Ways I Am “Bad” and So What?

Do you do things that are “bad” for you or are considered “not following the rules?”

“Bad” is a subjective term. To some people having a meth lab and being high all the time is not “bad.” Yet, to others, eating a non-gluten free cookie with real sugar versus cane sugar is a crime punishable by death (Hello Boulder Whole Foods shoppers!)<- that’s a joke. Don’t send hate mail.

These are the things I do that are “bad” for me according so some standards, and not so bad according to others.

  • I have a drawer in my nightstand that right now has three boxes in it: Dots, Mike ‘n Ikes and Hot Tamales (if you haven’t tried the 3 Alarm Hot Tamales, you must. They actually make your eyes water. Consider yourself Double Dog Dared). So what ? Pretending it is Halloween every night keeps you young.

  • I don’t always eat protein 30 minutes after a workout (gasp! But, I try to eat it within an hour). So what? All that candy from the night before should tide me over.
  • I drink 2 cups of coffee per day.  So what? It has antioxidants and might make me remember more when I get old. What did I just say?
  • I buy my second cup of coffee everyday (that totals $600 per year and I think I’m going to throw up) So what? I could be spending $1,200 per year if I drank fancy drinks (triple shot mocha cappuccino no whip 140 degrees in a recyclable cup with 90 karat gold flakes sprinkled on the top)
  • I drink wine. Even while training (well, I don’t mean while on a training run, but during a training cycle).  So what? I know wine has some health benefits, right? And, it makes you nicer to people.
  • I drink my wine in front of the TV. So what? Some TV is so bad these days you need wine to go with it
  • I drink my wine in front of the TV with either popcorn or pita chips or something else salty. So what? When you are watching the Biggest Loser and everyone is eating yogurt and drinking water I get hungry (for them)
  • I watch reality TV (Survivor, the Biggest Loser, the Bachelor, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) So what? I think it’s good to learn that there are people richer, braver, bigger, snottier, prettier and meaner than you are.
  • I rarely wash my yoga mat and when I was preparing for bow pose yesterday I was forced to smell my mat (forehead to mat and all that). Ick. You can put it in the washing machine. Did you know that? I’ve done it once. So what? It’s my sweat and stink, no one else's.
  • I do a quick bath with Huggies wipes after a run if I have to hurry and get to a doctor’s appointment, the PT, whatever. So what? They’re doctors for God’s sake. If they can’t handle a bit of stink they are in the wrong field.
  • I run with scissors (but I keep them in my fuel belt) <- that was just a bit of running humor.

Glad I got that off my chest!

Condemn me for the above if you must. But, I do a lot of things “right” too. Like eat my fruits and veggies, get sleep (whenever hot flashes aren’t in town), exercise, call my mom, read good books, cross train, shave my armpits, hug my kids, write trash on my blog and stare at the bobblehead of myself because it makes me feel important:

What do you do that might be “bad” for you? Do you care?

  2. You are hilarious! And now I want a glass of wine to go with dinner!

  3. I'd be such a cranky bitch without wine. It's the healthiest thing I can do for myself and my poor family!

  4. The 4th cup of coffee...
    The 3rd Glass of Wine...
The 10 Duo's (Ya know those tasty sugar free mints) I am addicted to while driving...
Like you, I eat healthy Keep my calories within 1500 and run so that I can continue to have those "bad" for you things. So No! I do not care.
Thanks for being honest. It's refreshing.

  5. I drink diet soda with splenda!

  6. This list makes me feel so much better about myself! :)

It's not what I do that's bad, but what I don't do: crosstrain. I'm working on making that better...

  7. I read recently that a germ present in even miniscule amounts of fecal matter from cats can lodge in your brain and ultimately impair your judgment in ways that are nearly impossible to predict or prevent. In spite of this, I let my kittens walk on my face when I am too tired to stop them. Does this count?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hahaha!Yes this does count. Can you video tape yourself when you have one of those moments where your judgment is impaired due to the fecal matter?

      Delete
    2. Sure! Although there might be a lot of footage to sort through, since now every time I exhibit poor judgment I'm going to yell, "Sorry! I can't help it, it's the cat poo bugs in my brain!"

