Zipfizz Review and Giveaway

On tap for me today was a six mile early morning run. It was quite pleasant and seasonably warm with temps at about 24*.  People always comment that I wear capris when it’s so cold. Weird, but my legs and feet never get cold.

P1110694

I did almost fall on my ass several times on the hard packed snow and ice, but I skillfully slid around without going down. All I want for Christmas is my two hips not broken. I already have my two front teeth even if they are crowns. If I never told you about my accident when I was twelve that knocked out several teeth, I promise I will some time. I know twelve is  a little young to get into a bar brawl, but I was an early bloomer.

I will not talk about poop in this post. I will not talk about poop in this post. Word on the street is that poop talk is “getting old.” How does that subject get old? I mean, you will poop for your entire life, so as far as I am concerned, it’s not old until you die and don’t/can’t do it anymore. As for those who are too embarrassed or grossed out to talk or read about it, I don’t know what to tell you. There are lots of poop-free blogs out there. I cannot, however, help you avoid Imodium and Maalox commercials on TV. Or stop your body from producing it’s own waste. And, for the record – I have plenty of poop free posts, so just pick and choose.

Before I ran I drank some Zipfizz energy drink. I was sent a sample pack of Zipfizz to try out.

This one is pink lemonade flavor:

P1110695

Zipfizz’s claim to fame is that it “is the only healthy energy drink-mix powder in a tube.” I’m not sure why we need drink powder in a tube, but okay, I’ll roll with it. Zipfizz is said to “deliver an advanced formula that provides a significant amount of vitamins, fewer calories, lower carbohydrates and superior taste!”

Nutritional Info:image

Zipfizz comes in five flavors:  Berry, Citrus, Grape, Orange Soda, and Pink Lemonade. There is also a featured flavor: creamsicle. Zipfizz has zero grams of sugar and is sweetened with Xylitol and Sucralose. Xylitol is a naturally occurring, low-calorie sugar substitute found in berries, fruits and birch bark. It has 100 mgs of caffeine from natural sources of green tea and Guarana (a plant in the maple family).

The cost is $29.99 for 30 tubes at Costco, plus shipping. This averages about $1.00 per tube. If you buy from the Zipfizz website, it is more expensive.

Review:

Taste: The first flavor I tasted was orange and I did not care for it at all. It was too sweet and tasted very artificial. I did, however, really like the pink lemonade flavor. I also tried the creamsicle flavor which tasted exactly like a liquid orange creamsicle ice cream bar. Yum. Zipfizz is slightly effervescent, a big bonus.  I really love some bubbly in my drinks. Too bad champagne is not a sport’s drink.

Nutritional Aspects: Zipfizz labels their drink a “healthy” because it has no fat or sugar and is high in vitamins and electrolytes. It is especially high in Vitamin B12, which is supposed to give you energy. I always thought that your body did not need much B12 to get the benefits, and that the excess was just peed out. It seems that 41,667% of one vitamin is excessive. Recommended daily intake is 2.4 mcg. Zipfizz has 2,500 mcg. I get annoyed with companies packing drinks and food full of vitamins and nutrients that are in much higher amounts than our bodies need or can sometimes even handle. Just a personal pet peeve.  While there is some good stuff in this drink, these are nutrients that, IMHO, can easily be obtained by eating a balanced diet and/ or taking a daily supplement.

Cost: Although $1.00 per serving might seem high, the price is comparable, if not cheaper, to buying a 20 oz bottle of Gatorade or another sport’s drink. Additionally, it has lots more stuff in it and does not have the added sugar.

Bottom Line: An affordable sport’s/energy drink with a decent taste (depending on the flavor). The tube is small and makes it convenient to bring it on the go. Zipfizz can be purchased at many retailers including Costco, REI and Target, so it is readily available.

  1. I don't like sports drinks so I don't have a favorite. I prefer water, but know that sometimes I need more. I usually grab Gatorade and make a face while drinking. I would like to try Zippfizz. I like pink lemonade so that is the reason.
Oh, I will be RT your blog.

  2. I don't necessarily have a fave, but I do always water them down. Usually I get Gatorade, but I always go with the half water/half drink mixture so it's a little less sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I usually use nuun or G2 (depending on what is cheaper), but I'm always looking for tasty alternatives.

PS - If someone is tired of poop, then I guess they'll just have to be tired of it for the rest of their life (unless they have one of those stomach pump thingys).

  16. Usually prefer water but I have used Nuun and would use it again. Ooo...and there's one by Hammer that I used but haven't been able to find it again (probably cuz I can't remember what the heck it's called!)

