Welcome to the ever evolving world of the running shoe. In April, the day after the Boston Marathon, I hobbled and moaned my way to the science museum where where I saw this:
It’s an exhibit showcasing the running shoe since running was invented. Or at least since there were races and running enthusiasts and people started caring about what they wore on their feet. I’m sure the cavemen had some pretty sweet stability shoes, but no cameras were around back then to document.
My kids kept trying to pull me away from this exhibit to watch some animal giving birth, but I was fascinated!! Like Donny Osmond, the running shoe keeps evolving!
So, on that note….
Saucony is coming out with some new geometry for their latest models. The Guide 5, Triumph 9 and Hurricane 14 will have a new heel- to-toe offset of 8mm.
What’s the fuss about 8mm anyway? Isn’t this just a gimmick? NO.
This new geometry puts every runner in a more balanced, comfortable and powerful position without reducing cushioning or stability. Also, runners can more easily adjust their stride to a midfoot strike, aligning the lower body to absorb impact. Through extensive testing of different heel to forefoot offsets, Saucony was able to find what they believe is the best geometry for their most popular models. It is a significant development for the running community, as typical running shoes have had 10-12mm drops for the last 20 years.
Hey, heel strikers! We should form a support group. Looks like we could become extinct. Heel Strikers Anonymous (HSA).
Lots more good info in this video if you don’t like to or cannot read:
These shoes will not be in stores until November, but you can get a pair now. Saucony is giving away a pair of either their Guide 5s or their Triumph 9s to one winner. A $130 value!
Guide 5 – Saucony’s most popular shoe just got 1.5 oz. lighter, more flexible, and the 8mm heel-toe offset allows for a lower impact stride without compromising stability or cushion.
Triumph 9 - PowerGrid technology with PowerFoam™ delivers an ultra-cushioned ride that lets you pile on the mileage in a shoe that is lighter and faster than ever before.
To enter, leave a comment for each:

ReplyDeleteI'm a brand new runner (just did my first 5k a couple of weeks ago) and got fitted with Saucony ProGrid Glide 4s. I've never had a shoe EVER be comfortable. These are awesome!
ReplyDeleteI currently run in Asics but have been thinking about making the switch to Saucony - it's the brand I ran in back in high school.
ReplyDeleteIf I won, I'd really want to try the Guide 5.

ReplyDeleteAnd for us forefoot strikers..wider pant legs to allow for increasing calf size.

ReplyDeleteI've been running in Asics Cumulus or Brooks Ghost but working toward a more mid-foot strike, I'd like to try a lower toe-heel drop.
ReplyDeleteI run in Brooks Adrenaline (and I, too, found those sweet purple babies on Zappos!) but I'm looking for something a little lower profile...

ReplyDeleteI would try the Guide 5
ReplyDeleteI think I would go with the Guide if I won. I don't like shoes with a super-think cushion.
ReplyDeleteI currently run in the Brooks Ghost 3 and I do love them. They are light and a great shoe to train in.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteI currently run in Brooks but would love to try something new!
ReplyDeleteI currently run in New Balance shoes -- 860, I think. They're a little problematic at the moment, though; ever since I put them through the wash (...they got just a leeeeetle bit muddy), they've given me some rather impressive blisters every time I run. (Bandaids fall off, masking tape falls off, duct tape falls off and leaves bloody patches where there was once skin...) My last pair -- Mizunos -- were too tight across the top of my foot and sent stabby pains into my arches, so I'm definitely in the market for something new.
ReplyDeleteI totally follow this blog...
ReplyDeletejgsjensen/hotmail
I follow!
ReplyDeleteI run in Asics 2160's. Love 'em. No joint problems, no blisters.
ReplyDeleteI currently run in Brooks Adrenalines.
ReplyDeleteI would love love love to try the Guide 5!!!
ReplyDeleteIts a tough choice because I would love to win any of the new shoes - but I would love to Guide 5, just to try them out!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try the Guide 5!
ReplyDeleteI currently run in Asics Gel Kayano 17s and Saucony Kinvaras for speedwork
ReplyDeleteI posted on my FB page
ReplyDelete...and if I won I'd definitely go for the Guide 5s -- I have yet to perfect my stride and am a little bit worried about keeping my joints in one piece.

ReplyDeleteI have ran in Saucony Kinvara's for a year and LOVE them! Have ran 2 ultra marathons in them during that time.
ReplyDeleteCurrent road shoe is Pearl Izumi Streak II, and on trails I rock either the NB Minimus Trail or the Montrail Mountain Masochist. I'd totally be into mixing the Kinvara II or the Peregrine into the rotation, though!
ReplyDeleteI currently am running in Earth Shoe Rockets, because of the lower heal to toe to make me run more on the balls of my feet. I have run in Saucony's guite often until the heal height became too high in the past few years, some that I have run in were the original Dixons ah so many years ago, the Hurricane 9, 10 & 11 and a couple that I can't remember the names of.
ReplyDeleteWould love to try a pair of their new Ride or Triumph series either would be great.

