Today I had a tragedy. Due to way too much snow/slush/messy crap still on the ground, I found myself on a treadmill at the gym again this morning. This makes like 95 times in the past week, or it feels that way.
One of the things that makes the ‘mill bearable is music. I put in my ear buds, and SHIT. Are you kidding me? No battery charge. When will technology get advanced enough so I never have to remember to charge stuff? I almost turned around, slapped the guy behind me on the bike (not that he deserved it, but someone has to get the brunt of my unhappiness), and stormed out the door. However, I dug deep for inner strength, found it, and began my workout anyway.
One of my favorite things to do on the treadmill to keep it interesting (besides playing the Outlast Game) is doing hill work. This is one thing that is much easier to do on a treadmill than on the trails or road. I put the setting on “random” which means that every minute or so the incline changes. I put it on a tough setting, so that when the incline does change, it's pretty significant. I then choose my speed and don’t change it throughout the workout. This means that whether the incline is 0% or 5%, I am challenging myself to keep my same pace. It is not easy. Today’s workout was five miles at 6.8 mph (8:49 min/mile), which is a piece of pound cake while it’s on 0% incline, and a piece of hard ass shit when it’s on 5%. Or, maybe I am just a pussy.
Damn! but a hard, sweat fest is fun and satisfying (TWSS).
I rushed home, showered, and threw some 15 Bean Soup in the crockpot (I soaked the beans overnight) before heading to work. Best hearty, winter soup EVER. Guaranteed to promote flatulence! Says so on the label.
On my drive I saw this bumper sticker on someone's car and it make me laugh out loud (LOL!!). Yes, I am in fifth grade, thanks for asking.
By the way, the third installment of the Refuel with Chocolate Milk videos from Vegas was posted yesterday HERE. You can see what a dork I look like when I am trying to be serious and thoughtful. I do way better being immature and crude. The first and second episodes are HERE and HERE if you care. I find them entertaining and not just because I’m in them. Refuel did a great job putting these together. There are two more to come!
When the weather makes it almost impossible to run outside, do you treadmill-it or just skip it? Be honest. I usually weather the bad weather (wind, rain, cold temps, blistering hot temps, snow). But if it’s really slick outside I go indoors because no run is worth breaking a bone and being laid up for months with the pussy posse. I hardly ever just skip it.
Do you always run with music? I do. It motivates me. I only train without it if the race I’m training for doesn’t allow iPods.
Best bumper sticker you’ve ever seen? When I was a kid I loved “Save gas, fart in a jar” and “Is that your face or did your neck throw up?” Not sure why. Still pretty funny. Yep, still in 5th grade.
SUAR
Love the bumper sticker!!
ReplyDeleteWill say...I tried my first choc milk after my run...holy yum!
And hellz yes....treadmill!!
You HAVE to get a kindle fire or something to watch movies on the mill. Really, it saves me big time.
ReplyDeleteYou mean you have to be in fifth grade to enjoy a good fart joke? That's it - I have to go back to primary school for the rest of my life. I love fart jokes (almost as much as I love doing a good one) and I never intend to grow out of that.
ReplyDeleteI run on the treadmill for most of my miles since it is hard to get away with young kids. I change up the incline, watch youtube videos, and music helps too. All my goals and medals are in front of me so I glance at that often. And I just think of how great I'll feel when I'm done. I'm going to try the choc milk thing this week. Music is relatively new for me when it comes to running with it. Love your new pic you have posted on your blog (top).
ReplyDeleteOk, your treadmill workout beats the crap out of mine.
ReplyDeleteMusic is a must for indoor running and an option for outdoor running.
I run outside. I just cannot do the dreadmill unless the smog/air quality is so bad that it hurts my lungs to breathe outside. I've fallen too many times on the dreadmill so there is always an inherent danger of leg fracture. Ya gotta weigh these things out...
ReplyDeleteI spend equal time outside and on the TM. It's more likely my schedule than the weather that will drive me indoors. It's hard to do a tempo run or speed work while pushing a jogger, and my daughter loves the ladies at the gym's day care so much. And I always run with my music. I'm constantly adding songs and creating playlists for spin class, anyway, so I like to take those playlists and see how they translate to a running workout. I can't run flat, either, so I alternate fartleks with hill intervals, depending on the tempo of the song that's playing.
ReplyDeleteSave Gas, Fart in a Jar! Ahahah! That kills me! Don't worry, I'm 5 too. Someone at work used the words "dutch oven" the other day (in the literal sense) and I started laughing.
ReplyDeleteI love my treadmill, and I am glad there is someone out there like Emz to make me feel less alone in this. During these winter months it's dark when I get off work and I must admit, running while watching TV seems way more appealing than running in the dark with potential creepers lurking in the bushes. But that's just me.
And I listen to music like 25% of the time.
