The Post Where I Am Tired and a Dumb A$$

I am an absolute, no good mess today. I did something last night for the LAST time. No more staying out late on a school night. Body.Just.Cannot.Handle.It.

We had friends in from out of town and after spending the day with them watching the Broncos get schooled and eating dinner at my favorite restaurant, we went out to the Fox Theater in Boulder to see a show.

The show started at 8:00 p.m., which is usually the time I am in my PJs in front of the TV with popcorn and a glass of wine. The first act, James McMurtry (like watching paint dry), finished at 9:30 p.m. which is exactly the time I am in bed with lights out. At 10:49 p.m. the second act, the Gourds (hilarious, energetic, odd), was just getting revved up and I knew the next day would be very ugly.

We stumbled in at 12:30 a.m. I fitfully slept off and on until 6:00 a.m. This is not enough for me to function like a nice person.  I had to go to a home visit for work this morning and literally had to douse my eyes in Visine four times just to look a little less like a strung out criminal.

That is one tired, dried out eyeball.

Today is a rest day for me because my body just seems to want to rest and I’m not going to push it. Saturday’s race took a lot out of me, I won’t lie. I’m not sure why I was so beat up, but I was. Could be a whole slew of reasons or just that I had an off day. I cannot, however, WAIT to run tomorrow because I just got these beauties in the mail:

P1130067

Brooke’s Pure Cadence

And, now I have a confession for you. Sometimes I am a dumb ass with a capital “D.”

So, my son Sam took up football this year and is playing on the freshman high school team. They’ve been practicing everyday after school since mid-August and have had 4 games. Many of their practices have been in 90 degree heat.

Every time I watch a game, I think how nice it is that the school launders the boy’s uniforms. I just assumed this to be true because Sam has never once brought a pair of tights or a jersey home to wash. Yes, I really thought this. I really thought public school was doing my son’s laundry. What the eff is wrong with me? It wasn’t until yesterday that I learned the truth:

My friend, Kim: So, Sam you must have a ton of laundry from football.

Me: No, the school does it. Can you believe it? So nice of them!

Sam: What? No. I just keep wearing the dirty stuff and put it my locker. Man it really stinks in there.

Me (yelling, on the verge of hysteria): Wait, what? For the past 5 weeks you've been wearing the same gear without washing it? I thought the school was washing it?

Sam: Are you kidding? Like the school would do that. Everything just stinks, but it’s fine.

NO it is so NOT fine. I sent him off this morning with a kiss and reminder:

P1130073

That’s all I got today. Going to try to sneak in a nap before the afternoon kid-rush begins. And, clearly I need to get ready to do some major laundry later. Hope I don’t have to burn his uniform.

As you get older do you find it harder to stay out late and function the next day? (especially if you have to get up early?) I seriously can’t do it. I don’t even like to do it anymore.

What’s the last concert you’ve seen? Before last night it was Michael Franti.

Any confessions you’d like to make about a time you were a dumb ass?

Do you have a favorite restaurant?

  1. I can hardly go out late.
Last concert Toby Keith over labor day weekend. We were back in the hotel by 11:30 that night. First time ever.
And that's the funniest stuff with your kid!

  2. I am with you. I am in my PJs by 8pm and ready to sleep by 9. The am workouts come early.

  3. I'm only 32, but I've never been good at staying up late and functioning the next day! I love to get my full eight hours of sleep.

Hmmmm, last concert - Lady Gaga - total freak show and totally worth it.

Confessions on being a dumb ass - nope, I'm always perfect. HAHAHA. Ok, that's a lie. Just today I forgot that in addition to the group run I do at lunchtime, I also have Girls on the Run practice and I didn't pack extra workout clothes. Now those nice middle school girls will get stinky me :-)

My favorite restaurant is Hill Street Cafe in Oceanside, California. It's in this cool old house that's been redone as a restaurant and they have amazing vegetarian fare there!

