There Is Something For Everyone

Thanks for letting me vent yesterday and for playing along with me with your own vents. Man, you all had some wild things to say about being called names on eBay, cranky UPS workers, and getting hit with car doors. Damn, my life is boring.

To distract myself from unpleasant things (denial?), I’m thinking of 2013 racing goals. I am so annoyingly open and honest about most things, but I kind of keep my race goals idea close to my breasts until I am absolutely certain I am going after them.

Not being in training mode is a bit tough for me because I like structure and routine and knowing exactly what to do on a given day. But, not being in training mode can also be a good thing because then there is more time so surf the Internet for crap that I think other people need from me as gifts. I found such a gem today, by mistake, that I had to share it.

I have a friend who is a CAT LOVER. I think most people are in the cat or dog camp – although there may be some who like them both equally. I am a dog freak and find cats kind of bitchy, although there are some cats that are amazing (I had a few growing up).  By the way, if you have not seen this video about cats vs. dogs, go watch it HERE (thanks, Tom!). If you don’t laugh you haven't had enough wine tonight.

My friend like I said is a cat lover. So, today I was looking for a cat gift for her on Amazon and came across this book:

image

I wonder if that cat is sniffing his own butt hair?

At first I thought it was a joke. I mean, seriously, people make crafts out of their cat’s fur? But then I looked further and read the description:

Are your favorite sweaters covered with cat hair? Do you love to make quirky and one-of-a-kind crafting projects? If so, then it’s time to throw away your lint roller and curl up with your kitty! Crafting with Cat Hair shows readers how to transform stray clumps of fur into soft and adorable handicrafts.

No. No. No. It cannot be true. Is this for real? Yes, indeed.

Life can be very exciting when you just never know what you will come across on the Internet. From camel toe disguisers to crafting with cat hair, there is something for everyone. And this book totally brightened my day.

Are you in the dog or cat camp? Or both?

What’s one 2013 racing goal you have FOR SURE? Wild West Relay (or some relay) with nine others – it’s the only thing I’ve committed to so far. Also the Bolder Boulder 10K because we do it with friends and family every year. But, don’t fret. There will be many more!

What’s the most random gift you’ve ever received? Kenny Chesney underwear. That would have been cool if he’d worn them, but no such luck.

SUAR

  2. the cat hair thing reminds me of the show Oddities on the Science channel http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/15/oddities-tv-show-bad-for-petrified-cat-sellers_n_1151801.html

I have a race in October already! But I am looking at 2 halfs one spring and one fall which is an inaugural race.

  5. Can't really say if I'm a dog or a cat person since I've never had either one. I know, I know...pathetic.

I was supposed to be running the Rock n Roll AZ full next month but I've been struggling with injury so just the 1/2 for me. I'm thinking of running the Colorado Marathon in May instead but I'd better commit soon or it will sell out. Also, a friend is trying to talk me into the Without Limits triathlon series culminating in a 70.3 in September. With my marathon rescheduled I'm not sure that will happen this year. Plus it seems pretty darn intimidating!

My brother gave me a jar of clear marbles one year. And my husband. Neither one of us could figure out why.

  6. My first marathon, Cleveland! Never had a cat or dog, but lean more towards dogs.

  7. I admit it! I'm a cat lover. But dogs are okay too - some of them anyway.

So far, I'm definitely running the Cabot Trail Relay again and (I hope) the Bluenose International Marathon (here in Halifax). The Bluenose is tough - lots of nasty hills - so I'll need to train well if I want to get a PB - which I do, of course. (It's pathetic how predictably type A I am.)

    1. Hi Janice, I am from Halifax but now live in Ottawa. I am going back home to run the 10K again next year. Last year a large group of us went from the capital and a few ran the marathon, a few the half and I ran the 10. They all said it was the hilliest race EVER and no one got near there PB. Good luck and I will think of you as I try to conquere the 10 this year, last year it conquered me (North St got me).

  8. I'm allergic to cats and my eyes started to water just thinking about crafting with cat fur. Was it before or after they coughed up a hairball? Seriously, when I was in high school, my band director's wife used to take the fur from their lhasa apsos and weave things with them. Like scarves and ponchos (it was the 1970s).

    Ewww.

2013 is going to be my comeback year. I feel it! I'm planning on a half in May--the Wisconsin Marathon and half in Kenosha. The medal is a cheese wedge. People run in cheese head hats. It doesn't get any better than that!

  9. I just wrote a post today about being a crazy cat lady! I finally accept this title. HOWEVER! I will NEVER make crafts out of cat hair - I may have vomited a bit when I saw that!

I'm all signed up for the Disney World marathon and the Blue Ridge marathon. Oh and a half in my town. I'm looking forward to them!

  13. Dog camp without a doubt. Cat people are a little weird if that book's anything to go by.

  14. I actually had a family friend get me that book! I have not made any of the crafts or collected any of my kitty's hair to make the crafts. It was interesting to look through.

Run goals- Disney Princess Half for sure. Would like to do Women's Half Marathon in Nashville, Disney Wine and Dine, and maybe the Tower of Terror 10-miler again.