I would probably go for the Guides if I were to win.
ReplyDeleteI would try the Triumph 9 if I won.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd like to give the Triumphs a try if I win. If I don't, I think I'll give the Kinvara's a try.

ReplyDeleteI would love to try the Triumph if I won.
ReplyDeleteI run in Asics. It has been nice not having to break them in ever. Would be cool to see about not having to break in another pair like they claim!
ReplyDeleteRunning in Nike Shox... I know, I know, the running gods are frowning upon me!
ReplyDeleteCurrently running in a sweet ORANGE saucony guide 4 (just found them and am in love!) and alternating with the Brooks adrenaline 10 (stocked up on clearance from RRS). Would LOVE the Guide 5 as I am debating trying racing flats. Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteI currently rotate 6 pairs of shoes (yes I know I have a problem I'm just waiting for the support group to be formed and I'll start the 12 step program)
ReplyDeleteSaucony Ride 3, Triumph 8, Kinvara's, and TR-5 plus my Asics 1150 and Pulse 2's. If I were to win I'd really like a pair of Triumph's the one complaint that I have about my current pair is that the seem very elevated, even in comparison to my other thick heeled shoes.
I currently run in New Balance Minimus Trails (yay) or Nike Free Run+ (so so).
ReplyDeleteI blogged it!
ReplyDeleteI'll take a pair of Glide 5's please. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI run in a pair of Asics trail runners. I like the extra stability but they are heavy. I would love to try the Triumph 9. I don't have a blog so my e-mail is gway.kirchner@hotmail.com. I'm re-posting on fb.
ReplyDeleteI currently run in Saucony Triumph and they will be the shoe for my first marathon this Sunday!!! Exciting. If I won, I would want the Guides to change it up. Your blog is SO great.
ReplyDeletebcbevans@rogers.com
I run in Brooks Glycerin 9s at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI run in Saucony Ride's. Every time I buy new shoes, I try a bunch of pairs on and eventually come back to the Ride. It just feels right on my foot.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd give the Triumph a try if I won!
ReplyDeleteI would try the Glide 5's. I'm a newish runner and currently working on the C25K program. I run in crappy adidas shoes right now, not quite willing to put out the money for more expensive shoes until I know I'm really going to stick with it.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteI FB'd this (with a link to your blog).
ReplyDeleteI don't know what shoe I'd want if I won - I'd probably have to go to my local store and try each of them on first.
ReplyDeleteI'd go for the Guide5 :)

I am desperate for new running shoes, but I just don't have the money. I currently run in some slightly too small bright blue Nikes I got on sale at the outlet store. They are fine for most things, except if I run more than a few miles my big toenail gets bruised. On the plus side, they're blue. The heel is WAY too big. I would love to try a pair of the Guide 5's.
ReplyDeleteWould love to try the Triumph 9
ReplyDelete@karend325
Would love to give the Triumph 9 a spin!
ReplyDeleteadded the blog on my google connect
ReplyDeleteI've ben using Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11's since last December (the first time I was professionally fitted and had no idea running shoes were supposed to be feel good.) More recently I grabbed a pair of Saucony Grid Fastwitch for my shorter runs in hopes they'd make me fast. And I've gotten a PR in training and in a 5K race since so I guess there is something to that name...
ReplyDeleteThe Guide 5 looks like a winner in my book.
ReplyDeleteI currently alternate between Brooks Trance 9 and Nike Pegasus 27. The Nikes I like better, more cusion and lighter. (svette@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog. Love it!! You're hilarious! (svette@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteI currently have the Nike Zoom Structure Triax 13. I could totally use a new pair of running shoes!!
ReplyDeleteI just shared on FB about your giveaway. (svette@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteI currently run in an Asics shoe of some kind. I'm slow, though. And new. And cheap. I shop the Nike outlet quite often. (PS I asked in a comment about the Champion gear availability at their outlets - the answer is YES! And I got it for 40% off! Woot!)(Also, can you list an archive in your sidebar? I almost lost my mind trying to reference a previous post. Thanks!)

ReplyDeleteI would pick the Guide 5. Because it's pretty. ;) Seriously, I need lightweight because of hip issues and that one sounds like the best.
ReplyDeletePS How's the ribs?

ReplyDeleteI currently run in Asics, but I am so ready for a change!
ReplyDeleteI run in Brooks Ravenna 2. It works well enough.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the Triumph!

ReplyDeleteI want to try the new Guides. I've been considering a lower drop shoe for a while but paranoid about injury. This sounds like the perfect compromise.
