Is That a Pretzel Or Are You Happy to See Me?

I’m not going to lie. I’m not a huge fan of theme parks. I used to love them as a kid, but now they just seem crowded, dirty and full of screaming kids. I know, GET OFF MY LAWN!! I am such a spoiled sport now that I am old. But, give me a marathon with people puking and crawling and porta potties overflowing with god knows what and I am ALL OVER IT!

I do, however, want to give the world to my children so I take them to these places…sometimes. Like once a year if they are lucky. We are have started a rite of passage where we go to Water World on Labor Day, the last day it is open for the year. The kids look forward to the 46 water rides for about a year. I dread it for about 24 hours. I mentally prepare for a day of hot pavement, tattoo sightings, bad pizza and carrying 40 pound plastic tubes uphill to get to the start of the ride. Seriously, they need a chairlift just for the tubes. Or, I need to be rich enough to rent a tube that people carry up FOR YOU. Tube valet, baby!!!

The day was actually quite fun. We had a group of friends and the temperature was perfect at about 85 degrees. Emma looked cute. No you can’t have her, she’s mine:

I am only showing you this GROSS picture below because I don’t know what in the hell I am doing with my stomach. I guess I was sucking it in or something, but I ended up looking like I am deformed or have some deep horizontal scar. Want some BBQ sauce with those ribs?

P1100794

Sam getting ready to hit the rides with his posse. Boy needs to get outside more. He should do what we used to do and slather himself with baby oil and Crisco and get a good burn so that he has a base for the summer. Damn 50 SPF sunscreen!:

P1100795

Okay, this pic is better. Look, no scar, no sucking.

The worst tattoo I saw belonged to a woman who had two kissing dolphins tattooed in a circle around her belly button. She did not have a belly button one would want to draw attention to. In fact, I don’t think any of us need attract attention to any hole on our bodies.

By FAR the best part of the day was when my friend was eating a pretzel that took on a very familiar shape and she didn’t even know it:

What did you do for Labor Day? Eat any pretzels?

Tattoos: love or hate? Have any? Of what and where? Have you ever regretted it? I’ve actually thought about getting one, but I can’t think of a symbol/design/word that I like enough to permanently put on my body. Maybe it will dawn on me one of these days.

Theme parks: love or hate?

  1. I have your standard butterfly tramp stamp. I don't regret it though.

  2. I'm like you--can't think of any design I want on my body permanently. Oh and I drink beer on labor day while wearing my "I ride so I can drink beer" shirt.

  3. Theme parks - love, but definitely once a year.

I have 4 tattoos... I regret at least one of them.

You look awesome in your non-deformed picture. :)

  4. Wow, that pretzel totally looks like a weiner. It's awesome when unexpected things suddenly take on the shapes of genitalia... I wish I had had my camera for the epic "Dick in the Clouds" my brother and I spied a few weeks ago.

  5. Honestly, I detest theme parks! But every once in a while, you've gotta take one for the team, right?

No tats but I think they look good on SOME people.

    Go eat a cheeseburger. ; )

  6. I have a 26.2 tattoo on the side of my foot. I had some dumb ass at my kids high school football game ask me if it was a football score...seriously

  7. I have a breast cancer ribbon on my left foot. Lost my nana a couple years ago to breast cancer. Seemed like a neat idea at the time. I don't think I really regret it. I want to add another cancer awareness ribbon to it.. my dad is recovering from his battle with the cancer beast. I also want another tattoo that reads, "go the distance," I think I want it on the arch of my foot.

  8. No tattoos, but I had the same thought as Kovas - SUAR (although I hadn't come up with putting it on your butt - perfect!) I've thought about a small shamrock in a discrete place (my theory is I should always be able to hide it during a job interview). But have never gotten the guts to do it.

We do the waterpark thing once or twice a year with the kids. This year we only did it once - on the freakin' hottest day of the year (108°!) Can you say burned feet? Ugh! But the kids had a ball.