  4. It happens to the best of us. Regroup tonight and salvage the week!

  5. I cannot stay up past 9:30 for the life of me, nor do I care to for the most part. Once and a while I like to let loose but I find it takes me at least 2 days to feel "normal" again.
The last concert I saw was Gogol Bordello the same day I ran a half marathon. It was a small venue, standing room only. My legs were not happy but the show was awesome. I'm going to do it all over again on Oct 14th. It's my last long run before NYC so I thought I'd run 14km to the start of the Scotia half, race the half and then that night go rock my socks off to Rush.
I'm a dumbass on a regular basis. See above.
Your son is HILARIOUS. I wish you the best of luck getting that kit clean! Might need a couple of washes!

  6. I'm with you too. We had a Lyle Lovett concert my husband had gotten very expensive tickets to 4 months ago and of course I had a sprint tri the very next morning. Ugh. I made it and did fine, but I so prefer to be in bed at 9:30 and asleep by 10 if I even make it that long. I get up at 5a.m. almost every morning and that is now my body clock.
And that same conversation happened with my son and his football gear. I was horrified that it had NEVER been washed. YUK. I don't think he ever brough it home though. He survived. He's now 21.
Favorite restaurant at the moment is Meso Maya!

  7. Saw Train at Red Rocks last Wednesday night, hardest Thursday AM ever, called in the reserves, someone else had to do morning carpool, just couldn't do it. Laid on couch with Toy Story on and let the 2 year climb all over me while I tried to catch a few more winks. YIKES! I need sleep! I do not function without sleep, or at least 6+hours!

  8. I am an old lady at heart and would be soooo happy to go to bed between 9 and 10 every night. I married a man who would rather stay up until 2am...so i usually end up getting to bed around midnight. Yuck. I sneak in naps when I can. He doesn't understand the whole "wake up at 6 to run then rush to work" business ;-)

  9. My son STINKS so badly after football practice that I can not imagine what those 5 week old stink-fest clothes are gonna be like. The whole house smells when my kid brings home his gear (twice a week should you be wondering!). Good luck with that! :)

Last concert was a long time ago, however next concert is Sunday: Uproar Festival with Papa Roach, Staind, Godsmack, and Shinedown. Yes my ears will be bleeding and I will have a headache. I can't wait! :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I just laughed out loud! That is hilarious. Kids just really don't seem to notice that kind of thing. Smelly? No big deal. Skid marks? That's fine.

Ohhh man. I am a nerd and try to get to bed at a decent time, even on the weekends. This means foregoing bar hopping with my friends on many weekends. But my morning is much more enjoyable when I get to sleep by 11.

  11. I have a teething infant on my hands. Needless to say, I haven't slept great in the last few weeks. Flash to this mornings run, my longest in quite some time. I am complaining to hubs about one foot feeling swollen as I warm up and stretch. He looks at my feet, then slowly back at my face with a look for bewilderment. I look down. I am wearing 2 different pairs of shoes. Nice! Glad I caught that before heading out the door. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  12. I hate to stay out late because like you said as i get older it is not worth the way i feel the next day. I hate to say this but yes age does have alot to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Last concert? Train after the RNR VA Beach! Pretty good despite the rain. I totally have the same issue with staying out on a school night. I am 37 and still call them school nights!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Cannot function if I don't get enough sleep.

    Those sneakers are BEAUTIFUL!

And I would totally make the same d-a$$ assumption, followed by "what the ef was I thinking" if I were in your shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Can't stay up late anymore, don't particularly want to! And at home or out, I have a one drink limit these days. Alcohol interferes with my sleep.

For my son's 14th birthday I bought tickets for us to see David Byrne & St. Vincent. The concert is next Wednesday. The show doesn't start until 8. In the northern 'burbs of Atlanta, probably 45 minutes away. I am anticipating it and dreading it at the same time! I'm in bed by 9:30, lights out by 10 every night. I just can't function otherwise. So I know I'll be dragging next Thursday. But my son still thinks I'm cool and wants to spend time with me. So it's all good!

