You Know You Are An Exercise Freak When…(plus a TON of pictures)

It seems I lost the bottom of my legs in Mexico.

So, we went to this amazing resort. You have to go there someday. I liked it because while we did an all inclusive option, many of the people there are “members” who own time shares. This made it less of your typical spring break touristy resort. Manageable crowds, great food quality. No fighting for chairs like last year.

Our villa was on the ground floor. This meant we didn’t really have an ocean view (even though the resort lied and said all rooms had an ocean view), but we opened right up to a gorgeous courtyard.

We’ve been to a few resorts south of Cancun (Puerto Moreles, Playa del Carmen) in the past, but this one was my favorite. Why, you ask? Well, it could have been the grilled grouper and guacamole at every meal, or the endless beach with sugary soft sand, or the margaritas made with just the right touch of tequila (=enough to make you wince) or even the spacious and well appointed rooms. But, no. The reason this resort was my favorite was how easy it was to train there. Yes, I am an exercise freak/geek.

First, there was this amazing fitness center, complete with Woodway treadmills. I had not experienced the Woodway before (sounds dirty), but I learned that once you go Woodway, you never go back. There is just one problem, however, and that is that that these treadmills cost $5,000 – $10,000. So, this indeed means I will have to go back to slumming it with the ancient crappy ones at my gym.

IMAG2879

Why is this treadmill so special? It’s known to be super smooth and quiet and to also absorb shock better than other treadmills (no I am not a spokesperson, I just really liked it). Easier on the joints, I suppose. I am not being a liar when I tell you that I felt like I could have run on this thing all day. I won’t go so far as to say it was like running on air, but it was kind of like running on air. Or, at least that was my experience. Ken was not so impressed but I think that was because he ran on it the morning with lots of tequila still streaming through his blood.

Secondly, there was this:

IMAG2841

I have never stayed at a hotel/resort where there was a gorgeous lap pool outside. I don't even like to swim, but I loved to swim here.

Third, there was this:

IMAG2888

Nature’s treadmill. Okay, I loved the Woodway, but I love running on the sandy beach even better.

photo 3

In total, I did five workouts over four days – 3 runs, 1 bike (on the spin bike) and 1 swim. I was proud that I fit that in around passing out (this is my favorite photo from the trip.

Now, let me tell you the other highlights. I literally ate my face off. Every morning for breakfast I had a huge omelet and a bunch of pastries. Lunch was grilled fish tacos, guacamole, Corona, and calamari. Around happy hour, we would go to the lobby bar for drinks and freshly made sushi. Dinner was more fish, octopus salad, fresh rolls and steamed veggies. I am not a huge dessert person (I KNOW!! What is wrong with me?), so I didn’t eat that stuff. But, Ken and the kids gorged on the self serve ice cream. I would show you pictures but I hate photographing my food (but love having people photograph me doing tricks on the beach).

Some other photos from the trip:

If you want to piss off your kids, then rent a “clown” car like this. It was fun putting 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 4 suitcases in here.

Me and my “little” girl:

Everyone needs to channel their inner gymnast, even when they’re 47.

Ken and Emma “playing” volleyball. Ken was burned to a crisp by this point, so he resorted wearing real clothes to the pool.

You know. Christmas card photo and all.

So, there you have it, Spring Break 2014. The “vacation” part of the trip abruptly came to a halt when our flight home was delayed, then someone threw up all over the back of the airplane (yeah, for an emetophobe like me, this was highly traumatic) and we landed in a bunch of snow. #firstworldproblems

