When You Fall, Get Up.

My taste in music is vast. Yes, vast. Not varied or big or luscious. Vast. Doesn’t that make me sound like an intellectual? Well, I’m not, and never will be, but I use words like “vast” and “insurmountable” to fake it.

AC/DC to Florida to the Ramones to Matt and Kim. Anything with a beat that I can run to.

Lately I’ve been loving this song (video below). It smacks of strength, moving forward, hope, inspiration. All things I need to hold onto right now. And always.

You're a good soldier
Choosing your battles
Pick yourself up
And dust yourself off
And back in the saddle
But you've got it all
Believe it
When you fall get up
Oh oh...
And if you fall get up
Oh oh...

It’s one of the themes from this summer’s World Cup. I think you’ll like it too.

Please, my friends. I need your help.

Not to belabor the point, but water running is killing me. Not physically, but mentally. Getting in that pool everyday and pretend running for upwards of 45 minutes sucks the big one. Yes, that one.

Please. Give me your most  favorite song on your iPod. Your best running song.

Every last one of you. I need new ideas. More than ever.

Or, if you have a favorite podcast, give that to me too.

I’ve got to get through this transition time and period of recovery. Hopefully only 38 more days until running and I begin our love affair once again.Only this time I’m not putting out so early.

Trying to stay up,

SUAR

I used to actually run races listening to audio books back before I had children and when I could actually concentrate on something for more than two minutes...

  23. Gonna go a little off the beaten path here, since you've already got the Eminem suggestions, and other pump-you-up tunes covered. I've had 'Pavement Cracks (Mac Quayle Extended Mix)' by Annie Lennox on several models of MP3 players over the years, and it is a go-to running song for me. Make sure it's that specific mix, as there are several versions of the song, some of which are way too slow for a runner's mix.

Also, in terms of entertaining Podcasts that make the time pass quickly, I regularly listen to the 'Sklarbro Country' podcast by the Sklar brothers. I've had to stop running on occasion from laughing so hard. May not be for everyone, but it cracks me up. Based on your writing, I think you'll get a kick out of these guys.

How about downloading the guys from England on Marathon Talk, it's on itunes. I listen to it for the first part of my long run. It runs about an hour or so and has lots of great race reporting, lots of great speakers and visitors and I like following the training of one of they guy's wives. She's super fast. I love these talks and they do them weekly and can be down loaded for free.

    Good luck, zone out!

Just Dance - Lady Gaga (Yes, I know, she's weird but I substitute Just Run in my head and it works)
    SexyBack - Justin Timberlake
    Forever - Fireflight
And ANYTHING Black Eyed Peas - I <3 them.

Favorites to Cool-Down/Stretch: Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
    Come Together - Beatles
Winter Song - Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson

Run on - even if it is in water, at least you can run. I'm on no-run right now, thanks to my IT Band. Stupid bike - I hate the bike.

  61. If you want to send me your email, I can send you my "zippy playlist." :)

Also, Ricki-Lee, Can't Touch It. Britt Nicole, Welcome to the Show.

And, lots of good karmic thoughts to you. I spent a lot of time this summer pool running, cycling, and being mad about not running. I've been back for three weeks and am only just realizing the mental toll it took on me to be out so long. It's tough - hang in there - lots of internet support to you - and you'll be back soon. xo.

  62. "Run Baby Run" - Garbage (my running playlist is, in fact, named after this song)

"Empire State of Mind" - Jay-Z, but I'm a sucker for Glee versions of... pretty much everything.

    "Just Dance" - Lady Gaga

"Teenage Dream" - technically Katy Perry, but I really don't like her version. The Glee version is much better, IMHO.

Aaand because I grew up in the 90s, "I Turn to You" - Melanie C. I love me my bad pop music.

10 Reasons Pool Running Doesn't Suck

    1) It gives the barefoot movement a whole new angle- and spares the wear and tear on your running kicks

    2) You earn sympathetic looks from the cute boy-toy lifeguards.

    3) Until now you thought breaststroke was the slowest way you could travel from one end of the pool ot the other.

    4) Hello six-pack! Water running recruits those pesky core muscles. Even your arms will exhibit extra buffness with the water resistance.

    5) If ever you longed for a surrogate granny, there are plenty in the therapeutic lap lane.

    6) from your vertical vantage point you can observer and admire and critique the swim strokes of the nearby lap swimmers. Maybe you'll learn something.

    7) There are not rocks, stumps, curbs or other obstacles inthe pool. You are not longer a danger to yourself. You can even run with your eyes close (Note resist the urge to fall asleep.)

    8) One rarely encounters rattlesnakes while pool running.

    9) If you hop in immediately following a bike session you get to call it a P-run

    10) If you can mentally endure two hours of water running, your next Ironman marathon will feel short.

    Enjoy!

  67. I have several songs that I used when I started running back in January and was doing the C25K and trying to build up to running 30mins non-stop lol. 78. I see that it's been mentioned a couple times, but I love, love This American Life. I find music can't even distract me for the more monotonous, mind-numbing runs (ie: treadmill). But each episode of TAL is 1 hour, perfect for a mid-distance easy run.

I usually cherry pick the episode though - I find the more politically charged episodes a bit dreary (perhaps because I live in Canada).

The Moth (short stories) and Wire Tap are somewhat similar.
