Favorite Things–March 2011

This just may be a new little segment on SUAR. “Favorite things.” Lately I’ve found so many things I can’t live without. I love it when other bloggers highlight stuff they love, so thought I would too.

1. Running on Empty by Marshall Ulrich, famed ultra runner. It will be released April 14 and I suggest you snag a copy. I will be giving one away on the blog when I do my official review on that day. I’ve read tons of running books, but this one highlights the mental aspect of running unlike any other book I’ve read.  “All endurance sports are about continuing on when it feels like you have nothing left, when everything aches, when you feel done – but you’re not.” Plus, you look good reading it in the tub. Marhall’s FB link is HERE and his website is HERE if you want to check it out.

2. This shirt. You see me wear it all the time. Yes, I do wash it after 95 wearings. It is the “twist top” from Athleta. It is the perfect running shirt. Fits snuggly, wicks moisture and looks kick ass. It is on sale right now for $49.99 (down from $69.99). Also comes in red and blue.

3. Burts Bees Lip Shimmer in champagne color. I have this stuff in my purse and in my car. I always have it on. It has a slight shimmer to it, moistens the lips and has that tiny tingle that excites me.

4. Cinnamon Raisin Bagel Thins – I know these have been out for awhile, but I hadn’t tried the cinnamon raisin until the other day at Costco. Toasted with a slight shmear of cream cheese is heavenly. At 110 calories, 5 grams of fiber and 25 grams of carbs, they are the perfect pre-run snack or breakfast.  Plus, they don’t make me have to poop on runs.

5. Big Star Jeans. I found these at Nordstrom Rack. They usually go for about $105, but I got them for $49. They have the tiniest bit of stretch and are low rise. They are very classy for someone like me who still wears Wranglers. Well, not really, but you get the picture.

This was my attempt at my first butt self portrait:

6. Kayak.com. Best place hands down to compare flight, hotel, vacation package costs. Draws from the major travel sites like Travelocity, Expedia, etc. In the past couple months I have booked trips to Vegas, Boston and Costa Rica. This site has been invaluable! Just note that some airlines like Southwest are not represented.

7. Charms Blow Pops – I drive a lot for my job. It is these lollipops that get me through the long hauls and the traffic. No I am not a long distance truck driver but what with my potty mouth and cussing I should be.

I love these pops because just when you think you’re done, surprise! A little wad of gum. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving. I recommend stealing them out of your kids’ trick or treat bags. Yes, we still have candy left. I am a witch and ration it piece by piece day by day. They eventually get so bored with my rules and the candy gets so stale that they forget about it.

8. These shoes. Read review HERE.

9. This necklace. My friend Carolyn gave it to me for my birthday and I haven’t taken it off since. “b” could be for “beth” or “bitch” or “best friend” or “boston” or “butt thunder queen.”  Don’t diss that hole in my neck. I swear I’ve never had a trache. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

1o. No-stem wineglasses. It’s no secret I love my wine.  These are from Crate and Barrel and run for $4.50 a piece. You can get them cheaper at Kohls. I actually bought a set of these for Ken for Christmas, but I like to buy other people gifts that are really for me. It’s a win/win.

What’s one of your favorite things? And if you say “raindrops on roses” I’ll shoot you dead.

  2. “All endurance sports are about continuing on when it feels like you have nothing left, when everything aches, when you feel done – but you’re not.”

    JUST AWESOME.....

You have a few on here like stemless wine glasses and kayak.com. Other items include my kitchen, oatmeal, friends like you, sunshine, calendar pages, love, my red running shoes family (Adidas, Brooks and now K-Swiss), my tri bike and LBS....the list could go on and on

    BUT

The one favorite thing I cannot live without is my wife. Nag? Sure. Grumpy? Sometimes. Persistent? Of course.

And with all those I still love her to pieces and will not be able to live without her....unless I'm running to kayak.com in my red shoes after just getting off the bike and carrying a glass of wine in a stemless wine glass.....just sayin'

  3. awesome list!! I was wondering about Kayak when I was planning for my NYC trip in may.
    Those jeans are sweet!

  4. I'm a huge Athleta addict, and I'll have to snap that shirt up!
Question on running books--I feel like I'm the only person I know who couldn't get into Born to Run...did you read it? like it?

  5. Love this segment! Can't live without the lip shimmer and I also bought those wine glasses for my husband for Christmas (but really for me). Found them at Cost Plus World Market. My birthday is Thursday so now I have the itch to treat myself to some Athleta gear. Are those capris also Athleta? I need some. Thanks for the reviews!

  6. Great post, makes me want to try that lip shimmer! I love kayak as well. Huge lifesaver. Some of my fav things are: Greek yogurt, garlic hummus, my macbook, Pandora radio, and warm weather for running! (Last one is not happening right now, boo)

  7. warm woolen mittens :) I will be going to Athleta today - nice find. Keep the reviews coming.

  8. Whiskers on kittens...

I love that Burt's Bees lip shine also. I left it in the console of my husband's car recently and not paying attention, he stuck some on thinking it was just lip balm. He went into work with his shimmering lips.

    I covet that Athleta top!