With regard to sports gear, this same son plays soccer. He was sitting at my computer one night after practice, doing his spanish homework. I came and looked over his shoulder and - OMG. I got a whiff of his shinguards. They could have gagged a maggot. When I drive him and his friends to practice, I have to roll all the windows down and breathe through my mouth!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am 31, but AC/DC 3 years ago was my last concert.

IN regards to your son, that is common place in HS locker rooms. There were guys that would wear the same clothes every freaking day to practice. The locker rooms smell like after a bunch of people run half a marathon and then just hover in there for 24 hours. We had guys that would have their shirts be so salty from sweat you could literally stand them up over the weekend. It was gross. I'd go a week without washing my practice jersey and I was a rare person to do that. Most people never washed their practice jersey. I would wash my undershirt daily but that is because I wrestled and knew how bad it is to not be sanitary. I am surprised there are not more skin diseases like there are in wrestling from football players and their lack of being sanitary.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I just got up from a nap...and I didn't even go out last night! Half marathons just zap all my energy anymore. Sucks getting old.

I think my last concert was Elton John at Fiddler's Green in 1991. Seriously. Hate concerts; the loud music gives me horrible headaches. I'm so much fun, I know.

LOVE the Med when I was there with you over a year ago :). LOVE Wazee's pizza as a special treat. Had it after RnR Saturday :).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Uh, I'm 24 with a 9:30pm bedtime. If it gets worse as I age, I'm screwed.

Dumb ass move: currently scarfing cool ranch Doritos. From the bag. Can't stop.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hahaha, that is hilarious, I can't imagine what that is going to smell like when you get it.

Yup, I"m gettin' old and cannot stay out late. I feel like it takes me a good 2 days to recover!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks for the good laugh-- I can only imagine what you had to smell before washing it today. HAHAHAHAHA! When my boys come home from camping it smells terrible, (usually I dry heave a couple of times as I put it in the wash) but that is usually a week or less. This must be on a much bigger scale!
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. That is funny about the uniform...love the sneakers!

As you get older do you find it harder to stay out late and function the next day? (especially if you have to get up early?) I prefer to get up early than to stay up late...that is definitely a change for me in the last few years.

What’s the last concert you’ve seen? Poisson and Def Leppard at the Pepsi Center...we left early...had to get to bed!

Any confessions you’d like to make about a time you were a dumb ass? I am a dumb ass a lot more than I care to admit.

Do you have a favorite restaurant? India's Restaurant on Hampden...or the Dancing Noodle in Parker...haven't been to either in months.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love the Med too--and it's 1/2 block from where I work. Dangerous, huh? :^)

Last concert was Mumford & Sons at Red Rocks last month and it was absolutely worth it...but very few bands are. I planned for it well ahead of time and just didn't do much the next day. Normally I like my early bedtime too.

You rocked that half IMHO. Congrats, and I'm glad you are resting. I didn't rest last week and now I have a stupid cold.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've worked evening shift (3-11:30pm) for the last 5 years so I'm kinda used to being up late. I don't get home until midnight and am usually asleep by about 12:30-12:45am. But to stay up much past that nearly renders me dead the next day. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my ability to nap during the day, even when exhausted, so I'm really screwed.

Last concert? Hmmm....I think it may have been a Death Cab for Cutie concert at our local theatre (they're from my town)...and I think it was about 2 years ago. Maybe 3.

I have been on a serious pizza binge lately. Like, wanting to eat it every night. I'm not particular as to the restaurant and am even thinking to make homemade at some point this week. (My fav is Thai Chicken Pizza, which I *ROCK* at making, if I do say so myself.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm in bed by 9:30 as well :) My daughter play high school basketball, for a public school, they was their uniforms :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. geez...*plays and WASH...apparently I should proof read :)

  26. I work in a High School Public School as a PE teacher and the Football coaches were just saying how they are going to start washing the kids practice stuff because so many of them were not taking them home and the locker room was getting unbearable. We have many boys that don't wash their PE clothes and since I am the lone female in department get the job of nicely telling them that they stink and need to wash their clothes. The poor kid stink the rest of the day (other classes) just from wearing the stinky clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Four hours sleep last night and today's speed session was vile. Who'd have thought you'd need sleep to function? Certainly not my middle child.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, no late nights for me or I pay...if I have more than my 2 drink limit, I don't sleep, I lay awake and feel the hangover coming on. Horrible. First the sweats, then the shakes...and that is only after 3 or 4 drinks. I'm old....It isn't worth it anymore!