    3. OMG! I'm laughing so hard it hurts right now. I'm the same way with my cats though. LOL! Good stuff...

    4. I love Hot Tamales!! I did'nt know they had 3 alarm. DARE ACCEPTED....

  8. I could tell myself that I’m doing soooo great because I don’t do so many of the “bad” things you listed. I don’t have sweet tooth. I don’t like coffee. I don’t watch television. But as in all things, I can trump any good I’m doing with the quality (not quantity) of my bad habits. I drink a tad too many beers from time to time. And while I know that the running is eventually going to end it…I still smoke cigarettes. Dammit! Maybe I’ll switch to Hot Tomales.

  9. I go to Whole Foods and stock up on all sorts of healthy things--spirulina, chia seeds, sprouted grain flour, tofu, kale, quinoa. Then I go home and eat prepackaged cookies from Trader Joe's.
Thanks for reminding us it's okay to be "human"! :)

  10. Sometimes, I put butter on my toast, instead of peanut butter.

Funny thing is, when I write it down, suddenly it doesn't seem so bad anymore. In fact, it seems rather hilarious that I work myself into such a guilt trip over it. So I guess I should stop mentally beating myself up over it, huh?

Oh, and I eat brownies. Sometimes as a mid-morning snack. So what??? I LOVE BROWNIES.

  11. I drink soda about once a week, and eat Korean instant noodles about once every 2 weeks. (Yes, they have to be Korean because those are the only ones worth eating!)

  12. I am not gluten free, dairy free, meat free, or anything else free. And I love coffee. And wine. And chocolate. And lots of times I feel like I'm the only blogger left out there who falls into these categories, so thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Me! Me too! I fall into those categories. Loudly! Proudly! Especially the wine. And coffee. Not to forget the chocolate.

    2. You are not alone by a long shot! I eat LOTS of wheat (love my bread and pasta) full of gluten and dairy and meat (mmmm, bacon). Overall I eat pretty healthy, but NO foods are off limits, and that includes things like Twizzlers, hot dogs, and beer at a ball game, cake and ice cream for birthdays (it's somebody's birthday somewhere every day, right?), and pretzels. Yes, thank you for being honest and real!

    3. Me four, or whatever!! I love all this stuff. Wine, coffee, candy (also adore hot tamales), Spam (in Spam musubi), butter, cake (my favorite food!), etc. etc. I could probably be skinnier and therefore faster, but it's just not worth it to me.

      Delete
    4. No you are not alone in the least! Sometimes I have too much blood in my wine and coffee system and need to correct that. lol Any time I've tried to go totally "free" of anything I drove myself off the deep end wanting it more.

  13. I grew up in an ultra-conservative, overachieving, southern family. I pretty much feel guilty about every single thing I do.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That was pure awesomeness.
BTW...I think wine should be allowed on training runs.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Only scrolled down to the comments to say exactly that! It would certainly make the runs more interesting, right? :)

  15. I drink more than 2 cups of coffee per day, I eat at LEAST 3 desserts a day (that is not an exaggeration), I rarely stretch before/after running, I eat out WAY too much, and I always forget to wash my running hats so they STINK! Yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like that question.. I eat a ton of desserts each day.. I don't always eat veggies and I love fried foods.

Before I discovered running and lost 50 pounds, I'd only drink diet Pepsi.. I'd go through at least 2-2 liter bottles per day. Now I don't drink Pop, but every once in a while I have a full calorie root-beer.

    1. Yes! I ate an Its-It last night while watching B.L. Oh, and I love to watch Intervention with a nice glass of wine!

  18. I bake so I can taste-test the batter. I don't eat the cakes though so I'm sure it balances out. And I let the dog lick the plates before I put them in the dishwasher. It saves on water-wasting by rinsing them so I justify it by calling myself an environmentalist.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I drink tea sweetened with Splenda. A lot of tea. I'm from the South and I like sweet tea. I drink so much tea in a day that if I used sugar, I would have no calories left to eat...even after running. When I do to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I always eat a handful of something (goldfish, raisins, cashews, cake, M&M's...whatever is handy).

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm sitting here eating right out of the ice cream container because I was too tired & lazy to scoop some out into a bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Except for the sugar in the night table, and your choice of TV, we are two of a kind. Especially as far as the wine is concerned. I'm sure that thrills you to the core.