  9. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. John Coltrane playing "that song" for what seems like hours rivals it. Three quarter time.

    ReplyDelete
  10. yay that you love Burt's Bee lip stuff--it's a Maine company! :) I cannot live without Mt. Dew (just one each day), my hair straightener, my Keen shoes, and my ipod/pad.

    ReplyDelete
  11. We have some favorites in common: initial necklace, wine glasses (actually, I'll drink it out of a mug, I don't care), Athleta clothes, Big Star jeans.

I would have to add quinoa and whiskers on kittens to the list.

  12. Brooks' Half-Zip Tops. They're my go-to these days, whether with jeans, workout bottoms, dress pants, whatever.

I also love the no-stem wine glasses but had to invest in some plastic ones for the patio. I was still breaking them, even without the stem.

Can't wait to read Running on Empty!

  13. Oh man, Kovas took mine. :| Guess I'll have to go with Converse All-Stars and nicely painted toenails. I'm loving those jeans. You're smokin' as always!

    ReplyDelete
  14. My i-touch. I can listen to podcasts about running while I'm doing it, and take photos of the view to post on my blog. Perfecto.

Oh, and brown paper packages tied up with string...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love that shirt, those shoes and those glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love books! Real books with pages...not on nooks. I love holding my daughter's hand. Nothing can explain how great that feels. I love running and lifting weights. I feel like I have defeated the world. I love Black & White clothes...so good thing you arent in Richmond ;-). I love Pinot...and finally my fav thing is to stick my feet in the sandy beach.

    ReplyDelete
  17. One of my favorite things, sticking to running faves., is my Garmin.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love the sound I get when I whack a Faberge egg with my Stradivarius.

    ReplyDelete
  19. personally partial to whiskers on kittens, myself, he he! Other favorite things also include stemless wineglasses. They make drinking wine while lounging in a partially prone position much easier. Stemmed wine glasses are always at war with my boobs.

I enjoy my heating pad, tennis balls to massage my back and shoulders, and my bed. Beds are the best.

  20. Fun post.

I love Crate and Barrel period. Could spends hours and lot of $$$$ in that place. I love Darn Tough socks, pink lemonade Lip Smackers, Nike Dri-fit T-shirts, my Black Diamond fleece jacket, Neutrogena sunscreen, the feeling I get after working out...

    ReplyDelete
  24. okay, your bath shot got my attention on FB. ;) I just bought those big star jeans at NOrdstrom Rack too! :) I love that same Burts bees lip gloss...I use it instead of lip stick...I have 3 different colors actually. I use Burts Bees everything. Also, I have a necklace similar but I have three of the circles with my kids' initials. They are all some of my favorite things. I also love slow Monday mornings that will be gone next year when my kinder starts first grade. And a day off of running after a 17 miler in the mud yesterday. oh, and sunshine but we don't get that too often here in the winter. Peace out Beth...happy Monday!

Blow-Pops and Tootsie Pops are one of my FAVS!!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wish we had a Nordstroms Rack here I loved shopping there when I lived in DC. We are a little behind on the times here in the wild west! Blowpops are a must have for me too and I keep some on my desk so that when angry employees walk in they are distracted by the colors and promise of sugar!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've been loving the Everything Bagel thins. Then again those are the only ones I have tried.

    ReplyDelete
  36. love the jeans, and the bagel thins

    Love the tub pic!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Fun! I love favorite thing posts too.

I went through a phase where I loved the stemless glasses, but now I am back on stems. It feels more fancy.

That reminds me, went out to dinner with some friends on Sunday and the wine was served in a kid-size jucie glass. It honestly looked like apple juice! That might be taking "stemless" a tad too far...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Those jeans rock! Your blog is funny as hell, entertaining and super informative. win/win/win!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love kayak. It totally makes everything easy!

    ReplyDelete
  41. LOVE the shirt and the jeans!
Thanks for this. Yet another idea that I may have to steal for my blog!!!

One of my favorite things is the Touring Tote by Petunia Pickle Bottom. It's a high-end diaper bag that I use for a purse. Beautiful, functional and has enough room for all my stuff, my kids' stuff and my pepper spray, headphones, sports beans and flashlight so an impromptu run is always in order.

    ReplyDelete
  42. "raindrops on roses" there. Somebody had to say it. Let me know when you are coming to shoot me and I'll have fresh cookies ready. good luck getting you gun past customs. Fresh cookies, mmmmmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The shirt and jeans are REALLY cute! Right now, I couldn't live without my North Face calf high boots as they are the only shoes that I own that enable me not to fall on my arse with the world of ice in which we live.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You look pretty awesome reading that book in the bath! lol And I love those jeans. I am always on the lookout for expensive jeans that are cheap. I think you know what I mean ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Okay, I have to admit, I DID NOT write any of Running on Empty in the bathtub, but I approve of reading it any place you want. I have to admit that a pretty lady reading my book in the bathtub or out, makes it look more attractive. I'm glad you are enjoying reading the book! mu

  64. Oh, and Lululemon tata tamer sports bra...cause my tatas require a lot of taming. Actually, most days they require a crane or an anti-gravity chamber but for now, the sports bra will have to do in a pinch.