Ah the treadmill isn't always terrible; it can be great people watching and good "melt your brain tv time".
ReplyDeleteI feel you about running with music on the treadmill. I'm a little too a.d.d. to be on there without it. Otherwise if I'm outside or during a race I can usually run without music but I would prefer to have my ipod with me.
ReplyDeleteThose bumper stickers crack my ass!
ReplyDeleteThis wind today SUCKS! Smart move on the TM! I meet a client at the gym then headed over to CC State park. Parked and ran about 9 very slow miles. Got to my parked car (at the gym) and the key wouldn't work. WHATTTT??? I had a different car that I never use (the jobless one's) but the key drove me there so why wouldn't it open the door? But it wouldn't. So I got to run another 3 miles home and convinced my reluctant 16 year old, license-less son, to take my neighbor's car (thankfully, we're dog sitting for them this week) and go get locked car. He was so scared he was going to get pulled over. I told him I'd go to jail for him...I did NOT want to ride my bike back to my car in this ridiculous wind. I regret not running on the treadmill!!!!
ReplyDeleteI watched the videos yesterday and loved them!
ReplyDeleteI work out on the treadmill a lot because I'm a rain/snow/ice /wind major wimp. I've come to not hate the treadmill but music is mandatory. Not sure I can do much more than 2 miles sans music… but never really tried.
Last winter I skipped a few because I was driving an ancient car that would make running safer than driving in bad weather, but with a new set of wheels this year, as long as I can get the car out of the driveway - no excuses!
ReplyDeleteUm...5% is out of control, way to go!!! I am going to have to try your bean soup. Have a great day Beth!!!
ReplyDeleteI've forever banned the dreadmill since I got hooked last year and never did road runs. Now I refuse to let my legs do that again, so I either take my chances or cross train like a mother trucker. I think I'd die if I did your intensity on the dreadmill...making it a deadmill instead.
ReplyDeleteAs for music--heck yeah! I always cuss my iPod when it dies at the start of a run, just as a really good song is half way through. Otherwise though, I'm pretty fond of it.
I run at 3am most mornings, so I put lots of miles on the treadmill. Unless I am doing a sprint workout- I always listen to music.
ReplyDeleteFifth grade is a good place to hang out.
ReplyDeleteI will always avoid the treadmill when I can. Yesterday I was in Ohio and it was icy. Thankfully I threw my yaktrax in the car just before I left for the trip, so was able to get out there. Had the trail to myself and really enjoyed the run. I think I'd die if I were in your shoes and forgot music for the treadmill! Never use it on the road, however. Just me.
I run almost exclusively on the treadmill from Dec - March because I run very early in the morning and in the winter, with the ice and snow, it's often dangerous to run in the dark. It really doesn't bother me much, I often get more miles in since I can easily change into shorts and tshirt instead of piling on layers of clothes. I run at home and watch tv, often upping the speed during commercials.
ReplyDeleteGRRRRR I am hating the roads right now! They are such a mix of ice/packed snow and clear roads that there is no way I can chance running in the dark in the morning. Go AWAY! :)
ReplyDeleteI run regardless of the weather, a lot of times it ends up being on the treadmill because I am creeped out by going out before 4:30 am, too many weirdos, or the kids are home with me and I can't leave them unattended.
ReplyDeleteLove 15 bean soup!! Soaking actually lowers the flatulance quotient so you did everyone a favor by soaking. We're having beans on Sunday and I'm excited, love them!
My music and treadmill habits depend on the distance. If it's crappy weather and I have 5 miles or less, I treadmill it. If it's longer, I usually bail until the weather improves. As for music, I only listen to music when I have to treadmill it (so I don't have to listen to people panting on the treadmills nearby) or if I'm outside and have to go more than 9 miles and if I'm by myself.
ReplyDeleteI will run outside if it's cold, but not if it's really windy -- I HATE the cold air whipping in my face! And I don't run in snow because I don't have those traction thingys and I'm afraid of falling. I'm on the TM more than I want to be, but at least it's something!
ReplyDeleteI usually listen to music. Once in a while I go without, though, and I do find it refreshing.
Only run w/ music on the tready. Too much overload of the sensations when i run outside, so always run and just enjoy the silence and the nature around me. 15 bean soup rocks, but only when my mom makes it.
ReplyDeleteI always run with music (I don't run very many races yet).
ReplyDeleteBest bumper sticker ( on my uncle's car): I may be fat but you're ugly and I can diet. True story.
Best recent one that oddly made me think of you: I know I'm speeding but I really have to poop.
15 bean soup is my absolute fav, and it's $1.49 a bag! I eat an unholy amount of dried beans. Good thing my digestion is strong and sturdy.
ReplyDeleteBest bumper sticker I ever saw was yellow with black letters stating "CAUTION! Blind Guy Driving!" I was mulling that over for several minutes then I got the opportunity to pull alongside the van and it was a guy who sells and installs window blinds.