  9. I actually hate theme parks! Rides make me sick to my stomach.. I ran a race on Labor day. Looks like you had fun!

  10. Not a huge theme park fan, but go for the kiddo sometimes. I have one tattoo, in latin on the top of my foot. I got it for me, figuring (correctly) that most people wouldnt be able to read latin. Seemed like I could keep it personal that way. Unfortunately it just means people are constantly asking "what does that say". My answer varies by mood, sometimes I tell the truth, sometimes I make up bogus sayings, sometimes I just explain its personal. It can be a hassle, but I still dont regret it.

  11. I'm a Disney geek and I LOVE water rides and roller coasters, but I can't stand the crush or waiting more than 15 minutes for rides.

I do have a tattoo ... and I'm still adding to it. Most people thinks the shooting stars are just "some cute design" but it started out as the design that was put on my best friend's headstone (she passed away in a car accident our jr year of high school) and I've added another star for every important person in my life who I've lost. I think I'm up to 8 stars now. I don't mind that other people thing it's just some trashy generic design, as long as I remember it's a tribute to the people who made me who I am.

  12. I had one on my shoulder that is almost completely removed. I'll be getting it covered up with something else when $$ allows. And the usual tramp stamp. lol

  13. Wow, you do look deformed. I'm very impressed by your abs.

    No words for the pretzel.

  14. I love taking the kids to theme parks where people watching is always at its finest. I do have a tattoo of dolphins, but not around my belly button. After 4 kids Lord knows, no one would want to see that. I goes around my ankle and I love it. I plan to get another one when I do an Ironman but that will be it, no more for me.
I had abs like your once, then I woke up, rats. hahaha You look amazing.

  15. What is that a kitchen faucet?
Theme parks: used to love, no longer do, but take the kids because, well, you know.
No tats. Unless I earn an IM, there will be no tats.

  16. I have 2 tatoos. I love them. I'm not the type of person that has them everywhere. I can hide mine when needed.

  17. LOL love that pretzel!!! What are the odds?

I have five tattoos but all placed where you cannot see them fully clothed. I have a Marilyn Monroe portrait on my right thigh, it is really beautiful.

  18. I have several tattoos. One is of the logo of the first marathon that I ran. That was a big deal- and worth putting on my body forever. One of my others is a tiger- to remind me to be TOUGH and to not be a PUSSY!

  19. Our family ran the Labor Day 10K/5K Run at the Plantaion this weekend and we saw the COOLEST tattoo that went around this guys calf! He had the Iron Man symbol on the back of his leg with waves to the swimming design, waves to the cool bike design, and waves to the running design. I WISH I took a pic of it! If my daughter did....I'll be sure to post! I don't think we were the only ones in awe of his tattoo! It was a keeper and something to be proud of!

  20. LOVE the pretzel shot. That's got to go in the Best of The Blog Year album.

No tattoos - just haven't decided on anything symbolic enough. I have a belly button piercing.

The great thing about piercings, you can change the jewelry, and if you ever get tired of it you just take it out and voila! Gone.

Unless you did that weird thing where you keep putting bigger and bigger things in the piercing in your ear until it's as big as a manhole cover.

  21. I totally get your thoughts on theme parks - yucky. But I suck it up and (usually) have fun, too. Just sad I never had a happy pretzel before...I think next time I'm at the mall I'm getting one and it will be happy to see me!! Glad you had a great time...at least it wasn't 4000 degrees like it had been up to the weekend! YAY!

  22. Why is Sam calling you a Loser?

I'm okay with water parks. I don't really like sharing water/pool with other people. It's just kinda gross no matter how many chemicals they put in there. Have you seen the kind of people who go to those places? ;-)

I can't believe you would "suck it in". Do you not own a mirror? You are the defination of fit!

Tatoos. I don't have any and I'm okay with those who choose to. On some bodies they look nice.

I must say my Labor day food was not interestingly shaped.

  23. I have one tattoo and I may get another ...love a few but dislike a whole body worth...oh yea...what is my tattoo? A dog paw print ( I do love dogs but its not for that...to me it represents..Positive Attitude Wellness Success! Get it PAWS...Paw Print??? what ever?!) ha!

