I Can’t Believe I Ate That

Yesterday I did a trail run with a friend who I’ve just started running with in the past few months. I knew the day would come when I’d have to break it to her that I needed to squat in the bushes. Yesterday was that day. Thankfully I’m not a self conscious or easily embarrassed person.  I thought she might be embarrassed for me, but quickly learned she was not when she started taking pictures:

Now that’s a good friend.

It is torture living around here where you have to decide which of the crappy, non-scenic trails you want to run everyday. I know when I start marathon training on February 11, I need to get back onto the roads quite a bit to simulate race conditions.

After the run, my mom cooked me lunch  (how cool is it to live near your mom and have her still make you meals? Yes, I’m very lucky). She made a yummy spinach quiche using Bisquick. Bisquick! The staple of my childhood! This got me to thinking bout all of the crazy foods I used to eat as a kid. Stuff I would never eat now.

I pride myself on the fact that my parents were pretty progressive and experimental with food. Healthy and balanced meals were the norm. We did not have a lot of Spam (in fact, I’ve never even tried Spam – but Ken’s family ate quite a bit of it). But, I can remember some strange crap I ingested all the time as a kid (maybe this is why my colon is screwed up):

  • Raw hotdogs. Yep, by brother and I would take them right out of the refrigerator and eat like a banana.
  • Peanut butter and butter sandwiches. Trans fat heaven.
  • Creamed eggs. This was a specialty my grandfather always made (here is the actual recipe he gave me at my wedding shower):

P1130428P1130429

  • Chipped beef (aka shit on a shingle). My mom used to buy it frozen and put it on toast. I used to love that stuff.

  • Uncooked Jell-O right out of the box. We would bring boxes of it to school. The way to eat it was to lick your finger and dip it into the Jell-O powder.
  • Marshmallow fluff sandwiches (Fluffernutter rules, man!)

  • Liverwurst. This used to (maybe still does) come in a tube and was made by Oscar Meyer. I loved liverwurst sandwiches. One time after I graduated from college, my room mate and I had a late night drinking fest and stopped on the way home to buy liverwurst. Needless to say, I haven't had it since.
  • Tang! If it was good enough for astronauts, it was good enough for me.

I think a few marathons should have Tang, liverwurst and marshmallow fluff at the aid stations just to see what happens.

What weird/odd/gross food did you eat as a kid?

  1. I am gagging at some of these--raw hot dogs?! Ugh. But hey, I ate Spam, yes Spam, when I was a kid. And in college--the most disgusting combo ever, Doritos and cream cheese. No wonder I was a cow.

    3. Hello everyone,My name is Pamela Walker. I am here to share my testimony on how i conceived my babies(Twins). I have been married to my husband for 3 years without no child. We have been to different doctors and it was confirmed that the both of us are in good condition. I had problems with my in-laws because of the child issue. I suffered in the hands of my mother in-law for good two years because me and my husband couldn't give her grand child, I cried all night and kept praying to God to hear my prayers. On one faithful day me and my friend where discussing about my this issue and she introduced to DR. My dad (who grew up dirt poor and as an adult never turned his nose up at any food) used to take a piece of white bread, spread potted meat on it, plop a sweet gherkin on top, and eat it as a foldover sandwich. It wasn't too bad, actually, though I shudder to think what was actually in all that potted meat.

  11. hahahaha...I used to LOVE liverwurst. Actually I still do but now I just call it pate, it sounds so much fancier. :D
I was part of the Tang generation too but didn't drink it much. My mom was very granola when I was young so things like twinkies, hot dogs and kraft dinner didn't make their way into our household until my siblings arrived (several years after me) and my mom became pressed for time.

    1. When I was in grade school I would come home after school and fix me a Peter Pan PB and Miracle Whip sandwich on white bread. I LOVED THEM!!! I'm not sure when I stopped eating them, but as an adult I haven't had the nerve to try one. I was at work one day at a new job years back and we were talking about something that led me to tell these two older co-workers (late 60's) that I used to eat my PB and MW sandwiches. They both said they eat PB with regular mayo, sliced pickles, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Hmm. I thought about trying that but haven't yet...25 years later. I bet it's probably good. My mom used to make us when I was growing up SOS, but with canned tuna, peas, and gravy on toast. I got a craving for SOS today and I'm making it for my son tonight but with chipped beef on biscuits. This will be his first time ever to eat it...he is 18. Hope he enjoys!

  13. My mother was a health nut. Carob covered frozen yogurt instead of ice cream kind of heath nut. And this was the 70s. I didn't have a flutternutter until college. But! I do remember eating olive loaf at one point. It was like, baloney with olives mixed in. I liked it. Today that sounds revolting. Gak.

