7 Reasons I Cannot Stop Talking About Running

There are so many things I LOVE about this short video called “First Person to Run a Marathon Without Talking About It.”

If you haven’t watched it, it is probably worth the two minutes and forty seconds of your life. Basically, it pokes fun at us marathoners who feel the need to constantly discuss the fact that we are training for/running a marathon.

Oh, hey, yeah I can’t go out for drinks tonight. I have my long run in the morning because I am TRAINING FOR A MARATHON!”

I’m sorry I’m kind of out of it today. Did I tell you I’m tired because I’m TRAINING FOR A MARATHON??”

You probably are wondering why I’m shuffling up the steps and am in pain. Did I tell you I RAN A MARATHON THIS WEEKEND??”

Did you notice my new necklace? Yea, that’s actually a medal from when I RAN MY MARATHON LAST WEEKEND!!”

IMG_5271Whaaatt?? It goes with my outfit.

We are all a bit too uptight. We all need to learn to laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves so very seriously. Yes, if we have every training for a marathon or half marathon probably everyone in our lives knows it. And, why not? It’s a huge accomplishment, it requires a crap load of our time and it deserves some bragging rights.

This video could also be called, “She Never Even Put a 26.2 Sticker on Her Car.”

Let’s REALLY break it down. Why do we need to talk of our running so much? Why do we share it all over social media? Why do we blog about it?

Okay, for you .2% who are much better than the rest of us and NEVER discuss your running, this does not apply to you.

I don’t consider myself to OVER share with my running (only with other runners), but I do kind of like to talk about it if someone asks. Here’s what I would tell people who are annoyed by my talk of running (With a small dose of sarcasm. What is there not a sarcasm font?):

1. Just like you enjoy hitting a very small white ball into a very small hole every Sunday and relish in telling me your score (which doesn’t mean anything to me, much like running a sub-3 hour marathon probably means nothing to you), running is my passion, hobby, sanity. Excuse me if it seeps out of my pores sometimes.

2. Only 1% of the population runs a marathon. That means I am special and strong and need to be acknowledged! Just like someone who visits the moon or meets Taylor Swift or completes the cinnamon challenge! This is life changing and something people should be in awe of!

3. Maybe I have nothing that is worthwhile talking about except training for and running a marathon. Maybe all I do everyday is wake up, eat Cheerios, go to work, eat spaghetti, watch Scandal and go to bed. Maybe running a marathon is ALL THAT I HAVE.

4. Okay, so you might not be a runner, but one of the reasons I talk about my marathon training and running is to find a common ground with other people who ARE runners.

5. My parents are not proud of me and I am still trying to get their approval and attention. Oh,  you know a good therapist? Thanks.

6. My kids are lazy so I hope that by talking about my marathon at dinner, at bedtime, at breakfast and at snack time I will rub off on them and they will be inspired.

7. Truth is, I do not really think I can run 26.2 miles. It’s not natural and it seems deviant. If I tell you I am going to run this far then I better run this far or you will judge me and think I’m weak. Maybe me telling you is so that you will hold me accountable!

That’s all I got.

What would you say to people who think you talk too much about your running? (sarcastic or not).

Has anyone ever told you that you talk about running too much? No, but I can read their minds.

  1. That video is hilarious. Your blog's sort of funny too. sarcasm serif. You should consider learning how to add links using the _blank html that opens new links without closing your page, to save me clicks. sarcasm mono. I only blog about running because I was taught to never talk politics and religion in polite company. Sometimes I still do though. I figure it's my blog. sarcasm sans.

  2. Nobody has ever told me I talk about running too much. And if they should ever do so, that's fine. I'll talk to them about SQL instead.
    With a as (SELECT assetnum...
I think you get the idea.

  3. So yesterday my sister called and I know it took a lot of courage for her to ask me about my marathon. But she did. And I blathered on for a couple of minutes. I know she was rolling her eyes. Maybe even gritting her teeth....But she let me talk. And I love her so much for that....

  4. I just watched that video. So funny!! My daughter, who actually does run cross country, told my husband and I that we should talk about something other than running for a change. The nerve!! ;)

  5. I don't see anything wrong with being proud of an accomplishment and sharing about it. I once did this 300 hour ultra...just kidding. I think we all need to lighten up and meet people where they are. If they are friends or family you let them tell their stories, whether you want to hear them or not. That's empathy right? And being human. Oh and being a good person too! I appreciate the people who let me be me the most, and while many of my stories are from a run or a race, I don't think they are any less special than the story of their Mulligan eagle on a long par-5. Great post and topic.