  22. Double chicken cutlet with chipotle sauce and thick avacado slices on a hard roll
    1 scotch, 1 bourbon, 1 beer
    Kit Kats, Twixes, Lindors
watching 3 nfl games each Sunday of the season
    Procrastination, day dreaming, flirting
    Kettle chips,cheetos, cashews
Make deals with God and bank onbeing forgiven if Idont keep my sideof the deal
    Unpunctuated sentences.

  23. I'm so bad. Today I skipped a run in favor of a nap, which seeing as I'm getting sick was a good move. And I committed the mortalist of sins...i ate taco bell. Yep, I ate that fake food. And i LOVED every minute of it. Only eating kate, vega smoothies and quonia is no fun. I'm just as bad as you are sister.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like bread. Sometimes I make awesome foccacia and eat half the pan while it is still warm. So there.

    ReplyDelete
  25. LOL at the wine comment...that gave me a mental image of a runner with a water bottle full of wine. My fiance's nightstand top drawer looks just like yours, mostly because I keep stocking him up on candy so I can sneak some. :) I definitely eat more snack food and packaged food (gobs of granola bars) than I should, but you can't eat perfectly healthy all the time.

  26. I do most of those things. Except the yoga mat. I can't stand yoga and if I did do yoga, I probably would just sweat on a borrowed mat and then give it back.

Right now I'm regretting the decision to try "Moonshine".

  28. Wine and chips and guac. A lot! I just started training this week for my next 1/2 (going for sub 2hr) so I am cutting back to 3 days a week. I built my training schedule around the nights I wanted to be able to drink wine!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like a Diet Coke after a long run ... my bones haven't fallen apart. Yet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really like my food with salt in it. It may not be the best thing healthwise, but I don't care.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I enjoy a little coffee with my flavored creamers each morning. It's a nasty habit, but I love the sugar and caffeine lift and the warm drink. It's the highlight of my day!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Me too! Sometimes I crave my morning coffee with creamer-or the other way around- before I even go to bed!

  32. Bad habits I don't care about:
1.Mac N Cheese, I love it, If I buy the white cheddar I can pretend it's not toxic powder I'm dumping on my noodles
    2. I'm also not ____-free on anything, unless it's free stuff, then I'm all about free
    3. Not a soda or coffee drinker, but I do drink fruit juice. Pretty much any chance I get.
    4. I found Food Lion brand of Girl Scout cookies, so now I eat them year round one box per sitting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I LOVE it!!! I love artificial sweeteners and my pre long run routine always includes a sugar free red bull....there I said it! It's so freeing!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gluten, dairy, sugar, wine (and other assorted cocktails), chips, red meat, chill in front of TV (most evenings), - the list could go on. Loved seeing your list and the comments of so many others - sometimes I feel like the only runner who still isn't on the totally healthy eats band wagon all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bahhahahhahaa - I laugh at people (you). So what, not in front of them, just behind their backs.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I eat white bread. And pasta. With storebought sauce (sometimes)(don't tell my Italian grandmother - it could start a family feud). I drink red wine with dark chocolate AT LEAST once a week (that's a lot of antioxidants, right there). I drink coffee (but I'm giving it up for Lent, so that might be over). I use too many parentheses (obviously). We have dessert with every meal - sometimes even breakfast (this changed for me recently). My husband got me a Kindle fire for Christmas so I could watch videos on the treadmill without going blind using my iphone and now I'm hooked on Downton Abbey. Why didn't anyone tell me?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  37. If this is what your "bad" stuff is, I'm scared to know what you'd think of my list! In my opinion, none of these things is really that bad at all when you think about the way the majority of people live!

I eat cookies for second breakfast, eat Rainbow Chip frosting straight out of the tub, won't eat a burger without fries or a pizza without a big tall Coke (did I mention I drink Coke and eat junky food?), only clean the kitchen when it gets REALLY dirty, never empty the vacuum canister (I make Husband do that), am addicted to ID TV, and take a nap every time I can squeeze one in. I also hardly ever wash my bras (it's not like my boobs sweat) and can polish off an entire 6 pack of Ukrop's cupcakes in one sitting.

That's only the tip of the iceberg.

    1. Thank you, Kathryn! I was starting to think that my list was actually awful. I'm happy to see so many people who do "bad" things, but was really happy to see someone who is almost as bad as me...I say while debating when to eat the chocolate bar that is in my sweater pocket.

  40. I order an extra large pizza with cheesy bread every Friday night. My husband and I eat the whole thing before we got to bed. Shut up.