  22. I don't have a fav sports drink - I am still looking for my fav. That is why I would like to try zipfizz.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Uh, they're all gross. I think I can tolerate purple gatorade if I have to (and that's only when it's a bajillion degrees out and I was playing tennis) but I much prefer water. This might be good to try out, though!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Typically I'm a water girl but sometimes I'll put V8 in my water bottles on my bike. I'd love to try something new!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Really into G2 but want to try this to shake up my sports drink options a bit!

    ReplyDelete
  26. NUUN comes in a very similar tube, so I'm not sure how they can advertise that they are the only sports drink packaged that way. Not that it should really matter.

    ReplyDelete
  27. my favorite sports drink is Amino Vital which has lots of amino acid chain thingy. would love to find something new that's also available at Costco!

    ReplyDelete
  28. My favorite is cytomax. It does cause me some GI issues. I am always looking for a replacement. I would like to try it for sure!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Normally I drink Gatorade on my long runs, just because most races seem to offer this. I would love to try Zippfizz to see if my stomach will tolerate it better than Gatorade. I do not like to poop during my runs (ok, that sentence just sounds wrong!!!)!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Layne: I think they say the are the only "powdered" drink since Nuun are in tabs.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't really have a preference, since I usually drink water...but it's worth a try and the bottle would come in handy on the go!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am a Nuun girl. I'd give Zipfizz a try because I love pink lemonade!

    ReplyDelete
  33. 24 F (-4 C) is warm for most of the year.

Poop never gets old. Ever. I say, let if fall where it falls and deal with it. 12 is a bit young for a bar fight; I just avoided one when I was 15. There are times it's good to be tall and husky.

This IS an entry for Zipfizz, even if I don't need that much B12. They must have had a deal on it or something.

As for commercial drinks, Nuun is good stuff. But my fave drink starts with lemon tea, add a pinch or two of salt, lots of honey, then orange juice to taste. Proportions vary depending on temperature, distance of ride, and what other food is available. Sometimes I drop in a Nuun and it all goes great.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I usually drink G2 because that's what the boyfriend drinks and I'm too lazy to buy something different. I'm always up for trying new sports drinks, though, and definitely one that tastes like creamsicles.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I drink Gatorade, but it's full of sugar. I totally want to try Zippfizz because of the no sugar and the B12.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm a melon HEED girl. I'd try this one because it doesn't have sugar in it, and the sugar in drinks like Gatorade usually jack me up.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My favorite is FRS low-cal orange. I like the low sugar content, watered down and easy powder pack. I want to try zipfizz to see how it compares. I see it in Costco but do not want to buy it if I do not like the taste.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My favorite is G2, but I'd like to try ZippFizz because I really don't need the sugar in G2.

PS - who had a problem with poop jokes? They funny and appeal to everyone from 7 year olds to 57 year olds!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I drink what is available in terms of sports drink and I usually go with water because it is always a safe choice, but I'd like to give Zipfizz a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not a huge sports drink drinker (redundant??) -- I do drink Nuun from time to time, however.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, since you choose not to mention poop in this post, I will. I am a gatorade girl. Always have been and, about a couple of weeks ago, I learned that I probably always will be. Here's the scene: out for a 10 mile run in the a.m.; gatorade was gone; had a pack of nunn to try in my belt; filled up my bottle with water and nunn; and headed out. Literally, 5 minutes after my first sip, I knew I was in trouble. The stomach started making strange noises. I didn't have to hit the bushes, on this day, but I did walk the remaining 2 miles back home, just to be safe. It wasn't pretty when I got back. I attribute it to the bubbly in the nunn that I was not use to and apparently can't handle. I would imagine this product would be similar to Nunn. Gatorade's the only way for me...if I want to stay light in the pants.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like low-calorie gatorade. I want to try this because I love trying new drinks! =)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I like the poop talk, it never gets old to the Foxes as it is an important thing to do before any run! I like Gatorade and have all of my life. I think that makes me old and uncool, so I think I need to try the Zippfizz to make me have a little more zip in my old ass step!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Keep the poop coming! Muhahahaha :) Sorry I couldn't help myself.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My favorite is Nuun, but I love trying new sport drinks. I love pink lemonade flavored drinks!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I too love the pink lemonade nuun. Electrolyte drinks are kind of my "thing" because of my heart issue, and because I am a grown woman who should not be subjected to drinking Pedialyte.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I am always up to trying out new sports drinks! I usually stick to good old h2o but every now and then will have a gatorade!

