What I Won’t Be Doing On My 46th Birthday

Running 46 miles. Some bloggers run the number of miles that they turn on their birthday. Impressive for sure. But, if I did that I would run right into my grave and I’d rather not die today. Instead I might eat 46 Reese's or drink 46 ounces of something.

Writing a blog post containing 46 things about me. I did this on my 43rd birthday and I think that is enough (Dang. I’ve been blogging for over three years. Might be time to stop?). If you care what my phobia is, that I used to deal black jack, how much heavier I used to be and 40 more random things about me - go HERE.

Feeling bad about turning 46. A friend left me a message asking if I was “okay about my birthday.” I LOVE my birthday, even as I’m getting older. It never occurred to me to not feel okay about it even though I am not officially closer to 50 than 40.

Taking a rest day. One of the gifts I give to myself today is the gift of running. 7 mile tempo run coming up!

Doing laundry (well, I don’t do it anyway, hooray for husband and kids) or doing any other type of house cleaning, cooking, etc. Two words: Sushi HAPA!!

Working. I paid my dues this week cramming stuff in so I could be free. See? Here is proof (is my hair receding?):

Making my own cake. My mom already made me one on Sunday (banana with caramel icing) and I ate it all. Maybe I will buy another cake tomorrow. I love the cakes at Costco with the cheesecake icing/filling. But, I think they serve 2,098 people. Do you all want to come over?

Me enjoying cake on my 1 year birthday. February 22, 1968.

Do birthdays depress or excite you? I love my birthday no matter how old I am. I see it as the dawn of new possibilities!

What is your absolute favorite thing to do on your birthday? I love a massage or pedicure, a free car wash and dinner with family and friends. I’m easy (TWSS)

  1. Ooh, first - and I usually don't comment, but had to wish you a Happy Birthday!!

Um, I'm turning 50 in a couple of weeks (yikes - when did that happen?) and will be running 50K. Should have gone with the 50 bottles of wine in 50 days option!!

Anyway - have a great day, Beth!

  5. Happy Birthday!

My favorite thing to do on my birthday is eat cake. But it seems year after year my husband forgets that it's my favorite thing. He doesn't think cake is that important.

Hope you have a great Birthday!

  6. Happy birthday!! My boyfriend turns 27 today, maybe I should tell him to run 27 miles ;-)

I love birthdays so I have a reason to eat cake. Have you had that chocolate layered cake from Costco, ah amazingness on a plate!

  9. Love my birthday! I turned 39 this year, and I'm excited to turn 40 because I get to switch age groups. I'm old and slow in the 35-39 year group or heaven forbid the 30-39 year group. I'm young and speedy in the 40-45 group so next year will be my year to grab up some age group awards! Favorite thing to do on my birthday is have lunch by myself. Sounds weird, but I can go out to a favorite place, order whatever I want, read a book, and take as long as I want to eat and sit at the table without kids or anyone rushing me through the meal.

  11. Happy Birthday! I am glad you don't feel bad about your birthday-- birthdays are fun, you should celebrate! Oddly, the birthdays that weird me out are the "5s." I didn't feel strange about turning 30 or 40, but I somehow felt old and depressed when I hit 35, and I suspect the same may be true in a few years at 45. Don't know why. I am also on team cake (CAKE! This is sort of how I get around cake, so I have to be careful: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/10/god-of-cake.html ), so I think you should have all the cake you want today!

  13. I'm a HUGE fan of birthdays - my own, or anyone else's - and love making a big darn deal out of them. I bring cakes even to people who specifically tell me they don't want cake, because EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE CAKE. Glad you're celebrating properly. Happy birthday! (And please don't stop blogging.)

  16. Oh, and this is what always makes me laugh... when people find out how old I am and they look at me with horror, and say I couldn't POSSIBLY be THAT OLD. You look so young! I know it's a compliment, but since when was 38 THAT OLD?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Happy birthday! I think it's great that you embrace your age. I will admit that it bothers me to now be closer to 50 than 40. Stupid, but it does.

Best birthday I ever had was when it fell on the day of the Longmont Tri. Everyone I ran by I made sure they knew it was my "special day". A friend suggested I make a t-shirt that said "Don't pass me a**hole, its my birthday!" I wish I had done it!

  20. Happy Birthday, Beth! I love birthdays, too. No matter how old I am, I am happy to just "be here". Thank you for gifting me with your blog - albeit a sarcastic one.

  21. Happy birthday Beth! I don't mind birthdays - I think there's something wonderful about each year/age/stage of life.

On my birthday I love getting treated to breakfast in bed or a meal out. And then I'd like to spend the day outside with my family, hiking or camping.

  22. Boss!! I love my birthday too (I'm 43). The fact that I'm smarter woman, runner and comfortable in my own skin makes getting older ok. Enjoy your run and your Costco cake. I'll be over later.

  27. Happy happy birthday!

At this point in my life, I hate birthdays. The big three-oh is coming at me in exactly 4 weeks and right now all it means is a lot more pressure to move to the "next phase" of life (aka babies), which I am not ready for in any way shape or form.

On the dreaded day, I have two simple requests: hogmaw made by my mother and a white birthday cake with white icing and yellow roses from Ukrop's bakery. It's not my birthday without them!

    =)

  28. Happy Birthday! I too am not running my age, can't run that far, or baking my own cake. My birthday is a non event as it is tax season (I do taxes) so celebrating will have to wait till the spring.

  29. Happy birthday!! Looks like you have a good day planned! (loved your 43 list!)
I'm one of the idiots who runs my age on my birthday - can't help it! I actually started doing that way before I ever blogged!