Your stomach looks great....some times I enjoy seeing my ribs...there are many who cannot and wish they could. ;-)

  24. I actually love them:) Um, your abs look amazing no matter what you are doing. Now I am craving pretzels. Hey, I have that exact same tattoo;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hahaha! that's great. Love how you pick those things out.

  26. You got a good day at the water park! Haven't been in a few years, they get so darn crowded!

P.S. Comment about an older post: Someone with a bit of Lyons history must have named the Fruit Loops ride. Both the Old South and Apple Valley Road (used to be the Old North) used to have apple and pear orchards. Cherries, peaches and apricots were found on occasion. Good name for that one!

  27. Great pretzel! Wished they were always shaped that way!
I have three tats and am going to someday change my dolphin into a better one so people can see it's a dolphin and not a fish! I also have Snoopy and Woodstock.
We have started going to Moab on Labor day weekend. We do as many sports as possible in the two days that we have. We always end the day in the river w/ drinks and then a shower! The drive home always sucks!

  28. Not a huge theme park fan but I usually like to go to Water World at least once a year..I missed it this year. :(

  29. I love how your post title connects to the very last line. Phallic symbols.

No tats. And, I'll take your deformed abs any day!

  30. Love the pretzel!!! Lol!

I have a little sun tattoo... Got it when I was 18 and it is hidden so I really don't regret it!

We are big Disney fans and I don't mind Busch Gardens too much!

    Love your bikini!

  31. I have lived in CO for 30 years and STILL have never been to Water World! Man, I'm deprived.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That is hilarious.

How does this stuff happen to you?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have always hated theme parks. They are so chaotic, I instantly need a xanax. Screaming kids, and long lines, probably my 2 least favorite things in this entire world. Mmm, that pretzel looks gooood!

  34. I have an awesome tattoo that I love. I got it when I was 37, so I thought about it for a long time. The two worst tattos I have seen are 1) a guy who had a rabbit on his belly and his navel was positioned just beneath the rabbit's tail and 2) a woman with fancy script lettering across her very, very low back but above the toprabbit's of her low-waist jeans and it said 'just like daddy'. Creeped me out :P

I have a total love/hate thing with amusement parks now, but I used to crave them.

    That pretzel is HILARIOUS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kate: I didn't know you liked pretzels!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Remove that second 'rabbit's'…my phone is such a spaz :P

  37. That pretzel is awesome! I love the comment about not drawing attention to any holes in your body. I think this is a life lesson really...

  38. Saw a great sticker on a truck during my run today.

Scars are tattoos with better stories.

Love it. [Especially since I'm clumsy.]

  39. Oh lord, I hate Water World. You are such a good mom, I refuse every year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cute kiddos. :)

Theme parks are fun but only once a year unless it is Disneyland. I used to own a Dland pass and it was fun to go on a couple rides then leave which was really nice when it is raining, hot, or crowded.

No tattoos yet... but I have a feeling I will be getting one at some point in my life time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I scanned through the photos first and when I actually read the post I was extremely relieved that you mentioned your odd looking stomach - I was about to get worried about you!

No tats here. I'd only get one if it had some serious meaning and even that is unlikely. I'm terrified of what they will look like when I get old!

    ReplyDelete
  42. No theme parks.
No tattoos, though I did think about one after IMC, and no not the standard m dot.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's a cute swimsuit you have!

My hubby worked at an undisclosed theme park for 7 years. He once had to clean a dump out of a drinking fountain!

    ReplyDelete
  44. We took our kids to the water park this summer - ugg. They had a good time, so it's worth it, but once a year is more than enough for me. Tattoo - you betcha! I got a celtic knot 17 years ago on my ankle. It makes me think of my mothers family heritage and I have never regretted it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It has been a while since we have been to a theme park since my kids are still pretty little. I think we are about where we can go again. Yeah, totally know what you mean about the PWT you see at those places. I loved Cedar Point as a kids, but as I got older, I started getting really grossed out at the the obesity and really wished everyone adheared to the modesty standards of my church because there is WAY to much stuff that I just don't need to see!

No tats for me, but I know you will sport an M dot one of these days. That is pretty much the only thing I would consider since my church came out a few years ago and said to not get them. If you had one before, fine, but don't get anymore.
