Getting Laid at the Bolder Boulder 10K

When we last met at this blog, I was debating whether to race my 10K in the morning or run it with son, Sam (12). There was a definite majority opinion from the blog world.

Okay, okay. You talked me into it. I ran with Sam. And I’m glad I did. He was trying to beat his time of 59:00 from last year and he really needed some encouragement out there. Really, if I were to die tomorrow, I know I’d be happier I ran it with my boy.

I decided since I wasn’t racing, I should dress up.

It was actually Emma’s idea. I swear. Sam wasn’t too thrilled since I’d be his running partner. He took one look at me and said:

Sam: Seriously, you’re not wearing that.

Me: Yep.

Sam: You can't. That’s just not going to go well.

Well, in your face. It did go well.  We were about .1 mile down the road before the first frat boy yelled, “Hey you got laid!” Hahhaha. I’ve never heard that one before. Sam said, “I think he was talking to you.”

Here’s at the start. Dr. Oz was right above me. He shot the gun. We discussed open heart surgery and poop cycles:

Pre-race prep:

All the shoes…a family that runs together still argues and gets on each other’s nerves…

The kids scored PRs from last year. Sam = 57:00; Emma = 1:07. Not too shabby.

I only run this race for an excuse to drink beer at 8:30 a.m. It’s my favorite past time. How did you spend your Memorial Day?

  1. That must be so great to run with your kids! There don't seem to be as many family races here in the UK - I wish there were more.

Great times for both your kids - well done them!

  3. What a terrific day - I love your outfit! Some of my favorite races have been run with my oldest son, but I have *maybe* one more year before he's too fast for me to catch him. :-)

  4. Wish I could have been at the race! I didn't trust myself to "just have fun" (marathon on Sunday... racing today would be not okay) so I worked instead. Maybe a beer is still in order though! Great times!!

I can't wait to do it again next year. Boulder is such an awesome town.

  8. You lucky duck!! I can't wait until my younger two boys are older. Maybe I will get a runner out of one of them hahaha!
Love that you ran with your family and that you wore a costume! Its good for them to be, or at least think they are, humiliated once in a while. Especially tween boys!
Wearing a costume at a race is on this years to do list!

  15. So nice you opted to run with your son. Great times for both of your chitlins! You looked so festive and utterly embarassing for your son. IMO, it was worth running with him just for that reason alone. Embarassing your kid is one of a parents main jobs!

  29. What an awesome day! I think you made the right choice to run with him.... although I do understand the pull both ways.

I love seeing other families that run together. I can't get my wife out there (yet) but both all three of my kids run with me. Our next race as a family will be in less than 2 weeks. Both my daughters (16, 14) will be running the 5k with me (one of them (14) will be beating me for sure) and my son (8) and I will be running the 1k like last year.

What did I do on Memorial day? I did a Tweetup 6 mile trail run with 4 others that I met on twitter. It was my first trail run ever, and first Tweetup ever as well - very cool and I even got home in time for a late breakfast with my family (since none of them would get up early enough to go with me)

  30. Haha! You two look great! I love the costumes. I'm glad that you "just ran" with your son, I'm sure it made his PR extra special (even though he was embarrased to run next to hula mom).

  33. I've really been embracing most everything with the attitude..."Life's too short to...(fill in the blank)" And that race was def one of those moments! Life's too short to miss an opportunity to run with your son! LOVE the outfit! Hoorah for PR's!

  35. I love the pictures:) It looks like you and your family had a blast! I wish I could talk my entire family into doing at least a 5K with me:)

  36. I'm totally gunna have a family that runs together. That's several years down the road, though. I spent the wknd cleaning and preparing to go on VACA. WOOOO!

  37. Emma ran a 10k in 1:07?! And Sam in 57 mins?!That's amazing!!! I feel like a Rock Star when I can do it in under 1:20!!!

You are my hero! I have no idea how I could get my fam to run with me. I just keep praying about it. As for Memorial Day: We spent it hanging out with friends and eating, of course! It was awesome!

  38. That is such a fun race. I think the same frat house cheered as I ran by, maybe because my booty shorts were slowly turning into Victoria's Secret style underwear!

Congrats on the PRs!! I struggled for my 58 minutes, but met Ryan Hall later on at it made my day!

  39. My son just started showing some interest in jogging. It's hard to keep him interested in something, but I'm trying to fuel his interest without putting any pressure on him. Hopefully I'll be able to run a race with my kids someday. Looks like a blast!

  40. I love the shoe picture!!! Great family memories. Your kids are too freaking adorable!

  45. how did we miss THAT?!?!?!
I, too, loved running with my boy.
Just got home and he is still bragging that he 'beat me' - finished something like, "If it's cool with you I'm going to finish the race on my own." We said, "Go for it!"
Silly kid acts like he wants to race me or something...
