“Choose You” Healthy Lifestyle Giveaway!

I got an email from Liz Steinhardt on behalf of the American Cancer Society this week. ACS is  launching a new “Choose You Healthy Lifestyle” movement to encourage women to put their own health first and to make choices to help prevent cancer.

I know I joke a lot on this blog about running, pooping and the like, but one of the real reasons I run is to stay fit and healthy. I like fighting age the old fashioned way through botox, boob job exercise, good eating, sound sleeping, laughter and an adventurous spirit.

According to the ACS, “about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise; avoided tobacco products; and got recommended cancer screening tests.”

People! That means you! If you knew you could cut your risks by 50 percent, shouldn’t you go for it? I know I am preaching to the choir here because most of you are already leading pretty damn healthy lifestyles, but is there anything you could do better? Is there anyone you could encourage to lead a healthier lifestyle?

Liz offered to send me a “Choose You Get Healthy Gift Bag”* if I would promote this movement on my blog. Hell yeah! And she said she would give me a second one to give away to one lucky reader.

I wasn’t sure what would be involved in this mystery gift bag and she didn’t specify. Would it be a coupon to Subway and a fake Bic lighter? Some tofu and a box of red wine?

Today, I got this secret gift bag via FedEx and was quite impressed by the contents:

P1060645

P1060649

  • One $50 gift card to Walgreen’s (sweet, right?)
  • One very cool Choose You turquoise t-shirt (I put it on my one-eyed, three legged dog for your viewing enjoyment. Better than taking a picture of it on the counter)
  • One sleek Choose You 25 oz water bottle
  • Two pens (one from Sprite Zero, the other “Choose You”)
  • One flower hair clip (I just gave mine to my daughter; not my style unless I go to Hawaii)
  • One Choose You flower pin – a symbol of ACS’s new health movement to inspire women to put their health first and to make healthy lifestyle choices to prevent cancer
  • Coupon for a free Sprite Zero

Interested in getting your hands on this schwag? If so, do one or all of the following:

  1. Leave me a comment telling me how you maintain a healthy lifestyle (+1)
  2. Leave a second comment telling me which healthy habit you would like to adopt right now and forever more (+1)
  3. Spread the word on your own blog about this giveaway and leave me a comment letting me know (+1)

Each should be a separate comment.

Remember – this giveaway is not limited to women only. Guys – you could always use the $50 to Walgreens for condoms or a jock strap. Enter for your mom, your sister, your wife, your daughter!!

I’ll pick a winner on May 27, 2010. The goods will be sent to you directly from Choose You and ACS.

Because I know you are wondering – what new healthy habit am I going to adopt??? It’s a VERY COOL one and you can do it too. It is environmentally supportive, tasty, extremely healthy, out of my comfort zone, and affordable. Think you know what it is? I will talk about it in a future blog post, so stay tuned.

Well, I’m off to the land of hoes (not the garden tool variety), no clocks/windows, porn and really nice hotels first thing Saturday morning. Yep, VEGAS baby. I am planning to run a few miles on the strip because I’ve always wanted to do this. I might do it in the nude because:

  • What happens in Vegas…(if one more person says this to me, I’ll kick them in the nuts)
  • Anything goes in this town. At the very least I’ll sport the cheetah skirt (and braids for Steve Q).

More next week post-Vegas, if I’m still alive.

*These gift bags are courtesy of  the American Cancer Society. I paid nothin’ for them.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  90. I love your blog; it gives me a laugh most daily :) Hey I ran the Vegas RnR Half last December; it was TOTALLY awesome :):) have fun there!
I totally try to do something active every single day. Sometimes its a good run, some days its just a walk with the kids/dogs. But I do try daily to do SOMETHING. Now in the back of my mind Im trying to burn an extra 500 calories a day. Its not about the weight loss thing although Im trying to shed (and keep shed) about 8 more pounds by summer, but somehow Ive gotten this 500 calorie thing into my head and I try to maintain it. Hey we have to start somewhere. And I dont think cutting those calories out is my aim; Id rather burn them as extra and use the "activity" to improve things otherwise; health, mental and physical.

    ReplyDelete
  91. ok healthy habit I would like to implement: healthier eating. Right now we do eat fairly well and manage to avoid fast food (Blech) almost completely. We cook meals at home and pack lunches. But I want to take it to the next level. Less convenience boxed food and more "whole" food. Just the food as it was meant to be. And a lot more variety. Having 3 kids, its challenging to introduce new foods and they do LOVE their boxed convenience. Hubby is about the hardest thing to "turn" as he does much of the cooking and is totally hooked on easy and fast. But I would like to research more recipes and try more interesting variety of healthy whole foods. :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising...that seems so trivial...but it makes me feel great! I'm getting stronger, building endurance, lifting my mood, and helping all my "internal plumbing" work like it should! I love to run, cycle, lift weights, hike...

