The Race Is On!

It is October 25 and it is freezing and snowing.

IMAG0895

I like the idea of snow because then I can cuddle up on the couch and drink tea by the fire. But, the reality is I never do that anyway because I am too busy going to the gym and looking like a dork (Probably because I’m taking a hideously blurry picture while trying to squat and hold the ball against the wall. Multi tasking at its best). Look! I am sitting in a chair, but not really sitting in a chair!

IMAG0897

Maybe why I've never done strength training is it is hard. I don’t understand how I can run a marathon, but trying to hold a sumo squat with a 30 lb weight for 45 seconds makes me want to cry and crumble onto the floor. And, my legs shake so badly that people probably think I have some kind of disorder. Or, that I am detoxing.

Then I get on the treadmill because I want to get in some cardio, but my legs are so tired, they don’t want to move. Some chick gets on the treadmill beside me and I have no clue why but I feel like I have to race her. Why? Why do I even care? If you’ve ever driven with me in the car, you know I do the same thing there. Life does not have to be an imaginary race, but I make it that way.

And, I have to say that all of this trail running/climbing I’ve been doing has made my thighs explode with muscle. I do know that is a good thing, but my jeans are tighter than…well, than…I can’t say. Because if you are trying to say something is tighter than something it usually ends up being naughty and I’m not going there. Which is funny because I always go there.

Okay, okay. My jeans are tighter than…a nun’s…something?

Speaking of gaining weight and muscle, here is someone who seems to be shrinking. I did not even know who this was when I saw the picture:

Going Rogue sure has changed her.

The scoop is that she is writing a fitness book with her family. Apparently she went from 140 lbs. to 105 lbs. Must be all that moose huntin’ and salmon fishin’ with Todd.

Advice needed: If you are going to do strength training and cardio in one workout, which do you do first? Today I did strength first and it made my run tiring. But I’m afraid if I run first I will be tired to do the other stuff.

Do you think S. Palin looks better before or after? I think she looks a bit too thin and unhealthy in the first picture. I’d like to see her somewhere in between. Because I know she really cares what I think.

Do you play the race game on the treadmill?

Finish this sentence: My jeans are tighter than…the pastor’s girdle at a pancake breakfast.

  1. I always do a light run then strength train. The run warms you up but doesn't fatigue you enough to affect form. Just as you wouldn't do two hard runs back to back, there's no need to wear out on one so you can't do the other. What strength training lacks in cardio conditioning/calorie burn, it makes up for in after burn.

  2. I love your page!!!

If you are trying to lose weight, do cardio first. Otherwise, do strength training first. Don't worry, you will get stronger on the treadmill after weights!

I do think Sarah is a little too thin now.

I do play the race game on the treadmill, much to my chagrin!

  3. Run first for 20-30 minutes to warm up.

And I totally get the thigh muscle thing... Here, I was all losing weight and getting thin, but my THIGHS! It's a whole size different from my waist.

  4. I do strength first then cardio. That way you run out the DOMS that usually follows a hard strength session. The first little bit usually sucks but it gets better, I promise.
Sara Palin looks downright haggard in that last shot!! Scary,
I always race the person on the treadmill beside me. I can't help myself. :)

  6. I always (ha!) do the strength training first because otherwise I have no motivation to go on my run.

As for S.P. No comment. That's the nicest thing I can say.

  7. Sarah palin looks like maria shriver. i say you can never be too thin or too rich!

  8. I've always done just 5-10 mins on the treadmill as a warmup, then a full strength routine, and then back for about 20-30 mins of cardio.

  9. Haha I love this post! Like seriously. Everything about it. I feel the same way about strength training!!

  10. Yeah I admit I compete all the time, even in strength training...yeah, I can lift that heavy weight no problem...

The worst was when I caught called out during post-race beer drinking. I pointed out to one of my teammates (who has a reputation for drinking an entire keg after Shamrock half marathon) that I had drunk more of my beer than her! I was quite proud of myself until she pointed out that I was still competing!

  11. Jeans?.....sorry, 85 degrees so it's shorts and flip flops...but I luv the snow pic. I couldn't even get half way through Sarah's 1st book, so I don't think I'll be buying her fitness book

  12. I do strength training first and then cardio.

Sarah Palin in that last photo is horrifying and it makes me nauseous to think she's writing a fitness book looking like that.