  6. I watched the video, and thought it was hilarious. Of course, the reason I watched it was because I was tagged by a FB friend (with a winky face) -- a friend who has run a marathon in the past, and ran a half with me this past May -- but he doesn't post about any of his workout stuff on social media.

While I found the video to be quite humorous, and I do love good sarcasm, I also am somewhat annoyed by an attitude out there that can be summed up by memes that state things like, "Unless you video'd yourself falling off a treadmill, I don't want to see any of your fitness posts on my timeline". IMO, it's no different than posting about trips to the pumpkin patch, going skiing, playing golf, taking a weekend excursion with the wife, a family trip to Hawaii, getting pumpkin spice lattes at the local cafe, weekly video's of little Johnny's touchdown runs, etc.

Social media exists entirely so people can share what they are doing in their life with people they assume they are friends with (to some degree). I've worked hard to get where I am today, and dammit, I'm going to post about some of my accomplishments -- whether finish line pic from my first half marathon, before & after pics from 65 lbs. ago, or even just a post about an especially exhilarating training run (like yesterday's run in the rain -- I loved it!). If my friends don't like it, they can simply scroll on by...

  7. I totally had to laugh at that video, because it came out the very same day that I put my new, shiny "26.2" sticker on my car. I am totally not humble! But I agree with your first statement - it's my passion and it just comes out. Sorrynotsorry! My husband has never told me that I talk about running too much, but I can usually tell when I need to switch the subject. Especially when I'm injured and moreso just whining about not running.

  8. This video made me laugh so much when I first saw it, because EVERYONE knows I run. I talk about it so much. But, when I started thinking about it, it reminded me why I first started running, first took the step to a half marathon, then the step to a marathon. It's because women who I knew and admired TALKED ABOUT RUNNING and I thought, damnit, if they can run 26.2 miles, then I can too.
I think part of me hopes that through enthusiastically and joyfully talking about how much running has helped me, I will maybe get someone else to consider lacing up their shoes and going for a run.

  9. Ha, this is so true! After finishing the Chicago marathon this month (yup I ran a marathon!) I couldn't stop talking about it. My poor Hubs heard every second-by-second recap. I think his eyes told me I spoke to much about this marathon but I didn't listen. It does help when my run club can't wait to hear about every single mile. True friends and running fanatics like me! :)

  10. Saturday nights for us are:
Me: How was your ride today?
Husband: Great, we rode blah, blah, and I dropped so and so on such and such climb, but got chicked...
Then, husband: How was your run today?
Me: Great, I ran x miles with x at tempo. It was all great until GI distress, blah, blah...

This goes on while we are both trying to stay awake during dinner. Glad I'm married someone who "gets" me! And because his rides are usually 70-100 miles, his stories are longer, so he can't complain about mine!

    1. I could not agree more. My husband I speak the love language of running and while we don't talk about it ad nausuem, I'm glad I can share it with him and he gets it.

  11. I definitely talk too much about running and people have told me that. But in all fairness one of those girls who said I talk about it too much (who didn't understand my running) started running few months later AND ran a marathon (and told people about it). So I guess I've done my job by sharing the fun of running, even if I do it a bit toooo much.

  12. When we are out and someone asks me anything about running my husband gives me "the look." The more he sighs and rolls his eyes the longer I seem to continue to talk running. Coincidence? I think not.
It usually takes about three texts from him, while he is right next to me, to get off the running talk.

  13. As a seasoned old geezer, I think I've found a balance. I can talk running all day with other runners, but usually only elaborate if I'm asked. For example, if I see a fellow local runner and s/he asks me how things are going, I'll give a brief answer, but if they ask for details I'm happy to get into the nitty gritty. With non-runners, I usually keep comments simple, such as I can't go for drinks after work, as I'm going for a run, or what ya doing this weekend? Oh, just running a little race. I think I've learned over the years how to keep running discussions short enough to prevent eye glaze with the non-runner crowd. Unless of course they diss running, in which case I will defend it with as much enthusiasm as necessary.

  14. I've mastered the art of not boring non-runners with my running tales... but heaven help the runner who starts a conversation - bllllerrrrhhhh verbal diarrhea of my running and injury history and training ups and downs and everything else I've been holding back from the non-runners!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've learned not to go into too much detail about my runs, even when non-runner friends ask how training is, because they don't understand some of the nuanced details and it ends up boring them. But I'll never stop posting about my workouts or my workout pictures...it's what keeps me motivated! And as a commenter above said, if they can spam my social media with pictures of their kids, they can handle some photos of me running.
