What’s Next?

I know I posted this pic on my Shut Up and Run Facebook Page, but had to post it here too because I am just that full of myself. The smile on my face shows how I felt throughout the race with the exception of when I thought my colon would explode. I’m in my bliss right here:

You guys crack me up. I barely had time to wipe the sweat off my brow and rinse my undies after the 70.3 race when you all asked, “What is next?” and “Are you going to do a full Ironman?”. Of course these are questions I’ve already asked myself! Do you all read minds for a living?

We age group athletes are an inspired and over-achieving bunch. It’s all about that next goal, the next race, the next PR. Don’t get me wrong: it doesn’t mean that we are out rightly killing ourselves all the time (don’t be a Dumb as Shit Athlete – DASA), but it does mean we always have – tucked back in the recesses of our brains – what our next attempt is going to be.

I’m going to avoid the “full Ironman” question for now, but I will fill you in on my next race. I have a half marathon on Saturday – the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half. I usually wouldn’t race back to back weekends, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

A couple of weeks ago, I became a member of Team Refuel, associated with Refuel with Chocolate Milk. I’ve long been drinking chocolate milk as a recovery drink (perfect when you need quick protein, but your stomach doesn’t want solid food), so when I met these guys at the Health and Fitness Bloggers Conference, it was a match made in heaven. They invited me to race this weekend as part of Team Refuel, along with Running Yogini.

This is from their website:

The cool thing about Team Refuel is they are looking for more team members. They are giving out grants to individuals ($250) and groups ($500) to help pay for race entry fees, etc. You will also receive training gear. Interested? Apply HERE and join the team!

Anyone else racing this weekend? This will be my third year doing this race. I am really not gunning for a PR, just out there to enjoy the amazing scenery (it starts in the mountains at about 9,000 feet) and to be with friends.

I like to run like I’m about punch someone in the face.

What’s your favorite recovery drink/food? Mine is obviously chocolate milk, but I always crave eggs. This is sometimes not pretty if you know what I mean.

SUAR

  3. Now that I have claimed number one status, let me say this: I knew you were racing this upcoming weekend b/c it was let out of the bag on Twitter and I'm excited for you. You are going to have a great race because of the success you had at Boulder 70.3.

So are you in recotaper right now? Sort of recovery and taper at the same time? Maybe you invented a new word for us endurance athletes.

And lastly, I am no longer referring to you as SUAR....because you are now SUAT.

  9. My husband just did the chocolate milk thing after his 22 this weekend. I had never tried it. I use this stuff Recoverite and mix it with milk. Georgetown to Idaho Springs...my first and second half marathon ever. Love it! And a great after party. Wish I was going to be there but I'll miss it by a week. :( boo.

  10. The article about you says you are a running coach...what exactly does that mean? Do you teach people new to running?Techniques? Increasing time? Just wondering. I have been walking/running for years and after this fx ankle heals I would like to really dive into running.. right now I am swimming and will be able to bike next week.
    BTW- great photo of you....

  13. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my chocolate milk for recovery.
I'm totally amazed at your drive...striving to be that ambitious or crazy, however you may see it.
    Good luck this weekend

  14. You're absolutely awe-inspiring! Can't believe how constant your joy and love for the sport and challenge is! A perfect formula of passion, dedication, and wisdom!

  15. That picture is amazing.

Chocolate milk is also my favorite quick go-to refueler. Unless it's REALLY hot outside and then I will kill someone for a smoothie. But after a long run I typically crave sweet carbs. Pancakes or french toast with sauteed banana is heaven.

  16. choco soy protein milk thing...Odwalla makes it. not a soy-nut, just can't do lactose.

have you considered doing ultras? i'm starting small, with a 50k...how much harder can 4 more miles be? want to do 50m next year.

  18. Photo's like that need to be posted twice! Great job on the 70.3.

It's gotta be chocolate milk and a banana. It's never failed me yet.

I'm so glad to hear other people sign up for half's just for the scenery too -not just to PR.

  19. Great Photo - your are inspiring!!

Yes, I do the chocolate milk - training runs over 17 miles get chocolate milk & a Whopper Jr.

I'm running the Chicago Rock N Roll Half Marathon this weekend. It HAS to be cooler than here in Louisiana. This morning at 5:30am it was 80+ degrees.

Take it easy on your recotaper.

  20. LOVE your picture. Wow!!You should have it made into a poster with something inspirational typed underneath it for your bloggers to buy! Id get one! I now have turned to choco. milk since reading about it being your fav. It is perfect because my belly was not very happy every time I crammed food into it right after a run.Plus we have it stocked 24/7 because its my son Maxs fav. drink....So I have you to thank for the tip. Also, r you still using the earphones you wore for the Boston? Wanted to know if you still love them? Im lookin for a new pair.

  21. I'm allergic to dairy (LAME!), so after a workout I tend to crave coconut water and fruit.

But after a RACE? Hamburger. Hands down. Nothing else will do.

  22. that is a fab photo. you look so joyful and in your element! Just so thrilled that HIM went so amazingly :) Wishing you a FUN race this weekend! I am not racing this weekend but am doing a timed mile before Sunday... who knows when I'll feel the inspiration ;-)
As for the recovery food... I am into eggs, too. I have offered to pay one of my Seattle-local Nuun teammates $15 for a safely-transported dozen hard-boiled eggs for that HTC Relay. No one has taken me up on that :/ lol

  23. GT to Idaho Springs? I'll be there! I was supposed to run it last year but I got crazy head to toe hives so I bailed. I'm gonna drop the hammer (very slowly compared to you) on it this weekend!

  24. Jason leaves the best comments.

Love that you are running a half this weekend already!

And MMMMMM chocolate milk. My FAVE!

  25. You are awesome! Congrats on shattering your goal! I can't do lactose, so I usually have coconut water after a long run. After reading these post I might try chocolate soy milk, very good idea! Or maybe chocolate almond milk.

  26. Oh please, who are you kidding? When should we expect the full IM announcement?

  27. I like bananas and chocolate soy milk.

  28. Chocolate milk does taste gooood after a long run. I just never have it around. If it comes in the house, the kids drink it up within 4 hours.

  29. I wanna see a chocolate milk mustache from you! Holler!

Love the first pic, THAT embodies race day for you! Mine would be of me bent over puking, so I like yours much better!

  30. I never thought to have chocolate milk as a recovery drink.... though I would probably have to go with plain milk since my stomach doesn't handle chocolate very well :(
Normally I go for peanut butter after a race. A nice spoonful of pb with a banana and I'm in heaven!

  33. I'm all about the chocolate milk after a workout, but occasionally have cereal and milk or yogurt and fruit instead.

    Great pic!