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Hard to say. I loved our honeymoon in Greece. Also, Costa Rica a couple of years ago was amazing.
Have you ever tried a Woodway treadmill? I was a virgin until this trip.
Ever gotten sick/food poisoning while travelling? No. I’ve been pretty lucky with that one (knock on Woodway).
  1. Oh man, I did a study abroad in China in 1998. It was pretty much non-stop travelers diarrhea for the first month until I figured out where it was "safe" to eat. :-O
  2. You look awesome! Nice handstand too - no way I can do that anymore......
    Favorite vacation? Maybe Sydney, Australia when I was 23. Also loved Miami for our 10 year anniversary! Hopefully San Juan will make the list when I go there for the 70.3 next weekend!
  3. Sounds amazing!
    Our local YMCA has Woodways and I have used them many times….in uber-small town USA. I never knew they were considered THAT amazing - I guess we are just lucky!
  4. Your resort looks beautiful! I've done several all inclusive resorts in Jamica but never Mexico. Kudos for you getting in your workouts while on vacations! I had never tried a woodway tredmill. Maybe if the resort I stayed at offered one I would be on that instead of at the swim up bar:)
  5. I have tried a Woodway treadmill--at the university where my sister works they have them in the gym! I agree, it's the best treadmill I've ever run on.
  6. I have never tried a woodway treadmill but would LOVE too! That is so awesome that the resort had those. Looks like a beautiful and wonderful time!
  7. Best vacation I took was to the Mojave desert. I hiked up sand dunes, volcanoes, and Death Valley!
  8. I promise, in a non-creepy way, you have the best bikini body ever!
  9. That looks like a great resort. I've heard lots of good things about Playa del Carmen. We might need to check it out one of these days.
    We've been on lots of great trips, but always with little kids so it's hard to call any of them a "vacation" without chuckling and possibly gagging.
  10. Looks like a really great trip! We just got back from Florida--where the weather wasn't great for anything but running (it was cool).
    I have to admit, tho...not a fan of running on the beach.
  12. Our trip to Peru was our MOST incredible trip so far. We hiked the Inca Trail - four days - in to Machu Pichu. Incidentally, this is also the trip where I became the sickest. Sadly, not from food poisoning, but from altitude sickness. At 13,800 feet, "Dead Woman's Peak" is the highest point on the trail. I made the stupid decision to get up that peak faster than anyone else in our group. Which I did - but I didn't give myself enough time to acclimatize to such a high climb in such a short period of time. The result was massive altitude sickness. I threw up every day the rest of the time that we were on the trail - walking 17k on day three with no food in my stomach cause I couldn't keep anything down.
    But DESPITE that, Machu Pichu remains one of the most stunning places on this earth. And while you don't have to hike in to see it (you can take the bus up the mountain), I wouldn't have wanted to see it any other way than in my hot, sticky, hiking clothes.
  13. What a great trip! I love working out on vacation, too. I don't blame you for getting them in! I mean, who wouldn't want to run in paradise? Our best and only big trip has been San Francisco, but this summer we are taking the trip to end all trips.. Hawaii!! I can't wait!! We are so not travelers, but I feel like we will be able to call ourselves that after this!
  14. Love it! But why are you wearing shoes, while running on the beach?
    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because the last time I ran w/o shoes I got huge blood blisters.
  16. Hello! My name is Hannah and I just started a blog about my life living with chronic pain, and running through it! I would be grateful if you would go and check it out and tell everyone you know about it! I’m excited to share my story, spread awareness for chronic illness and inspire others! :)
  17. The place looks awesome! Did you have to sit through a timeshare pitch? Just curious as I'm reading reviews on the place and many people have mentioned it.
    1. No, we didn't...but I think that was partly because we didn't check in until later in the day - like at 7pm. They did call us a few times but we didn't answer. No one else approached us.
  18. My favorite place has been Germany I think in the fall time! That treadmill looks scary though from the side! I feel like I would trip or not fit on the belt. But the belt is probably longer in real life than it looks.
  21. The Royal Resorts are awesome...so beautiful and the food/staff are awesome. My parents have a timeshare at the Royal Sands; my hubby and I have joined them down there a few times. I'm glad that you had a good time!!
    I'd say my favorite vacation so far has been going to St Lucia for our honeymoon. Gorgeous, secluded beaches, great snorkeling, the Pitons, the rum drinks and the food!
    My gym old gym used to have a Woodway. It took a while to get used to using one.
  22. Our new club in town has a couple of Woodways. I'll admit I don't like them- not sure why exactly. They are supposed to be excellant for long-distance running, but I find I tire faster on them. Couldn't tell you why.....
    ReplyDelete
  23. Sadly, I have more experience with the Woodway treadmills at my gym at work than I do with resort vacations! But I love that treadmill. I thought it was a little weird at first, but now it's the only one I want to use when I'm there.
  24. How funny, we just arrived home yesterday from staying at the same resort. :) We loved it as well. I actually did not check out the hotel gym while we were there, I'm from Michigan and had to get outside in the warm weather to run!
    My favorite vacation would be our wedding in the Dominican Republic. ~25 of our family and friends joined us; we had a great time, and everything turned out amazing for the wedding.
  28. Write down all the exercises that you perform in a fitness diary. Make a note of which exercises you did, including the inadvertent workouts you were sure to get during the day.
