Giveaway Winner and Humping

I spent the day at a volunteer training to work with the Dog TLC program at the Humane Society. Funny thing about that is my role will be to walk dogs. I don’t even walk my own dog (see “How I Break the Rules”), so it’s a tad ironic I’d be doing this. At least when my kids were babies I didn’t leave them in their cribs all day and go to the hospital to hold other people’s newborns. You have to draw the line somewhere.

My favorite part of the training? When the instructor said, “Don’t turn your back on a dog when they are jumping, they might mount you.”  I had images of a Chihuahua trying to get his way with me.

I did get to walk “Taz” a hound dog. He was much more well behaved than my three legged, one eyed dog, Lucky. And he did not lick his penis. Not even once.

The reason I am walking dogs is not because I want to. My daughter has a pet/animal infatuation and it is her dream to volunteer at the Humane Society. I honestly could care less, even though I do like dogs when they sleep and don’t ask anything of me. I am doing it for Emma. Remember? I do what she tells me to do.

Also today I did a two hour ride on my bike trainer. It was boring as hell. I set up a table beside the trainer with my iPad and phone. I watched Regis and Kelly, the View and a dumb Lifetime movie. Three of my worst favorite forms of cross training (worst favorite is my kid’s saying. I think it’s cute and makes me sound very educated):

Long training rides on bike trainers. I love them outside, however. Today was 30 degrees, too cold for my bones.

Water running. I will always say this is an amazing cross training, non impact option if you are injured or for variety. But it’s not my fave.

Long walks. I just get bored. I’d rather run.

Did I tell you I’m running a half marathon this weekend? Well, minus two miles. I don’t want to push it. I will do the last 11 miles of the Boulder Backroads Half Marathon as a bandit. I will wear a mask and black cape. I want to run alongside one of my trainees who is running her first half marathon as a training run/dress rehearsal for her first marathon on May 1.

The Twist running shirt giveaway winner is #4 - Kim from Just Another Mom on the Run. Congrats! Email me at shutuprun@gmail.com and I’ll let you know how to claim your prize.

What’s your worst favorite form of cross training?

What are your weekend plans? We are laying low. Sam has been sick along with the rest of 7th grade.

Do you volunteer anywhere?

  3. My Worst favorite form of cross training is lifting weights. I just hate it. I need to get back at it though.

Weekend plans: Saturday is my son's (8th) birthday. I have a 10k in the morning, so we are baking cupcakes tonight.

I teach Sunday School Every quarter. I'd say it's a blast, but I really have very little patience for other people's kids. I do it to make up for the hell my kids put the other volunteers though.

  5. As you know, I love pool running as cross training. I'm a loser, cause I don't really hate anything, unless running into a headwind counts! :) Have a great weekend! I keep meaning to tell you I have the same l/s Athleta top in Red, every time I see you in yours I want to run next to you so we can look like dominoes or checkers! :)

  7. Worst fave: I'll have to go with walking. Ouch I can hardly take it. My shins ache just thinking of it plus I'm bored out of my gourd.
I volunteer at an equestrian center where we use the horses for therapy for handicapped kids.
This weekend? SPRING BREAK BABY!!! Florida here we come!
Have a blast at the half you bandit you!

  8. I'm running the Backroads Spring Half on Sunday too! Although I am very slow so chances are you'll already be at home in bed for the night by the time I finish. Just kidding! Sort of. Hope to see you there!

Worst fave: got to go with bike trainer, or the elliptical. Even with distractions, you can't quite get away from the fact that you're staying in the same place.

  9. YAY! I WON! :) Thanks!

My worst fave form of cross training is the ARC. It kills me while I do it but I feel so good and gain so much from it.
I'm my daughter's Girl Scout troop leader. That's my main form of volunteer work these days.

  10. I was so incredibly disappointed that the humping was about DOG humping and not something else. Cest la vie I suppose.

But, then - I was rewarded with a sweet link back to my FFF post! :) thanks again!!!!

  11. My worst favorite cross training is weight lifting. I know it's good for me so I take a class to force me to devote enough time to it. As for volunteering, I do volunteer work for the Boulder County Parents of Twins club and for my church. I used to volunteer at an adopt a greyhound shelter. I never got humped but I did get peed on. I hope to see you at the race this Sunday. You'll know me by my horrible chapped nose, which I've been wiping all week hoping it will make my cold go away. Blech.

  13. In college I volunteered at the Humane Society. I got to sit with the puppies and walk the other dogs. One time I sat with a group of puppies that had just been deliced. It was pretty gross and I don't think I went back after that!

Good luck with your run this weekend!

  14. Not a big fan of the elliptical; I feel like it screams "sorority girl cardio machine" (and yes, I was in a sorority in college!)

I volunteer regularly with our local humane society; love walking the dogs, socializing the puppies, and I helped found our "pet pantry"; however I truthfully draw the line at kennel clean up...I never seem to be available for that duty!

  15. I can't be on the elliptical for more than 5 steps without getting off. It is terrible.

I volunteer with the March of Dimes and this year I am going to be a volunteer at the St. Anthony's Tri in St. Petersburg. Should be fun.

    Have fun banditing.

  18. I'm not too much into volunteering, but throughout my 20s I was a 'Big' for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

I used to hate the stationary bike, now I ride it 2 or 3 times per week.

    Enjoy your almost half marathon!

  19. You need to incorporate the dog walking with your long walk and it'd kill two birds with one stone and make one puppy very happy and very tired.

    Enjoy your bandit run!

  20. i think the elliptical is my worst favorite form of cross training. i get so bored!

  21. I hate the stationary bike...and ellipticals scare me (I feel like my knees are going to snap backwards, weird I know).

I do refugee assistance volunteering and it's AWESOME! It's great that your daughter is interested in volunteering! Though I'm sure dogs need walking, I prefer to help a Congolese family adjust to life in America.