  14. Fried bolonga and pickle sandwiches with melted cheese and mayo on toast. Then we would fight over who got to drink the pickle juice when the jar was empty. We would say "I'm going to make one of 'those' sandwiches." We would get so pumped!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I ate a lot of peanut butter and butter sandwiches when I was a kid and more than I should have as an adult. As a kid, I also regularly scooped a tablespoon of peanut butter out of the jar and walked around licking the peanut butter off the spoon like a weird lollipop/ice cream thing.

When I was a young adult (read poor), I ate a lot of Stouffer's cheese enchiladas. They were 99 cents at the time. You could see half an inch of oil on the surface after you took it out of the microwave. I had to drain some of the oil before I ate it. So gross!

  16. Banana sandwich: sliced banana on Wonder bread with Miracle Whip

Peanut butter goop: Peanut butter mixed with margarine and corn syrup. Wad up Wonder bread and dip. Or use Fritos.

Sliced american cheese on Wonder bread (with Miracle Whip, of course) placed under the broiler until it bubbled up.

Brown Sugar....straight (the big clumps were the best)
My dad (former Marine) used to make "SOS" at least once a week

  19. I still eat fluffernutter sandwiches! I read (in Runners' World?) a few years ago that it was great Exercise food--something about a good ratio of carbs and protein. I've even taken a half a fluffernutter sammie in my bento box to eat mid-bike-leg of a couple half iron tris! I like to mix in some "real food" on the bike.

  21. Beefburgers - I used to joke I'ld run a burger van when I grew up! All through the BSE crisis and subsequent era beef was really cheap in the UK, and I would have burgers or beef sausages for breakfast, burger & chips for school lunch, and sometimes a beef & onion pie for tea too :-/ I reckon the only reason I don't have mad cow disease is that we got the REALLY cheap burgers which were mainly soy anyway. Now I pay a premium for soy - lol!

There was also the cheap white bread that goes like rubber... processed cheese slices... club bars, really fatty and salty crisps, Bernard Matthews breaded turkey products, Jamaica Ginger Cake, Soreen malt loaf, and I used to get through a crazy amount of drinking chocolate (sometimes straight from the can)... And for a treat, a massive portion of proper Fish and Chips from the chippy, cooked in lard!

They said I was just a naturally large child with a little puppy fat *FACEPALM*

  22. I remember sneaking up into the top cupboard with my brother one Sunday morning and picking out and eating all the fake blueberries from the the blueberry pancake mix. My sister used to eat (just grab and eat) sticks of butter as a toddler, we had to put a lock on the fridge. My best friend STILL loves all raw dough and batter and will devour it- not just licking the bowel or eating cookie dough, but bread dough, cake batter by the cupfull, etc.

    Raw hot dogs, yes!
Doritos dipped into a bowl of Open Pit barbecue sauce
Spam straight out of the can
chipped beef on toast was a favorite at our house
spoonfuls of Nestle Quick powder straight from the can
raw spaghetti noodles (we would chow on these!)
    Tang
    Tab cola (loved this stuff!)

and here was my childhood recipe for some sweet dough in a pinch: a bunch of white flour in a bowl, add water until pasty and then add a few chocolate chips. Yum!

I think colored things are particulary gross. Like eating that purple and green ketchup they used to have?? ugh.

  37. My parents ate sliced tomatoes sprinkled with salt. I sprinkled mine with sugar. And my favorite breakfast food: plain chocolate cake covered with fresh cream that we skimmed off the milk from our cow every day. I would put enough cream on that cake to mush it up and make "soup". Ewww.

Peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches (thanks, dad!)

  43. I used to eat raw hot dogs, too as a kid. I would actually take one weiner (yeah, I said it) to eat, while I cooked the other in the microwave for the actual hot dog.

For me, it would be lots and lots of happy meals, adventure meals, kids meal from various fast food establishments. I barely eat at Micky D's anymore and that's only for breakfast a couple of times a year. I also ate alot of bologna just write out of the package. And I drank LOTS of kool-aid. ReplyDelete
  67. We used to put the marshmallow cream in our hot chocolate - good stuff!
And, we made hot jello - best stuff for a sore throat!!!
I think the worst thing we ate (and something I have never even purchased for my boys!) - frozen fish sticks! Ugh!!!

Cheese Whiz, my mom used to put it into celery stalks, double gross out.
One summer at camp I lived for two weeks on -white bread, spread thick with butter, topped with ketchup, with enough sugar soaked into the ketchup so it wouldn't run anywhere. It was our cabin's considered opinion that eating anything else was a death sentence. A bunch of kids "had to go home early", if you know what I mean, wink wink.

  69. Potted meat on crackers & Vienna sausages....I can't believe I ate those things when I was younger. What was my mother thinking???