ReplyDeleteHey!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about doing "hills" on the mill. I read an article about fergie (blackeyedpeas) that she walks "slow" on "high" incline to keep her, um lets just say "assets" in the spectacular shape that they are in! Nuff said! hehe...
I love your blog! you ROCK!
If it's really crappy out, icy sidewalks or colder than about -35C I'll skip the workout and go for a swim or a bike ride instead. Though now that I have a membership at a place that has an indoor track, I might try that.
ReplyDeleteI have never run with music and can't imagine doing so. Even on the spin trainer I am more likely to have silence than music playing.
Chocolate milk post-workout = heaven in a glass. Mmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI like music more now that I am teaching fitness classes...but when I'm running outside, I don't always need it.
I've run about 1600mi this year and less then 50 of those have been on a treadmill, and that was in August - it was too hot to run outside (-:
ReplyDeleteI rarely run with music, that time is reserved for solving all the worlds problems!
bad weather...??? feeling a little guilty...beautiful, sunny 80 degrees here.Ran in my usual shorts and sport tank WITH my music. When my mp3 went dead a few weeks ago, I plugged my headphones into my phone and listened to the music I have downloaded on it. It would take hell to freeze over to get me back on the dreadmill. It sits in the corner of my room and I store 2 huge duffle bags of running gear on it.
ReplyDeleteI should have opted for the treadmill over this wind. I felt every 44mph gust out there. But if there is anything I hate more than wind, it's the treadmill. So...
ReplyDeleteI can 100% relate to finding the dead iPod. Luckily the TMs at my gym have a plug in so you can listen to whatever is on TV. I always run with music and usually sing along as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's never yucky enough to not run here. Well, almost never. I'm not gloating just telling the truth.
ReplyDeleteAnd... best bumpersticker... "I found it, and my finger stinks." (It was a mocking of the "I found it" born-again bumperstickers which you may not have ever seen or heard of but used to be all over in these parts).
Best bumper sticker "Don't tailgate me or I'll flick a booger on your windshield". I convinced my best friend to by it for her car in high school. Her mom hated me after that :)
ReplyDeleteI started running three years ago when I lived in texas so outside was year-round. Now I live in Iowa and am having a really hard time getting out in the cold. I guess I will have to learn to train on a treadmill. I can't stand the smell in gyms though. You just can't outrun a fart when your on a treadmill. Thanks for that quote BTW. I laugh every time.
Best Bumper Sticker: What Would Scooby Do?
ReplyDeleteYes I used the treadmill IF I have have too.. it sucks but oh well! I run alone 100% of the time so I do use music just to keep sane otherwise I'd be babbling to myself on the road.
ReplyDeleteI run on the treadmill...hate every minute of it but I do it. Usually listen to music but lately I have been taking my ipad and catching up on shows on netflix :)
ReplyDeleteI do everything I can to run outdoors and I do it without music. Although I ran the LV Mary with music b/c I wanted to not be bothered looking at the scenery and focus on pace, but back to no music.
ReplyDeleteI love those bumper stickers. Too Too Funny.
I love the bumper sticker as well!!
ReplyDeleteI try to run outside as much as HUMANLY possible...like only if there is no sidewalk/road showing or if it is dark. When it is not possible, I run at the gym. And I barely make it past three miles. IF I AM LUCKY. If my iPod died, I would probably forget the whole deal. ;)
When the weather sucks... yeah, I just skip. But I'm lazy. And I almost never run with music anymore. I have strange shaped ears or something and can't find any ear buds that fit me
ReplyDeleteUgg - I have done the same thing! Hate slipping on the treadmill.
ReplyDeleteThe weather got really bad out here in SoCal. It got down to 50 deg some nights. Brrr!!! I know! But for us, that's bone-chilling cold. I asked my hubby if I could find a treadmill for $100, would be let me get one. He said I could so I hit Craigs List and found one for $60.
ReplyDeleteIt's old but the display works and the motor is strong. HOWEVER, it is stuck on 6% and I can't make it go down! So my workouts are 3 miles at most and 4mph on my fastest sprints. It kicks my arse but it does the job. I can't wait for Spring to come back around.
My favorite bumper sticker: Jesus Loves You... Everyone else thinks you're an a$$hole".
I guess I shouldn't tell you I ran 15 miles on the beach this morning. It was in the 60's by the time I finished.
ReplyDeleteAwesome bumper sticker. I hate treadmills...I always admire pple who are willing to run on them. Up until this past week....coz I finally had to run on one myself.
ReplyDeleteI still hate it.
Anyways, I don't care how bad the weather is...I will still run it. So far. This is my first winter running, and I've even run -27 deg C windchill so far...so skipping a run is not an option.
I always WANT to run with my music, unless I have someone who is willing to run and chat with me the entire way.