  30. I love my birthday. And if it falls on a weekend it's even better.
I like to do something outdoors for my birthday, either run or hike or bike, then go for a scenic drive, do some antiquing, then have a nice dinner either in home or out.

Happy Birthday, Beth! I can honestly say I'm happier in my 50s than in my 40s.

  31. Happy birthday. I love my birthdays, no matter how old I get. For my 50th, my family surprised me and flew in from 5 different states. My BFF gave me a pogo stick. Who says getting older can't be fantastic?

  32. Birthdays bothered me at one time, now I love them. Its only one day a year that I can even come close to saying "today us all about me" I had so much fun on my 40th that I think I should always celebrate that way (my
    liver may tell you otherwise)

love to celebrate my birthday with my family. My mom cooks my requested menu and I make dessert since I LOVE to bake.

Happy Birthday. Enjoy you day to the fullest. Cheers to you!

  40. Happy Birthday! I like finding out the restaurants/businesses in town that give you free stuff on your birthday (eg, free burrito, free ice cream, free drink) and going to those places. Basically, I like going to as many places as possible and loudly proclaiming, "It's my birthday!"

  41. I just read your 43 facts from your 43rd bday, and OMG I need therapy for my vomit phobia as well. My daughter barfed last night and I was in tears begging my husband to work from home in the morning at least until we knew if breakfast stayed down. I just can't deal with it. How did you get over it???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also have a fear of vomit, and haven't puked since I was 7. However, my daughter, my dogs, cats, husband, etc. have all puked from flu or otherwise, and after the initial ick factor, I've found I'm okay with the clean up part. Weird, huh?

      Delete
    2. I wouldn't say I am over it, but I don't stress about it as much as I used to. My kids being older has a helped a lot. My husband knows if one of the kids is puking, he has to deal with it. I avoid it at every cost and do not put myself in situations where it is a possiblity. Flying is still tough b/c I get afraid of people getting airsick.

      Delete
    3. I also can deal with the clean up better than the action of puking. I think it is the unknown of when it will happen, the lack of control, etc. I hope it gets better as my kids (almost 3 and 5 1/2) get older! My husband can deal with it without any issues. He just says it is what it is. Flying is hard on me as well because I am always looking around me worried, especially if we hit turbulence. I was SO SCARED when we hit major bumps and drops over the Rockies last summer. It was so bad people were screaming so I was just sure somebody was going to barf all over. Some kid did on a flight I was on as a kid, so it has stuck with me. I used to work at Blockbuster and had people barf in the store on occasion. One time, so guy got sick in the trash can at the front of the store and I literally jumped over the counter and ran to the back of the store and plugged my ears (several years ago).

  48. Happy Birthday! I love my birthday and I make a point to make myself feel special - why rely on others? Birthdays are a big deal around here. This was quite shocking for my husband (#5 of 6 kids) who never had much of a celebration for his birthday...until he met me. The first year we were together I bought him a gas grill. He must have said about a hundred times - to anyone who would listen - "She bought me a GRILL!!" I like to spoil him since he missed out on it so much as a child.

  49. Happy birthday! Love that you're celebrating it on your terms. I used to get depressed about my birthday, but not since I took control of my life, lost weight, and started running. This year for my 58th birthday my husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson all went to California and met up with family there at Disneyland and California Adventure. We spent the day having a blast riding rides and being a kid again, then my husband and I ran in the Tinkerbell Half Marathon later in the week; I ran with wings and a tutu, can't wait to do it again. Best. Birthday. EVER! I love my life and am having more fun than ever.

  50. I LOVE my birthday, it drives me crazy when people say "I don't have birthdays anymore" I worked in oncology for 15 years, if you don't have a birthday it means you are dead, so harsh but true. I love to take a day for me, massage or pedicure, lunch with a good friend, yoga and a run. I also love wandering around Barnes and Noble by myself looking at all the possible reads for the year ahead. Then I have a day with my kids and husband, we go out to breakfast my people shower me with gifts and cards (mostly just a Starbucks gift card). Honestly at 41 if I want something I will just get it. My husband teases me because my birthday sometimes is a birth week. But it is great to be alive and blessed with another wonderful year to run and play and enjoy all the great people around me. HAPPy BIRTHDAY!

I am not a big fan of my birthday. I don't have a problem with getting older, I just enjoy other people's birthdays more. I do love to give myself the gift of a great run, too. I love my birthday! I just turned 50 and totally embraced it! Aging is a privilege, i've had some friends not make it this far. I never go to work on my birthday and always try to either take a weekend or day trip out of Los Angeles. I celebrated my 50th in Carmel, CA and it was fabulous!

I hope you have a wonderful fun filled day! Enjoy!

  60. Hey Beth,
Hope you're having a great day. I love my birthday as well. I turn 45 this year (at the end of April) and feel as young as ever. I agree with many of the things you do on your special day (don't cook, make my own cake, clean, etc... but love going for a run with friends) I always love that I can have a super sunny warm day or the possibly random snow day. Spring days are great in Colorado.

  61. Happy Birthday my fellow Pisces! I have always loved my birthday too, even just the actual date of mine makes me happy. (I will turn 44 next Thursday 2/28.) I'm really getting a birthday week - my friends are taking me to a Carrie Underwood concert tonight; then I am taking the actual day of it off and my mom & dad invited me for breakfast (my favorite - French toast). Then the whole huge family of sibs, nieces, nephews, etc. will congregate the following weekend. Hope your special day is wonderful!
