :)
    Great trail run today. 9KM orientation run for 5 peaks series in Squamish BC
  15. Worst: confirmation that my ongoing ankle pain isn't just gonna disappear....it's a torn tendon along with some bone issues in my heel. Surgery is on my calendar and then 6 weeks at least on crutches. Very depressing. Best: the bag of chocolate covered almonds I've been gorging on to console myself.
    Ahh the perception of the young and clueless.
    Best - celebrating a girlfriends birthday Friday night with an awesome dinner party.
    Worst - work people
  19. I love that Boom-Chicka-Pop stuff...you are right, so addictive. My best - a surprise podium finish after a tough race with technical difficulties. My worst - some "turf wars" at work.
  20. Best: looking back at the pictures I've taken of my first graders over the past school year
    Worst: trying to survive the last week of school with the before-mentioned first graders
  21. Best: my husband, son and I went bowling after church today. Worst: my mom, who has been recovering from a stroke & living with us, flat out demanded we take her home against doctor's orders yesterday. And, well, we did. The physical stress of her living with us is gone, but my emotional stress is now off the charts. But, hey, at least I can fit running back into my schedule?
    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rachel, that sounds so stressful and yes, emotional. What a gift to your mom to do that for her. I hope it goes okay, the living back at home. Hang in there and yep...get those much needed runs in.
  22. I LOVE Naked and Afraid!!!! I watched it once out of curiosity and am now completely hooked. I would totally apply to be on it, but I prefer to remain clothed and confident (har... har...)
    My best this week was the banana bread I made. Up until now, B-bread has been the bane of my existence, and I have finally perfected the recipe.
    My worst this week was the two temper tantrums I had in front of my husband. I was OTR and decided that not being able to "run fast" when it's 90 degrees out was reason enough to cry and stamp my foot. Hormones do weird things to this lady.
  25. Worst half marathon ever this past Saturday...hills, humid, hot, hilly, headwinds, and more blasted hills! Best, I finished!
  26. Best: picking out granite for my kitchen countertops that is soooo beautiful. I've been waiting 11 years for this!
    Worst: signing on the dotted line to pay for it.
    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I want to do that so bad. Where did you go for your counters?
      Delete
    2. Check out Quartz before you buy granite. We got Zodiac, made by DuPont, about 15 years ago. It won't chip, crack or stain, and it doesn't have to be sealed and then periodically resealed. When we bought it, it was twice the cost of granite, but I believe the costs are now comparable.
      Delete
    3. Got the granite and cabinets from Home Depot. Way more affordable than the stand alone shops.
      We took out a line a credit with them and got a very low interest rate.
      Hope you can upgrade your kitchen soon. I know you love to cook, the facelift makes cooking and entertaining even more enjoyable.
  28. Worst run - the 15 miler yesterday - hot, sticky, and bonked about halfway through, so I ended up doing a walk run combination.
    Best run - the same one, because I finished it in such ugly weather. The weigh in afterwards was a water loss 6 pounds below my morning weigh in.
  29. Best of the Week: Ran sound system for a wedding over the weekend, which meant I had to go out and buy new dress clothes -- because I would have been swimming in my old ones... went from 40" loose fit / pleated to 34" slim fit / flat fronts! Who is that guy in the mirror?
    Best Run: Went out for a 5-6 miler Saturday morning under overcast skies / sprinkles and 55 degree temps, and I was having so much fun that I turned it into a 9.5 miler! Record pace, too!
    Worst of the Week: Taking care of an ill cat because my mother is unable to do the post-veterinary care. Just hope it can go back to live with her soon! As sweet as the kitty is, we are dog people, not cat people...
  30. Best - running at the cottage. Worst - starting my runner's tan early. And - how did I miss out on drinking Starbucks and talking to my friends all day when I had my kids...(I didn't know that was an option. :) )
  31. Can't wait to read the book. I'm from MT so I'm surprised I haven't already.
    Best weekend...graduated my youngest. He couldn't be cuter. Now I have to stop drinking Starbucks and talking to my friends all day. Dammit.
    We just redid our kitchen. As in..I just painted everything for a total of $237. I'm cheap. I will redo the countertops but seriously folks, I'm not getting granite. I want to see the world. I want to travel. I want to run in Italy. I'm so not spending money on my kitchen. I'm going to get another round of pretty laminate (the last round lasted me 15 years and looked great) and call it good.
    My friend's husband did all the work himself on a beautiful kitchen, SUPER tiny, gorgeous countertops, cupboards, flooring, everything. $10,000 plus. yikes.
    Italy, People. Italy. I want to go back.
  32. Hello. Just ran across your Blog. I'm in training for my first Rock N Roll...well really my second since I had to take a DNS last year when I shattered my heel five weeks before the race. I've logged in three successful Half marathons and numerous 5Ks up until my last half in December of 2013. I took a mini break to let a broken toe heal up after unsuccessfully switching to minimus shoes for my marathon. I started a three month comeback and was on schedule for the 2014 Rock N Roll then went down with my season ending injury. Well...it's still sore...my heel...but I decided to make a go for my comeback this year in time for the 2015 Rock N Roll next month. I'm so overweight and out of shape and freaked out that I will be one of the heftier racers next month. I also only faintly remember being so zapped building up my mileage for my first half marathon in 2012. I'm approaching a HUGE birthday this year and need this gift of a comeback to ring it in. Can you chat about the struggles of a comeback after a huge season ending injury for me. I need to read up on all the information that I can over the next four weeks. Thank You.