    ReplyDelete
  70. I used to have Olive loaf sandwiches for lunch every day. They still sell it in the deli dept...although most places call it "pickle and pimento loaf".

Google it for some lovely images!

  72. What is the potted meat that several poster have mentioned? Or, given the topic, do I want to know?

    1. I know! I'm still trying to figure that out too.

    2. I'd forgotten about potted meat! It used to be popular in the UK when I was a kid. It's a meat spread in a jar and according to Wiki it contains tripe and "fatty tissue", among other things. Yuk!

      Delete
    3. I love tripe! I never had it growing it up, but I found it everywhere in Rome and Florence. In the States, many good Mexican restaurants serve Menudo (tripe soup) on Saturdays and Sundays. Just mix in chopped onions, hot chile powder (or fresh chopped Serrano peppers, dried oregano, fresh cilantro, and the juice from several wedges of lime. Fabulous!

    4. I thought potted meat was another word for Vegemite, but not. Vegemite sounds good in comparison.

      Delete
    5. Vegemite is yeast extract. So is Marmite. Both are great on toast or an English muffin with some butter of cream cheese for breakfast. You either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground. I love the stuff!

  74. HAHAHAHAHA! My mom used to eat shit on a shingle- pretty sure that's what started my education of four-letter words, her and my dad comparing the crap they ate as kids and wouldn't force us to eat. I never had chicken pot pie until I made one as an adult because my dad was scared by too many single-serve frozen pot pies. Here's something my mom still eats- and it grosses me out- "milk toast," which is basically toast covered in sweetened, condensed milk and coconut before you toast if. Thank God I'm allergic to coconut.
Tang is how my parents and pediatrician discovered I'm allergic to food dyes. Fluffernutters just might be how I turned a peanut sensitivity as a child (Ie, I puked, but no big deal) into a full-blown, please don't open peanuts if I'm in the room adult allergy. My poor husband sends me out on an errand when he wants peanut butter in his oatmeal. True story.
I miss Tang. And peanut butter. And fluffernutters...
Have you ever tried drinking warm Jello? Jello "juice"- sure to cure any cold, according to my brother (and sometimes, me, too).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When I was a kid my mom would give me warm Jello water when I had the stomach flu. I think maybe it was the 70's/80's equivalent to Pediasure or Gatorade. She would also give me warm Tang with cinnamon when I had a cold. To this day I can't think about Jello water without feeling ill. But I totally crave warm Tang when I feel a cold coming on.

  75. Um, BARF. No wonder your digestive system is permanently broken! Ha. Although I've had a slightly more adult version of creamed eggs that is wonderful, so I can't knock that one.

  76. I use to love liverwurst sandwiches on pumpernickel bread! My grandma always had both on hand.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are as good now as they were then. Trust me. Try one and you'll know what I mean. Sometimes, when you're in the mood, a well-made liverwurst sandwich can be the ultimate comfort food.

      Delete
  77. I used to eat condensed milk sandwiches. Mmm - butter and condensed milk on white bread.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I feel nauseous just thinking about the liverwurst I ate as a kid. We also ate boxed Mac & Cheese (the powdered cheese kind), and objected VEHEMENTLY to any other kind of Mac & Cheese. We were a pretty health-conscious family, so my Mom tried a number of homemade versions, but my sister & I would turn our noses up. We wanted powdered cheese! [Hilarious, because I'm something of a cheese snob these days.]

Current "gross food" confession: Where I live now, a standard coffee shop snack is lightly toasted brown bread with thin slices of butter (not spread out, just sliced on laid on), and either sugar, or a local coconut egg "jam". It is delicious. Even the sliced butter.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I loved PB and pickle (hamburger dills) sandwiches. And liverwurst is best with mayo and green pepper slices.
However I think I'm gonna try a fluffernutter, sounds yummy

  82. I used to eat the beef and gravy in the boil in a bag over bread..ugh..I tried to buy it as an adult to see if I liked it, but it just sat in my freezer..I couldn't bring myself to actually cook it bc I ate so much as a child.. Also my mom used to make me drink jello water (jello before it turns to jello) when I was sick..I guess when it turns hard it does not cure you like jello water. lol

  84. I LOVE peanut butter and butter sandwiches! Haven't had one in ages, but they're such creamy goodness....

We also ate sh*t on a shingle (with peas -- weird), drank Tang, but can't say I ever ate a "raw" hot dog. Oog.

Peanut butter spread on a slice of bologna and rolled up is pretty good, too.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Lovely picture.

How do you eat raw hotdogs? Have you ever won a hot dog eating contest?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I laughed when I read your list. Raw hotdogs, definitely! My dad used to take us to a butcher who used to hand them out to the kids while we waited in line!