  49. I appreciate the honesty with which you review this product. I wonder if there is a downside to consuming over 40,000% of a certain vitamin? Off to google 'sucralose'... I really did like your review :)

  50. These CO temps are fantastic! 61 degrees for my run today! I'll take it...

    ReplyDelete
  51. (Unrelated to the giveaway) For the record, I come to this blog to read about poop. If you didn't post about it, I would be SAD!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am supposed to do my Zipfizz review this week. I just hated it. I feel bad to give it such a review. it tasted really gross.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm usually not a sports drink fan because of all the sugar--but I know after a hard, long run, we need to replenish all of our electrolytes. I'm recently a fan of Cytomax because it isn't super sweet like Gatorade or Powerade (I usually have to water it down) and it's super easy to drink. I want to try ZipFizz because of its portability! Much easier to carry around individual packets instead of large containers of powder.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm partial to G2 but tried Nuun not too long ago and liked the taste of one of the flavors! Looking for something good for my Ironman training!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'd like to try zippfizz. I mostly drink water but hate the sugar sports drinks.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Before a race, I will drink a 5 hour energy, then I feel like I can just run forever! I have also tried the Market Pantry energy drinks. Those give you a pretty good energy buzz too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Most of my workouts aren't really long enough to justify sports drinks (still new at all of this) so most of the time I stick with plain water. During my first tri, I did go with some Gatorade my sis gave me since I was out there for a while (even for a sprint) and it was hot. I guess I'd be interested in trying something else b/c at some point I might need a "go to" drink and I like that it is something I can get locally (we have a Target).

    ReplyDelete
  60. I like powerade zero or just coconut water. I like the idea of being able to mix it into my water though!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. My husband started picking up ZipFizz at Costco a couple of months ago! Pink lemonade is the flavor he doesn't like; I think it's ok if I add extra water.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have only ever tried Gatorade and didn't care for it so would like to try a new one.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I linked your post to my blog sidebar

    ReplyDelete
  64. My favorite sports s=drinks are Nuun and coconut water and Rehydrate. I also love spark energy drink

    ReplyDelete
  65. Nuun - currently like the berry flavor best. And Powerade Zero - currently like the green and fruit punch the best.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I always put a propel zero grape flavor in my water. I drink about 5 a day.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I actually like Advocare's "Spark" in fruit punch the best. Does Advocare count as a sports drink? Thanks Beth!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I've tried a billion drinks (but not Zipfizz), and can't decide what I like. Just anything that doesn't taste gross when I'm sweating!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I usually drink propel because it is lower cal, less sugar and had some B vitamins that are good for old people like me! (just past pre-menopause...sort of) I would like to try Zippfizz because it has always griped me that sports/energy drinks do not have much potassium in them and Zippfizz does. If I win and like it - I'll be ordering some!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love fruit punch gatorade, or lemon lime. The old reliable. I cannot do anything with orange or grape flavor - no idea why!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I usually water down my sports drink 50% water/50% sports drink because it's too sweet. I'll try pretty much any flavor, was liking the Strawberry Lemonade Powerade for my long runs this fall.

I'd like to try Zipfizz for the "fizz" :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Does powerade count? :)

  73. not a sports drink fan i would rather have water, but the pink lemonade would be my fav because it would remind me of summer and the warm days

  75. I like Nuun but would love to try others. I want to try Zippfizz but it has the best name ever!! It is just fun to say :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Power Zero or Gatorade, but unless I'm going 10 or more miles I usually water them down.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I usually like just water on runs, because sports drinks leave a yucky taste in my mouth. I pick Gatorade if I must have something beyond water (purple Gatorade).

PS Poop doesn't offend. I'm a RN and it doesn't take much to gross me out. :) I suck trachs or wipe butts and go back to eating often. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Lately I've really enjoyed Nuun, so I'd love to try this and see if I like it better. At races I tend to be able to tolerate whatever is offered, but prefer Gatorade.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm a nuun girl. I would try Zippfizz if it were free....

    ReplyDelete
  80. My favorite? Well it's not really an energy drink, but electrolyte replacement. Water with a Hammer Endurolytes Fizz Tablet. Always love trying new products though! Count me in!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I usually have Powerade around the house when I need something more than just plain water. I want to try it because I am cheap and this is free. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am a Nuun lover. But I've been hearing about Zipfizz and I'd love to try it in my ultra run training.

    Tweeted!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I haven't really tried sports drinks beyond Gatorade, which I don't care for much. Unless VitaminWater counts.

I usually go with water or milk, but the pink lemonade and little space-age tubes sound kind of cool.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love Zipfizz....I have never used it as a sport drink but for days when I couldn't get my coffee in.

    ReplyDelete
  85. My favorite drink is coconut water, which I suppose isn't really a sports drink. I would love to try the orange creamicles flavor, though!