If you are next to me on the treadmill, the answer is "yes", we are racing. I may have gone too far with the crepe paper across the front of the treadmill though. "I WIN" WOOOOOOOooooooo

  14. Shut up and strength train, that's what I do! heh. No, seriously. Like on days when my energy is not so good. I'll strength train before a run, because I know I wont do it after. (and I sure as hell wont shirk on the run itself) Sometimes I'll strength train after running, if I'm feeling like Supergirl. But lately, I've only been doing it on the days I don't run. I thought the seasonal weather change would give me an energy boost with the cooler weather. Not so. Maybe that's because it's still too friggin warm here in NY. (in my opinion anyway)

I think Sarah looks ok. Gotta be careful with slimming down, it can make the face look gaunt on some folks.

  15. My hubbs runs and then lifts. I do it the other way.

    Palin looks a bit thin.

  16. Did you see this article: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/25/why-women-cant-do-pull-ups/ Made me feel a whole lot better about my lack of strength.

Sarah Palin? Not a fan. Maybe she'll keep getting thinner and she'll just blow away...

    2. Yeah, I was going to say that I'd like not to see Palin at all. But that's just me.

I am really inconsistent with my strength training. It's weird, I can be totally on point with my running, but strength training? Eh, not so much.

  17. Ahhhhhhh, Palin! I'm pretty sure she spends very little of her time here these days, good riddance! She's looking... radiant lately.

  22. I always need to know how fast the people on the treadmill next to me are going and if they are going faster than I am, I make sure to go longer. Sick...I know.

  23. I do cardio first unless I'm doing legs then I do those first and suck it up and deal with it for the cardio part of things.

  25. I usually do cardio first to warm up the muscles. I don't race with the person on the treadmill next to me, but I do like to glance around and gloat if I'm faster. Sarah Palin looks awful, so thin.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I usually do cardio before.

Wow, Palin looks terrible. Just add oversized lip implants and a botched nose job, and she could be part of the real housewives crew.

  27. I've heard a saying that when you get older you have to decide between "face or body." SP has decided on body at this point in time. I think she looks good in the middle. The only one I've seen pull both off is Tosca Reno (clean eating.) But I don't know if she's had any work done.

  28. Since I don't watch Fox News, I had no idea Sarah was that skinny. And yes, she's too skinny. Wouldn't be a bad thing if she wasted away. Ok, shouldn't have said that!

I always run first, strength train after. But that's b/c of course, I don't want my legs tired out on my run. Probably the wrong way to do it, but always a runner first!

If you think that is bad, what is you think about all the LUNATIC conservatives talking about 'legitimate rape' and children being conceived from rape being God's plan and a gift. Or, I love this gem, Slavery was the best thing that could have happened to Afican Americans. Saying someone could waste away is nothing compared to that.

  29. I've read you should do strength training first and then run so it teaches your muscles to perform while fatigued. But it sucks so I run first and then lift.

  30. Yikes first off I think Sarah Palin looks horrible...I always found her so attractive and fit (even though I don't like her) but thinks she looks terrible now. I haven't started my strength training yet but will do it after I think. It's hard enough for me to climb on the treadmill at night to do my run, I know for sure, I'd never do it if my legs were that tired.

  31. Being bashed and lied about and your family slandered by the insane LUNATIC liberals can stress anyone out. so her weight loss might be due to all the BS she puts up with from the desperate democrats. She's a class act in my opinion. and I happen to thing we have WAY bigger issues to deal with than whether or not people think she looks good thinner or fatter. gimme a break.

  32. Funny post :) cannot believe Palin is still milking her fame, oh wait yes I can. 105 pounds is tiny!! As for strength training, I don't usually like to do it at the gym unless its the body pump class because there are WAY too many guys hogging the machines. I do prefer it to running sometimes because there is a rest period. But you're right, that moment when you're shaking is quite the sight for onlookers.

  33. Sara looks like she needs a 5 piece fried chicken meal.

yes, I race others on the treadmill. Game on.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Totally play the race game at the gym. Love it.

Totally not a Sarah Palin fan, but eek, girlfriend needs to stop losing weight. She looks unhealthy. She looked fit and healthy before.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am not a fan of Sarah but I always thought she was very attractive, but not now. she looks sick and being so thin also ages her.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Sarah Palin looks like a meth head in the skinny picture. She needs a nice juicy cheeseburger.

For the workout advice...I do what is more importnat to me at the time first. So when I'm training for triathlons, I do my cardio first. When I'm on the off season and trying to build shape/lose weight/tone, I do the lifting first. I'm convinced that doing cardio on tired muscles helps my speed in the long run (I'm sure it's some kind of scientific fact...) and my mental game. There. My $0.02.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I race everyone. If I'm in a 5K event, I pick out my person and try to not let that person cross the finish line before I do. It happened once. The treadmill is the same way. Only it's I finish before that person no matter if they started after me. I'm going faster than them; I'm pushing up the incline. They are knocking on Heaven's door when it comes to me.

