I am a fan of Subway for the reasons most of you are: healthy choices, variety, a decent food for your money. I even interviewed the infamous Jared from Subway when he ran the NYC Marathon last year.
Recently I was sent a gift card to Subway to try their new Vanilla Yogurt Parfait. Prior to indulging in this treat, I did some research.
Description: Made fresh daily with sweet blueberries, juicy strawberries, crunchy granola and creamy yogurt:
Okay, I’m game, sounds harmless. Feeling like a big spender, I grabbed the kids and husband for a Sunday afternoon outing. Yes, we live the big time over here. Sunday afternoon at Subway. If we are lucky we fill up the gas tank on the way for some added excitement.
Once there, we got in line. I figured these were made-to-order parfaits. Until Sam pointed to refrigerated case and said, “Umm, Mom, there they are.”
First thing I noticed is the size: very small (5.8 oz). But, for 164 calories and $1.69, what do you expect?
There was a little granola pack on the top to mix in.
Ken doesn’t eat dessert anymore (WTF? Who does that? He stopped like three years ago, something about being addicted. Good for him. Me? I still am a dessert freak). He eats a lot of yogurt. I mean like wheelbarrows full. He gave it a thumbs up. Or a dirty look.
Sam liked it, but he is a thirteen year old bottomless pit and will eat dirt with whipped cream if you gave it to him.
Emma informed me she doesn’t like berries and she doesn’t like granola, so she opted for cookies, which are VERY good. Hasn’t your mama ever told you not to talk with your mouth full?
Impressions: Overall, very tasty. Fruit was slightly frozen, but that was okay. I liked it even better on top of a cookie.
Don’t mind my chlorine damaged, stringy hair. I never said I looked pretty on Sunday afternoons.
Conclusion: I don’t think I would make a special trip to Subway just for the parfait, but it is a low cal, low fat, inexpensive option to go with your sandwich.
Want to try one or get your favorite sandwich for free? I have a $10 Subway gift card to give away. To enter (comment for each):
- Tell me your favorite “healthier dessert” + 1 entry

I’ll pick a random winner on Wednesday.
Fine print:

- Subway provided me with a giftcard and the giveaway giftcard. I paid nothing for them

"Healthy dessert," huh? Hmm, I don't know if I do that...I guess Trader Joe's soy vanilla ice cream counts right? It's pretty delish! (And even better on top of a brownie and drizzled with chocolate sauce...)
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow, obvi! :)
ReplyDeleteFRUIT. I will eat it until I shit myself.
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow your ass off, yo.
ReplyDeleteSince my zucchini plant in the garden is huge, and I just found an 18" zucchini friday, my "healthy dessert" right now is chocolate zucchini muffins.
ReplyDeleteI am a blog follower.
ReplyDeleteAre Twinkies good for you? No?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am with your husband on this one. I can't have dessert or I just go hog wild and stuff my face with cookies until I'm sick.
I have been opting for a glass of chocolate milk in the evening instead (lowfat but does include sugar because I am, actually, a junkie).
I like peaches with cottage cheese.
ReplyDeleteI subscribe to your blog on Google Reader.

