Laying Down the Law

I don’t know what my problem is. I’m tired. I hardly ever get tired. I am energy all day long and into the night. I am up early and ready to go. I am multi tasking and getting it done. Productive is my middle name. Shut up and be productive. But, these past two days I am dog tired.

Blame it on marathon training. Blame it on too many drinks in Vegas. Blame it on work. Blame it on being with the kids 24/7. Yesterday I was that mom that you don’t want to be. Laying down the law. Yelling (and I’m usually not a yeller). Setting down rules left and right. Removing privileges. Bottom line: taking out my irritability and fatigue on the kids. Not fair. I apologized. I’m human.

Last night I slept almost ten hours. I’m hoping that helps rev me up for my 16 miler in the morning. I love to run, but sometimes it makes me tired physically and mentally.

I’ll tell you what made me smile. In all of his summer time boredom, Sam created quite the contraption yesterday for Betty Sue, the guinea pig:

Is it just me or do you break down too?

Happy weekend. Get some sleep and don’t forget my giveaway.

  1. I'm going through the same thing too. Feel like I can't get up in the morning and then I end up running in the heat. UGH! If you figure it out, let us know. Going to try iron and B to see if they help....

  2. i've been really tired lately too. but i think it's because i'm not actually sleeping rather than something more unknown. but i definitely break down too. when training for boston i just didn't want to do *anything* anymore. not good.

hope you start to perk up!

  3. It's not just you...we all break down once in awhile. I don't think we'd be human if we didn't. I hope your 16miler went well!

  4. Relax - it is one - maybe two days - the kids will be fine and - heck- they can always tell the story about when Mom was a witch and turned crazy and was yelling - they understand - this isn't the real you.

We all go throught these periods. As I always say - you NEED to listen to your body. Obviously you needed some major sleep - giving into it was smart.

I hope your 16 miler goes great. I have a 8 miler scheduled for tomorrow and then will be biking 35 miles. Have fun.

  5. I tend to break down on the days I *don't* run. It's such a stress-release for me, that I feel very tense on the days I skip.

  6. Being home with the kids 24/7 is exhausting. I can't wait to go back to work. Rest. I'm sure it's only temporary (like, maybe until school starts again).

  7. Hiya, new follower here! I'm just a newbie runner, but I can relate to the doldrums you're feelings in regards to my cycling. I know I always feel better after I ride, but some days I just don't wanna and then I'm a...well...not a pleasant person to live with. Then the guilt kicks in and I'm even worse. Sometimes I just have to kick myself in the posterior and grumble and complain until I get my workout in, then I'm a much better person.

    It happens.

  8. I now feel inspired to make a similar contraption for my basset hound. She's a bit bigger (fatter) so I'm going to have to find a bigger truck. Possibly my boyfriend's racing bike?

Cute guinea pig. Cute dog. Cute kids. Love your blog every time I stop by,

  9. This too shall pass and everyone will survive; we have ALL been there as both moms and runners.

  10. Breaking down is human...we all do it and we all get through it. Hang in there...

  11. I don't sleep the greatest and when I don't, I tend to have meltdowns. I wish I could wave the magic wand and my kids magically would clean the house. Or cook. Or do laundry. Or empty the dishwasher. Or mow the lawn. Without me asking 40 times.

  12. I break down fairly regularly. But I have a 4-1/2-month-old and I blame it on hormones and lack of sleep. Today was a particularly bad day. Hoping tomorrow will be much better! BTW, you're only human, indeed; hope your kids were understanding and that tomorrow's better for you, too!

  13. Betty Sue is so spoilt. I love the creativity of kids.

  14. Love the guinea pig transporter lol.

And in answer to your question, I think we all have meltdowns from time to time!

  16. ugh! I'm having that day today!! My poor kids and husband...my husband is probably thankful that he had to leave to meet his brother for something. BUT now I have to take both kids to the grocery store because we have just run out of toilet paper. Gah!!

  19. Can Sam make our little Chuy a little trailer, too? I used to dispise GPigs but Chuy is SO cute and Betty is a doll!
Regarding breaking down...I sometimes tell my husband that I feel like a broken doll...sore, tired and falling a part. Thankfully, a good night's rest always puts me back together.
Hang in there, take your vitamins and take a BREAK!

  20. Oh my, I love Betty Sue! I sometimes get to a point where I know sleep/rest is all I need. Problem is I only realize it when I'm past that point already. Sounds like you do the same.

  22. The day before,or days before sometimes, a long run or race, I am not a happy person to be around. Training takes a lot of me, too. It's just par for the course. Hope you have a lower mileage/recovery week coming your way :)

That video was so cute, too! Love the pooch!

  23. Awwww, I was hoping that the dog would eat the hamster. Is that bad?

  24. Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm a finisher. I never quit a run. But my 18 miler this weekend turned into a 16.4 miler. I was beat. I don't know why, but I'm just not improving.

  25. Yup. On both fronts ... the running and taking it out on the kids. I nap, and apologize, and normally wake up in a better frame of mind.

  27. Yes. I think I'm stuck in the mode of 'teacher' instead of 'nurturer'. Hence not much blog action. I've lost my funny.
Maybe 13.1 miles down a highway - no kids in site - will get my mojo back.

  28. It just must be one of those weeks. I'm the same "Energizer Bunny" that you are and I get so mad at myself when the rare event happens that the energy has disappeared. The past couple of days for me have been exactly as you described. Lets hope we pull out of it soon.

As for the Betty Sue Mobile - ADORABLE! Love guinea pigs. I'm surprised she didn't try to jump out. Sam is quite the innovator. What do you think? Future rocket scientist?

  29. I'm reading your blog for the first time, from back to front, and I think I love you! Running, pooping, and you have a guinea pig? Yup, I love you!