    ReplyDelete

  125. I maintain a healthy lifestyle by sitting on my ass all day reading health blogs ... haha! No really, I run, lift and do yoga. I also take the stairs at work and occasionally do 90 minutes of CPR on "large" people, this last one happens to be the most intense workout ever ... in case you were looking for a new thing to try out ...

    ReplyDelete
  126. I maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and being aware of what I eat. I try to find moderation in all the different areas of my life.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Right now: Drink more more more water. I don't drink nearly enough these days and, though fear of having to pee every 5 minutes (especially at work) is sometimes a barrier, I need to get over that and hope my bladder just gets used to feeling saggy and full. It's gonna happen when I'm an old lady anyways, why not start early? I'll just start wearing depends.

    ReplyDelete
  128. The one healthy habit I would like to adopt: eating more fruits and veggies. I really don't get enough and I think it would change my overall diet.

    ReplyDelete
  129. My job involves a lot of sitting at my desk, so in addition to my regular workouts, I make myself get up and go outside twice a day for a brisk 1/2 mile walk near my building. The fresh air, sunshine (usually) and extra cardio really makes me feel good.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Great contest, so important! Well, running and physical activity are a regular part of every day, but I not only eat/cook wisely for myself I do the same for my hubby and his father (who lives with us part time). I make mostly everything that I can myself (i.e. haven't bought bread, cookies, hummus, all things processed etc. in nearly a year). I don't eat the bread or cookies myself, but figure it's good to know what goes into our pieholes comes right from my two hands...What I could work on, is to cross train more, I am lazy this way and have weiny arms to prove it!

    ReplyDelete
  131. If eating right and exercising cuts cancer rates by 50% wouldn't you do it? Well, not having sex cuts AIDS rates by at least 90%; so by that logic we should all stop having sex... [thank you ladies, I guess, for keeping me healthy by saying "no"]

    ReplyDelete

  139. Wow this got a lot entries!
Hmmm...I really, really attempt to keep a healthy live style by always staying up on my running and exercise. I know this sounds like a no brainer since I always seem to be in marathon training, but really it is hard. I could give up running today - but I'm too chicken to. I want to live a long, healthy life and I know the choices I make today will effect me tomorrow.
Wow, that was deep - almost too deep for a Friday morning!

  140. I would really, really love to keep my sugar intake to a minium. It's just hard, but this week I have been working hard on it and I think it's a lifestyle change I can make. I know that once I get over this initial hump of cravings (like when I quit smoking!) that it will be easy peasy, but right now I will admit, I am quite cranky!
Less sugar = lower weight = longer, healthy living!
Thanks for the giveaway and thanks to the American Cancer Society

  142. Awesome giveaway. Reminds me to take my healthy living seriously because it could save my life someday. I've adopted a healthy living LIFESTYLE...not a diet. I've changed my eating habits to incorporate more fruits and veggies, less red meat (but definitely not giving that up) and more plant-based proteins. I'm also going to run my first half-marathon in August!

  148. What a wonderful giveaway and a great cause! One of things I do to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to get outside for some sort of activity every day, even if it's just walking my dog. The vitamin d, fresh air, and movement help invigorate my body and mind.

  166. To keep healthy, I have been running half marathon races with my dad this year in honor of my grandmother who passed away in December. She was a Holocaust survivor and I swear was just made of steel. She was incredible, and even wore leather pants and leopard print shirts until 82!

  167. A new healthy lifestyle tip is going to be cross training... I was en route to running my 5th half marathon for the year on June 6th, but just found out this morning that I have a stress fracture which means no more running until at least July or August. I'm devastated, but I know it could be worse, and am hoping to put my energies towards swimming and biking now to maybe start competing in triathlons. I know it will hopefully help me get through the void I have from not running now. I was on my way to my first marathon in November, and am hoping I can still complete it...

  186. okay - the healthy habit I would like to adopt is...hmmm. Stop beating my kids and running from the law disguised as a beer guzzling man? Nah, just kidding.

I think I have pretty darn good healthy habits. I would I could inspire my daughter to pick up on those same habits. She is 20 and I am worried that she is on a path to Biggest Loser. And, of course, unless that is her goal for 15 minutes of fame, which I'm sure it is not, it's not a good path to be on!

If I won the schwag I'd definitely share it with her...and my mom, who is a diabetec, double mastectomy, 2-time cancer survivor!