Here's one for you, peanut butter and ketchup on a ritz cracker. No, really! Grandmom made it for us at parties, and we thought we were getting some fancy h'orderves!

Still love liverwurst and creamed chipped beef.

As for the uncooked jello, I was on the swim team as a kid. We used to bring boxes of jello powder and eat the powder out of the pack right before our race. We thought it would "make us faster".

    LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  87. OMG...that liverwurst was the best!!! I still sneak a knife full out of the tube when I see that my mom occasionally has it in her fridge. Probably the other frickin gross thing that I ate/did was use a full small beverage cup of mayo from McD's to dip my fries in. Yes, I would have it filled right up and use the entire cup for an order of fries.
Those fluffernutter sandwiches would be a great sell at an aid station.Mmmmmm.........

  88. I nearly shit my pants just from reading that food let alone actually eating it.

That being said.....SPAM. Loved it with chopped hard boiled eggs. Used to eat it quite a bit as a kid but never have I had Macaroni And Cheese. Odd right?

    ReplyDelete
  89. When we went shopping with Mum the butcher used to give us a raw hot dog as a treat!
Also had unsliced white bread loaves and my brother & I used to 'dig in' and eat all the bread just leaving a hollowed out crust.
Lunch at primary school was white bread, ham & chicken slice (yes - two types of processed meat blended together) and tomato sauce.
In New Zealand the Tang equivalent is Raro which came in a sachet, my favourite flavour was Mango Orange.
I used to combine rasberry jam with icing sugar & mix into a pink paste - sugar heaven!
As a child my husband used to have chicken necks for dinner (boiled up with salt) - yuck.
Still eat sandwiches made with peanut butter & slabs of butter, only now it's organic 100% peanut butter so that makes it healthy...

  95. Oh god, I'd love to see liverwurst at an ultra aid station. I doubt PB and fluff would be around too long. I've heard of a 12k's of Christmas "Race" where people woule run 1k, and then eat and drink something (not running friendly) like egg nog and a cookie, then do another 1k and have a shot and a doughnut, etc. It sounds like you could do something like this with some of those foods. just keep some buckets around.

  96. Jello out of the box was our energy food! We would eat it on the bus to and from cross country meets. My sister and I would eat frozen hot dogs! Great on a hot summer day with no air conditioning in the house. I used to put grape kool aid mix in with milk, and the bottom of the glass was thebest with all the sugar. Oh and my moms family would have "cannibal sandwiches"-raw ground beef on saltines with salt and pepper. It's a wonder how I never ended up with food poisoning!

  97. I am so making creamed eggs!

    ReplyDelete
  98. i had a friend that loved peanut butter and mayo sandwiches. My mom was too worried about being fat for that, so we ate a lot of fat free cheese.

    ReplyDelete
  99. My mom still raves about chipped beef on toast! Gag! I used to eat raw hot dogs, and uncooked ramen noodles. I remember my dad heating up hot dogs in the microwave sliced length-wise then laying them on white wonder bread coated with a thick layer of mayo and ketchup. Apparently hot dog buns were scarce! LOL! And I know this isn't all that "weird" but it makes me gag - margarine (aka country crock), peanut butter AND jelly - all three?! YUCK. I used to eat it and thought it was great.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think I ate all of those except the creamed eggs.

    Oh... those were the days!

    PS
To this list I'll add: Hot dogs sliced into cooked-from-a-box mac 'n' cheese!

  101. I remember eating a lot of bologna sandwiches when I was little. Yikes.
The first thing i learned to cook was Ramen.
When I was in high school I recall eating a Steak-ums cheesesteak from the caf every single day. Also, that the onion rings were excellent. Mmm...breaded, perfect rings of onion-esque flavor...

  102. Fried bologna with Kraft cheese slice melted on top. Served up on white bread, of course.
White butter bread dipped in Wyler's grape drink mix (my mom never bought Kool-Aid!).
Grape jelly and Kraft cheese slice sandwich on white toast.
Frozen slices of bread straight from the freezer.

  103. Dude, I ate peanut butter & butter sandwiches EVERY DAY in elementary school. Still prefer them over PB & J. Even better? Peanut butter & butter on TOAST.

Things I ate as a kid:
    -Saltines with butter
    -Butter & sugar sandwiches
-Milk toast/oven toast: soft bread spread with butter, then broiled until toasty and golden; then you roll it up and dip it in cold milk. (still love this once in a while)
    -PB & potato chip sandwiches
-Rice krispies w/ chocolate milk: my mom was pretty strict about sugar intake so we never had any "sugar" cereal. So I'd make chocolate milk and pour it over my rice krispies. Which I ate/drank out of a glass.