  87. I prefer gatorade but try a variety when I can since races don't always offer my favorite. Zippfizz is intriguing...

    ReplyDelete
  88. I usually stick with gatorade or powerade. I'm not a fan of all the sugar but came to learn that it's necessary on long runs. Plus if I have an upcoming race I practice with what will be on the course. I'd really like to try a sports drink that doesn't have all the sugar.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love my Nuun but love tovtry new products! Lemon-Lime is the best!

    ReplyDelete
  90. My favorite is Gu Brew, but I'm always looking to find something better!

    ReplyDelete
  91. I also like the Nuun- tried another brand, but come back to it. Always looking for a new taste... I would like to try the Zippfizz.
BTW- keep blogging about poop- it's what keeps me laughing....

    ReplyDelete
  92. I can only drink a small amount of Nuun or VitaminWater while I run...or I wind up with a different kind of runs! Gee, sorry, did I mention poop, too? My fave flavor is pink lemonade and I'm a firm believer that all beverages should have bubbles =}

    ReplyDelete
  93. I usually drink Powerade Zero, but would love to try Zippfizz for something different.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I train with Powerade and Powerade Zero because most local races use it. I like Powerade better than the zero...my body seems to like the extra sugar. I LOVE trying new things!

    ReplyDelete
  95. My favorite energy drink is PowerAde Zero in the blue flavor, or orange. I would like to try Zippfizz because there are more flavors and I would like to see how my tummy reacts to the fizzy-ness of it

    ReplyDelete
  96. I've noticed that you often have (partially) bare legs when it's c-c-c-cold. Hubs is the same way. He is still in shorts, though he is all bundled on top with these huge mittens.

    ReplyDelete
  97. usually stick with water but i like coconut water when a need a little more during the sweaty summers:)also nuun is pretty good, so 'id like to try the zippfizz (pink lemonade!)

    ReplyDelete
  98. I am not really a fan of sports drinks. I will drink Gatorade powder sticks. I find most sports drinks too sweet. At least with the powder I can control how much I put in my water.

I would like to try Zippfizz because it is fizzy. I like that in a drink and haven't seen any fizzy sports drinks before. I think it is a cool idea.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Would love to try the Zippfizz. Creamsicle sounds very interesting. I'm normally a Nuun guy. Left your giveaway on my blog on the top of the right hand side.

  100. LOVE your posts and I am not at ALL offended by the poop talk. It actually makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one!!! I can't run two miles without needing to poop, no matter what I've tried (diet, immodium, you name it!)!

Oh, about the sports drinks? I can't do ANY ~ they make me poop more!!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  101. I don't have a favorite sports drink because I can't find any that aren't way too sweet. I usually just dump half a package of crystal light in some water and call it good! I want to try Zipfizz because maybe it won't be too sweet for me. And I'll look super cool carrying around that water bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I talked about them on facebook. But I already follow you (because SUAR told me to). That should get me like 3 entries, right?!

  109. My fave sports drink is Nuun and of course chocolate milk for recovery. I would like to try the Zipfizz to see if I got the same or better results than with the Nuun.

  111. I like most of the G2 flavors but unfortunately I think all the Gatorade products give me indigestion when I run. I usually down a packet of EmergenC before a race but I mainly rely on gels and chews.

I'd like to try Zipfizz because I'm always on the lookout for something I can use while running that doesn't give me indigestion. Love the potassium levels - but yep not sold on the crazy amounts of B12.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Lately I have been on a huge Nuun kick, but I would love to try another similar product.

    ReplyDelete
  113. My favorite sports drink is Nuun, but the freshness of the tablets is inconsistent. Zip fizz would be nice to try.

    ReplyDelete
  114. My favorite sports drink right now is Powerade Zero in Mixed Berry. Love it! I'd like to try Zippfizz to see how it compares, especially since I love carbonated drinks (I know, soda is no good).

I tweeted this post under username faith120604. :)

    ReplyDelete
  115. I guess my favourite sports drink would be Gatorade, but that's really only because I haven't tried others. I would love to try Zippfizz...to try something new...for the bubbles....and I like the name!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I don't know that I have a favorite sports drink, but when water isn't enough, my go-to is Gatorade/G2 (I'm not very original)!
I'd like to try Zipfizz because YOUR BLOG is the first I've read of it - and though they seem to have gone slightly overboard with vitamins, I DO like the fact that they added some nutrients in addition to the electrolytes!
(Also, it's funny to me that the previous comment was left by another Brandi - "our" name typically isn't the most common! Unless I've lost my mind though, we are - in fact - different people!!)
P.s. Keep the poop-talk coming! Your blog wouldn't be the same if it were to suddenly go away! :)