  15. Lol on the cat hair book, but yeah, we crafters are creative in our material usage.

I'm a dog girl, altho we had two cats until the scratched a huge cut into my oldest son's hand, then them ornery things HAD.TO.GO! Luckily, my in-laws took them in.

In 2013, i'm registered for the Rock -n Roll half already and I'd like to do at least 1 more (i did my first half ever this past Sept). I'd like to do a zombie run and a color run. I'm hoping to do an average of a race a month, but hate running in the cold (actually it's the waiting before a race that i can't stand) so, i'll skip Feb and double up somewhere else (a friend talked me into a jan run...we might not be friends after that...jk of course).

  16. Most random gift---a bowl for our Kitchen aid mixer from my MIL. I unwrapped the box, saw the picture of the bowl, and made a comment about her re-using the box (something she had previously said she never does).

One race for 2013...Feb 2nd Power up the Tower...a stair climb up one of our skyscrapers.

  17. Shut up! I seriously, no joke, bought the same book for my sister-in-law yesterday. She's big into crafting and they have two cats so there you go. I'm hoping she'll get crafty and make a sweater out of my husky's hair.

For 2013, my plan is to PR the crap out of the half. Hopefully. Most of 2012 was focused on my first marathon, and I just want to have some fun with running. I think I'm doing the Bluegrass half in March and the Wisconsin half in May.

  18. I am in both camps. I only had dogs, and three years ago my husband brought a cat home from hunting camp. Then last year we brought another one home. They are both very sweet and dog-like. My goal is to do a second marathon. I need to be in training mode or else I'm too lazy.

  19. The book itself is a funny find, but the fact that it has 4.5 stars and glowing reviews is something I find even more hilarious! Thanks for this, my BFF is totally getting this as a gag gift (thought I bet she will actually attempt to craft with it).

I am a "both" person... but only have a dog because my husband won't let me have a cat. =(

I have two for sure goals for 2013 - the Shamrock Half as my "come back" after injury and then the Richmond Marathon in November as long as nothing else breaks!!

    1. If you’re referring to the Shamrock Half Marathon at Virginia Beach, Va, that is my main 2013 running goal. It will be my first half marathon. Good Luck.

  20. I have no pets, but I prefer cats to dogs generally. I actually alike their aloof disinterested nature.

I’m going to run my first half marathon this year at the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA. Officially start my training on Monday.

And while I know I have received some eye-crossingly weird gifts over the years that I have immediately knew I would never use…I cannot think of a single one right now. LAME.

  21. I am a dog person but ended up with two cats and no dogs. My youngest son wated a cat; I tried to distract him with a guinea pig; then he fell in love with rats; I decided a cat wasn't so bad after all.

Best cat toy ever is the Bergan Turbo Track Cat Toy. The only complaint is that the cats played with it in the middle of the night and woke me up when we first got it. Now I am conditioned to the noice of the little ball being batted around the track and I don't notice it.

  22. Yes, there really is something for everyone! That is too much!

I am both a cat and dog person, although I'd say the dog wins out a bit.

Still haven't put together my races for 2013. I need someone to come do it for me!

  23. Thank you so much for mentioning my giveaway :) I can't believe people make stuff out of cat hair...Crazy!!! I have signed up for the Ogden Marathon and will probably be pacing at least 6 half marathons if not more. I would love to do Ragnar but I am a cheap skate and don't want to pony up the cash. I hope you get some good snow out of these upcoming storms, I hope we do too!

  24. I am a dog person all the way. Cannot imagine my life without a fuzzy little meat brick keeping me warm at night! Or wearing dog hair as an accessory.
My training goal for next year is to run the Philadelphia Broad Street run in under 10 10 minute miles in May.
Then my second goal is the September Philadelphia RnR which I was training for this year before I tore a tendon in my ankle and fractured a bone. Hopefully not running from august to now and hours upon hours of PT will get me back on the treadmill in January, then on the road by march.

  26. I'm dealing with sesamoiditis, which is like the dumbest running injury EVER because how do you stay off your feet? I mean, HOW? I guess if you're someone who lives a life of luxury you can stay off your feet easily, but I'm a teacher so staying off my feet is not an option, so my running goal is for my feet stop hurting so I can actually make running goals in 2013. Ahem. I guess I'm a little grumpy!
Oh, and dog person all the way. I've been reading all of your Lucky posts but unable to comment because I just lost my dog, too, and I haven't been able to put it into words how I feel.

  27. Dogs. Dogs, Dogs. I have 2. I also have 2 cats. I am a former cat hater. Still don't love them but I do my own. Half Marathon in February to get greased up for the year. Don't know what else. OKAY SUAR TELL US YOUR RACE SCHEDULE!!!

  28. I come from a cat family. My girl, Mabel, will turn 15 in April. I love her more than anything in this world!!! However, my aunt takes the cake in the cat lady department~ she has made cat fur balls for her cats (3 of them) to play with. I think I might have to get her that book!!!