  41. I go to school 2 nights a week and purchased cafeteria points (one visit = point) so that I don't have to worry about starving in my 3 hour night classes. Once you're in, it's all ya can eat. Though I am in the Info. sci. program, it does not hurt that my college is very well known for its culinary program, and in particular, the baking program. So I often use my point to eat a sensible dinner followed by three or four desserts.

It's driving me nuts. I feel like a little kid. But it hasn't affected my weight (yet) because I am marathon training, but after March, I have to be reeeeeally careful. Right? Right???

  43. My bad habits truly outweigh my good habits. My running obsession is about the only healthy thing I have going for me. Oh well.....at least it's one thing to combat some of the bad.

  45. I make my coffee and add 6 (yes, 6!) sugar cubes to it, plus a bit of flavored creamer and milk, sometimes I use my daughter's whole milk. I also have a McDonald's (gasp) egg mcmuffin meal or bacon egg and cheese biscuit meal with a large Diet Coke for breakfast 2 times a week, sometimes 3. Goodness, no wonder I'm not losing any weight.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I drink diet Coke. Lots of it. I don't admit this to many people, but since you asked...

I make fun of this mom at school in my head because she doesn't work & yet shows up for school in a blazer or jacket & her hair perfectly done. I wonder why she's so insecure that she can't just throw on a sweatshirt like me.

If I have to fart, I fart. Last night was a bit much after hummus. Use your imagination. If I'm on a run, I do look around to make sure no one will hear me.

    I love your bobble head!

    ReplyDelete
  47. And I had to pee last night during speed session. I left the group & went behind a storage unit. Why is this acceptable for men but not ladies?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't do things that are bad for me anymore. I used all my "bad" up :(

    ReplyDelete
  49. you and your audience are hilarious!

Now you got me thinking about all the things that I want to go do!

Must get a hefty candy and booze stash:-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. OK, I admit to:
    1. Drinking wine and not just a little wine (c'mon this is France).
    2. Bingeing on the American candy my mom brings over to France (Spree, Sweetarts, Gobstoppers, Lik-a-maid, Swedish Fish, Jelly Bellies, Jolly Ranchers ...)
    3. Eating chips with before dinner drinks on a regular basis
    4. Eating dessert (yummy French pastries) - also on a regular basis
    5. I pet my cat and then proceed to stuff my face with the chips in number 3 - no hand washing after petting (my cat) here!

  52. Cook Zero and yes, many times before 11am. Sue me I don't drink coffee and with two young kids I NEED some caffeine early once in a while.
Those three boxes of candy next to your bed wouldn't last more than on hour with me and my husband would wake up to a sticky fingered candy comatosed wife.
Swiss chocolate EVERYDAY, I"m Swiss so I call them my Swiss Vitamins and that makes it ok! :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I eat an ice-cream sundae for dinner sometimes. It's got protein from the milk, right?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I eat before bed almost every single night of the week. Usually it's some sort of sweetened dessert type food (cake, ice cream, cookies), but sometimes it's just cereal. I simply cannot go to bed without my bedtime snack. I've been this way since I was a kid.
I do eat my fruits and veggies, take my vitamins, exercise daily, try to get as much sleep as I can, and make sure my kids do the same. I'm not going to feel shamed or guilty for having coffee, wine, and sugar while watching Biggest Loser. No way.
Oh, and for the record - I've NEVER washed my yoga mat... I'm kinda tempted to go give it a whiff.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My bads: ive never washed my yoga mat because i dont know how!
I never cross train. one of the many reasons i run is so i can still eat cheese, drink wine and have half and half in my coffee. who cares? i refuse to give those up.

i have a passion for old dogs and have a few too many right now. who cares? they need a place to spend their last days/months/years.

I love your blog. you make me laugh with every post and from you, i've learned not to be so hard on myself. You'd think by the time i reached 50 years old i would have learned this on my own.

    Thank you!!

  56. I am laughing so hard right now...it counts as an ab workout right? I make cakes and cookies just so I can eat the raw batter. It's my favorite. Also when my husband is on duty (!) at the firehouse and I feel like crap I will eat a whole bag of salt and vinegar chips and wash it down with a bottle of wine...or two! (I like to do this without his presence!) Then of course I feel so guilty, crappy and it hurts when I workout the next day!