And stinky football clothes? My 7th grader doesn't understand the need for laundry. Our back room (where he changes) stinks. My eyes water when I come in from garage. When he takes his receiver gloves off in the car, I have to roll down the window to clear the air.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I saw Michael Franti as well last year at the Snowy Range Music Festival in Laramie. Last week I saw Train at Red Rocks with my sister on my birthday. The next day was rough when my 2 year old niece woke me up at 6:30. Getting old sucks. So does DOMS as you get older. I ran that half yesterday, but I know that today is an easy pain day and I am just bracing myself for tomorrow's pain.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It is 8:30. I have 30 minutes to comment and write my own blog. I hope you appreciate the effort here, writing on your comments when I could be doing my own damn blog. 9pm and my head starts nodding. 5:15 comes early and that's if the cats let us sleep that late.

I'm sure the laundry was fine. It might stink a little, but it will be fine. No big deal. For him, and anyone upwind. I washed hockey gear on a seasonal basis.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, I have always been a night owl and remain one. I almost never go to bed before 2am - even the night before a race or long run. I've tried, but just can't seem to make myself fall asleep. And I am finding that I need less sleep as I age. In mt 20's I needed 8-10 hours, but I do fine with 5-6 now (age 45)
Last concert? Petra, Back to the Rock Reunion Tour last year. Loved it!

    ReplyDelete
  32. It might be dumb to think your school is washing Sam's clothes, but it's also dumb to keep wearing dirty clothes...I thin you're both at fault, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha! Loved this post! SO freaking funny!
Well, if he wants to wear stinky, moldy clothes, that is his problem. Boys will be boys. They will get sweaty and stinky again within 5 minutes anyways.

  34. Lots of great concerts in the comments!
My job is producing concerts, so I'm lucky to see a great deal of them. Last night, we had a show with the Lumineers, and it was very awesome.
Your son's football stuff is probably going to make you gag / vomit. Hopefully you have some nose plugs around! It's no wonder that young men are prone to MRSA and those other awful super bug type bacterial infections. My boyfriend is 30 and he still hasn't learned to properly care for his hockey gear, it is quarrantined to a section of the house that I don't have to deal with.

  35. Had myself a dumbass day as well so I thank you for the laugh. Last concert was Snow Patrol in May and we are going to see the again next month. Kids are so gross. My kids do the same gross things. Glad my daughter is doing water polo. At least her suit is in chlorine for 2 hours a day. Of course the pool water is disgusting. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lol! Boys can be so gross! Good thing you figured it out, or maybe his team would win, because the other team fainted from the bad fumes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. When I see those shoes I hear a dozen doves being released in happiness! I love new shoes! All my boys played football and I can only IMAGINE what your sons gear is going to smell like. I made them leave it outside on the porch until the washer was full of soapy water and ready to go!!
I'm 48 and I start thinking about chilling on the couch at about 7pm. I don't sleep well so sometimes I go to bed early and sometimes I stay up until 1am..waiting for my son to come home. (he's late!) I really don't even enjoy much going out late anymore.
Last concert I saw was my sons band. Local band in Utah. I can't get enough watching my kids do cool things!

I have to do at least one dumb thing a day, sometimes more.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oxy Clean is your friend... I have three hockey boys and it sure helps get the stink out.

Here's my dumb ass move of the week. I put my 9 year old to bed at 8 and then let him read until 8:30 and go turn off his light and tell him good night. I went to bed at 8 and got so engrossed in my own book and totally forgot him last night. He came in at 9:40 and told me he had finished the entire chapter book... 9:40 - on a Monday night - eek! Hoping I can let him sleep in a little this morning and he's not a walking zombie at school.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I read under the covers and after my parents went to bed from about 2nd grade on. Carried me straight to the top of my class! Really - your son will learn much more by reading than he will miss out on by being a zombie the next day!