I am planning on my first half in October with a few 5k/10k's over the summer. I have yet to run further than 5 miles, but I am getting there!!!! Back in May I could barely run for a minute and now can at least go 5k without stopping.

Time to go gather some cat hair...maybe I can make some running socks??

  29. I have cats, always have. They are easier to take care of and you can leave them alone. I love dogs though and would love to have one, but I'm gone from the house for 12 hours/day so don't think it's fair. So will have to stick to the cats for now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have two for-sure 5Ks that I do every year (Fireworks 5K and Great Pumpkin Race). I am *this close* to signing up for my first half-marathon in May (Pittsburgh), but I'm skerred. What if...?

I am a dog person but would tolerate a kitty because my daughter is SOOO adamant about wanting one. My husband is NOT a pet person - but he's going to convert. He's got a little longer to do so voluntarily and then someone is going to mysteriously drop one off on our doorstep.

  31. I signed up and started training on October 21st for the Beach2Battleship 140.6 mile Ironman distance triathlon held in October 2013. Have I ever run longer than a half marathon? Nope. Have I ever completed in an actual triathlon? Nope. Do I think I can do this? Yup. I decided one day that I didn't want to be that person who only talked about what they want to do one day. I wanted to be the person who actually did it.

  32. First of all, thank you for posting the link to the cat/dog video. I have a cat and a dog and I snort-laughed through the entire thing. It was spot-on. The fake reviews at Amazon for the cat book are the second funniest thing I've seen all day (again, thank you!). Fake reviews for ridiculous products are almost always wildly entertaining. Want more? Read the Amazon reviews of the Bic for Her pens.

My goal is to avoid racing in 2013 so I can get stronger and work on my pace and distance without feeling pressured. We'll see how long that lasts.

The weirdest gift I ever got was a small gift book type thing about people with lots of leisure time. It was something like, The Art of Doing Nothing. When it was given to me I left my job to adopt and stay home with toddler twins. The co-worker who gave it to me didn't have children so maybe she didn't know that doing nothing wasn't really on the agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for sharing that book. It gave me a good giggle and now I want to buy it for my sister, who I always call the crazy cat lady. It would be so appropriate.

My one FOR SURE goal is to actually TRAIN for a half marathon. I've done three so far, but didn't train for any of them and am interested to see if it sucks less when a real training plan is involved.

  37. You can find all kinds of shit on the internet. I'm telling it is is a total time suck if you don't come away with something to post to your Facebook account that isn't all Rainbow Shitting Unicorns.

Race goal is to get as close to 11 hours at IMTX as possible.

I can't think of the oddest gift I've ever been given. Must not have been to memorable.

  38. There is a really really good chance I'll be at the WWR as well. Hope to see you there decked out with cool things built with cat hair.

  39. OK ... just about peed my pants with the dog-cat video and the book. That is so totally my cat and I can just see myself making handicrafts with all the fur she leave about. As for dogs - I love dogs, too, but as one poster said, any dog that lived with me would be alone for 12 hours a day and that's not fair to the dog.
Random gifts: an ashtray MONTHS (what am I saying - YEARS) after we quit smoking and a plate in the shape of Santa Claus' head (wedding gift).
Racing goal : the Aquathlon at the local tri club. Do better than last year - especially swim faster!!

  40. Grew up with dogs and now have had a cat that needed a home!! will have to check out the video....sounds funny. All I have paid for is the TOUGH MUDDER and The Trans Rockies Run with a friend. That will be tough enough and will take all summer to train for. Next Year another Ironman!!! Beth I so think of you when I do this race and know you would love it and have to put it on your bucket list. The Moab trail half marathon or full if your up for the rope climbing part of it. IT IS A BLAST. It was my second time with a friend. Moab in November can be iffy on the weather but so worth a destination TRAIL RACE!!!

  41. I'm a cat person and have never owned a dog. Right now we have a rabbit that lives outside in a hutch. We (rather I) am thinking of getting a dog because my son is allergic to cats. I wonder how a dog and the rabbit would get along?

I've signed up for the VA Beach Shamrock Marathon. MARATHON! My first marathon. I've gone all public about it and am running it to raise awareness and funds for Lupus research. My niece was diagnosed last spring and I'm doing it to honor and love on her. I've started a blog about it reneesmarathonforlupus.blogspot.com Scary being all out of the closet about it... but it's keeping me accountable.

  42. I grew up with cats but much prefer dogs. We got a kitten this fall (took the dog for a walk and the kitten followed us home). I had forgotten how annoying cats are.

My 2013 Race Goal - Palmetto 200 - a 200 mile - 12 person relay from Columbia, SC to Folly Beach, SC. There's nothing better than 2 vans full of sweaty women to have a great bonding experience.
Random gift - my husband is the king of random gifts. Every year for Christmas, long after the kids have gone to bed, he gives me one last gift wrapped in shiny black paper. I am always embarrassed as hell but sometimes the prude needs a push. I can't help but wonder what will be in the black box this year... oh shoot - now I have the SNL Dick in a box song in my head.