Okay too much? Yeah, I thought so, too.

  38. A few times, after I started a cool down run (after running 10+ miles on the tm, yest tm), the person (guy or girl) would say, "man, I was having trouble keeping up with you for that long". Funny and flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I used to do cardio then strength train. Now I try to have a cardio day and then a strengthening day (then repeat the cycle). I've found a rest between running days is needed. Sometimes I will do both in one day, but now I strengthen then run. I've found my joints feel better with strong muscles around them.
I moved to Colorado 4 months ago and lost my 10 lbs of newlywed weight! But my thighs are large and jeans are slightly snug. Guess trail running and mountain climbing has it's effets

    ReplyDelete
  40. I always do the cardio first, then the strength, but not more than 20-30 minutes of sustained pace cardio. No HIIT training and strength in one day. Too old and too tiring for me.
I ALWAYS race the person next to me on the treadmill, unless it's the guy in our gym that runs 10 miles in like 4.2 minutes. He's insane, sweats buckets, stinks to high heaven and i only get on that treadmill if it's the only one in the gym left open.
Finish the sentence - a nervous virgin.

  41. I have been biking all summer ( and fall) and my thighs are big... and they weren't small to begin with. Fell in love with biking over running. But throwing walking in there too. I do weights after cardio- and that's 3 times a week. Hard to say about Sarah, it may just be a bad picture.. I am near 60 and I think older women look better with a little weight on them. I could argue I have too much, but i'm working on it.!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've heard that you're supposed to do strength training first because if you do cardio first you use up all your stored energy and don't have any left to build muscle with. I agree though that I would rather do cardio first. Running on sore legs takes too much effort.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't get the smack talk about Sarah. I really don't. Why the resentment? I don't get it. She's a fellow female runner, mother of a child with special needs, a wife, a hard worker, etc. Thin or not, I just don't know why you want to smash a woman for no reason. I suspect you didn't vote for her in '08 and disagree with her politically, but that was 4 years ago. She's not on the ticket now and I have a feeling no one would discuss Michelle Obama's butt on other running sites. Keep it classy ladies.

    1. You're totally right. There is no reason to go so negative as some commenters have done. I have seen some women of that age start to get a little bit thicker around the middle, so then they kinda panic and go the other way, IE Maria Shriver and vice-presidential debate moderator Martha Raddatz. It's a matter of finding that middle, healthy ground. I think SP is too skinny, though.

  44. Strength first because I'd rather be tired on a run than drop a weight on myself.

  45. You know what I amazed at? That you, the writer of this blog, (don't know your name, sorry.) would even put a woman up and ask people to judge her weight and appearance. Would you have done that with an overweight person?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow, I'm sorry. I did not mean to open up a whole can of worms. Her weight loss has been in the press a lot lately and I was simply curious about what people thought. I wasn't trying to be judgmental or to make a political statement. I apologize if it came off that way.

  47. On my strength training days, which I enjoy more than cardio, I do 10 minutes of cardio for a warm up and 10 for a cool down.

Sarah looks too thin right now me, but if she is happy and healthy, good for her. I lost a significant amount of weight and I got comments about losing too much. Its annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dear ShutUpandRun,
It was very obvious to me that you find her to be an easy target (I guess because you disagree with her politically...stupid reason if you ask me), you thought most everyone who read your blog would agree with you, and I think you absolutely intended to invite "snarky" comments about someone you disagree with politically.
Now, the problem is, not everyone jumped on your bandwagon to say unkind, unnecessary, and judgmental things about another woman. And you got called out. Would you have done that to ANY other woman (most notably, Michelle Obama) and invite everyone to discuss how chunky she looks despite being someone so interested in what our kids eat? And then act shocked when people let you know that it's not cool? Think about it next time you go for a long run.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You anonymous Republicans sure are touchy. I don't think SUAR's inclusion of Sarah in her post was meant as a political jab. This is a fitness-related blog, and a lot of discussion of bodies (and their functions, heh heh) takes place here.

    2. I have to agree that I don't think that SUAR's inclusion of SP was a political jab. My question is why is it OK to question a celebrity's weight loss. If a celebrity gains weight is it because she is finding "what's comfortable for her/him" but a loss is considered she is unhealthy?

  53. Well, that was certainly different.

If I was going to do strength training and cardio in one workout, I'd probably detour to the peanut butter and honey sandwich aisle to be emotionally prepared. I'd probably mix it up, sometimes cardio first, sometimes strength, also depending depending on if I was waiting for it to stop snowing or something.

At risk of inciting anonymous, I never got Ms Palin. As a guy I didn't think she was attractive, then or now. As a Canadian I certainly had no interest in deciphering her Palinisms.