      Delete
  39. I am in grad school and I have 8am classes 3x a week. I can barely stay up past 10-11 anymore during the week. And I am only 21. I hope this isn't what the future has to hold for me haha.

But the worst thing (for me at least) is having intramural sports at like 9pm. Imagine playing 1-2 games of volleyball or indoor soccer that late at night and having an 8am class the next morning. The morning after is not so fun.

    ReplyDelete
  40. We went out twice last weekend - not even on a school night - and it was so hard to do anything the next day, never mind make polite conversation with all the parents at hockey tryouts over the weekend. I ended up waking up with a cold Sunday morning. My body's way of punishing me for staying out late. So, yes, it's definitely getting harder the older I get.

And I'm a dumbass all the time. Just can't give you any examples at the moment (though I'm sure if I asked my husband, he'd be able to produce examples).

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am only 26 and I almost never go to bed after 10:00pm. Hate. Being. Up. Late. (At least not on work nights)
If I stay up late my next day run ALWAYS sucks! Plus I feel like I am off step all day. Some of my most hilarious memories have happened in the wee hours of the morning but then my worst days usually follow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That is so funny about your son's football clothes!!! Isn't that such a dude way of thinking?! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I put my 9-year old to bed around 8:30 and usually end up falling asleep shortly after. One night last week at around 8:00 I caught myself thinking I had to hurry and get everything done, it was almost "bedtime." Before I started running two years ago, I would just hitting my stride around 11:00pm and was rarely in bed before midnight(partly due, no doubt, to my Mountain Dew addiction!). Now I can't function if I am up past 10:00!

The last concert I went to was Pearl Jam back in 1999. I can't believe I just admitted that. I'm such a loser!

My dumb-ass confessions could fill the Encyclopedia Britannica!

    Love your blog!

  44. I can sleep when I'm dead! That's my motto. I totally suck with lack of sleep but I'm not going to pass up doing fun stuff with people I love/fun people just so my co-workers don't get grumpy me. There are memories to be made! Last concert - my sister & I flew to NY to see Flynville Train (an awesome band out of Indiana) in June. It was 48 crazy (sleepless) hours but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Too many dumbass confessions to get started down that road.

  50. Sometimes I feel so alone in my Dumbassness (is that a word?) Last weekend I sprayed a neighbor dog with bear repellent (I swear it's more like a bear than a dog) it chases me with snarls and gnashing teeth when I run. But this day it went after my teenage son so I brought out the big guns. Except, it malfunctioned, didn't spray but "misted" out in a big cloud that blew back all over me. That's right. Dumb ass. After going temporarily blind and burning with the heat of a thousand suns for three hours, it started to be slightly funny. Good to know, it's not water soluable, the only way to stop the unbelievable burning pain is with Dove dish detergent....so my man, bought out the whole supply at the grocery store and I washed in it from head to toe. Every single bottle, every single drop.

  51. LMAO about the football clothes! I love it.

I am so with you on the not being able to hang thing. I was with friends this summer for a night out and I was begging everyone to go home by 9:30. I didn't sleep that night and felt like crap all day. It does suck to get old. Then again, I am perfectly content with the early bird schedule. Acceptance.

  52. Ha ha ha, I love it! I can only imagine the smell as Sam was putting on his shirt. My mini van still has that football player smell and my son has been out of high school now for 2 years!

  56. I go to bed early so that my night owl peeps can sleep in and leave me alone at 4:30 when I get up.
Last concert was the opening show of M-A-D-O-N-N-A. Valentine's Day present I had to wait 8 months to use, but so worth it.
I wasn't home until 2:30 a.m., had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to start my day, which was, needless to say, a waste. I am old, I like my routines, and staying out late is not one of them.
The babysitter was totally pissed off too, since the concert started at 8:00 p.m., and she didn't get home until 3:00 a.m.
BUT SHE GOT PAID to sleep from whatever time after 8 she chose to, so it's all good!
I love, love, love your pink shoes!