ReplyDeleteis it just me or is this the same as a yogurt parfait from mc d's for 69 cents more?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite "healthy" dessert, at least in the summer, are the popsicles made with real fruit and splenda, that have around 30 calories. I also love a 100 calorie bag of kettle corn for a sweet treat, but more as a snack than a dessert.
ReplyDeleteI once ate subway for lunch every day for 2 months straight, with one weekend off in the middle. Let's just say that lunch options in the boonies of Alberta are very limited and leave it there. So, no thank you, I do not want a subway coupon. I do not want it in a plane, or on a train, or on a boat, and certainly not with a goat.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite healthy dessert is Oikos nonfat Greek yogurt with grilled peaches and grilled pineapple, a Tbsp of chopped toasted pecans and a teeny drizzle of honey. Awesome in the summertime! YUM!
ReplyDeleteYes, I totally follow you and have suggested your page to beaucoup friends.
I don't tweet (or "twat"...I hope that was just a typo!), just FB.
I love yogurt and granola.
ReplyDeleteMy healthy dessert is a square of Endangered Species 72% dark chocolate bar. Sometimes dipped in peanut butter.
ReplyDeleteI FB u.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to find I didn't follow you with GFC, but I do now.
ReplyDeletemy fav healthier dessert is Activia strawberry yogurt. In fact, it's so healthy, i hafta eat around the strawberries since i don't want to consume an actual fruit with my yogurt! (I'm like Emma that way...)
ReplyDeletei follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteDon't want the gift card but that size is about the same size as a container of greek yogurt so in all actuality it is the right size.
ReplyDeleteAre companies finally making the correct serving sizes? That would be awesome.
OK, I just read Rose's two comments and just farted from laughing so hard.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rose.....good thing I am home.

For healthy desserts I like strawberries dipped in ff whip cream or a no sugar added fudgecicle. Or trader joes reduced fat brownies (made with yogurt). But mostly I say screw it and have a small portion of something good.
ReplyDeleteYour hubz needs therapy- no desert- there must have been a hush hush incident with an m and m and a snickers bar. He needs to work past it. Dont blame all sugar for one not so sweet incident.
Jello Fat Free Chocolate Pudding mix with skim milk - makes me feel like I'm cheating and gets in some calcium (since I am not really a milk drinker - this is a good thing). Occassionally I make the banana pudding the same way and add fresh bananas - yum!
ReplyDeletefrozen berries with a dollop of cool whip on top. Holy YUM. also, i like those fancy red licorice bites from Trader Joe's - which I pretend are healthy just because they come from Trader Joe's.
ReplyDeleteYes, I follow. Mostly to hear about the latest crazy place you sharted.
ReplyDeletefave healthy dessert...plain greek yogurt with fresh blueberries and granola
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower.
ReplyDeleteI tweeted about the contest.
ReplyDeleteOf course I follow you! As for a 'healthy' dessert, I frequently make fruit crisps. It's just fresh or frozen fruit (usually a combination of black and blueberries) with a crisp topping. the topping consists of oatmeal, whole wheat flour, brown sugar and either olive oil or good old butter. It kind of loses it healthiness when you top it with ice cream, but my intentions are always good.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite healthy dessert is two pieces of Dove's dark chocolate Promises. Hey, it's healthy because it's only two pieces. And that whole dark chocolate thing. But mostly because I keep it to two pieces.

ReplyDeleteFav healthier dessert is dipping an apple in melted PB.

ReplyDeleteI love my cobblers I make. Especailly the one in the crock pot!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite healthy dessert is apples and peanut butter or almond butter
ReplyDeleteJust provided the link in my blog too!
ReplyDeleteHealthier dessert: Angel food cake with seasonal fruit any way you like it (stewed, raw, grilled, canned) and unsweetened whipping cream. I pull that out at nearly every dinner I host. Sometimes I even chunk the cake and make pretty little dessert cups (usually, that's too much effort).

ReplyDeleteI don't have too many "healthier" desserts....maybe ice cream with only a little chocolate syrup??
ReplyDeleteI love Greek yogurt with fruit or with chocolate sauce. I discovered the joy of chocolate sauce on yogurt when we were moving and those were the only two things left in the fridge.

ReplyDeleteHealthy Dessert? uh... frozen yogurt with berries (unhealthy - chocolate with chocolate and chocolate on top)
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog.

ReplyDeleteWait. Your well beloved husband gave up dessert 3 years ago, and you only just noticed NOW? you are trying for the " fool some of the people some of the time" thing, aren't you?

ReplyDeleteI'm like Ken, I haven't eaten dessert for 3 years. I was addicted as well and that's part of what helped me lose 60 pounds in 10 months. I will never eat desserts again- or candy, soda, or anything with high sugar added to it.
ReplyDeleteInstead? I eat fruit! or I'll have a coffee as well.
